How to fix Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus that won’t turn on (easy steps)

After years of providing free support to our readers, we’ve already encountered thousands of issues and we’ve already known several effective solutions to almost every problem sent by our readers including a fix for a Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus that won’t turn on. This issue, while it may seem like a very complicated one, may actually be just a result of a rather minor problem in the firmware. Majority of the owners who encountered this problem said they were able to fix it without any help from a tech.

In this post, I will share with you a solution that worked to a lot of our readers who have phones that died without apparent reason. And our subject will be the Galaxy S8+ since we received several complaints from our readers about it. Solution for the Galaxy S8 Plus that won’t turn on

I am confident that the following solution will fix the problem but bear in mind that it only works for issues that occurred without apparent reason. If you’re the owner and you know right from the start the problem started after your phone suffered a drop or got submerged in water for a long time, then our solution may not work since the problem has already something to do with the hardware. However, if this issue started out of the blue and you don’t know exactly what happened to it, then you should try this…

  • Press and hold the Volume Down button and the Power key simultaneously for 10 seconds.

Assuming that there’s enough battery and the hardware is totally fine, your device should boot up normally. This procedure is what we call Forced Restart which refreshes your device’s memory and forces it to boot up, as the name suggests. If this doesn’t work however, then you should try this…

  1. Press and hold the Volume Down button and don’t let go of it.
  2. Press and hold the Power key while holding down the Volume Down.
  3. Keep both keys held for 10 seconds or until the screen turns on.

It’s basically the same as the procedure above but we’re just making sure you’re doing it right. Pressing and holding down the Power key first and then the Volume Down has a different effect as when you do it in reverse; you have to it the latter first before you trigger the phone to power up. But if this doesn’t work either, this is what you’re going to do next…

  1. Plug the charger to a working wall outlet.
  2. Connect your phone to it using the original cable.
  3. Regardless whether the phone shows the charging signs or not, let it charge for at least 10 minutes.
  4. Now do the Forced Restart procedure once again but this time while the phone is charging.

One of these procedures should work and bring your phone back to life provided there’s enough battery and there’s no damage to hardware components. There are a few things you can do about this problem but I hope you’ll take time troubleshooting your phone. If you are not comfortable doing the procedures below, then you should bring the phone to the service center immediately so that the tech can take check it for you. For those who are willing to do some troubleshooting, here’s what you should do:

Make sure there’s no physical / liquid damage

It’s imperative that you check your phone for both physical and liquid damage first because if the problem is due to one of those things, it’s futile to troubleshoot your device knowing the issue is with the hardware.

For physical damage, just look for scratches, dents and cracks on the outside. A force that can render the phone useless should leave a mark. If the phone is still flawless, then move on to the next step.

For liquid damage, check the USB or charger port first. Look into it to see if there’s a trace of liquid. You may use a cotton swab to clean around the area or insert a small piece of tissue paper into it to absorb the moisture.

Then, remove the SIM card tray and look into the SIM slot and look for the Liquid Damage Indicator; it’s a small sticker that would tell you if the phone has liquid damage or not. If the LDI is still white, then there’s no liquid damage but everything would be totally different if the LDI turned red or purple.

For cases of physical and/or liquid damage, you should bring the phone to the service center for the technician to evaluate how serious the problem is.

Try running the phone in Safe mode

After making sure there’s no physical or liquid damage in your phone, the next thing you should do is try to boot it up in Safe mode. By doing so, you’re temporarily disabling all third-party apps that may have a hand in this problem. Follow these steps and see what happens:

  1. Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen.
  2. When “SAMSUNG” appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  3. Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  4. Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  5. Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  6. Release the Volume down key when you see Safe Mode.

Assuming the phone boots up in this mode, then the problem is already fixed since we’ve already powered up the device. Try to reboot it in normal mode without doing anything in safe mode first. If it would still result to a black screen, boot back in safe mode and hunt down the apps that cause the problem and uninstall them one by one.

