How to hard reset on Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge

Hard reset is a factory reset via Recovery Mode. On Samsung devices, there are at least 2 ways to wipe a device. One if via Settings Menu and the other via Recovery Mode. This video will walk you through the easy steps to factory reset by using hardware buttons and via Recovery.

Disable FRP before you reset

With the introduction of Android – 5.0 Lollipop, Samsung devices enjoyed stronger security features. Android – 5.0 Lollipop brought with it Factory Reset Protection or FRP that locks a device if a user fails to provide Google account credentials following a factory reset. This makes it harder for thieves to simply wipe a stolen device and use it. If FRP was enabled before the device was stolen, the screen would be locked for good unless the correct Google account is added to it.

So, even if you are the legitimate owner of your Galaxy S7 or S7 edge, you want to make sure that you won’t be locked out of your own device after wiping it. To do that, you must turn off FRP ahead of time. You also need to do this if you’re planning on giving or selling the device away.

To disable FRP on your Galaxy S7 or S7 edge:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap Lock screen and security and remove all passwords, patterns, or PINs you are using to secure your phone.
  3. Once you’ve removed your screen lock, go back the main menu of Settings.
  4. Then, go to Cloud and accounts.
  5. Tap Accounts.
  6. Select your Google account or accounts. Make sure to remove all Google accounts from the device.
  7. Then, tap on More settings icon at the upper right of the account (three dots).
  8. Tap Remove account button.

How to hard reset on Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge
Now that FRP has been disabled, you can proceed with hard reset. Follow these steps to boot the device to Recovery Mode and factory reset from there.

  1. Create a backup of your data.
  2. Turn off the device. This is important. If you can’t turn it off, you’ll never be able to boot to Recovery Mode. If you are not able to shut the device off regularly via the Power button, wait until the phone’s battery is drained. Then, charge the phone for 30 minutes before booting to Recovery Mode.
  3. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  4. When the green Android logo shows up, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  8. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  9. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  10. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Fix Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge that won’t charge using its charger, other power issues

Charging issues is one of the most common power-related problems with the #Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge (#S7Edge). We actually received a lot of complaints from our readers who were complaining about their phones that won’t charge using the wired method. In fact, we already addressed many of these problems before but since we are still receiving quite a lot of similar issues, we cannot just stop publishing posts like this.

In this post, I included a few charging issues. The first problem is about a unit that doesn’t charge while plugged in using its power adapter but charges with 1A power bank. It might be an issue with the hardware or the firmware and there’s only one way to find out–troubleshooting. So, read on to understand more about this problem and learn how to deal with it in case it occurs to your.

Galaxy S7 Edge doesn’t charge using power adapters or chargers

Problem: We have had the phone for about 2 months and we had been travelling on a coach and it had charged fine but when I have come home it has not charged I have tried about 5 different plugs and chargers and it won’t charge it only charges when I use a 1 amp portable power bank and this has happiest to me and my sister. We both have S7 edge me black her gold and it has happened on both. I think it is a software thing. We have updated a few weeks ago and we have tried to restart the phone many times. Please help.

Answer: Well, it can be an issue with the firmware or a problem with the chargers or the cable you use. We cannot just jump into conclusion without doing some troubleshooting. Two Galaxy S7 Edge phones having the same issue and do you think it’s also a coincident that it happens to you and your sister? I don’t think so. Probably, you have the same set of apps installed, right?

My first suspect are the apps. You may have installed an app that can manipulate the battery. With that in mind, I want you to boot your device in safe mode to temporarily disable all third-party apps.

  1. Press and hold the Power key.
  2. As soon as you can see the ‘Samsung Galaxy S7 EDGE’ on the screen, release the Power key and immediately hold the Volume Down key.
  3. Continue holding the Volume Down button until the device finishes rebooting.
  4. You may release it when you can see ‘Safe mode’ in the bottom left corner of the screen.

Once the phone successfully booted up in safe mode, attempt to charge phone using the original charger. I understand you already tried using 5 different chargers, is that accurate? If so, then please just use the original one after all, those third-party chargers don’t work too. Should my suspicion that the problem is caused by one of the apps, then it should charge while in diagnostic state but if not, then try connecting your device to a computer if possible.

By connecting it to a computer, you can immediately tell if the USB cable has something to do with the problem. If the computer detects the phone, it must charge although very slowly but if not, then it’s the cable. Try using the USB cable of the other unit and see if that works.

Lastly, if the phone still won’t charge if not through the power bank, then take time to backup your data and files and reset the device. If you were right about your suspicion that it’s a software issue, then the reset may fix it but if not, then you have no other choice but to have it checked. Here’s how you effectively reset your device…

  1. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key. NOTE: It doesn’t matter how long you press and hold the Home and Volume Up keys, it won’t affect the phone but by the time you press and hold the Power key, that’s when the phone starts to respond.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  4. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds. NOTE: The “Installing system update” message may show on the screen for several seconds before displaying the Android system recovery menu. This is just the first phase of the entire process.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  6. Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
  7. Now highlight the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
  8. Wait until your phone is finished doing the Master Reset. Once completed, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and press the Power key.
  9. The phone will now reboot longer than usual.

Galaxy S7 Edge won’t reboot, screen only flickers

Problem: I have tried the four steps to reboot my Samsung S7 Edge but the screen only light up for a fraction of a second and off again. I brought this phone in Vienna, Austria, because I lost my s6 phone in the taxi while travelling to work in Vienna. As I am permanently in another country, I would like to request whether I can still be helped to fix my phone?

Answer: I don’t know how this problem started since you only told us what’s happening with your phone now or what the problem is. If it’s damaged physically or by water, then wherever you go, you cannot claim warranty. However, if it’s a minor problem not caused by you, you may still be able to have it checked by a technician without a service fee. Company rules vary from country to country so you won’t know unless you try.

Galaxy S7 Edge draining the battery while plugged in instead of charging

Problem: I tend to put my phone to charge and I would text people while charging and I recently sawas it would not charge it would actually drain more than charger. I have this problem while the phone is being charge and I have the fast charging cable. Can you please help.

Answer: Try turning the phone off and plug it in to charge and if it charges fine and fast, then the problem might be as simple as too much apps running in the background draining the battery quicker than the device could charge. The next thing to do is verify whether the phone also charge fine while in safe mode and if it does, then try to find out which apps are causing the problem.

On the other hand, if the device won’t charge properly even if it’s turned off or in safe mode, then it might be a problem with its charger. At this point in time, try using a different charger or try connecting your device to a computer. Should the device charge when using a different charger or connected to a computer, then it’s time to buy a new charger, otherwise, let it be checked by a technician.

