Hey, I’ve had my phone for almost 2 years, and recently I started having an issue with my battery suddenly draining really fast on random days. I end up having to recharge halfway through the day, and the charging is unusually slow on those days. The problem randomly comes and goes. I constantly keep my phone on power saving mode. Turning Wi-Fi and location on or off doesn’t make a difference. When I turn off both Wi-Fi and mobile data, the problem appears to go away. Since this happens on sporadic days, I don’t think there’s a problem with the actual battery, otherwise the problem would be consistent.
I went into settings>battery and couldn’t identify the culprit. My battery was at 45% and the top usage was for the screen, at a mere 10%. Next was Facebook at a reasonable 7%. I added up all the apps that were showing (there were 10 items, the lowest of which was device idle which used 2%), and there was 15% or so unaccounted for. So something is using up a considerable amount of battery power, and I don’t know what. The problem occurs randomly even when I’m at home or at work where everything is the same day to day, so it’s not related to me being in an area where there’s poor signal or something. Restarting the phone and doing a battery pull have no effect. I also cleared the cache partition, and it didn’t help. I would really appreciate your help in identifying and fixing this issue! Solution: Hi Sofia. Battery drain issue can be caused by one or a combination of many possible factors. It’s good that you checked battery usage under settings although we say the information you can glean from this page is most of the time insufficient to begin troubleshooting in the right direction. Majority of battery drain cases are due to apps and their associated processes and services so we suggest that you do further checking. It’s possible that certain apps and services are scheduled to run at specific hours of a day or specific days only. This does not necessarily mean they’re bad as they may simply be updating their contents like most social networking apps and shopping apps do most of the time.
Since there’s no utility app in Android that allows a user to keep tabs of when apps update themselves, we recommend that you do a factory reset and observe the phone for a few days. Make sure that you don’t install any third party applications during this time so you can compare how power management works without them. Although you can also boot the phone in safe mode, we deem factory reset a more effective method in checking if one or more third party apps is causing the battery drain issue in this case.
For reference, here are the steps on how to perform a factory reset:
- Make to back up your personal data like photos, videos, music, contacts, etc.
- Power down the Galaxy S5.
- Press and hold the Volume up button, the Home button, and the Power button together until you see the Android on screen.
- Use Volume down to highlight the wipe data/factory reset option and press the Power button to select it.
- Use Volume down again to highlight Yes – delete all user data and press Power to select it.
- Use the Power button to select Reboot system now.
- When the S5 restarts it should be completely wiped and ready to set up again.
Hi. I have a major issue. I purchased an Otterbox for my Samsung Galaxy S5 and somebody in my residence knocked the phone, while encased, onto the floor. After first inspection there are no scratches – BUT THE SCREEN IS BLACK PERMANENTLY. The phone actually works – it powers on; i hear messages being received, I see and feel vibration. HOWEVER The screen is doing nothing in the slightest. Not one flicker. I need assistance desperate. I don’t want to pay more money after all this because the whole point of this otterbox case was to prevent this from happening. SO my question is – What do I do? How do I fix it on my own? It is definitely looking like a LCD connection problem. I’ll pay you in love if you help. — Jacob
Solution: Hi Jacob. Putting your electronic device inside a protective case doesn’t make it immune to damage if you drop it. An OtterBox case can only provide protection so much. Although most of the time a drop does not result to serious problems, yours may be the exception. Since it’s obvious that you have a bad screen assembly, your only option right now is to have said component checked and replaced. There is no software hack that can fix a malfunctioning screen.
Hi my name is Austyn. I have had my phone for 2 years in November and i haven’t used in it about 7 months because I’m not sure why but the screen would start to turn black and stay black after i turned it off. And it would stay like that for a week and then work again until i turned it off again. I got pretty fed up and did a soft reset and tried to uninstall apps in safe mode and i even did a hard reset. None of those worked in the end. Now after the hard reset the screen will not work at all and hasn’t turned on since about February. Then the little light up buttons next to the home button don’t turn on either. i tried to do another hard reset but it won’t even appear on the screen so I can select it. Same with safe mode. When the phone is on and on the home screen blank i can hear it unlocking when i touch the screen because my password is just a swipe. i Also get Notifcations still. Im sorry if all this information is disorganized i just don’t know why this is happening and still, should i just get a new phone? — Austyn
Solution: Hi Austyn. It looks like you have a similar issue with Jacob above. Since you can’t even boot your phone in Recovery or Safe mode, you can assume that you have a hardware issue. What specific hardware failure is for the technician to know. Make sure to bring the phone to Samsung or a compenent repair shop.
