Note 4 Black Screen Of Death

Problem: Hello, I hope you’re doing well. I’ve had my Samsung Galaxy Note 4 since January 2016. Lately, I’ve been noticing that keystrokes are lagging and that the phone will sometimes crash or freeze for no apparent reason. Yesterday, however, my phone got stuck on the “Black screen of death”, as they say. It does not respond at all (no LED light, no vibration, no “charging” symbol) when I plug it into a working wall outlet, or a computer. The computer, in fact, doesn’t even recognize the phone anymore. I’ve used different chargers as well. The phone also had plenty of battery power (upwards of 90%) when it crashed definitively. I’ve tried soft resets and booting the phone in safety and recovery modes, but the phone simply will not respond. It doesn’t move past the black screen. I’ve read online that this could have anything to do with the motherboard, to the operating system. I’m pretty sure the Android Version is currently “Marshmallow”…it started off KitKat in 2016 and I’ve always performed every available OS update since then. Honestly, is there any chance this could be a simple case of the battery needing replacement? Or, in your opinion, am I just better off getting a new phone?

Solution: It’s possible that the problem could just be caused by a battery that has gone bad. Since you already performed some of the recommended troubleshooting steps for this problem which doesn’t work then you will need to get a new battery then check if this is what’s causing the problem.

In case you still experience the same issue even after using the new battery then this might already be caused by an internal component that is failing to work, possibly the power IC. The best way to proceed in this case is to bring the phone to a service center and have it checked.

Note 4 Gear VR Startup Screen Appears When Phone Is Charged

Problem: Here’s an odd combination for you. I had to replace the battery a while ago, supposedly it was a new battery, but it never really charged properly. Sometimes the fast charging would work and sometimes it would say it was fast charger connected but still take hours to charge up. It seemed that after quiet hours it wouldn’t charge at all. Whether I was using it or not. More often than not I’d wake up and it would still be where it left off when I went to bed. If I turned it off and removed the battery, without the whole holding the power button down for 30 seconds thing, and then put the battery back in immediately, it would be a few percent higher on the battery level and start charging again. Annoying, but at least I knew what I had to do to get it where I needed it. But last night after I got home from work, all of a sudden it wouldn’t show that a charger was plugged into it. No matter what charged I used. An hour before that it was fine. Thinking the connection was loose I wiggled it around a very little bit and then it would vibrate like it was connecting but instead of the charging indicator coming on a new screen would pop up showing one of 2 things. Main one, almost every time I plug it in, is the Samsung gear vr setup welcome screen. I don’t have vr, I don’t have a vr device, I’ve never used vr. But since last night, everytime I plug a charger in, any charger, it tries to start the setup. Sometimes it will also pop up with a screen for flashlight battery optimization. After closing them out and jiggling a very little bit I can get the phone to stay charging again, however still extremely slow and without fast charge showing at all anymore. Please help. This is the weirdest thing, and extremely annoying since I need it to charge.

Solution: It appears that this problem is caused by some issue with the phone charging port. What you will want to do first in this case is to clean the charging port of the phone using a can of compressed air. Make sure that any dirt or debris stuck in this port is removed. Once this is done try charging the phone with a different charging cord and wall charger.

In case the issue still persists then proceed with the steps listed below.

  • Try getting another new battery to eliminate any battery related issues that could be causing the problem.
  • Backup your phone data then do a factory reset. Once the reset is complete do not install any apps in your phone yet. Instead, try to check if the issue still occurs.

Should the problem still persist at this point then you will need to bring your phone to  service center and have it checked.

Note 4 Charges Extremely Slow After Software Update

Problem: After the last update – about 2 weeks ago – My note 4 has not been charging with the fast charger.  I switched out the cords and then I bought a new fast charger.  Still charging extremely slow.  

Solution: You will need to try cleaning the charging port of your phone using a can of compressed air as dirt or debris stuck in this port could be preventing your phone to fast charge. In case the issue persists then try to check if the battery is causing this problem by getting a new one.

If the above steps fails to fix the problem then this is most likely caused by some form of old software data that got left behind during the update process. This old data is now causing a conflict with the new software version. What you will want to do right now is to backup your phone data then do a factory reset. Once the reset is complete your phone should fast charge. In case it doesn’t then you need to have this checked at a service center.