Galaxy S7 Edge won’t turn on nor respond without apparent reason

Problem: I was headed home with my Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge working perfectly fine. So I put my phone at a pocket in the car. And when i got home it suddenly was not responding. I tried charging it but the led indicator wasn’t lighting up but I still kept it plugged for like maybe 20 mins but still wont turn on. I also tried doing the reset with the volume key down and power button thing and it still wont respond. Should i get my phone repaired or something?

Answer: Don’t worry, it’s not as bad as you think. It’s a simple system crash, which leaves the phone unresponsive and charging is also impossible to do. You can bring your phone back to life by pressing and holding the Volume Down button and Power key together for 15 seconds. If the problem happens more often, the phone might be suffering from a serious firmware issue and a reset might be necessary. My point is, since it already happened once, there’s a chance it would happen again so continue observing your phone.

Galaxy S7 Edge keeps showing the “moisture detected” warning

Problem: Ever since using the VR I have charging issues with intermittent “moisture detected” warnings.  Phone has not gotten wet and USB port is dry. At times while phone is charging after the charging will stop/continue randomly with intermittent warnings. Sometimes it will charge without issues for a good 30 min prior to any signs. Sometimes longer. I’ve read other reports with similar or identical issues.

Answer: Try to check the USB port on your phone to see if there is a pin that’s bent or a lint inside. If there’s a bent pin, try to straighten it out as that might be the problem and as for the lint or debris, just remove it or blast compressed air into the port to clean it up. However, if there’s no problem in the port, it’s time you had it checked.

Galaxy S7 Edge won’t turn on after possible overheating

Problem: Was using Dr Fone to recover deleted photos from my S7 Edge. Software froze which is when I realised my phone seemed to be switched off, but extremely hot, above 104f (baby thermometer).  Error message was to the effect that my phone malfunctioned. So I disconnected connection from my PC. I used the volume  and start button, this eventually seemed to switch the phone off, as it started to cool down. However I cannot switch my phone on.  Can you help?
Answer: In other words, the phone overheated. Pressing and holding the Volume and Home buttons won’t turn off the device so I think the phone switched off on its own as preventive measure because if it stayed on, it might have been fried.

Allow the phone to cool off and then press and hold the Volume Down button and then the Power key and keep them pressed together for 15 seconds. That should boot the phone up but if not, try to charge the phone for a few minutes and try to see if it does heat up fast because if so, there’s nothing you can do about it except bring it to a technician and have it checked or repaired. If it charges, however, and the charging signs are showing, then you can turn the phone on after a few minutes.

Galaxy S7 Edge froze but home screen is on with blue line

Problem: My Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge has frozen up, the home screen is on but there’s a blue line that’s scrolling up and down it won’t let me enter to my apps. It does not respond at all.

Answer: That’s another variation of a system crash–the phone becomes unresponsive but the screen stays on. To fix it, press and hold the Volume Down and Power keys together for 15 seconds. This will make the phone reboot normally.

Galaxy S7 Edge won’t charge up to 100%, stops at 70%

Problem: Hi. My phone all of a sudden doesn’t charge up to 100%, it stops at 70%, little icon on a battery shows lightning bolt on it while charger is plugged in but it doesn’t charge anymore. Tried to reboot but nothing changed. And i think battery life started to go down much quicker than usual. Any ideas?

Answer: Try to boot your device in safe mode and see if it can continue up to 100% when all third-party apps are disabled. If still not, try turning it off but continue charging it. If the problem remains, try to wipe the cache partition as corrupt caches may sometimes cause problems like this.

  1. Turn off the phone.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  4. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  6. Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
  7. Now highlight the option ‘Yes’ using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
  8. Wait until your phone is finished wiping the cache partition. Once completed, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and press the Power key.
  9. The phone will now reboot longer than usual.

If all else fails, have it checked by a technician.

Is Galaxy S7 Edge waterproof? No, it’s not.

Problem: Phone not waterproof.  In 3ft of h2o, holding breath took pic and came back up no longer than 10sec. Phone will not come on contact Samsung and told since I didn’t purchase directly from them they are not responsible. How can you advertise one thing and not stand behind it.

But anyway, we also would like to tell you that the phone is water-resistant, not waterproof. No one can blame you for thinking it’s waterproof as the IP68 rating is one of the selling points of the phone. But the fact is water can still get into the device and that’s what happened to yours, right? Too bad Samsung won’t take it in and fix it without fee but it’s because water damage isn’t covered by the device’s warranty.

Galaxy S7 Edge keeps on rebooting

Problem: First, I’d like to say that my Galaxy S7 Edge is absolutely a great device. But just this week, it started to reboot randomly even if I’m not touching it or even the screen is locked. In fact, I asked some of my friends who also have had the same phone but unfortunately even them didn’t have any idea what’s happening on my device. And now the problem is getting worse, the phone restarts more often compared the other day. I tried the device to power it off and after a few minutes power on it again but still no avail. Solution: Well, this issue you have is common not just in Galaxy S7 Edge device but to all Samsung Galaxy models. In fact, there are several reasons why the device reboots itself without any prompts or warning. As I dug deeper on the issue, I found that one of the key reasons is due to a defective battery in which, it cannot anymore provide the required performance and power and that’s the reason the device will reboot itself. You may follow the procedures below to see if one of them can shed light into the issue or even fix the problem…

Step 1: Boot the device in Safe Mode

Through Safe Mode you can determine if some of your newly installed third-party apps are causing the issue. However, after booting the device on that mode and it won’t crash or reboot then, there are third-party apps that triggers the issue. So, the best thing you need to do is to find and uninstall those apps you suspected that triggers the problem and observe if the issue will persist.  

Here are the steps how to reboot the device in Safe Mode:

  1. Press and hold the Power key.
  2. If Samsung Galaxy logo appears, release the Power key and simply hold the Volume Down key.
  3. Continue holding the Volume Down key until the device finishes rebooting.
  4. If you can see “Safe Mode” in the bottom left corner of the screen then, you may release the Volume Down key.

Step 2: Factory Reset the device

The factory reset is necessary when the problem still occurs in safe mode. It will bring the phone back to its default settings and clean up the installation. More often than not, reboot problems can easily be fixed by the reset but the thing is that you will have to go through all the hassles of backing up your data, which is necessary if you don’t want to lose important files.

So, make sure you backed up everything in your phone and just reset the device through the Settings menu.