Hi. I have a Galaxy S5 on Verizon wireless’s service and I have been trying to sign on to my hospital’s Wi-Fi; there is poor service on my hospital floor due to all the OR’s. When I attempt to connect to their wi-fi, a message pops up that says “Your connection isn’t private, attackers might be trying to steal your information.” From www/google.com the only options I have are at the bottom of the page and it says reload or advanced. I use the chrome application that came preloaded on the phone to access internet; I went into settings for the chrome app and made sure I didn’t have any sites blocked, pop-ups were unblocked, and I allowed all other options that may restrict my internet access. I have been having this problem for about one month and had no problems connecting previously. Thank you for your help. — Emily
Solution: Hi Emily. On your end, the first thing that you want to do is to ensure that your phone’s Wi-Fi functionality is still working. If you haven’t yet, try connecting to another Wi-Fi network either at home or in another place. You also want to check if you can reach the internet via Google Chrome app. Once you’ve established that your device’s Wi-Fi is working and Chrome browser is okay, talk to your hospital’s IT staff so they can help you. They may have set some form of filtering system that excluded your device from connecting. Of course, if the issue is due to poor Wi-Fi signal where you’re at, there’s nothing much that you can do about it unless you can move to a location with improved signal strength.
I just bought a refurbished Samsung Galaxy S5 from woot.com. I’ve had it for less than a week- it has not been dropped or gotten wet. I downloaded some apps to the phone 2 days ago, but did not have any problems yesterday. This morning, I got an error message saying “Unfortunately, undefined daemon…” (something, basically it doesn’t work). I tried to find an error code to fix it, but then more messages kept popping up, saying the Contacts didn’t work, Calendar doesn’t work, etc.
So I decided to turn it off and then on again. It turned off fine. But when I turned it on, it started the T-Mobile jingle and then stopped abruptly. It acted like it was trying to start up, but never did. I tried to turn it off again, but it wouldn’t. I waited 10 minutes for the thing to start up, and it never did. I finally took the battery out and tried to restart. Same thing happened. I tried taking my MicroSD card out and restarted it. Same thing happened. I even tried taking my SIM card out and restarted it. Same thing. It won’t start. I do not know what Android version this is. — Cj
Solution: Hi Cj. Hopefully the issue is caused by a bad battery only. Try using a different working Galaxy S5 battery to see if that will power the phone back on. If a known working S5 battery won’t power the phone, it may be too late. Before you ask for a replacement though, you can attempt to restart the phone in a different boot mode.
Boot in Recovery mode:
- Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
- Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the Samsung Galaxy S5 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
- When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
- Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
- You can either wipe the cache partition or do a factory reset when in this mode.
Boot in Download Mode:
- Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
- Press and then hold the Home and Volume DOWN keys, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the Samsung Galaxy S5 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume DOWN keys.
- Wait until the Download screen appears.
- If you can boot the phone in download mode but not in other modes, that means that your only way out may be to flash a stock or custom firmware.
- Use Google to look for a guide on how to do it.
Boot in safe mode:
- Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
- Press and hold the Power button.
- Once the ‘Samsung Galaxy S5’ logo appears, release the Power key and immediately press and hold the Volume Down button.
- Continue holding the button until the phone finishes rebooting.
- Once you see the text “Safe mode” at the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume Down button.
- The only difference of safe mode from normal mode is that the former prevents third party apps from running. If you can boot the phone in safe mode but not in normal mode, uninstall all apps until the issue (that prevents you from booting normally) is eliminated.
Again, if you can’t power your phone into any of these modes, find a way to have it replaced or its hardware checked at the minimum.
Okay, so I was on the default News/Media app on my Galaxy S5 when the app completely crashed on me. I could not do anything at all. I could not use homepage, reload, go back, etc, nothing. So I hit the power button. I didn’t hold it, I only just pressed it so the screen would go off, but phone would still be on. That was probably a mistake as now I can’t even get the phone back on. It is just a black screen. the notification light still works, the two light buttons at the bottom still work, but there is no screen whatsoever. The phone is still on. Once for a second the screen went a yellow-green colour for a few seconds before going black again. Still cannot do anything. I’ve tried everything, I’ve plugged it into my charger again, I’ve taken both my sim card and my battery out, I’ve tried different start ups. Nothing really works, was wondering if you could potentially help. — Ben
Solution: Hi Ben. If you already tried the basic software stuff and have tried booting the device on different modes, it’s safe to assume that your phone may have suffered a permanent hardware damage. The hardware failure may have happened while you were using the last app. If you want a resolution, we suggest that you call Samsung or your carrier know about the situation so they can either do a repair or replacement.