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  2. Tap Settings > Apps.
  3. Tap the desired application in the default list or tap 3 dots icon > Show system apps to display preinstalled apps.
  4. Tap the desired application.
  5. Tap Uninstall.
  6. Tap Uninstall again to confirm.

However, if the phone still refused to boot up in safe mode, then try the next method.

Attempt to boot the phone up in Recovery mode

The Android system recovery mode is the fail-safe of almost all Android devices. Even if your phone has some serious firmware issues for as long as the integrity of the hardware is intact, it should boot up in this environment. If you can make your phone to run in this mode successfully, there are a couple of things you can do that have great impact on the firmware. So try to go through the methods below and see what works:

How to run S8+ in Recovery mode and wipe cache partition

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  4. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight “wipe cache partition.”
  5. Press the Power key to select.
  6. Press the Volume down key to highlight “yes” and press the Power key to select.
  7. When the wipe cache partition is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
  8. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Run phone in Recovery mode and do the Master reset

This is your last resort but as long as the firmware hasn’t been modified in any way, you should be able to fix this problem by doing the reset. But the thing is you would lose all your files and personal data especially those that you saved in your phone’s internal storage. So it’s up to you if you proceed with this method but here’s how you do it:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  4. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight “wipe data / factory reset.
  5. Press Power button to select.
  6. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  7. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  8. When the master reset is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.

I hope that you’d be able to fix the problem with your phone using these methods. If the problem persists after doing all these, then you have to bring it to the tech to have it checked.

Unexpected shutdown and reboots in mobile devices can be attributed to a system issue, if not hardware damage. This can also occur among other symptoms of memory problems like when the device is running low on storage. New devices can also give into the same issue when certain apps are misbehaving or when a bad update caused major data corruption.

In worst cases, this can be a direct indication of hardware damage either physical or liquid damage. Before rushing to a service center, there are some workarounds you can try to fix the problem on your end and get your device back up and running. The following solutions I’ve demonstrate are particularly applied to an HTC U12/U12 smartphone that’s unexpectedly shutting down and refuses to power on. Read on for more detailed solutions.

First solution: Charge your phone.

The phone may have run out of power completely and so it suddenly shuts down as other phone does when the battery is emptied. To get it back up and running, it therefore needs to charge up. That said, connect your phone to its charger and then allow it to charge until it gets full.

If your phone doesn’t charge, check and ensure that you’re using the original/OEM charger and that the charger is working. You can also switch between power outlets to make sure the power source is working too. It may take longer for the phone to show charging indications especially if the battery was totally drained. Just wait until it accumulates enough power and then charge up to a hundred percent.

Second solution: Force restart while charging.

Forcing the phone to reboot while charging can also help clear any errant apps that might have caused the phone to shutdown unexpectedly. A force restart is a simulated battery removal procedure carried out on unresponsive devices. It forcibly quits running apps and dumps corrupted data and cache from the internal memory. In this case, force restart your HTC U12/U12 Plus while it’s connected to the charger.

  • To force restart your HTC U12/U12 Plus, press and hold the Power button for at least 10 seconds and then release when the phone reboots.

If the phone managed to boot up, then let it charge while it’s on. Otherwise, give it more time to charge until the battery is full and then that’s the time you can troubleshoot further.

Third solution: Wipe cache partition.

If you’ve managed to turn your phone back on, you can further troubleshoot to eliminate the possible triggers and prevent the device from acting up again. As the next possible solution, try wiping cache partition on your phone. This is highly recommended after installing a major system update on your device. Doing so will clear any temporary data that were corrupted from the update and eventually triggered the system to misbehave and become unstable. Here’s how to wipe cache partition your HTC U12/U12 Plus:

  1. With the phone powered off, press and hold the Volume Down button while turning the phone on.
  2. Continue to hold the Volume Down button until the bootloader screen is displayed.
  3. Press the Volume Down button until Recovery is selected.
  4. Press the Power button to confirm selection. The phone will then seem to reboot and the screen will turn black for 15 to 30 seconds.
  5. Wait until the recovery screen is displayed then continue with the next steps.
  6. Hold the Volume Up button and then press and release the Power button.
  7. Press the Volume Down button repeatedly until Wipe Cache Partition option is highlighted.
  8. Then press the Power button to confirm selection.
  9. Press the Volume Up button repeatedly after the process completes.
  10. Press the Power button to select Reboot system option.