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Find and tap Settings and then touch Backup and reset.
  3. Tap Factory data reset and touch Reset device.
  4. If you have screen lock feature turned on, enter your password or PIN.
  5. Touch Continue.
  6. Tap Delete all to confirm your action.

After the reset, set your phone up again.

Galaxy S7 Edge overheated, not booting up

Problem: My S7 Edge overheated while charging and not booting after that. I have tried booting the phone by different methods mention in your post. Can you help me on how to boot my S7 Edge?

Answer: You cannot take the word “overheated” very lightly because if what you said is true, then your phone is messed up pretty badly. I think the problem is not just about the phone not booting up, I think it really won’t turn on at all. I think it’s fried already! Galaxy S7 Edge has a black screen, won’t boot up

Problem: My phone is not turning on it was on earlier with pink and green lines and now it is black and whenever I press the power button or the home button it showed that the back button and page button are lighting up I tried all the tricks holding the power button and every other button and after doing that whenever I pressed the home button and the power it flashes green.

If the device suffered physical and/or liquid damage, then don’t waste any more time instead bring the phone to the shop and have a technician check it for you. Galaxy S7 Edge charger and adaptor gets extremely hot

Problem: Hey I’m Kaelyn I have a Galaxy S7 Edge and my USB and adaptor gets extremely hot and I have to switch out chargers every so often but then go back to using the other. I have to switch between three different chargers.

Answer: Stick to one charger first. Plug it in and connect your phone. Leave the phone charging and see if it still heats up even with the phone’s screen is turned off while charging. If so, try turning off the device and see if the same thing happens. Do the same to other chargers. The purpose of this procedure is to find out if it’s the phone that’s causing the power adapter to heat up because it is normal for the charger produce the same amount of current regardless whether the phone is in use while charging or not.

If the phone is being used while charging, the generation of heat will be greater than when the phone is turned off. However, if it’s the phone that’s heating up while charging, there might be a more serious hardware issue. For this, you need a technician. The same thing goes if all your chargers heat up even if the phone is turned off while charging. It’s best to stick with the original charger just to be safe.

If the problem persists, I suggest you immediately bring the phone to a shop to have it checked because it’s risky having to try different chargers and we don’t know exactly if those chargers meet the standards. Remember that the S7 Edge supports quick charging and there are now third-party chargers that are also capable of producing high current and voltage to meet the demands of phone with such feature. Galaxy S7 Edge fast charging not working anymore

Problem: My fast charging is not working anymore I tried other cables and fast chargers. Another problem is that when i plug the usb in the laptop it doesn’t let me copy any data from it . It shows only that charging. Fast charging is activated in the system.

Answer: There are pre-requisites that need to be met before your Galaxy S7 Edge can fast charge so check on that. But you know what, the easiest way to make the device fast charge is by turning it off. If the phone doesn’t fast charge, then there’s a problem and whatever it might be, it’s recommended you troubleshoot your phone with a clean firmware installation.   1. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.

  4. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds. NOTE: The “Installing system update” message may show on the screen for several seconds before displaying the Android system recovery menu. This is just the first phase of the entire process.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  6. Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
  7. Now highlight the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
  8. Wait until your phone is finished doing the Master Reset. Once completed, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and press the Power key.
  9. The phone will now reboot longer than usual.

Galaxy S7 Edge screen black, phone unresponsive

Problem: Black screen, no response to power or home buttons.  No reset response.  Phone continues to receive calls and text (according to audio).  Occasional flash of white bar on screen.

Answer: Screen freeze sometimes happens; it’s when the service that handles the display crashes leaving the phone alive without display. Such problem can easily be fixed by a forced reboot procedure but then again, we really don’t know if the problem is caused by physical or water damage. Nevertheless, it’s imperative you try rebooting the phone using this procedure:

  1. Press and hold the Volume Down button and then press and hold the Power key.
  2. Keep both keys pressed together for 10 to 15 seconds.
  3. The device will reboot after that.

Galaxy S7 Edge stays at 89% when charged, reboots by itself

Problem: Hi! I have a Galaxy S7 Edge. I left it charging overnight. When I woke up, it was showing 89% instead of 100% and when I disconnected the charger, it turned off. Then I noticed that it only turns on while charging, but the battery stays at 89%, and even during charging, it restarts by itself. I wiped the cache and did a master reset, but nothing seems to work, it doesn’t turn on. Do you have any suggestion?

A: It might be just some issues with your apps, so the first thing you should is troubleshoot one app that you’re having problem with. For instance, since you are having issues with Facebook, let’s troubleshoot that first and then we go to other apps. The first troubleshooting procedure you should do is clear the cache and data of the app. It’s safe to do it with Facebook because you won’t lose anything but your setting preferences…

Clearing App Cache & Data

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Find and tap on Settings.
  3. Touch Applications and then Application manager.
  4. Swipe to ALL tab.
  5. Find and touch Facebook.
  6. Touch the Force Close button first.
  7. Then, tap Storage.
  8. Tap Clear cache and then Clear data, Delete.

How to fix this issue?

A: If this problem occurs with both Wi-Fi and mobile data enabled, try going to the Advanced Wi-Fi settings and turn on ‘Smart Network Switch’ so your phone will be connected to mobile data and won’t automatically switch between networks. If the problem still persists, try wiping the cache partition (follow steps above) or you may call your provider and inquire whether there’s an issue with the network or not.

Q: “I believe edge has prioritizing problem with Play Store. I have a newer C6300 Netgear dual band modem/router. S7 Edge can’t handshake with Play Store unless you either use the guest band on router or you put phone in airplane mode then turn WiFi back on.  S7 Edge works find with app in data mode.

A: I believe the problem isn’t the “prioritization” because there’s no such thing. I think the problem is with the settings of your new router. Try switching to a band that has less interference and see if that helps or you may call your Internet Service Provider and check your router.

Q: “Dear droid guy, I recently purchased a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. I am already having issues with the network connectivity and the LTE signal. I really hope you can help me. The problem is when I unlock my phone the H+ is displayed on the top right corner but it seems that the internet is not working. After a couple of seconds the H+ becomes H and then the phone completely loses connectivity to the network and also does not allow me to make calls or send text messages. This keeps happening throughout the day. Firstly, I contacted my carrier and also talked with other people that are on the same carrier. It would seem that the problem does not lye with the carrier.

I then proceeded with solutions found on the internet. One solution that seemed to have solved the problem was the wiping of the phone’s cache. This worked for about a day but then again the problem resurfaced making me lose connectivity. I now cannot make calls, send texts or connect to the internet. A: No carrier or service provider will ever agree that the problem is with their network. So, if you call tech support and inquire about it, you’ll be told everything is working fine. The same thing goes for Samsung, its techs will never agree to the idea that their device is the problem if there’s no solid proof. So, what you need to do is perform the master reset and if the problem remains, have the device replaced and hope the next unit is working properly.

