The #Samsung #Galaxy #S5 for example which was initially released running on Android KitKat has now been updated to Android Marshmallow. Most owners of this device already have the latest update running on the phone and have been quite pleased with it. Other owners however are having issues with the update which is what we will be discussing today. In this latest installment of our troubleshooting series we will tackle the Galaxy S5 will not upgrade issue & other related problems.

S5 Will Not Upgrade

Problem: My device will not upgrade from stock. I have tried numerous times. With memory card, without memory card. I’ve had it loaded with apps and factory reset. Tried using kies and over wifi updating. There’s over 6gb free right now. It always gets to 25% when it crashes and there’s no error code. I have tried everything I can find or read about. I really don’t know what else I can do to update my phone other than trying to root and flash it. Please help

Solution: Have you tried doing the update using a different Wi-Fi connection? If the update still fails then you should consider manually flashing the updated firmware to your phone. Instructions on how to do this can be found at several of the popular android forums online.

S5 Rooted Will Not Update

Problem: my 16gb phone is rooted; I have a 64gb microsd card; last year used following link to get from kitkat to lollipop successful, no issue with pre-rooted rom at 5.0. now at&t is pushing (presumably) 5.1.1 and it doesn’t install, I assume since it is rooted; I’ve backed up with TiB to ext sd card; factory reset and restored apps/setting with google sync/backup/restore, only to leave 2.8 gb free; subsequent OTA update failed; factory reset #2; this time did not restore applications via google sync; attempted OTA again, still failed; please advise

Solution: The first issue I can see here is that the free internal storage space is quite low at 2.8GB. You should free up more space then check if you are able to update the phone. Try to do the update using the OTA method and by using Kies.

The second issue that could be causing the problem is that the phone is rooted. Try to unroot the device then check if you are now able to update the phone.

If the update still fails then your other option is to manually flash the updated firmware file to the device. Instructions on how to do this can be found at several of the popular Android forums online.

S5 Messages App Not Responding After Marshmallow Update

Problem: Since updating to marshmallow this morning, I am unable to open my stock messaging app which is the one I use. I am assuming the texts are still there but can’t tell. It keeps saying messages is not responding, wait or close. It also keeps rebooting. I have cleared the cache etc.

Solution: If you have already cleared the cache and data of the messaging app which doesn’t help the next thing you should do is to wipe the cache partition of the phone from the recovery mode. This clears out any temporary data stored in the device which could be causing the problem. If the issue persists then I recommend that you do a factory reset. Take note that this deletes your phone data so better make a backup copy first.

Problem: Okay so basically you’ve been a lot of help to me to find answers to my friends problems in their phones…  But today I need your help. So I’ll go on with basic stuff and tell what I’ve figured out already,  drop me a solution which you hope would suffice… The phone is a S5 and I’ve been using it for more than one year and I’m very familiar with the system…  A few days ago it entered a mode to download a new custom os…  (the warning signs and triangle appeared with the Droid)  however after this certain event..  My phone doesn’t detect charge and won’t work…  So I’ve checked if it’s the battery, and it’s not the battery or the port or the technical stuff that’s causing it and I can be certain of that… But my own research shows that once a phone is in that  “warning custom os download” screen they wouldn’t Charge… So I think it’s a fault with the os…  Or at least something similar…  Please help me out…  I’m hoping that one of your technicians could give me a good idea of how to deal with the current issue…  Thanks Btw…  Keep on the good work.

Solution: Sometimes this issue can happen if your volume button is stuck. Try taking out the phone battery then press repeatedly on the volume buttons. This might get it unstuck. Reinsert the battery then turn on the phone. If the issue still occurs then check if you are able to access Safe Mode. From here backup your phone data.Once you have made a backup of your phone data restart your phone in recovery mode then do a factory reset.

S5 Quick Setting Buttons Missing After Marshmallow Update

Problem: I just updated my phone to the Marshmallow update and I lost all of my  active buttons. Nothing is there now. Even when I go into Settings>Notification Panel there are no options for buttons. Underneath where is has the Edit Quick Settings buttons there aren’t any. It also crashes the Settings app when I try and turn on the Recommended Apps. I am certain that the update to Marshmallow caused this. Am I alone or does anyone else have this problem too?

Solution: Try to backup your phone data then do a factory reset. If after the reset the same issue still occurs then head out over to the Galaxy apps Store then check if you are able to download the QuickPanel Restore app. Although this is designed for the S6 it could work for your phone. If it doesn’t work then you will have to wait for a new update from Samsung that fixes this bug.

S5 Quick Setting Button Missing in Marshmallow

Problem: Hey there, so I’ve recently been updated to marshmallow. I no longer have the quick set buttons when you swipe down from the top.  Have tried to re-add them in the notification panel setting. When I press the “Recommended Apps” option to try to change it from off to on, my settings is closed on me with the error “unfortunately settings has stopped”.In addition, trying to hit Active Buttons or Reset does nothing and there are no entries for active buttons. On the main settings page when you hit the three little dots and press Edit Quick Settings, the 12 items I would like as my quick select items are chosen – but they show nothing. I have removed the battery, reset etc. I cleaned the cache from the settings app in applications, AND pressed the “reset to factory” with no luck. HELP ?? Thanks for your time.

Solution: It looks like this could be a bug in the latest software update as a lot of S5 owners are also having this issue. Try to backup your phone data then do a factory reset. If after the reset the issue still occurs try to download the QuickPanel Restore app from the Galaxy App Store. This app is designed for the S6 but you should try it in your phone. If this doesn’t fix the problem then you will have to wait for another update that will have a fix to this bug.
