Problem 1: Galaxy Note 5 not charging anymore, won’t boot up
So my phone wont charge. It’s a Samsung Galaxy Note 5. Yesterday it was charging fine. I noticed a few rising problems but didn’t make anything of it until now. my phone just turned a year old and has been experiencing problems. I will charge it to 100% before i go to bed then unplug it so it doesn’t overheat. then when i wake up in the morning. it’s dead and that’s kinda annoying because i gotta get up and go to school. (and i wake up late because of a dead phone, which means no alarms.) and this has been going on for about a month. then today it died and won’t even charge. like i’ve tried several different chargers, wireless charging, everything, on wireless it stays at 0% and keeps restarting. It won’t turn on so i can’t troubleshoot. I need my phone because i’m a petsitter and my clients can’t reach me without it functioning. — Maryrose Durbin
Solution: Hi Maryrose. We understand how frustrating this problem can be for anyone, especially since there’s very limited troubleshooting steps that you can try to fix it. The key though is to see if the phone still boots up since what you said is true, that no troubleshooting can be done if it won’t turn on at all. And since you’ve already tried to use other chargers (including a wireless charger), the only thing that’s left for you to do is to see if the phone can turn on to other modes. If it can, there may be a chance to fix the issue at your level. Below are the steps that you can do:
Boot in Recovery mode:
- Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
- Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the Samsung Galaxy logo shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
- When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
- You can either wipe the cache partition or do a factory reset when in this mode.
Boot in Download Mode:
- Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
- Press and then hold the Home and Volume DOWN keys, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the Samsung Galaxy logo shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume DOWN keys.
- Wait until the Download screen appears.
- If you can boot the phone in download mode but not in other modes, that means that your only way out may be to flash a stock or custom firmware.
- Use Google to look for a guide on how to do it.
Boot in safe mode:
- Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
- Press and hold the Power button.
- Once the Samsung Galaxy logo appears, release the Power key and immediately press and hold the Volume Down button.
- Continue holding the button until the phone finishes rebooting.
- Once you see the text “Safe mode” at the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume Down button.
- The only difference of safe mode from normal mode is that the former prevents third party apps from running. If you can boot the phone in safe mode but not in normal mode, uninstall all apps until the issue (that prevents you from booting normally) is eliminated.
Remember, if the phone power’s on to any of the modes above, that means that there may be an app or software issue preventing it from booting up. If nothing changes though — which means that the phone does not turn on at all, no LED light, no sound notifications, no vibrations — it means your phone is not charging, or there may be other hardware malfunction that we don’t know. You should let Samsung or a third party professional check the hardware so the cause of the problem can be identified.
Problem 2: Galaxy Note 5 wake lock issue
My Samsung Galaxy Note 5 started freezing, lags and if I press restart it starts turning on by own. If I press the power button it is showing “DOWN LOADING DON’T TURN OFF” so I pressed power , volume down and main menu. It’s resettled but it won’t turn. Finally, again removed battery I kept for charged. it showed 60 percent (sometimes I plug in charger but mobile won’t detect the charger). I waited for 100 percent then I started …mobile turned on and as soon as I opened wake lock power manager app and I selected partial wake lock.at present phone working fine without freeze and lags .but if i try to restart or power off and on….then I have to follow the same procedure.help me what is the main cause of this problem. I don’t like to go Samsung service centre straightway they will say motherboard. ..after spending 700 usd for this Note 5 this is unacceptable .at present with help of wake lock working fine. — VIJAYARAGHAVAN
Solution: Hi VIJAYARAGHAVAN. We noticed a similar problem in some Note 4s several months before but thought it doesn’t occur in Note 5 devices. Well, we’re clearly wrong. The problem is apparently caused by inefficient coding in some Android firmware versions. Poor coding causes the phone to turn off indefinitely and sometimes, even almost permanently in other cases. Wake Lock app prevents this from happening at a cost of fast battery drain. Google and Samsung have already got wind of the problem a few months ago though and a patch had already been released. If your phone still runs an older version of Android at this time, be sure to update it as soon as possible.
If your Note 5 is already running the latest available Android version from your carrier, consider doing a factory reset to see if it will fix the problem.
- Turn off your Samsung Galaxy Note 5 completely.
- Press and hold the Volume Up and the Home buttons first, and then press and hold the Power key.
- Keep the three buttons pressed and when ‘Samsung Galaxy Note5’ shows, release the Power key but continue holding the other two.
- Once the Android logo shows, release both the Volume Up and Home buttons.
- The notice ‘Installing system update’ will show on the screen for 30 to 60 seconds before the Android system recovery screen is shown with its options.
- Use the Volume Down key to highlight the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ and press the Power key to select it.
- When the process is complete, use the Volume Down key to highlight the option ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key to restart the phone.
- The reboot may take a little longer to complete but don’t worry and wait for the device to become active.
Problem 3: Galaxy Note 5 won’t unlock due to incorrect Google credentials
Good evening. I use fingerprint verification on my Note 5. I somehow blocked it and forgot the backup password. I can lock in via Gmail but the data and wifi was turned off when it locked. Now it wont turn back on so it can’t verify my Google account. I realize that I’m an idiot but I would really appropriate any advice or help you might have. — Bianca102728
Solution: Hi Bianca102728. If your phone won’t recognize your Google account at this time, factory reset, which should allow you to regain access to your device again, is rendered useless as your Note 5 will be locked anyway by Factory Reset Protection. The only thing that you can do right now is to send your Note 5 together with its proof of purchase to the nearest Samsung store so they can reset the phone to its defaults using a special tool.
If you don’t have the proof of purchase anymore, consider flashing the firmware. Flashing is basically modifying core system files so be very careful when doing it. Be sure to use a good flashing guide for your particular phone model and follow the steps to the letter to avoid problems. We don’t provide specific flashing guides so make use of other sites that offers support to Android community like XDA-Developers Forum.
Problem 4: Galaxy Note 5 losing battery fast
Hey, I have a problem with my Note 5. The battery drain fast. sometimes the phone reboot and lose like 10-15% of the battery. i turn off everything from wifi, 3G, sync..etc brightness on low and went asleep on 100% battery and woke up on 15% battery in less than 8 hours. I checked the battery usage and say (cell standby at 32% and Android system on 26% and android os on 23% and device idle on 17%). i tried to wipe cache and factory reset. I don’t think the problem is caused by marshmallow 6.0.1. Thanks. — Mohammed Bshote
Solution: Hi Mohammed. If Cell Standby consumes 32% of battery usage in an 8-hour window, that can be an indication that the operating system is kept awake by something. This something can be an app or an operating system bug so the best thing that you can do right now is to do another round of factory reset and observe how fast battery drain becomes when there are no apps installed. In other words, you want to see if there’s any difference in battery consumption when the phone is factory reset and without third party apps. Be sure to observe the phone for at least 24 hours after you factory reset it. If there’s any significant difference, that means that one of the apps you installed is to blame. You must use the process of elimination to identify what the problematic app is.
On the other hand, if battery drain remains even after you’ve factory reset and there are no apps installed, it may suggest a battery or motherboard issue. You should consider sending the phone in for repair so its hardware can be checked.