Q: “I have a Galaxy S7 Edge that I bought on eBay. I have it connected to the Straight Talk network.  It worked great for 3 weeks and then all the sudden my mms and Internet aren’t  working. I have done a factory reset,  my APN is correct and I have gotten a new SIM card. Straight Talk says they can’t help me, and Samsung says the same. I don’t know what to do any more! Please help!

A: Then why are you staying with Straight Talk if they can’t help you with it? It is clear that when it comes to mobile data, the service provider or carrier is the first one that could be able to help you. I don’t know how you verified your APN but try to ask for it from Straight Talk’s tech support rep. The company has the history of changing its APN more often than others. Also, inquire about your account to see if it’s barred from sending/receiving MMS.

Q: “A little more background: my husband’s S7 Edge developed the same problem the same day. He is on a separate contract and we bought our phones 2 different places. I can still receive pictures, I just can’t send them. When I got my new SIM the data worked for a little while before it cut off again. And when I take my current SIM out of this phone and put it into my old S6 Edge and set up my APN, it works just fine.

How to fix Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge crashing and overheating issue after system update (easy steps)

If you own a smartphone like the Galaxy S7 Edge it is normal that the device may heat up especially if you’re watching high definition videos or playing mobile games while charging. Fixing Galaxy S7 Edge that overheats and crashes after a firmware update


There is one potential to this issue provided that it started after an update. As you know, major updates are supposed to fix problems reported by users and while that’s the case in almost every update Samsung rolled out for its devices, there are times when new issues emerge and more often it’s because of some caches that got corrupted or became obsolete during the update process.

System caches, while temporary and small, they play a great role in making your phone, apps and services run smoothly. If they get corrupted at some point, there could be a negative effect to your phone. With that said, the best thing to do about this problem that started shortly after a firmware update is to delete all system caches so that the firmware can replace them with new ones. This is how you do that…

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key, Home key, and Power key at the same time.
  3. When the phone powers on, the Android System Recovery screen appears approx. 30 seconds later.
  4. Release all of the keys.
  5. Press the Volume down key to highlight “wipe cache partition.”
  6. Press the Power key to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key to highlight “yes” and press the Power key to select.
  8. When the wipe cache partition is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.

After the phone has rebooted, continue your observation to know if it would still crash or overheats and if so, then you have to do more than just wiping the cache partition. Continue reading below for some troubleshooting procedures you can do to determine the problem and hopefully fix it.

However, I understand that not all users are comfortable doing procedures on their phones that they don’t fully understand. So, if you’re hesitant to troubleshoot your phone on your own, you better bring it to the service center so that a Samsung tech can check it for you. But for those who are willing to do something about this problem, read on as one of the methods below may help you.

Look for signs of physical and/or liquid damage

Overheating and any sort of firmware issues can be caused by a physical damage and any impact that could render the phone useless should leave a mark on the outside. So, look for scratches, dents and cracks because if you see some, it’s always possible that this problem you have on your phone is due to a physical damage.

When it comes to liquid damage, it’s bit more complicated than the previous but that doesn’t mean you can’t do something about it. To check for possible liquid damage, do the following:

  • Look into the USB / charger port to find traces of liquid or any foreign materials.
  • You may use a cotton swab to clean the area or insert a small piece of tissue to absorb the moist.
  • If you can see some debris or lint, you can use a pair of tweezers to remove them.
  • You may also check the Liquid Damage Indicator (LDI) in the SIM card slot.
  • If the LDI is white, there’s no water damage but if it turned red or purple then water or any sort of liquid found its way into your phone.

In case there are signs of physical and/or liquid damage in your phone, it’s best that you bring it to the service center so that a technician can immediately check it for you.

Observe the phone in Safe mode

Applications that keep on crashing may affect the firmware which may also result to system crashes wherein the phone would freeze for a few seconds before it would shut itself down. More often when this happens, you would have an unresponsive phone. Third-party apps that need to be updated are often the cause of this problem.

Moreover, if there are a lot of apps running in the background, it may also lead to overheating. It may happen after an update or any time. We need to rule out these possibilities and to do so, you just have to run your Galaxy S7 Edge in safe mode to temporarily disable all third-party apps. While in that environment, continue your observation to know if the phone would still crash and overheat. This is how to run your S7 Edge in safe mode:

  1. Turn your Galaxy S7 Edge off.
  2. Press and hold the Power key past the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge screen.
  3. When “SAMSUNG” appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  4. Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  5. Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  6. Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  7. Release the Volume down key when you see Safe Mode.

If the crashes and overheating disappear in this mode, then it’s clear that your third-party apps have something to do about these issues. It’s difficult to pinpoint which app is causing the problem but if you already have some apps you suspect, you should try uninstalling them first, reboot your phone in normal mode and see if problems still occur. Here’s how you uninstall an app from your S7 Edge:

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Apps.
  4. Tap the desired application in the default list or tap Menu icon > Show system apps to display preinstalled apps.
  5. Tap Uninstall.
  6. Tap Uninstall again to confirm.

I know it’s easier said than done so if you think it would be a lot easier and faster to do a reset than to find out which app causes the problem, then I suggest you backup your files and data and then perform the Factory Reset:

  1. Back up data on the internal memory. If you have signed into a Google account on the device, you have activated Anti-theft and will need your Google credentials to finish the Master reset.
  2. From any Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Tap Cloud and accounts.
  5. Tap Backup and reset.
  6. If desired, tap Back up my data to move the slider to ON or OFF.
  7. If desired, tap Restore to move the slider to ON or OFF.
  8. Tap the back key twice to return to the Settings menu, then tap General Management.
  9. Tap Reset.
  10. Tap Factory data reset.
  11. Tap Reset device.
  12. If you have screen lock turned on, enter your PIN or password.
  13. Tap Continue.
  14. Tap Delete all.

However, if your S7 Edge is still crashing or overheating in Safe mode, then you must do the next method.

Observe your phone in Recovery mode

The Android system recovery or Recovery Mode is the fail-safe of almost all Android devices. The phone that boots up into it will have all its components powered up like it usually does when it’s booted up into normal mode but the usual user interface and all other apps and services aren’t loaded. If the phone heats up while in this mode, then it’s clear the problem is with the hardware and not due to a firmware issue. In such case, the best thing you can do is bring the phone to the service center but before you do that, it’s best that you do the Master Reset. This will bring the phone back to its original or factory settings. There’s also a chance that it would fix the problem so it’s worth doing it. However, make sure you backup your files and data prior to doing this as they will be deleted. I also suggest you disable the Factory Reset Protection by removing your Google account from your phone before you even boot the device into the Recovery mode to make sure you won’t be locked out after the reset.