Your phone will then execute its normal booting sequence.

Fourth solution: Reset your phone and restore factory defaults via Android recovery mode.

If the previous method failed, then try to enter recovery mode again and this time execute a master reset to wipe and restore factory settings and default configurations on your device. Here’s how:

  1. With the phone powered off, press and hold the Volume Down button while turning the phone on.
  2. Continue to hold the Volume Down button until the bootloader screen is displayed.
  3. Press the Volume Down button until Recovery is selected.
  4. Press the Power button to confirm selection. The phone will then seem to reboot and the screen will turn black for 15 to 30 seconds.
  5. Wait until the recovery screen is displayed then continue with the next steps.
  6. Hold the Volume Up button and then press and release the Power button.
  7. Press the Volume Down button repeatedly until Wipe Data/Factory Reset option is highlighted.
  8. Then press the Power button to confirm selection.
  9. Press the Volume Up button repeatedly after the process completes.
  10. Press the Power button to select Reboot system now option.

Allow your device to finish booting up and then see if the problem is fixed.

Fifth solution: Wipe and restore your HTC U12/U12 Plus in Android recovery mode.

Continue to troubleshoot your phone in recovery mode if the prior method failed. This time try performing a factory data reset and then wipe cache partition respectively. This should clear any system errors that might have caused the system to crash and shut down. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. With your device powered off, press and hold both the Volume Down and Power buttons simultaneously for a while.
  2. Release the Power button but keep holding the Volume Down button when the HTC logo appears.
  3. Release the Volume Down button when you see Download Mode.
  4. Then, press the Volume Down button to scroll down and select Reboot to Bootloader option.
  5. Press the Power button to confirm selection.
  6. Press the Volume button to highlight/select Boot to Recovery Mode.
  7. When the warning image shows up, press the Volume Up and the Power buttons once. The Android Recovery menu options will then show up.
  8. Press the Volume button to scroll to and highlight any further options and then the Power button to confirm selection.
  9. Press the Volume Down button repeatedly until Wipe Data/Factory Reset option is highlighted then press the Power button to confirm.
  10. Press the Volume Down button again to highlight Wipe Cache Partition, then press Power to confirm.
  11. To reboot your phone, select the option to Reboot system now and then press the Power button to confirm

Let your phone system reboot.

Other options

Service can be considered among the next option if none of the above methods is able to solve the problem and your HTC U12/U12 Plus repeatedly shuts down by itself and have trouble turning back on. The emerging symptom could also denote hardware damage on your the phone from a previous drop or exposure to liquid. In this case, physical repair would be necessary. There’s no doubt the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is one of the best smartphones out there but just like any other Android phones, it’s still prone to errors and issues. It means the phone can still reach the home screen before it powers down.

This is one variation of the boot loop problem but with this, there’s a big chance that the problem is with the hardware. Troubleshooting Note 8 that turns off after booting up

The course of this troubleshooting guide will be to determine if this is an issue with the hardware, then we’ll check if it’s due to physical and/or liquid damage. After which, we will have to resort to other procedures to see if this is a problem with the firmware or some of the apps and if we can fix it our own without any help from a tech. With all of that being said, here’s what I think you should do about this issue…

Try charging the phone and start it up while it’s connected to its charger

You don’t need to do this to charge your phone but rather to know if it still shuts down if it has a stable power source. The phone gets power from its battery but when it’s connected to its charger, it would also draw power from it so if the phone shuts down due to battery failure, then it shouldn’t do so when it’s connected to the charger.

Assuming your phone won’t turn off when it’s connected to its charger, the next thing you should do is continue using it while it’s plugged in and then try to check if it still shuts down on its own once you disconnect it from the charger. This is one way to know if it’s a hardware problem or not and if it does show it’s an issue with the hardware, then forget the other troubleshooting procedures and bring your phone to the service center.

