The #Samsung #Galaxy #Note4 has undergone several software updates since it was first released in 2014. First released running on Android KitKat, this phone later on got the Lollipop update. Today, most owners have already updated their device to Android Marshmallow. Getting the latest update on your phone is a must since it comes with improved features that make the phone work better. There are however instances when issues can occur because of the update. In this latest installment of our troubleshooting series we will tackle the Galaxy Note 4 not responding since last update issue & other related problems.

Note 4 Not Responding Since Last Update

Problem: Hi, since the last OS update 2 weeks ago, my smartphone keeps freezing, screen going black, not responding to any command, sometimes rebooting itself… the only way to unfreeze the phone is a soft reboot… Sometimes it comes back to normal after a while (?!?) when i don’t have time to deal with it immediately… Also recently i saw a screen I’ve never seen before with colorful text about my phone system (model, kernel etc..) on top left of the screen and i the middle, a huge android logo and text saying “Downloading… don’t disconnect the Target”… i did a soft reboot again… but it came back a bit later… Please let me know if you could help. Thanks so much in advance

Solution: When our phone freezes or becomes unresponsive right after a software update then chances are it is cause by old software data that has not been completely removed. What you need to do first in this case is to backup your phone data then do a factory reset. Once the reset is done do not install anything in your phone yet. Try to check first if the issue still occurs.

If the issue still occurs or if you are still getting the downloading error message then the problem could be caused by a corrupt software update. If this is the case you will need to manually flash the latest software update you your phone. Instructions on how to do this can be found at several of the popular Android forums online.

Note 4 No New Software Update Available

Problem: I just recently bought this AT&T unlocked phone and activated it with T-Mobile. I was trying to update it to lollipop but when i check for updates it states that it is already up to date. I also checked with kies and it states it is up to date. What other options do I have or can I do in order to update it to lollipop or if possible, to marshmallow as well?

Solution: Since this is originally an AT&T device it is designed to check for the update from the AT&T servers which your phone doesn’t have access to anymore. The best thing to do is to get an AT&T SIM card in your device then update your phone. If you don’t have access to an AT&T SIM card then follow the troubleshooting steps  listed below to update your phone. Move to the next step if the current step you performed fails to update the device.

  • Backup your phone data then do a factory reset. Try to check if an update is available.
  • Connect your phone using a USB cord to a computer with Kies or Smart Switch running. Check if an update is available.
  • Consider manually flashing the latest software update to your phone. Instructions on how to do this can be found at several of the popular Android forums online.

Note 4 Multiple Error Messages After Software Update

Problem: I attempted to do a software update from my mac.  After about 2 hours, the computer said “100 %”but also gave me a message saying I needed to open usb connection and select transferring media files/File transfer.  When I looked at my phone, it was just a black screen and then error messages started to pop saying “Unfortunately the process has stopped” along with “Unfortunately Unified Daemon has stopped” along with a whole bunch of other error messages telling me many of the things on my phone such as clock, bluetooth share, air command, music has stopped.  I have attempted to wipe the cache, reboot and nothing, still getting all the messages with the black screen.  I removed the battery for well over 10 seconds and still same thing.  What do i do?

Solution: It looks like something went wrong during the update process. Try starting the phone in recovery mode then do a factory reset from here. Take note that this will delete your phone data so make sure to have a backup copy first.

Note 4 Can’t Upgrade to Marshmallow

Problem: Hi I have the Note 4 SM-N910A android version 5.1.1 and Build LMY47X.N910AUCS2D016. The phone is AT&T and I bring to Metropcs is unlock phone. I was unable to update to Marshmallow. I called Samsung and they ask me to bring to their Samsung Center. Even when I called them they told that they can upgrade to marshmallow no problem. Once I got on the store they told me is not available. Any help to upgrade this phone? Thank you

Solution: If you have access to an AT&T SIM then try inserting it in your phone then check for the update. You will need to do this since this is originally an AT&T phone and it will check for the update from the AT&T servers.

If you don’t have access to an AT&T SIM and the Samsung center is unable to update your phone then you should consider manually flashing the update to your device. Instructions on how to do this can be found at several of the popular Android forums online.

Note 4 “Downloading, do not switch off the device” Error

Problem: My device is lagging and most times, stopped functioning totally. I’d to take out the battery and switch on again many times. There were also times whereby my phone just reboot on its own but froze in between. The device showed a black screen with a green PAC MAN/ robot with the message, “Downloading, do not switch off the device” or something along the line. I am not sure if it’s the battery problem, I don’t think I have issue with the software as it didn’t give me the idea that’s the cause. I even factory reset the phone but to no avail.  I think it all started when I charged my phone overnight and left it underneath my blanket in an air conditioned room. I was sleeping with the music on using my earphones. When I woke up, my phone was really really hot and I immediately took out the charger and let the phone cool. Could this be the problem? But the problem didn’t start immediately for me. It only started the following night.  Please advise. My phone has been with me for 17 months, not even 2 years! No major problem before this. I have been using all Samsung phones for years and no problem except this.  Thank you very much.

Solution: If a factory reset doesn’t fix the issue then the phone software itself could be corrupt. Try flashing an updated software version to your phone. If the issue still remains even after flashing the software then this could be caused by problems with the phone hardware. I suggest you have your phone checked at a service center if this is the case.

Note 4 Keep On Freezing Restarting

Problem: Phone keeps freezing and restarting..I haven’t downloaded any new apps recently. Phone freezes and sometimes I miss calls because of it…I can hear ring but can’t click to answer because phone is frozen or stuck…it happens randomly. Turning screen on to even view the time freezes on a black screen. Opening apps takes almost a full minute to open and even then they run slow or stop and phone resets. I tried deleting cache by holding the 3 buttons and still didn’t work…before I factory reset what else can I do?

Related Problem: My phone randomly freezes and immediately restarts. This happens about 10 times a day. It does it when I’m using it and it does it when it’s sitting not being touched. Also, when using my texts or hangouts, i can type out a message but the send button will not work. I have to restart the phone to be able to send the message. Please help

Solution: Try checking if the issue occurs in Safe Mode. While your phone is in this mode only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run. If the issue does not occur in this mode then it is most likely caused by a third party app. Find out what app this is and uninstall it. If the issue occurs even in Safe Mode then you should consider doing a factory reset. Take note to have a backup of your phone data before doing this.