Once every is set and ready, follow these steps to do the Master Reset:

  1. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.

Hi. I got a Samsung S7 and the very next day in the morning it froze. I got it exchanged immediately without trying anything. My second handset worked pretty well for about a month and a half. And suddenly one night it heated up and shut down, just like my first piece.  I tried a number of rebooting and hard resetting techniques. The mobile would switch on and switch off by itself in a couple of seconds. Until finally it stopped responding to anything I did. Even after I plugged it in for charging for almost an hour.

The screen wouldn’t turn on at all. I realized I had to give it in too and get a new handset. But I’m paranoid now and am planning to sell the new handset. And I have kind of completely sworn off Samsung now. And i didn’t have a lot of apps installed either. Just WhatsApp, Snapchat, Instagram, Kik Candy Crush and Temple run 2. Unless you can tell me that there is a way I can fix this issue with my third handset in 2 months, I have no plans of keeping it and will maybe completely shift to an iPhone. Sorry about the huge description I just wanted to be completely clear. Hope you can help. Thanks! — Ishraq

Solution: Hi Ishraq. We are not Samsung to give you an assurance that a new S7 will not go bad after a few months. Doing so would be like telling you to pick a particular car brand because you’ll never be at risk while driving it. Keep in mind that as a user, you are partly responsible in maintaining your device. The only sure thing that we can tell you is that there are millions of other Galaxy S7 users who do not experience the same exact problem like you do after a couple of months. Either you are simply unlucky to have received two defective products in a row, or you are misusing your phone. While not impossible, it’s highly unlikely that a brandnew Samsung Galaxy S7 would have the same exact problem. We think that the problem is user initiated.

The best thing that you can do is to do a factory reset and observe your phone for a few days to know if firmware/software bugs have developed over time. During the observation period, make sure that you don’t install third party apps. Try to observe the phone for at least 3 days. If you don’t want to do this, go ahead and switch to iOS as we will not ask you to stay with Android.

For reference, these are steps on how to perform a factory reset, also known as master reset, on your Galaxy S7:

  • Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.
  • Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  • When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
  • Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  • Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
  • Now highlight the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
  • Wait until your phone is finished doing the Master Reset. Once completed, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and press the Power key.
  • The phone will now reboot longer than usual.

Problem #2: Galaxy S7 suddenly stopped working and no longer turns on

One day I went to the gym with my phone and wanted to listen to some music. I connected my phone to my Bluetooth wireless headphones. I started playing some music so I could workout. Then, I noticed that all of a sudden, the music stopped playing. I looked at my phone and noticed the red light on the top left corner of my phone is now lit up and even now, is still on. I found this strange because my phone was fully charged before I left for the gym. I decided to try and turn it back on by holding down the power button but the phone did not turn on. I decided to go home and charge the phone because I assumed that maybe for some reason it was just dead. My phone actually cannot charge nor will it turn on for me. Is there any solution to this problem? — Tiger

Solution: Hi Tiger. A red LED light indicates one of the following:

  • glows red when the device is connected to a charger and is charging.
  • blinks red when the device is connected to a charger but there is a problem with charging.
  • blinks red when the battery is low.

Your first task is to know if you can still turn the phone back on to a different boot mode other than normal mode. Actually, this may be the only thing that you can do at this point unless the phone can restart to, say, safe mode, or recovery mode. If the phone remains unresponsive even when it’s connected to a charger and no hardware button combinations can get it to turn back on, it’s probably suffering from a hardware failure.

To boot your phone in safe mode, here’s the steps that you can try:

  • Press and hold the Power key.
  • As soon as you can see the ‘Samsung Galaxy S7 EDGE’ on the screen, release the Power key and immediately hold the Volume Down key.
  • Continue holding the Volume Down button until the device finishes rebooting.
  • You may release it when you can see ‘Safe mode’ in the bottom left corner of the screen.

If the device boots in safe mode, that’s an indication that a third party is the reason behind the trouble. However, if nothing changes and it remains unresponsive, try to see if you can boot it in recovery mode. Here’s how:

  • Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.
  • Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  • When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.

Under recovery mode, you have a few options that you can try like wiping the cache partition and performing a factory reset.

Another boot mode that you can try is Odin or download mode. Enabling this mode is usually done if you want to manually modify your device’s firmware. If you haven’t tried it before, simply follow these steps:

  • Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.
  • Press and then hold the Home and Volume Down keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  • When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.

In general, if a phone can boot to any of these modes but not to normal mode, that’s an indicator that the problem is on the software level. However, if the situation won’t change a thing, you can safely assume that there’s a hardware failure. In some rare cases, bad Power or Volume buttons can cause the phone to remain stuck in a certain mode, or force it to never turn on at all. If you are going nowhere, asking for a replacement phone may be your only recourse.

Problem #3: Galaxy S7 can’t send SMS/text message after updating to Marshmallow

Dear Droid Guy(s). My phone recently updated to marshmallow, and now I can’t send SMS text messages.  I can receive texts and make and receive calls.  I can send MMS text messages.

I’ve tried all the fixes listed in your article but they didn’t work. 

For some reason, I can’t see my message center number in the settings of my messaging app. I’m not using a third-party app, and, when click on “safe mode,” I can only choose whether to allow access to all links and whether to be alerted to potential threats.

I wiped the cache partition in recovery mode and did a factory reset of my phone, but neither of those fixed the problem.

My network is Credo Mobile and piggy backs off of Sprint – could this be part of the issue? I’ve contacted Credo, but wanted to contact you as well.

Solution: Hi Catherine. If the new firmware (Marshmallow) has blocked your access to Message Center, even after a factory reset, then the problem is with the operating system. Users are always given access to change the Message Center number in case an issue like yours happen. Make sure that you work with Sprint or Credo so they can notify their developer team to release a patch to address the issue. There’s nothing more than you can do on your end except this.

Problem #4: Cannot preview or buy a song in Galaxy S7 Google Music app

I tried to go into my Google Music to preview a song to purchase & a triangle w/red exclamation mark came up. I went into settings to see if I could figure out the problem & when I click on Google Play it comes up saying “unfortunately settings has stopped working” & takes me back to home screen.

