Top 3 Android Smartphones (May 2013)

The recent launch of high end smartphones running on Android OS by Samsung and HTC was a clear sign that the fight for the top spot of high performance fully-featured smartphones has entered a new phase.  If you are considering switching to Android or already have an Android device but wish to have a new phone, the best in the market or somewhere on top 3, you have quite a number of options to choose from.  So here we go, these are the best 5 Android smartphones currently in the market.

3. Sony Xperia Z

Xperia Z

This is a loveable phone.  It brings everything that Sony has to offer in a compact phone including Sony’s popular Walkman and PlayStation.  It is also a durable dust and water proof phone and Sony promises that its battery can provide up to 550 hours of standby time in ideal conditions on a single charge.  The phone also packs quite some impressive specs under its ‘omniBalance’ design metal-tough build.  This is a perfect BYOD and personal gaming or entertainment smartphone especially or users who want a device that can stand a lot of abuse.

2. HTC One

HTC launched HTC One in March and has been on top of the list of the high performance smartphones since.  The Taiwanese manufacturer made this fantastically designed handset with an aluminum case and packing a 2.0 μm 4 megapixels rear camera but with a catch: the camera uses ultrapixels technology which makes it take far much superior photos than most smartphone cameras with higher number of pixels.  The major downsides of the One is that it has no microSD card slot for memory expansion and the battery is not removable, typical of HTC devices.

Processor: 1.7GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 Processor

Operating System: Android 4.2 Jelly Bean with HTC Sense 5 UI

Display: 4.7 inch 1080 x 1920 pixels Super LCD3 capacitive touchscreen (~469 ppi pixel density)

Memory: 2GB RAM; Choice of 32 and 64 GB, no Memory card slot

Cameras: 4 megapixels rear (ultrapixels), 2.1 front

1. Samsung Galaxy S4

Samsung Galaxy S4 White - Copy

This is an amazing follow up to the hugely successful galaxy S3.  It comes with some of the most impressive features including an octa-core processor for the international version, gesture control of the device, remote control and tons of sensors.  The S4 is better than HTC’s One in almost every way, save for the cheaper plastic build.  All these amazing features however come with a cost as users now discover that the 16GB version of the S4 actually has slightly over 8GB available to the user and there are reports of the S4 having heating issues.  If you are going to get the S4, it would be best to go for 32 or 64GB version.

Processor: 1.9GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 or 1.6GHz octa-core Exynos 5 processor

Operating System: Jelly Bean (Android 4.2.2) with TouchWiz UI

Display: 5-inch 1080 x 1920 pixels Super AMOLED high-pixel-density (441PPI) display

Memory: 2GB RAM; Choice of 16, 32 and 64 GB onboard memory with MicroSD card slot

Cameras: 13 megapixels rear, 2 megapixels front
