Problem #1: How to restore data from corrupted SD card used on Samsung Galaxy S5
Hi. A magnetic button on my wallet (I assume) broke the camera lens of my Galaxy S5 with Lollipop, while in my pocket. At the same time my SD card in the phone became inaccessible, so probably some connection error etc corrupted the card. The phone was repaired in official repair shop, but the card remains inaccessible to the phone. Other cards work without problems, but not the one that has photos of four months, not backed up anywhere. (Yes, I know, I’m an idiot).
Phone tries to enable the card after inserting it, but in second or two states “Card is ready to be removed” without the card removal action started. Those words are my translation from Finnish user interface, so not necessary exactly the same in English user interface.
When inserted with USB-adapter in my laptop, on USB 2.0 connector the card is not recognized at all, when inserted into USB 3 connector an inaccessible drive letter will exist.
For things not to be too easy, the card is encrypted due to corporate policy with phone’s own encryption.
So is there any way to restore the data from that corrupted MicroSD? Br. — Janne
Solution: Hi Janne. The answer to your question depends on the current state of the SD card itself. Based on your problem description though, it appears that your computer is still detecting the storage device although it seemed unable to read it or access its contents, probably because of the encryption in it.
Technically, it is possible to hack into an Android encrypted SD card as long it’s not physically damaged and a computer can still recognize it. That implies using powerful third party file recovery techniques that are hard to come by nowadays. This also means using a powerful computer to break the encryption in the first place, assuming you have the software to do it. Because of the huge processing power it takes to do the job, there are simply no Android apps that you can use to decrypt the card on a mobile.

We have not tested these products ourselves so we cannot say with certainty if they will work towards resolution. These suggestions are provided to give you a point from where to start only. Let us know if you encounter any problems with them so we can update this post accordingly.
Problem #2: Why does some apps are getting stored in Samsung Galaxy S5 internal memory instead of in the SD card
First, thank you for your service to the community. I love reading about troubleshooting problems and discovering new apps.
My reason for emailing is this…I try to keep all of my apps saved on my SD card when possible. I could be wrong, but it feels like the phone runs better (in theory) if it doesn’t have as many apps using the internal storage. The problem is that every time an app that is saved on my SD card is updated, it gets saved in the internal storage again. Sometimes the app will even be removed from my organizational folder system and placed in a random spot on my “apps” window or even worse on my home screen. Where the newly updated app gets placed seems to be totally random. I have to (my OCD talking) regularly go to Settings>Application manager>SD card, and physically move any apps that have been recently updated BACK over to the SD card. Do you know of any way I can fix that so that when apps get updated, they go back to the location they were prior to the update?
On a side note, I’ve also been one of the thousands of people who have had to get used to the “Apparently contacts has stopped” message. I’ve tried everything that has been suggested so far on the site to no avail. It’s far less intrusive than the other problems, so I have just learned to ignore it.

Solution: Hi Baron. Some apps are designed to be stored in the phone’s internal memory only for security and stability reasons. Email apps for example are usually locked to the phone’s memory instead of being installed in a secondary storage device to make it harder for snooping third party apps to compromise your contacts and messages. Other developers would also prefer to use internal memory for their apps to prevent problems and faster loading time. Unless you root your phone at this time, there’s really nothing much that you can do about this.
Regarding the “Apparently contacts has stopped” message, the best way to resolve it is to delete the contact app’s data. Please see previously posted article on this particular issue here.
Problem #3: Samsung Galaxy S5 showing “storage space running out” error
Hi there. So I just upgraded to Lollipop the other day and now I am getting the “storage space running out” notification that is starting to impact the performance of the phone (emails not downloading, some apps not working, etc.). This was not an issue prior to the update and I am starting to get frustrated with it. Outside of this I am not having any of the other known issues with Lollipop and in doing some research online can’t seem to find a fix. I store all of my pictures and videos on the SD card and don’t have any music on the device so I am not sure why the few apps I have would take up the entire 16GB of disk space. Please let me know if you can recommend any fixes for me.

Solution: Hi Adam. If you are experiencing slow performance problems, make sure that the phone’s internal storage is not near capacity.
If there’s enough empty space (about 500 MB), make sure to clear the phone’s cache partition.

- What error message are you getting when transferring music files to the SD card?
- Do you have more than enough space to the destination storage device?
Problem #5: Samsung Galaxy S5 not detecting the SD card
Hello. I have got a problem with my Samsung Galaxy S5. I have got an SD card in it but nothing happens. It doesn’t show that there is a SD card in my Samsung. Can you can help me out? — Bodhy
Solution: Hi Bodhy. Does the phone detects other SD cards? Does the SD card itself work when inserted to another smartphone, tablet or computer? Any answer to these questions should give you a good point where to start the troubleshooting. If this is the first time that you have inserted this SD card in your S5, try to format it in your computer first then re-insert if again to the S5. if that won’t work, that SD card may not be working properly.
Problem #6: Samsung Galaxy S5 showing “SD card is blank or has unsupported files” error
Hi. My Samsung S5 says “SD card is blank or has unsupported files”, after I installed a 128GB SD card. — Said
Solution: Hi Said. Make sure that the SD card is formatted using your S5 first before attempting to use it. If this SD card has worked before in this phone though, it may have become corrupted for some reason so your best bet is to try to insert it to another device to see if still works.

Hi Manu. It’s really unfortunate that Lollipop’s reputation has not improved much even after several months of its initial release. And sadly, end users like us cannot do much about it. We create this blog to help users become aware of troubleshooting steps that they can do on their end. If what you mean by “reasonable advice” is to change Lollipop’s codes or change how it works, that’s unfortunately out of our scope of support. Those things are best resolved by Google, developers and hardware maker’s technical team. We appreciate your view though.