I called Google and they had me clear cache, clear data, uninstall, reinstall & nothing helped. She told me to restore to an earlier version but it didn’t work. I was then told to go into setting>accounts>clik on google music & uninstall so it goes back to factory version, and she would give me 5 minutes & call me back. That was Saturday, I never heard back from her. It is still not working.

I have tried to reinstall Google music & reupdate my phone & it won’t let me do anything. It is still doing the same thing. Triangle/red exclamation, cannot preview or purchase any music & it’s back to factory version. I have just about had it with this phone.  Please help, apparently ALOT of people are having the same issues & Google isn’t helping. — Cheryl

Solution: Hi Cheryl. Google Music is just one of several Google services running on your phone. We recommend that you clear the cache and data, or uninstall the update for Google Services Framework app. This is a critical app for all Google services and if the issue lies on it, making sure that it’s working back to normal is priority. If wiping the cache and data of this app won’t change anything, we suggest that you go ahead and do a factory reset instead. Doing so will not only address a potential issue with Google Services  Framework app but also Google Music.

Keep in mind that the issue may remain even after a factory reset if it’s caused by a third party app or an unofficial modification of the firmware. Be sure to bring everything back to stock first and observe how Google Music behaves to know the difference.

Problem #5: Galaxy S7 has no audio or sound but audio works when Bluetooth headset is connected

Hello! I have problems with my Galaxy. 🙁 I have no sound on the phone and even when if I plug in my headset I don’t get any sound in it. But I found a temporary fix to it. When I connect a bluetooth headset to my phone I get sound. And the phone crasches often and on any video (Facebook, twitter, youtube ect) it is in slowmotion/lagging without the bluetooth headset. And when I connect to the bluetooth headset when a video is on the video goes to normal speed and I have sound on my bluetooth headset.

I have tried to clear all cache and I have wiped my phone. It didn’t work. Also many of the apps is crashing or being very slow. And sometimes when a app crash I can’t go to homescreen. After that the whole phone restarts. And sometimes it is not even restarting it is stuck when it it restarting.

I have tried to just leave it there to restart but it took over 2 hours so I hold in the power button for 4-7 secound and I restarted it manually. I don’t get any alarm sound and when someone is calling me I don’t hear a sound for that.

I would be really happy if you have a fix for this but if not I will live with it. — Rick

Solution: Hi Rick. There may be a third party app that’s causing a conflict with other apps or the firmware. Try to boot your phone in safe mode first (steps provided above), then see if the issue continues. If the phone appears normal while in safe mode, you can assume that one of your apps is to blame.

Otherwise, follow our suggestion for Cheryl above for resolution.

If the issue remains after you’ve factory reset the phone, the issue may be on your phone’s hardware, particularly the speaker. Have the phone replaced by calling Samsung or your carrier.

To be able to charge is one of the most basic and important capability of any mobile phone. Remember, a phone without battery, regardless whether it’s cheap or expensive, will become useless however you put it.

In this post, I will address some of the most common, charging-related issues any smartphone owner may encounter anytime, anywhere. I will begin this troubleshooting post by addressing a wired charging issue involving an S7 Edge unit that no longer responds when the power cable is charged. Secondly, I will tackle about a wireless charging problem that you may also encounter if you own an S7 Edge yourself or any smartphone with wireless charging feature. Of course, we have to look into some possibilities why these issues occur in the first place and we will have to base our troubleshooting methods on them.

Thirdly, I will discuss about an issue wherein the phone heats up when it’s charging. While it is normal for the phone to heat up a bit when plugged in, it is never normal anymore when it becomes really hot that it’s uncomfortable for the user to touch it. More often than not, an issue like this may have been caused by either physical or liquid damage but there are also cases wherein a firmware issue may result to this kind of problem.

How to troubleshoot Galaxy S7 Edge that doesn’t charge when plugged in

Problem: Hi. I own the new Galaxy S7 Edge, which I bought in May last year. I’ve had an issue or two with it but I managed to fix the problems I encountered. Recently, however, my phone stopped charging and I don’t know what’s the issue with it. I don’t have a wireless charging and am not planning to buy one since I already have the charger that came with this phone. I bought at such a high price and I don’t want to spend another dime just for this phone nor will pay someone to fix it since I’ve taken care of it ever since I got it and I know I didn’t drop it on either the hard pavement or water. If you guys are kind enough to help an old man fix this phone, I would surely appreciate it. Thanks.

Troubleshooting: Charging issues are complicated naturally since it involves the charger, cable, battery and the phone itself. Since you are positive the phone didn’t suffer from a drop on a hard surface or water, then let’s try to take physical and liquid damages out of the equation for now but it doesn’t mean those factors are no longer the reason why the device is acting up like this. With all that being said, here’s what I think you should do to fix this problem:

Step 1: Try to do the Forced Reboot procedure

You didn’t tell us if the phone is currently turned on or has already powered down. There are times when the firmware crashes leaving the phone unresponsive. We often call the phone “frozen” when this happens. Most of the time, this issue can be fixed by simply doing the forced restart procedure, which obviously takes the phone out of being stuck. This is the first thing I want you to do: press and hold the Volume Down and the Power keys together for 10 to 15 seconds. Provided the device has enough battery to power up its components and load all necessary services and assuming the problem is as minor as the system crash, the device should reboot normally.

When your device booted up successfully after doing this procedure, then the problem is fixed, at least, for now. You will have to observe it closely so that when the problem happens again, you would know what the cause is. This way, you would know what to do to fix the problem for good or you can tell us about it and we would recommend a solution for you. However, if the issue wasn’t fixed by this procedure, then the next step might help.

Step 2: Charge the phone and do the Forced Reboot while it’s plugged in

The possibility that the battery was drained and caused the firmware to crash has to be ruled out. I’ve seen cases wherein the device freezes when the battery is really low especially when you’re using Power Saving features. As you may have already known, the power saving feature forces the phone to monitor the battery level while comparing it with the number of apps and services running in the background. Glitches occur all the time but they are most likely to happen when the phone is running out of battery and when the system force closes some of the services just to save up some juice. That’s why it’s possible that the firmware crashes before the battery gets drained and that’s one of the reasons why it won’t respond when the charger is plugged in.

So, plug the charger into the electric outlet and then plug the cable to your phone. Regardless whether the phone responds or not, press and hold the Volume Down and the Power keys together for 10 to 15 seconds. If the phone boots up, then problem solved, otherwise, proceed with the next troubleshooting step below.

Step 3: Leave the phone charging for at least 10 minutes

If both steps 1 and 2 failed, then allow the phone to charge for at least 10 minutes and then attempt to turn it on normally. If it doesn’t, then try the forced reboot procedure again.