However, if the phone is still shutting down by itself even if it’s connected to the charger, move on to the next step.

Check if the Power key is stuck

The most common signs of a stuck power key is when the phone turns on and before it can reach the home screen, turns off and then on again. The cycle never ends until the battery is depleted. However, it’s still possible that the cause of this kind of problem is a damaged or stuck power key so you still need to check it.

If you just put on a new case on your phone and then this problem started, then it must be the power key that’s messed up. One way to know if the power key is damaged is when it doesn’t snap anymore when you press it. For a stuck power key, the external button may appear normal but it’s a lot softer when you press it. If the key appears to be normal, then try the check step.

Check for signs of physical or liquid damage

Had your phone been dropped on a hard surface then you should see some marks; it could be in the form of scratches, dents or cracks. If your phone still looks flawless, then move on to checking for possible liquid damage.

Your Note 8 is IP68-certified which means that it’s water-resistant but that isn’t a guarantee it won’t suffer from liquid damage anymore as it’s still not waterproof. The first thing you need to check is the USB port. Just look into it to see if there’s moisture in there. To make sure it’s dry, clean the area with a cotton swab or insert a small piece of tissue paper to absorb the moist. Then, check the Liquid Damage Indicator (LDI) to see if it’s tripped. Remove the SIM card tray and look into the SIM card slot to find the small sticker that would tell you if there’s liquid damage or not. If the sticker is white, then it’s negative however, if it turned red, pink or purple, then it’s confirmed that it’s liquid damage. In this case, you have to bring the phone to the tech to have it checked. Don’t attempt to charge or turn your phone on again to prevent further damage.

Run the phone in safe mode to see if it still turns off

Assuming you’ve already checked your phone for physical and liquid damage and never found any trace of them, then you should try this step. It’s possible that there is an app or two that’s causing the problem. To isolate it, run the phone in safe mode to temporarily disable all third-party apps. This is how you do it:

  1. Turn the device off.
  2. Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen.
  3. When “SAMSUNG” appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  4. Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  5. Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  6. Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  7. Release the Volume down key when you see Safe Mode.

If the phone boots up successfully, continue using it to see if it would come to a point where it would shut off on its own. Assuming it continues to be working fine, then it’s confirmed the problem is caused by a third-party app. You need to find it and then uninstall it…

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  2. Tap Settings > Apps.
  3. Tap the desired application in the default list or tap 3 dots icon > Show system apps to display pre-installed apps.
  4. Tap the desired application.
  5. Tap Uninstall.

If the phone still shuts down at some point even in safe mode, then move on to the next step.

We are now at a point wherein we need to check if this is a problem with the firmware. Run your device in recovery mode and let it stay there for a minute or two or wait to see if it still shuts down even in that mode because if it does, there could be an issue with one of its components however, you still need to wipe the cache partition just to rule out the possibility that some corrupt system caches are doing this:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  4. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe cache partition’.
  5. Press Power button to select.
  6. Press the Volume down key until ‘yes’ is highlighted and press the Power button.
  7. When the wipe cache partition is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
  8. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Continue your observation after doing this procedure and if it still occurs, the next thing you should do is reset it.

Perform the Master Reset if possible

Assuming you’ve successfully started your phone up in recovery mode and wiped off the contents of the cache partition but the problem is still occurring, then you have to do this procedure. This will delete all your files and data so I know it’s difficult to make a backup of your important files but try as you won’t be able to retrieve them after the reset. After the backup, remove your Google account from your phone to disable the Factory Reset Protection and then follow these steps to do the Master reset:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  4. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight “wipe data / factory reset.
  5. Press Power button to select.

Bring the phone to Samsung service center

If the reset failed to fix the problem as well, then you should bring the device to the service center for the technician to do further tests on it. It might be an issue with the hardware and as far as basic troubleshooting is concerned, you’ve already done what have to do to fix this problem.

