How to fix a Galaxy S9 that randomly reboots after installing an update

There has been a surge in #GalaxyS9 troubles recently so here’s another troubleshooting article. Like in previous posts, cases mentioned below are taken from users who contacted us directly. We hope you’ll find this post helpful for you.

Problem #1: How to network unlock a Galaxy S9 Plus

Hi. I ordered my Unlocked Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus from Samsung.com on April this year. Everything is fine, but I’m not able to make or receive a call since I bought until now. I switched 3 Carriers, brought my phone to Samsung care store to check it out, spending time with all my Carriers to get help with my issue. But my phone still gets the same issue. I just learned from Samsung technical support my phone was locked by US Cellular. I called Samsung, US Cellular and my current carrier T-mobile to unlock it, none of them want to do it. I saw on You tube showed how to unlock phone by paying UnlockRiver.com, so they can give the unlock numbers to unlock my phone. My question is, if I unlock my phone by the way on YouTube, can my phone able to call or receive a phone call? Thanks.

Solution: Carrier-branded devices like the one you have is originally built to work for a particular carrier.  Unlocking your phone does not right away means your phone will be able to use messaging and other network services of the current network you’re in. There are other factors to consider in order to make your device work with another network.

A network unlock code works by modifying some settings on your phone so its default network configuration are changed. This may or may not work. In general, a carrier will only unlock their device once all your obligations to them have been fulfilled. If you have outstanding balance with a carrier, they will demand that you settle it first before they can unlock your phone.

Even if you’ve already fulfilled all obligations and the phone has been network unlocked already, there are other reasons why your phone may not work when used in another network. There’s the factor of hardware incompatibility at play. Not all carriers operate in the same band frequency so phones built for them by Samsung also has specific radios. If the radio in your phone is not compatible with the current frequency of your carrier, your phone won’t be able to work even if it’s been network unlocked successfully. Try to do some research by knowing your device’s radio frequencies and comparing them to the frequency bands of your carrier in your area.

Normally, only carriers are allowed to unlock their devices but there are many third party shops both online and offline that can do the job. Be sure to dig deeper into the company that you want to get help from to see if they offer reputable service. Some of them can’t do anything if you have a CDMA device so don’t waste your money asking for unlock codes from these firms.

If you have a GSM device, unlocking is relatively easy and will most likely allow you to use your current carrier’s network services. Before you pay for an unlock code, be sure to contact your network operator to ask if your phone is compatible. Remember, getting an unlock code will not magically remove restrictions on your phone or make it compatible. Working closely with your carrier is necessary so you get accurate, first hand information.

Problem #2: How to fix a Galaxy S9 that randomly reboots after installing an update

I just got a Samsung s9 and when I connected to wifi it updated the software. Now it’s turning off and on and when i try to do a hard reset it gives me this message “security error: this phone has been flashed with unauthorized software & is locked. Call your mobile operator for additional support. Please note that repair/ return for this issue may have additional cost. ” the phone was bnib this afternoon, is there anything I can do?

Solution: Is this a brandnew Galaxy S9? If it is, don’t waste your time by fixing the issue on your own. We suggest that you demand for a replacement to save you from hassles.

If the device is pre-owned or previously used, we can’t think of a reason why an OTA (over-the-air) update will lead to this situation. We assume of course that you update the device normally and not via Odin. If the error occured after an OTA update from your carrier, make sure to contact them so they can create a ticket about the issue.

In some rare cases, normal updates may lead to boot loop or random shut downs. If you did not tamper with the software in any way and the only different thing done was to install an OTA update, factory reset may help. Try booting the device to Recovery Mode and factory reset it. Here’s how:

  1. Turn off the device. This is important. If you can’t turn it off, you’ll never be able to boot to Recovery Mode. If you are not able to shut the device off regularly via the Power button, wait until the phone’s battery is drained. Then, charge the phone for 30 minutes before booting to Recovery Mode.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  4. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  5. Press Power button to select.
  6. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  7. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  8. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.

If factory reset will help, work with your mobile operator to figure out what went wrong with their new firmware update.

Problem #3: Galaxy S9 can’t make a call or call keeps dropping

I have recently purchased a dual sim from Kogan Australia and moved from Virgin mobile (which no longer operates in Australia) to optus (Virgin used the optus network so I thought there would be no issues). I previously had a samsung s7, great phone. I am in a capital city however now when I am in my car either through bluetooth or when the car is stopped I cannot make a call or it drops out, hangs like its trying to connect and over 5  km, will ring and then nothing or doesn’t connect at all. It’ the same when I receive a call I go to answer and it just hangs and doesn’t connect. Also I use the Waze app (Navigation) which also worked great on the Samsung S7, it keeps dropping out in the location etc. I have called Samsung 3 times and Optus twice, they say see the supplier Kogan?