There are times when the phone takes a few minutes to be able to recognize that electricity is flowing through its circuits especially when the battery was completely drained. In such is the case with your device, then it should charge within 10 minutes provided the charger is just working fine.

Step 4: Attempt to boot your phone up in Safe Mode

The Safe Mode is your phone’s diagnostic state. It loads up all necessary services and processes without loading third-party apps. While it doesn’t fix the issue, it gives you an overview what the real problem with your phone is. For instance, if your phone boots up in safe mode, then we can say at this point that the cause of the problem is one or some of the third-party apps installed on your phone. Therefore, you just have to find those apps and uninstall them.

Here’s how you boot your S7 Edge in safe mode:

  1. Make sure the phone is off
  2. Press and hold the ‘Power key’
  3. When the Samsung logo appears, quickly release the ‘Power key’, then press and hold ‘Volume Down key’
  4. Continue pressing the ‘Volume Down key’ until you are boot to the home screen
  5. Then, the ‘Safe Mode’ will display on the lower-side of the screen.
  6. Safe Mode is now activated

And this is how you uninstall apps from your phone:
Assuming that you on the main screen

  1. Tap the ‘App menu’
  2. Find the  ‘Settings icon’ and tap it
  3. Navigate by swiping up and down through options
  4. Find and tap ‘Applications’ or ‘App’ option
  5. Tap ‘Application Manager’
  6. Once inside the ‘Application Manager’, simply tap the apps that you think it causes the problem
  7. Then tap the ‘Uninstall’ option
  8. Confirm the Uninstall
  9. After confirming, it will process and give you a confirmation that it is successful

If the phone still refuses to boot up in safe mode, then the next step might help.

Step 5: Try to boot your phone up into the Recovery Mode

At this stage, we’ll try to find out if the phone is still capable of powering up its hardware components even without loading the firmware and we can do that if we try to boot up your phone into the Recovery Mode. Just follow these steps:

  1. Press and hold the ‘Power key’ + ‘Volume Up key’ + ‘Home key’ together
  2. Wait until the phone vibrates and Android mascot appears
  3. After that, quickly release the ‘Power key’ but continue pressing the ‘Home key’ and ‘Volume up key’

If the device still won’t boot up after this, then there’s nothing much we can do about the phone that doesn’t turn on or boot up. Needless to say, have your phone checked by a technician.

How to troubleshoot Galaxy S7 Edge that won’t charge with wireless charger

Problem: My S7 Edge just started to act up and now it won’t charge with my wireless charger. I already tried rebooting it several times but it still not charging when I place it on the charging pad. The phone was given to me brand new and I bought the wireless charger from a third-party but it was working fine ever since. I’m not really sure what happened but I only got 6% of battery left. I’ve already turned on the Power Saving mode to even save up power but I just want my phone to work like before. Please help me.

Troubleshooting: Inductive charging is a bit more complicated than the typical wired charging and considering the technology being used today still needs to be refined, we really cannot expect this feature to be 100% working like the wired method. That is why when troubleshooting a wireless charging issue, it’s imperative that you find out if it has something to do with the charging method or not. To make it easier for you to understand, here’s what you need to do:

Step 1: Try charging your phone with a wired charger

I’m not saying you use this method to charge your phone because I know how convenient it is to just place your phone on the charging pad and take it anytime you want without having to disconnect the cable.  But I want you to do this to know if the phone still charges with the typical charger because if it does, then there’s a greater possibility that the problem is with the charger itself because as long as the phone charges fine with the wired charger, the battery is fine and all other circuits that are essential for charging.

Step 2: Use a different wireless charger to probe further

Do this if the phone charges just fine with the wired charger but I’m not saying you need to buy a new wireless charger when we haven’t confirmed yet it it’s really the problem. You may borrow from someone who has a wireless charger and try your phone to see if it charges with other wireless chargers because if so, then you know what the real problem is.

However, if your phone doesn’t charge with other wireless chargers, then it might already be a problem with the phone.

Step 3: Try to reset your phone and see if it charges wirelessly after that

Firmware issues may cause the phone not to charge so to rule out this possibility, you need to reset your phone. But of course, you need to backup all your files and data first before following the steps below:

  1. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key. NOTE: It doesn’t matter how long you press and hold the Home and Volume Up keys, it won’t affect the phone but by the time you press and hold the Power key, that’s when the phone starts to respond.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  4. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds. NOTE: The “Installing system update” message may show on the screen for several seconds before displaying the Android system recovery menu. This is just the first phase of the entire process.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  6. Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
  7. Now highlight the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
  8. Wait until your phone is finished doing the Master Reset. Once completed, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and press the Power key.
  9. The phone will now reboot longer than usual.

After the reset and your phone still won’t charge via wireless charger, then have it checked by a technician.

What to do when your Galaxy S7 Edge heats up while charging

Problem: I’m kind of worried now after reading cases of Galaxy Note 7 exploding while charging because my Galaxy S7 Edge is heating up every time I connect it’s charger. I know it’s not normal because this issue may have started just a couple of days back. What must I do to fix this problem? Can you guys suggest things that need to be done? Thanks.

Troubleshooting: There are a lot of factors that may contribute why this problem occurs with your device so it’s imperative you perform troubleshooting as the phone that heats up may be a sign that the device is suffering from a serious hardware problem. To make it easier for you though, here’s what you need to do if your Galaxy S7 Edge is heating up while charging:

  1. Boot it up in safe mode and try to charge while it’s in that state. All third-party apps are temporarily disabled so if one of them or some is causing the problem, it shouldn’t heat up when in that mode even if you leave it charging for hours.
  2. Turn off your phone and try to charge it. If the device still heats up in safe mode, then power it down and plug it in. If it still heats up, then we might be facing a serious hardware issue.
  3. Connect your phone to a computer to know if it still heats up. All you need to do is let the phone charge for a few minutes to know if it still heats up if it’s a computer or laptop that’s charging it. If it does, then it must be an issue with the phone.
  4. Send it in for checkup and/or repair. Don’t take this problem lightly as charging problems may result to a more serious issue if left alone. So, if you did everything above and your device is still heating up while charging, then seek help from a technician to have the device checked.

How to fix Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge that won’t read the mounted microSD card [Troubleshooting Guide]

Troubleshooting Galaxy S7 Edge that can’t read the SD card

It’s easy to determine whether the microSD card is just corrupt or totally damaged but you can’t know that without doing some necessary procedures.