Note 4 Sound Not Working After Phone Got Wet

Problem: Hello I dropped my Samsung note 4 in the toilet yesterday but luckily it was not completely submerged, it landed facing up with the camera side half of the phone in the water, the water was very low so half the top half of the phone went into the water. I quickly pulled it out and took off the back cover and wiped it clean with a towel. The phone was still on and I kept it on whereas I’ve just put you meant to turn it off but I wanted to know if it’s still functioning. It was glitchy but I had to go out so could not put it into rice though I had a big bag full of it. I had to drive so got my mum to put it on the dashboard of my car as it was very sunny the dashboard was very hot and I needed a way to dry it and that was one method I had at the time. I got home after drying it that way for about half an hour but then when I got home, the touch sensor on the screen stopped working. It was working when it happened but was glitchy, it only worked with the touch screen pen. So then I put it in rice for another 3 hours and hey my phone started working again! nothing lost, but the problem is it wouldn’t charge but only did so with the car charger so got it fully charged that way. But now since after putting it in rice it is charging on a normal socket. Now my question is I’ve got all sounds working on the phone apart from when you turn phone off and switch back on there is no sound, when you charge it there is no initial charging sound that it is charging, but it does charge, just no sound when u plug it in, when you swipe the screen when you want to use it, that swiping sound has gone, when you take a screenshot there is no sound,and finally there is no camera shutter sound. Everything else in sound wise works, can you please tell me what has happened here and how to get these sounds back? This is the only problem I’ve encountered after the accident.

Solution: There are two possible reasons why this issue is happening. First, some internal component got wet and is not not functioning properly causing this problem. The second reason is that some glitch in the phone software is causing this problem. While it’s going to be difficult to troubleshoot the first issue the second one we can work on. What you will want to do is to backup your phone data then do a factory reset. Once the reset is done check if the issue still occurs. If it doesn’t then it could be caused by some software glitch or by an app you installed. In case the problem still occurs after a reset then you will need to bring the phone to a service center and have it checked as this is most likely caused by a faulty component.

Note 4 Screen Randomly Goes Blank

Problem: My phone’s screen/display randomly just goes blank even when it’s fully charged or when battery is more than 50%. At first I thought that my phone was shutting down randomly but I can’t even turn it back on it when it happens. I have to wait until the phone is connected back to a charger for it to turn back on. Otherwise, it won’t turn on.

Solution: The first thing that you should do in this particular case is to check if the issue occurs when the phone is connected to its charger. If it doesn’t then the battery of your phone might already be faulty in which case you will have to get a new battery. If the problem still occurs even when the charger is connected then proceed with a factory reset. This will allow you to check if a software glitch is causing the problem. Make sure to backup your phone data before doing the reset.

If the above steps fails to fix the problem then the phone might have a faulty power IC. I recommend that you have this checked at a service center.

Note 4 Black Screen Of Death

Problem: My galaxy note 4 is in black screen of death but it flashes blue LED light and vibrates when I press onto the power button. I tried everything, even pressing the volume button and power Together but it only gave me a same vibration as it did for other times. Please help.

Solution: The black screen of death is an issue that can occur on any smartphone model that can either be caused by a hardware or firmware problem. Since there are various factors that can cause this particular problem we will narrow the troubleshooting to address the most common factors.

The first thing that you will need to do in this particular case is to do a battery pull. Remove the battery and microSD card of your phone then press the power button for at least a minute. Once this is done reinsert just the battery then turn on your phone.

If the issue remains then the next step is to make sure that the battery has sufficient charge.

  • Clean the charging port of your phone using a can of compressed air making sure that any dirt or debris stuck in this port is removed.
  • Charge your phone. If there is no charging indicator then try using a different charging cord and wall charger.
  • You should also check if the phone charges from a computer USB port.
  • Check if the phone turns on when the charger is connected. If it does then the problem could be caused by a faulty battery.
  • Try using a new battery.

One other troubleshooting that you can do is to check if a software glitch is causing this problem. Start your phone in recovery mode and if the phone can start in this mode you should consider doing a factory reset from here. Take note that the reset will erase your phone data.

Should the above steps fail to fix the problem then it’s possible that this can be caused by some faulty hardware component. You will then need to bring the phone to a service center and have it checked.

Note 4 Restarts Then Gets Stuck In Samsung Logo After Software Update

Problem: 3 hours after updating my phones software (Samsung note 4) my phone started turning off and on but would only start up to the logo then shut off my phone will only start up all the way and for me to be able to use It if it’s plugged to a power source..but sometimes will also shut off..battery is at 100% not sure what to do

Solution: Since this problem started after a software update we will first be concentrating our troubleshooting on the phone software.