Solution: The reason why Samsung or your carrier refers you to the retailer is to get a replacement, which is a more efficient option to resolve the issue than do some basic, unguaranteed troubleshooting. There’s no direct way to know why your S9 works this way so Samsung or your carrier wants to save your time and effort by getting the device replaced right away. Before you do that though, we suggest that you try two simple troubleshooting — reset network settings and factory reset.

How to reset your S9 network settings:

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  2. Tap General Management > Reset settings.
  3. Tap Reset network settings.
  4. If you have set up a PIN, enter it.
  5. Tap Reset settings. Once complete a confirmation window will appear.

How to factory reset your Galaxy S9

Refer to the steps above.

If both troubleshooting steps won’t make any difference, go ahead and get the phone replaced.

Problem #4: Galaxy S9 won’t detect SD card

My Galaxy S9 suddenly will not recognize my SD card at all. It did this once a few months ago when it got too hot and all I did was turn off the phone to cool it down for about an hour then turned it back on and my card was again recognized. This time out of the blue it happened when my phone had not been used in a few hours and was recently charged. It is in a case so I am pretty sure no dirt got in where the card is located. Please help! Not sure of Android version.

Solution: There are two general reasons for this problem — either it’s an issue with your SD card, or there’s a bug in your phone. To know which one is easy. Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Reformat your SD card using your S9,
  2. Restart your S9 and check for the problem.
  3. If everything works normally, then you’re probably good to go.
  4. If your S9 can’t read the SD card after it’s been reformatted, get another SD card. This will help you tell if the issue is phone-related or not.
  5. If your S9 detects the second SD card and can use it normally, then the first SD card must be defective. Otherwise, you should have a phone issue.
  6. If you think it’s a phone issue, do a factory reset and see what happens. Factory reset should clear the software of bugs.

How to fix Galaxy S9 text messaging issue: only receives messages after getting “failed to send” error

In today’s episode, we bring you some text messaging and calling issues that were reported to us for the past few days. If you have trouble with your own S9 when it comes to text messaging or calling, this post might help.

Problem #1: How to fix Galaxy S9 text messaging issue: only receives messages after getting “failed to send” error

Hi. I’ve been having an issue with my Samsung S9. A lot of the times, I send out a message only to have a failed to send message pop up instead. I know for a fact that the recipients of these failed messages never get the texts whenever this happens. On the other hand, there are also many occurrences where I fail to receive messages from other people until much later. Then I realized that I don’t receive the message unless I send out a text that fails to send out almost every time. In other words, texts from other people arrive only after getting that failed message notice. Once I get that failed to send message, messages from other people pop up almost instantly. It’s happening more and more often, almost 20-30 times a day. If I don’t constantly send out messages to see if my texts are actually sending, I never know if I’m not getting texts on time or not, because I have had times where I receive someone’s message hours later when they actually replied 2 minutes after my last text. I’ve tried rebooting my phone and clearing the cache and data on the app, but nothing works. I’m not sure if it’s my phone or my carrier that’s the issue, but if there’s a solution to this problem, I’d really appreciate any help at all. Thanks!

Solution: For this type of issue, the most likely reason lies on the network side. We still recommend that you do three things before you start working with your network operator on this one.

Reset network settings

This is going to be the first troubleshooting step that you want to do. Clearing a device’s network settings sometimes help in fixing all sorts of networking ills. To reset your S9’s network settings, follow these steps:

 

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap General management.
  3. Tap Reset.
  4. Tap Reset Network settings.
  5. Tap RESET SETTINGS button to confirm.
  6. Restart your S9 and check for the problem.

Observe in safe mode

There may be a third party app that interferes with the operating system or with the text messaging function on your device. To see if that’s the case, you want to boot the device to safe mode. Once the device has been booted to safe mode, observe it for at least a day or two (without restarting to regular mode) and see if the problem occurs.

When your S9 is on safe mode, all third party apps will be suspended. If text messages work as expected and won’t become problematic, there must be a third party app behind the trouble.

To restart your phone to safe mode:

  1. Turn the device off.
  2. Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen.
  3. When “SAMSUNG” appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  4. Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  5. Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  6. Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  7. Release the Volume down key when you see Safe Mode.
  8. Observe the phone for a day.