Problem #1: Galaxy S6 randomly crashes | Galaxy S6 won’t turn on

A few days ago my phone crashed and I had to reboot it, and it worked fine for a while until it started crashing again but on a more regular basis. I hadn’t installed any new updates or apps around the time, so there seems to be no obvious reason as to why this is happening. Usually my phone would turn right back on, so there was no issue. But now my phone goes onto the infamous black screen of death, and using the vol down+power button turns it back on, until it crashes an hour later. I’ve tried entering android recovery mode, and after the phone tries to install system update, it shows an image of the Android Guy ‘dead’ with and exclamation mark warning above its head. I suppose this means it hasn’t installed or there’s an issue with the firmware. After this I’m allowed to go back into android recovery mode where i’ve been able to reboot my phone and also wipe the cache partition, with no luck unfortunately. I’ve also tried Safe Mode, but it’s also crashed on Safe Mode, so I suppose the next option is to do a factory reset, but I’m trying to use it as an absolute last resort. I’d appreciate any help and advice, thank you. UPDATE: Whilst I was writing this, my phone crashed again, and this time I can’t get it off of the black screen/blue LED. — Sean

Solution: Hi Sean. When dealing with an issue like this, you must be open to the fact that hardware error may be the main reason too. A lot of Android problems don’t have obvious reasons and that’s why you have to all ALL available software troubleshooting first, which includes factory reset.  There’s no clear cut solution for every Android problem, much more for an issue you’re experiencing. Try to wipe the phone clean via factory reset and observe it for a day. Make sure that you don’t install anything during the observation period. Because factory reset will return all software settings to their known, working state, any software glitch that may be causing the problem should be eliminated. If your phone will continue to reboot randomly after a factory reset, the most likely cause is hardware malfunction.

The frequent crashes may be the result of an on-going overheating problem, which can also be due to a malfunctioning hardware component. Smartphones like the Galaxy S series can overheat quickly as motherboard design has poor ventilation. If one component is not working properly, it may produce abnormal heat levels inside that can fool the heat sensor, causing it to shut the system down. Most smartphones today are designed to shut down if it detects high temperature beyond its normal threshold. In this case, you must let the phone cool down for at least 2 hours before attempting to turn it back on. If the problem continue after you’ve left the phone powered off and unused, that’s another confirmation that you’re facing a hardware issue. To solve it, we suggest that you replace it. We discourage you against having an overheating phone repaired as often times it doesn’t provide a permanent solution. Most technicians, even those from Samsung, often only spends minutes checking a device. If the main cause of the problem cannot be identified, they may misdiagnose the issue and declare that there’s no problem in the unit.

If you can’t turn the phone back on at all at this point, even if you try booting it to other boot modes, that’s all the more reason to have it replaced. For reference, here are the steps on how to boot the phone to alternate boot modes:

Boot in Recovery mode:

  1. Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  4. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  6. You can either wipe the cache partition or do a factory reset when in this mode.

Boot in Download Mode:

  1. Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume DOWN keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume DOWN keys.
  4. Wait until the Download screen appears.
  5. If you can boot the phone in download mode but not in other modes, that means that your only way out may be to flash a stock or custom firmware.
  6. Use Google to look for a guide on how to do it.

Boot in safe mode:

  1. Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Press and hold the Power button.
  3. Once the ‘Samsung Galaxy S7’ logo appears, release the Power key and immediately press and hold the Volume Down button.
  4. Continue holding the button until the phone finishes rebooting.
  5. Once you see the text “Safe mode” at the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume Down button.
  6. The only difference of safe mode from normal mode is that the former prevents third party apps from running. If you can boot the phone in safe mode but not in normal mode, uninstall all apps until the issue (that prevents you from booting normally) is eliminated.

