Lenovo Offers Wireless Broadband on its ThinkPad Laptops

Lenovo is offering a new no-contract wireless Broadband service called Lenovo Mobile Access on their ThinkPad laptops. This supplements the 3G connectivity enabled on the device, which may be useless when users are outside of their carrier’s coverage area or abroad.

Lenovo Mobile Access is a cloud-based service that allows users to be pre-activated and constantly-connected to the Internet directly via Lenovo. It eliminates the need for using public Wi-Fi signals or using 3G dongles.

This service has been made possible through a partnership with Macheen, a startup cloud-based broadband company based in Austin, Texas. Currently, the service offers coverage in only selected countries, including the U.S., the U.K., Italy, France, Ireland, Denmark, the Netherlands, Germany, and Belgium.

Instead of a one-size-fits-all mode of service, Lenovo Mobile Access offers a wide range of payment options that cater to both regular and infrequent users. For instance, a plan that costs $1.95 gets the casual user just 30 minutes of mobile broadband access, perhaps to simply check email or social networking websites. A full-day plan for 200 MB is also available for $8.95. Heavier users, meanwhile, can opt to sign up for plans that give from 2 GB to 6 GB of data. These users can also have the option of asking for a monthly billing. Unfortunately, Lenovo has not announced the exact cost of a 2 GB to 6 GB data plan.

Currently, Lenovo is making the service available on particular laptops from the ThinkPad line, which have a mobile broadband modem integrated into them, such as the ThinkPad Classic, ThinkPad X, and the ThinkPad Edge. Inside the notebook, a SIM card may also be found, which may be used for connecting to the service even when users are abroad.

Lenovo envisions the service to be useful especially since constant Internet connectivity today is necessary, not only for regular communication with other people, but also for the maintenance of businesses.

Lenovo users may create an account on the Lenovo website to activate the service.
