After the Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update for the Samsung Galaxy Note 5, we received a lot of complaints from our readers who are seeking assistance on how to fix problems that reportedly occur shortly after downloading the update. Many of them are text related like not being able to send or receive SMS and MMS. Some reported having to experience the Messages app freezing and hanging.
So, in this post, I will address some of those problems and if you’ve already contacted us regarding a similar issue, then try to skim through the problems below to see if you concern is one of them. We will be posting a follow up article on this so if your problem wasn’t included, don’t worry as we may answer it in the next article.

Q: “My text message and Facebook app won’t allow me to open it up. I try to power off/or and restart but it’s still doing the same thing. What should I do? Should I factory data reset it?”
A: The first thing I suggest you do is boot your phone in safe mode and try to open those apps while the device is in that state.
- Turn off your Galaxy S6.
- Press and hold the Power key.
- When ‘Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge’ appears, immediately release the Power key and then press and hold the Volume Down button.
- Continue holding the Volume Down button until the phone finishes the restart.
- When you see Safe Mode on the lower left corner of the screen, release the button.
I do expect the messaging (I assume you’re using the stock one) app to work without a problem in safe mode as it is a pre-installed application. However, if it doesn’t then we can say that it must be an issue with the firmware albeit minor. Don’t troubleshoot Facebook just yet as it’s expendable. What’s important is the messaging. If you can get it to work, other third-party apps you’re having issues with will also work.
If the messaging app won’t work in safe mode, the you should proceed your troubleshooting by deleting the system cache. This procedure is very effective especially if you just updated your phone to the recent firmware version.
- Turn off your Galaxy Note 5.
- Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, and Power key.
- When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
- When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
- Press the Volume Down key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
- Press the Power key to select.
- When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
- Press the Power key to restart the device.
Deleting the system cache may fix the problem, however, if the it remained after that, then you are left without a choice but to do the master reset, which will delete all your apps, files, pictures, music, etc. So, before you follow the steps below, make sure you back them up first:
- Turn off your Samsung Galaxy Note 5.
- Press and hold the Volume Up, Home and Power keys together.
- When the device powers on and displays ‘Power on logo’, release all keys and the Android icon will appear on the screen.
- Wait until the Android Recovery Screen appears after about 30 seconds.
- Using the Volume Down key, highlight the option, ‘wipe data/factory reset’ and press the Power key to select it.
- Press the Vol Down button again until the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted and then press the Power key to select it.
- After the reset is complete, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key to restart the phone.

Q: “I have just updated my Note 5 through regular update and now on Android 6.0.1. Before update, I use power saving mode every time and still get notifications of messages from messaging apps and also SMS and email. However, after update, I do not get notifications anymore from some of the apps including the email. Is this a feature of the new power saving mode? Is there any way to bypass this feature while keeping the power saving mode active? Also, is there any way to switch off the touch key light?”
A: Unlike the Ultra Power Saving Mode, you can still set your preferences with the Power Saving Mode including notifications for some apps. In your case though, I think the issue with the apps that don’t notify especially if other apps are doing just fine. Try to check the settings of the apps you’re having issues with.
As to the touch key light, yes, you can actually turn them off or set the amount of time they remain lit. In the Device section under Settings, go into the Display menu and then tap on Touch key light duration. You can set it to 1.5 seconds, 6 seconds, Always off and Always on. Choose your preference.
Q: “I access Facebook through the Google Chrome browser app on my Note 5. Today, I accessed my Facebook page, Account Settings, Security, Login Approvals On, entered password, Start Setup, “We’ll text a code to (xxx) xxx-xxxx to confirm it’s your number,” Continue. A narrow text message “banner” from Facebook showed quickly at the top of my Note 5, then disappeared; however, there was no message from Facebook in my text messages. I have not installed the Facebook or Facebook Message apps on my Note 5.”
A: If you’re suspecting that your phone may not be receiving text messages, then try to send a message to your own phone number. If it goes through and you can actually receive it, then there’s no issue with your phone. The problem may be on Facebook’s end. The system may take a little while to send texts for confirmation or you may need to do the same process just to receive one.
Just in case you can’t send/receive text messages and your phone is showing it’s detecting signal and that flight mode isn’t enabled, then you need to contact your service provider as it may be a network issue.