Remember, you want to know if text messaging works properly or not in this mode. If there’s no problem at all, it means that one of the added apps must be causing it. Use the process of elimination to determine which of the apps is problematic. Here’s what you need to do exactly:

  1. Boot to safe mode.
  2. Check for the problem.
  3. Once you’ve confirmed that a third party app is to blame, you can start uninstalling apps individually. We suggest that you begin with the most recent ones you added.
  4. After you uninstall an app, restart the phone to normal mode and check for the problem.
  5. If your S9 is still problematic, repeat steps 1-4.

Factory reset

In the event that nothing changes when the device is on safe mode, you should consider wiping the phone and returning all software information to their defaults. At times, issues can persist after doing the basic troubleshooting stuff simply because the problem is with the operating system itself. If you’re lucky and the bug is a temporary coding issue with Android OS, factory reset may help in fixing it. Here are the steps that you need to do to fix it:

  1. Create a backup of your data.
  2. Turn off the device.
  3. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  4. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.

Get help from your carrier

As mentioned above, you may have to ultimately need to talk to your network operator about this issue. The three suggestions above are meant to address possible device issues only. If the concerns remain after doing them, it means that the reason for them are not fixable on your level. In this case, it’s best if you continue troubleshooting with help from someone who has access to your account logs and details. There may be some issues with the services in your area lately so it’s good if you can get firsthand information from your carrier.

Problem #2: Galaxy S9 text messages showing incorrect date and time

Some Messenger Timestamps to posts are incorrect and repetitive but only with certain contacts. I thought it may be an At&t network problem and I called them but they said it was Samsung S9 product issue which I’ve already called to address. Some resolve was achieved regarding the present time and zone in phone settings which was also wrong but did not change the timestamps on the text posts. Example: in one group of texts, it registered 6:19am and the same time in subsequent texts and continues the same time owr text. I expect restoration to dysfunction please. Thank you!

Solution: First of all, timestamps in text messaging apps are based on the device’s system time and date. If your S9 has incorrect date and time during the time when it receives new messages, posts will reflect whatever date and time your phone uses.

Secondly, post timestamps are not changed to correct ones after correcting your phone’s date and time. So, you can’t expect posts to reflect the newly changed date and time if they were received prior to changing the system date and time.

Thirdly, if you’re concerned about not having correct date and time on your messages, then make sure that your S9 is set to use the correct date and time in the first place. This is the main issue. If you can’t keep the correct date and time on your device for some reason, then you have to accept whatever inconsistencies your messaging app shows as regards the date and time reflected.

Problem #3: How to fix Galaxy S9 calling issues: won’t receive or send phone calls

I have at&t service, on 08/17/2018. My cell phone won’t receive or send phone calls. I can access Internet games facebook and other things, including text messages. But no calls. I have pulled the sim and SD card, blew out compartments, replaced everything again making sure all is in complete and secure. Closed it up and restarted, still I get everything else but no phone. I keep getting a pop up saying network or SIM card error. I am at a loss as my phone is the home, cell, and emergency phone. We do have my husbands phone, daughters phone and my son has an Ipad. Please help me asap! 

Solution: We suggest that you do a factory reset to know if the problem is due to a software bug and temporary. If you’ve already did that, or if nothing positive happens after doing it, consider having getting help from your network operator. There’s a chance that your account may not be properly provisioned, or there’s an on-going network problems you’re not aware of. They are the best people who can help you in this situation so don’t waste your time looking for other solutions if factory reset won’t help.

Problem #4: Galaxy S9 Plus won’t display long text messages

Hi there. I just recently upgraded to a Samsung S9 Plus. It is brand new phone, and now when i receive text messages in the default messaging app, if they are very long, they do not fully display as one text bubble. Rather, they show the first part of the message, with a button on the bottom to “view all”. Clicking on that allows you to read the full message. My.old phone was a samsung s5, and i never needed to change any settings, etc, to receive large messages as one bubble. Do you have any tips or suggestions? Thanks!

Solution: This may be a carrier-specific feature. Some carriers may modify default Samsung apps or add their own text messaging app in an effort to promote their brand. If your Galaxy S9 Plus came from your carrier as part of your subscription, or if you got this phone as a carrier-branded one, you can either just accept how the text messaging app works, or replace it with another app. If you want to consider using another text messaging app, we suggest that you start by using Google’s own Android Messages.
