How to fix Galaxy S9 that restarts when connecting to wifi or mobile data

Here comes another #GalaxyS9 troubleshooting post that deals with other forms of wifi issues on this device. We’ve been receiving a lot of wifi-related issues for this device since the past few days so hopefully, this and the previous post will help fix some of them.

Problem #1: Galaxy S9 keeps disconnecting from home wifi or one particular wifi network

My S9 keeps disconnecting from my home WiFi only. It will either fully disconnect and I’ll need to reconnect to the network or it will find and connect to the WiFi but say “Internet Not Available” or “Network Error”. I can connect to WiFi in other places (office, coffee shop, etc.) and I can connect to my home WiFi with my iPad, laptop and other phones (iPhone and Androids) with no issues. It seems to only be an issue with my phone and my network. Any ideas?  

I’ve tried all the usuals: router reset, phone reset, forgetting network, resetting network settings but nothing has helped so far. — Aaa

Solution: Hi Aaa. If your Galaxy S9 is having an issue with your home wifi only, that can mean that the issue may have something to do with your router or how it’s configured. We don’t know what you mean exactly by router reset but if you only restarted (turn it off and on), that may not be enough. We suggest that you check the network configuration and see if you might have changed some things that leads to this problem. You may have set some restrictions on the router that now affects how it treats your S9. For example, you may have allowed your S9 to connect to the router but not to the internet. This can be achieved by limiting the allowed bandwidth for your S9. Every router has its own configuration method so try to talk to the router maker or to your Internet Service Provider (if they did provide your router). If you have someone else managing your router settings for you, talk to that person and have him or her look at the issue for you.

Alternatively, you can factory reset your router and see what happens. Doing a factory reset on any ISP-provided networking equipment may disrupt your internet services so be sure to consult them first if you plan in doing it.

Problem #2: Galaxy S9 restarts when connecting to wifi or mobile data

Phone restarts when connecting to the internet. I can turn the phone to the airplane setting and it will work fine. I tried disabling all apps and turning off airplane mode and it instantly restarts. It will restart every time the phone reboots and tries connecting by either 4G or Wi-Fi. It works for a few days after a factory reset, but, eventually returns to restarting after booting completely and the home page is open. The reboot usually happens 10 to 20 seconds after showing the home screen, allowing limited time to activate airplane mode, which is the only way I’ve found that prevents the reboot. — Brian

Solution: Hi Brian. This is a possible bad app issue so what you try to try first is to see what happens when you connect to wifi while on Safe Mode. In this state, no third party apps or services will run. If wifi works normally and your phone won’t restart, that’s the confirmation that you’re looking for. You can then try to identify which app is causing the problem.

To run your S9 to diagnostic mode or safe mode:

  1. Turn the device off.
  2. Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen appearing on the screen.
  3. When SAMSUNG appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  4. Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  5. Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  6. When Safe mode appears in the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume down key.
  7. Let your phone run, pull up camera app, and check for the problem.

If everything works normally when on safe mode, you can bet one of your apps is to blame. To identify which of your apps is causing the trouble, you should boot the phone back to safe mode and follow these steps:

  1. Boot to safe mode.
  2. Check for the problem.
  3. Once you’ve confirmed that a third party app is to blame, you can start uninstalling apps individually. We suggest that you begin with the most recent ones you added.
  4. After you uninstall an app, restart the phone to normal mode and check for the problem.
  5. If your S9 is still problematic, repeat steps 1-4.

Contact Samsung support

We’re not aware of this issue happening on other Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus devices so it may be an isolated case. If the problem returns when it’s on safe mode, or right after a factory reset (when there are no apps installed), there may be a problem with your phone’s wifi radio or motherboard. Unfortunately, there’s no way to know this for sure so you’ll have to let Samsung take a look at the hardware.