Problem #2: Galaxy S6 edge plus bought from Craigslist stuck in boot loop

Hello. I am contacting you out of complete frustration. I purchased an S6 edge plus (Verizon) from a guy on Craigslist (I know). upon purchasing the phone I was told it only needed a new battery. After charging the phone I realized the phone held a charge fine but when it got to the Samsung flash screen it would vibrate restart and do that over and over (bootloop). So I entered the recovery and have performed a factory reset and cache wipe endless times. While they show successful after reboot, same bootloop issue occurs. I am so frustrated because I paid $300.00 for the phone and cannot come up with any ideas at this point. I am in desperate need of help if possible. if I forgot to mention the phone does not bootloop in recovery or download mode and is running 6.0.1. Please please tell me what to do. I took it to a shop but they want to charge me $250.00 to fix it 🙁 —  Ari

Solution: Hi Ari. The only potential solution that you can try right now is flashing stock ROM to your phone. Hopefully, the cause of the problem only lies on the software, as software issues are relatively easier to fix than bad hardware (and we’re not even talking of a fix that you can do). Flashing is an Android term that means installing a ROM or operating system via download or Odin mode (steps provided above on how to boot to this mode). Most boot loop issues are fixed by this process so we are hoping that this will work in your case as well. Flashing requires modifying core files of your phone so you must make sure that you do it properly to avoid causing further problems. Keep in mind that flashing requires some things to be in place before it can be done such as the following:

  • USB debugging enabled (If the phone’s USB debugging feature was not enabled before the phone got stuck in a bootloop, there’s no way flashing will work)
  • recovery software is working
  • root (necessary for some ROM)

Flashing procedures vary in some critical steps depending on a device so you must remember these general points before attempting it:

 

  1. Know the phone model number. This is a critical information if you are trying to flash a device. Since you mentioned that it’s a Verizon device, it’s model number must be SM-G920V. If you aren’t sure, try to check back of the device to see if you can see the Verizon logo.
  2. Get the correct firmware. Using the right firmware when flashing cannot be overemphasized enough. Installing a wrong firmware can brick a normally working phone so we can’t say for sure what happens to your device if this is not followed. A popular site to get a good firmware from is Sammobile.com. Keep in mind that this is a third party site and they don’t guarantee that the copy of their firmware is a working one. Based on our experience though, their firmware are all fine.
  3. Use a good guide. We don’t provide flashing guides so you must use Google to search for one.

 

Remember, if flashing won’t resolve the boot loop problem, the cause of the problem is most probably bad hardware, or, as the previous owner said, bad battery. In this case, you have no choice but to have the hardware checked by a professional.

Problem #3: Galaxy S6 has multiple issues after updating Android Marshmallow

Problems began after the latest update (Marshmallow (version 6.0.1). The phone would constantly think you were plugging and unplugging the charger or headphones. The battery would show charged and then you could watch it drain and watch it charge back up without it being plugged in. Buttons would be pushed without you pushing them.

As the days went by and this new update was on my phone, it continued to crash. It eventually stopped charging. I did a factory reset and it began charging again. After a short period of time it stopped charging again and I did another factory reset. I did this two more times and did a complete factory reset from the black screen the guy pulled up at the AT&T store that wiped out everything. My phone began to charge normally for a short period of time, it didn’t matter if it was plugged in or laying on a wireless station as it is not the port. The new software has literally damaged the phones “brain” portion of knowing how to charge. I have to turn my phone off for it to charge. Even then it doesn’t register that it is charging, but it does. My battery drains quicker and I’m living not using my phone unless I have to know I will have to turn it off to charge it. This is the worst update ever… after being a Galaxy person since the very first phone I think I may convert to an Apple user this has been such an awful experience. A phone that can’t remember how to charge isn’t a phone at all!!

After calling Samsung I finally got them to admit they knew there was a problem but it didn’t offer me any answers as to when they would be releasing an update to fix it. I have cleaned my cache, rebooted, factory reset many times, tried safe mode, recovery mode… I’m out of ideas here. — Desperate

Solution: Hi Desperate. While some major system updates result to glitches due to complications that developers did not anticipate, there can also be problems that result from incompatible apps. The latter is the one that you should be concerned of as the first situation, coding issue due to developer’s fault, is beyond your ability to fix.