  • Check if the phone starts in Safe Mode. If the phone starts in this mode then the problem could be caused by one of the apps you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.
  • Does your phone have a microSD card installed? If it does then this could be causing the problem especially if the card has some corrupt sectors. Remove the card then check if the issue still occurs.
  • Wipe the cache partition of your phone from the recovery mode.
  • Connect the phone to a charger and if it turns on you should backup your phone data then do a factory reset.
  • You should also try replacing the battery with a new one to eliminate any battery related problems.

If the above steps fails to fix the problem then you should bring your phone to a service center and have it checked as this could already be caused by a faulty hardware component.

Note 4 Not Turning On After Getting Wet

Problem: Dropped phone in water it was powered on. Immediately removed battery. Only option to dry was to use blow dryer set on cool for an hour then next day attempted power on blue indicator light came on then began to fade now it is dead.

Solution: There are two things that you can do when this particular phone model gets wet and does not turn on. First, make sure that the phone is dry. To do this remove the back cover, battery, and SIM card then place the phone in a bag of rice for at least 48 hours. The rice will absorb the moisture inside the phone. Once this is done check if the phone turns on.

If the phone still does not turn on then the second thing that you need to do is to eliminate the battery as a possible cause to this problem by replacing it with a new one.

If the above steps fails to fix the problem then you should bring the phone to a service center and have it checked.

Note 4 Turns Off At 30% Battery Life

Problem: Hello. I have a Samsung Note 4. If the battery drains at 30%, the phone stop working. If i try to restart it don’t start until i plug it on charger. The phone run perfectly. The battery is draining normal until it reach 30% and stop. What i can do? I made already a factory reset. Thanks for support

Solution: What you should do right now is to replace the battery with a new one as this problem might already be caused by a faulty battery. If the issue remains even with a new battery installed and since you have already performed a factory reset then it’s possible that the problem is caused by a faulty internal component possibly the power IC. If this is the case then you should bring your phone to a service center and have it checked.

Note 4 Turns Off At 40% Battery Life

Problem: Hello! My Note 4 tends to shut off when it gets 40ish % battery life.  I’ve hardly been on it all day. I’ve made sure to close out all opened apps. I’ve turned off bluetooth and the location capability. What should I do?

Solution: What you will want to do first is to immediately check if some software glitch is causing the problem by doing a factory reset. Make sure to backup your phone data before doing the reset. Once the reset is complete do not install any apps in your phone yet. Try to check first if the issue still occurs. If it does then you need to replace the battery with a new one to eliminate the possibility of this problem being caused by a faulty battery.

If the above steps fails to fix the problem then you should bring your phone to a service center and have it checked.

Note 4 Keeps Switching Off And Restarting

Problem: My Samsung Galaxy Note 4 keeps switching off and restarting while I am in the middle of doing something. I have cleared the cache. It is also slow in responding. At times I get a message “Unfortunately Apps has stopped “.

Solution: Do you have a microSD card installed in your phone? If you do have one then try removing it as this could be causing the problem.

If your phone does not have a microSD card or if the issue still occurs even if the microSD card is removed then you should perform a factory reset. Make sure to backup your phone data before doing the reset.

If the above steps fails to fix the problem then before bringing the phone to a service center for checking try replacing the battery with a new one as this could also be caused by a faulty battery.

Note 4 MMC Read Failed Error

Problem: My samsung note 4 is causing issues. Sometimes it reports a message “could not do normal boot. Ddi mmc_read failed.” Sometimes it boots normally and gets hung. Had to remove battery and reboot the phone. Can you please help.

Solution: What you will want to do right now is to backup your phone data once your phone boots normally. As soon as you have backed up your phone data immediately do a factory reset. If the issue still occurs even after performing a reset then you should consider flashing your phone with its updated stock firmware file using Odin. You can download the firmware file from the Sammobile website which is also where you can get the instructions on how to flash your phone.

Note 4 Freezes And Shut Down Even After A Factory Reset

Problem: hi there. i have a problem with my note 4 it keeps freezing up and shutting down on its own i don’t know what the problem is but anything i can do i have taken the battery out and factory reset it anything else i can do to make it good again that would be help full i don’t want another phone i really like my note 4

Solution: Does your phone have a microSD card installed? If it does then try removing it. You should also check if the battery is causing the problem by replacing it with a new one.