Step 1: Reboot your phone first

If it’s the first time the phone failed to read from the microSD card, don’t do anything yet. Instead, reboot your phone and see if it can detect and read the card during boot up.

System crashes will also result to phone not being able to read the external storage. This has happened a lot in the past and some S7 Edge users are currently bugged by it. That is the reason why you need to reboot your phone first as you might be dealing with a firmware crash issue and not necessarily an SD card problem.

Step 2: Unmount the SD card, clean its interface, then remount

Should the problem remain after the reboot, then try to remove the microSD card and using a dry, clean cloth and wipe its interface or receptors. There are times when they get corroded and won’t conduct properly. As a result, the phone may not be able to read from the card.

The thing is even the simple unmounting and remounting will force the phone to detect the external storage and take time to read from it. So, it’s really very helpful to do this step after the reboot.

Step 3: Let your computer / laptop read the SD card

If your device is still incapable of reading the microSD card it used to read before, then you need to probe further to know if it’s a problem with the card or your phone and there’s no better way to do that than to let your laptop or computer read the card.

Computers can easily read removable devices even those that have issues. So, to know if the problem is the card or the phone, let your laptop or computer check it for you.

If the card is corrupted and the computer can’t read from it, you’ll immediately be prompted whether to reformat it or not. However, if it can be read and files can be accessed from it, then grab the opportunity to back them up just to make sure they won’t be deleted.

Once you’ve backed up your files, try to reformat the card using FAT32 and remount it to your phone. If the phone still refuses to read from it, then there could really be a problem with it.

Now, to probe if the phone is the issue, try to use a different SD card that know works. Mount it on your phone and if it won’t read from it, then double check there’s nothing blocking the receptors inside.

Step 4: Get the phone repaired or buy a new SD card

If the phone works fine with other SD cards but not the one you were using, then it’s time to buy a new one. I understand you may not been able to backup your data but you don’t have much of a choice.

On the other hand, if the phone cannot read from other SD cards as well, then the issue might be with the phone. So, a question about whether or not to update the phone was raised and of course, we have to investigate this as it seems to be a very serious firmware issue, although some cases may have been caused by hardware problems.

First off, I want to put a clear distinction between the terms “booting up” and “powering on” to avoid confusion. When you say the phone isn’t booting up, it actually powers on but it can’t successfully load everything and reach the Home screen. Most of the time, the device is stuck on the logo or the black screen after that. Boot loop is also a part of this problem because of the time the logo is farthest the phone can reach before it restarts.

When you say the phone isn’t turning on, it means that there’s no sign of power whatsoever. The booting up issue is the first I want to tackle in this post because more often, it’s firmware-related. Below are some troubleshooting steps you can actually use to see if you can fix the problem on your own without any help from a technician or your provider. But before that, here’s one of the problems we received.

As our reader said the S7 Edge’s performance noticeably deteriorated before it actually turned itself off and got stuck on the black screen after the logo appears on the screen. It’s actually a typical “stuck during boot up” issue and while it seems minor based on the description, there were reports about the same problem that are more complicated than this one. Therefore, we need to troubleshoot the device thoroughly and not just based on the problem I cited here.

Step 1: Verify it’s not just an issue with any of your downloaded apps

There are cases wherein the phone gets stuck during boot up as soon as the update gets installed and there many also reported to have used their devices for a few days before the problem started. But whatever the case is, the safest thing to do while you’re still trying to find out what the culprit is is to isolate the problem but restarting the device in Safe Mode. In this state, the device will run at default settings with only pre-installed apps and built-in services running in the background. In other words, all third-parties will be temporarily disabled.

The other term for Safe Mode is diagnostic state wherein you can immediately know if the problem is with pre-installed apps, firmware or downloaded apps.

If the problem still occurs even in safe mode, then it’s either a problem with the pre-installed app or the firmware itself, otherwise, the third-party apps have to be looked into. You need to find out which app is actually causing the problem and uninstall it, although it’s really difficult to determine which one is the culprit. But anyway, here are the steps on how to boot your Galaxy S7 Edge in safe mode:

  1. Press and hold the Power key.
  2. As soon as you can see the ‘Samsung Galaxy S7 EDGE’ on the screen, release the Power key and immediately hold the Volume Down key.
  3. Continue holding the Volume Down button until the device finishes rebooting.
  4. You may release it when you can see ‘Safe mode’ in the bottom left corner of the screen.

When it happens, you should delete the system cache so that Android will be forced to create new files that will replace them. So, here’s how you boot your S7 Edge in Recovery Mode and wipe the cache partition:

  1. Turn off the phone.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  4. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.

If the phone gets stuck during boot up still, then you have no other choice but to do the next step.

Step 3: Boot your phone in Recovery Mode again and do the Master Reset

For firmware issues, this is a very effective procedure as it doesn’t just delete your apps, data and files, it also reformats the entire data partition where system files are saved. In that effect, no corrupt will be left behind that’s why it’s imperative you do this step before deciding to send the phone for checkup and/or repair. Here’s how you do the master reset:

  1. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key. NOTE: It doesn’t matter how long you press and hold the Home and Volume Up keys, it won’t affect the phone but by the time you press and hold the Power key, that’s when the phone starts to respond.

Step 1: Verify that it’s not just a problem caused by a system crash

The firmware works hand-in-hand with the hardware but there are times the former crashes and when it happens, both of them may suffer. Being unresponsive is just one of those symptoms. Since the Galaxy S7 Edge doesn’t have a removable battery, you cannot just do the battery pull trick just like old models.

Samsung engineers, however, already thought of this so they included a combination that will simulate battery disconnect. That’s what you need to to do rule out the possibility of a system crash. To do that, the press and hold the Volume Down button and the Power key together for 10 seconds. If there’s enough battery and that there’s no actual damage to the hardware, the phone should reboot.

Step 2: Charge the phone to make sure the battery has enough charge

It’s a power-related issue so you immediately need to rule out the possibility that the battery only got drained that’s why the phone won’t turn on even just after a firmware update.

Aside from that, you can also immediately tell if the firmware detects the phone being connected to the charger because if so, it should show the usual charging signs like the charging icon on the screen and the red or green LED on top of the screen. If none of those show up, then try a different charger and if still no, then you might be looking at a possible hard-bricked phone. Your last chance is to send the phone for repair.

If you’re verified it’s not a battery issue and that the phone actually responds while charging but the device still won’t turn on, then try to wipe the cache partition but first you need to boot your phone in recovery mode. If that fails as well, then the reset is also necessary provided the phone turns on. Lastly, you need a real technician to get it fix if the problem remains.