Keep in mind that updating the operating system does not automatically mean apps are updated as well. There’s a need to update apps when a new operating system version is installed to avoid bugs. While it sounds simple enough, many users are quick to blame new system updates as the cause of problems when it’s incompatibility that’s causing it in the first place. This is especially important if you don’t set Google Play Store to update apps automatically, or if you get apps from third party sources outside of Google Play Store. To know if an app (either first party or third party) is incompatible, do another round of factory reset and observe the phone for a couple of days without installing anything. If the same charging problem occurs even when there are no new installations, that’s an operating system problem that only later OS system patches can fix (this is very rare though). Such problem must be reported to the relevant party like your carrier or Samsung so they can then work with their developer team for a solution.

If the opposite happens though and your phone appears to charge normally and other issues don’t appear, make sure that you identify the problematic app and remove it.

Problem #4: Galaxy S6 edge keeps freezing and rebooting

Hi guys. I own a Samsung S6 Edge, SM-G925F. I bought it in March 2016 and have been using it smoothly until last November when out of nowhere it started freezing and rebooting. At first i thought it was because of some kind of application i installed so i uninstalled every app but that did not fix the problem. Below are the steps i already did but unfortunately, none of this fixed the issue:

  • soft reset
  • master reset
  • boot in safe mode
  • new firmware upgrade

After all the try I’m still having the same issue that i even stopped using the device. I am so disappointed with Samsung because i have been taking good care this phone still looks new but unable to operate. I used all preview Galaxy release S2, S3, S4, S5 and never experienced such bugs. I’m considering of never to use Samsung ever. Please advise me anything that can still be done in order to recover the phone. Thanks for reading it. — Abreu

Solution: Hi Abreu. As mentioned above, if all software troubleshooting have failed, the cause of the problem must be faulty hardware.  You should have the phone repaired or replaced.

Problem #5: Galaxy S6 screen not working properly after an accidental drop

My phone for some reason broke. I don’t know how. I understand that I dropped it and that is probably how it got broken. It didn’t have this huge crack across the screen. It only had small crack in the right corner. The phone slipped out from under my arm while I was walking down concrete stairs. From then on, the phone had glitches. Sometimes the screen flashes (in dim lighted screen) (usually green) the home screen and apps but not the whole thing. Sometimes it is green with the app/ home screen. Sometimes it is white, sometimes it’s just one of the colors, sometimes it is all. It also sometimes doesn’t show anything. It still makes clear sounds and shows the buttons on the bottom. What do I do. — Mary

Solution: Hi Mary. If the screen issue started after you dropped the device, shock must have damaged the screen permanently. Crack on the screen doesn’t matter. The best course of action that you can do now is to have the phone’s hardware be checked by a professional. There’s no software hack that you can do on your level to fix this type of issue.

Problem #6: Galaxy S6 NFC feature is greyed out

NFC greyed out in ON position. Will not turn off nor is actually turned on. Apps that use NFC are saying it needs to be turned on. Gone through all troubleshooting, i.e., soft resets to messing around with all data settings as found on your guide and other guides. In download mode / power + vol up + home button the system tries to upgrade before showing a dead android and yellow warning sign. It then proceeds to go into the download mode after a couple of seconds. Thanks for any help i can provide screen shots if needed. Note this is a refurbished device that was given to me by my Telco company. — Nathan

Solution: Hi Nathan. Try to do a factory reset first to see if your Telco company’s software intentionally locked this feature off or not. Make sure to create a back up of your files before doing this procedure. Here are the steps:

  1. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up, Home and Power keys together.
  3. When the device powers on and displays ‘Power on logo’, release all keys and the Android icon will appear on the screen.
  4. Wait until the Android Recovery Screen appears after about 30 seconds.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, highlight the option, ‘wipe data/factory reset’ and press the Power key to select it.
  6. Press the Volume Down button again until the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted and then press the Power key to select it.
  7. After the reset is complete, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key to restart the phone.

If the NFC option remains greyed out after a factory reset, the current software may be blocking it for some reason. Talk to your telco company on how to turn it back on.
