Sony QX10 And QX100 Cameras Receive Big 2.0 Firmware Update

The Sony QX10 and QX100 cameras are still odd, but now they just got a lot more powerful. Today, a massive 2.0 firmware update was released for the pair, with features like video recording and low-light areas getting improvements.

Both cameras now have full 1080P 16:9 video recording, up from the previous 1080P 4:3 recordings. That should help with watching videos you shoot on most phones, 16:9 monitors, and HDTVs.

Both cameras also have had their ISO top limits increased, which should help with low-light scenarios. The QX10 now has a top ISO rate of 3200, and the QX100 now can shoot up to an ISO rate of 12800. Also for the QX100 is a new shutter speed priority mode, designed for mostly action shots.

To update your QX10 or QX100, you’ll have to connect your model to a computer via a Windows PC (sorry Mac users), a USB cable, and a battery charge of three quarters (75%). The link for instructions and the download for both models is here. So if you own either camera, go update them.

The Sony QX10 lenses boasts of being the first zoom lens and sensor that attaches to a smartphone. When clipped on, these lenses allow for 10x optical zoom. Sony claims that the products are able to perform well even in low light with the help of its back-illuminated 18MP 1/2.3” Exmor R CMOS sensor. Also, they have the ability to record high quality 1920 x 1080/30p HD videos. The lenses can also be detached from the smartphone and mounted on a tripod to give the user more freedom in shooting. The lenses connect to the handset through one-touch linking via NFC or Wi-Fi. Although made by Sony, the accessory is compatible with most Android and iOS smartphones. Sony recommends using the lenses with the free PlayMemories mobile app, which gives easy access to the device’s features. The app also lets users edit and share photos.

The Sony QX10 camera lens in black is available for pre-order, and will be shipped on October 15th. The device will be sold and shipped by Focus Camera. Meanwhile, the same lens in white is currently available on hand, with only six units left in stock. This lens is being sold by 17th Street Photo. The devices have dimensions of 4.5 x 4.5 x 4 inches and weigh 9.6 ounces. Currently, these can only be shipped within the United States.

Meanwhile, the more premium Sony QX100 camera lens is also available for $498.00, or $1.99 less the original list price. Like the QX10, this is available in both black and white. Currently, the black is selling on a pre-order basis, whereas the white is on hand, with 4 units left in stock.
The QX100 comes with the same sensor found on the Cyber-shot RX100 II camera, which is a 1.0 inch, 20.2 MP Exmor RCMOS sensor. The sensor works with a wide-aperture Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T lens with 3.6x optical zoom and a BIONZ image processor. It allows for the selection of various shooting modes, based on a number of lighting conditions. It then automatically adjusts the camera settings based on these modes.
