Kogan Launches New 5-Inch Agora Quad-core Smartphone For $189

Kogan might not be one of the top brands in the Android smartphone market but the company is becoming quite popular since it tries to deliver devices that cost cheap yet come with competitive hardware specs. The company’s successful release early last year of the dual-core Agora smartphone is now followed by a quad-core model.

The Agora 5-inch Quad-core smartphone is the latest device of Kogan that the company says comes with features found only in smartphones four times its price.

Ruslan Kogan, founder and CEO of Kogan, said that “Some big tech companies think they can launch a phone for the budget-conscious consumer and still price it at over £450. At Kogan, we know better. We think everyone should be able to afford a great smartphone that has all the main features that you want, without paying for features you don’t need. Thousands of customers said they want a phone that looks stylish, but is also powerful and feature-packed – and that’s exactly what the Kogan Agora Quad-core Smartphone delivers. The team at Kogan has been working hard to create not just the best value smartphone the UK, but the best in the world.”

The Agora 5-inch Quad-core smartphone sports a big IPS display making images and videos appear vibrant. Its use of a quad core processor combined with 1 GB RAM makes apps and games work smoothly while its dual-SIM feature allows users to separate business and personal accounts into one device.

$149 Contract-Free 5-Inch Kogan Agora Smartphone Now Available For Pre-Order

If you want a five-inch smartphone but currently have a tight budget, then perhaps the Kogan Agora 5.0 can be the solution for you. The smartphone will only set you back $149, a huge difference from many of the five-inchers aimed at the high end market segment. For instance the unlocked Samsung Galaxy Note 2 retails for $700 and the LG Optimus Vu 2 is more expensive at $860. The Kogan Agora 5.0 it will be offered on contract-free, pay-as-you-go plans from both AT&T and T-Mobile. The device is now available for pre-order, and should start shipping on Valentine’s Day.

Consumers get a screen with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels, with a pixel density of only  186 pixels per inch. This resolution is naturally much lower than the ones on the Galaxy Note 2, which is 1,280×720 pixels, and the Optimus Vu 2, which comes with 1,280×768 pixels. Users, of course, should not expect the Kogan Agora 5.0’s low price to offer premium specifications. Inside, the handset is driven by a dual-core Cortex-A9 processor running at 1GHz, which works alongside only a meager 512MB of RAM and 4GB of storage capacity. Fortunately, expansion is possible, with the help of a built-in microSD card slot for those who need extra space for files. Adding to the list of specifications is Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, a VGA camera on its front, and a 5-megapixel camera on its rear. The available connectivity options are  802.11n WiFi and HSPA. 4G LTE, however, is not supported.

Engadget, which got to handle the device recently, says that the Kogan Agora 5.0 is not such a bad handset especially for its price, despite the phone’s  low specifications. According to their review, “the build quality is solid” and the display is “not notably terrible.” They also reportedly like some elements of the design, including its back panel, metal logo, and glossy rim.