As to the Facebook issue, I’m afraid you really have to call Facebook for that. However, before you do so, I suggest you try logging into your account using the official FB app from the Play Store just to see if it does make a difference.
Q: “After the update, in the text screen keyboard, there is no longer a microphone to touch and speak my responses or otherwise.”
A: Press and hold the key next to the space bar on the left (where the microphone icon once was located) to enable voice typing. If the mic icon actually shows but reverts back to the other icon shortly after than, then you’re experiencing what other users have and it seems like a bug, which Samsung has to address. But I hope you don’t experience that.
Q: “I have a Verizon note 5 being used on att network and apn setting already done. Can’t send mms over a certain size. Any way to get that to work? Also if the marshmallow update is available for Verizon Note 5 will I be able to update this note 5 even if being used on att or will it need to be an att update?”
A: Carriers have their limit sizes for MMS to avoid network congestion. You should contact ATT to inquire about it. While there are a lot of info online that suggests how much data you can actually send of its network, it’s best that they’ll be the one to inform you about it.
Now, about your phone, which a Verizon variant, it should be updated with the firmware that’s for Verizon Note 5. Inserting a different SIM card doesn’t change the fact that it’s a Verizon variant Note 5.
To avoid confusion, try using the Smart Switch application on a computer to help you with the update.
Q: “Can’t block text messages from a specific number. Followed instructions on every site including this one to no avail. Click on more, then settings, then there is no option to block messages or enable spam. I went through every option.”
A: Then such feature is not available in your phone and it’s your provider’s prerogative to include it or not. But the thing is, for features that were taken away, the provider might offer it together with its plan for a few dollars. Therefore, you need to call your provider and ask whether such feature doesn’t really exist on your device.
Q: “When trying to send texts it just loads and loads like its sending never does. Have restarted the phone, took to sprint and it continues to do so. Calls that come in are not coming through. Finally receiving voicemails that were left a month ago…there is definitely an issue with the phone itself. I am paying for service that hardly ever works. Please help. I will be going back to sprint.”
A: You should verify with Sprint if you’re in an area with good coverage or service because that might be the problem. If your provider says you are, then it must be the phone. There are units that are defective out of the box and there are those that may last for a few months only. Which the case, your provider should be able to provide with a solution or offer something that both parties could agree with.
Q: “Hi, my name is Karren and this may be a really silly question, but I am having trouble setting up my group message texting. When I am texting in a group everyone’s texts show up on a single feed. Mine are all sent to the individual group members and don’t show up on the group feed? I have tried to change the MMS setting to send in a single thread, but I am still having the same problem. Can you please help? Thank you, Karren.”
A: Hey Karren. No, it’s not a silly question. There is a setting in Messages app that allows you to toggle between group texts and multiple recipient and it’s called Group conversations. Just head to Settings > Applications > Messages > More settings > Multimedia messages. Now, enable Group conversations so you can join group texting. That’s all there is to it.
Q: “Want to send a snippet of music or recording to attach to message. It goes MMS on very short snippets, unless a data rich piece. A 1200 kb message comes, then reverts message back to text.”
A: It’s because whenever you attach any file to your text message, your phone is set by default to convert it to MMS no matter how small the file is. I’m not really sure what the problem is but if ever you can’t send an MMS, then try to check mobile data as it is required to transmit such messages.
Q: “I type a text message to a person with whom I have no conversation history, and when I send it, it appears on a conversation with a completely different, random person each time. Both people end up getting my messages as though it were a group message. Has happened multiple times when trying to send to different people.”
A: Try to go to Settings > Applications > Messages > More settings > Multimedia messages and see if the Group conversations option is enabled. If so, try disabling it and send a message to two different contacts on your phone and see if they receive it separately and not as a group message.
On the other hand, if the messages app attaches a random contact whenever you send a text, then it must be a glitch or a bug in the app or firmware. Try to clear the cache and data of the Messages and if that won’t work, you really have to do the master reset.
- From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
- Find and tap Settings.
- Under the ‘APPLICATIONS’ section, find and touch Application manager.
- Swipe to the left or to the right to display the appropriate screen but to display all apps, choose the ‘ALL’ screen.
- Find and tap Messages.
- Tap Clear Cache.
- Tap Clear Data, then OK.
