[Rumor] Google Playground To Be Announced May 15, Set To Rival Apple’s GameCenter

Last month several files were leaked courtesy of the MyGlass app of Google Glasses that point to a new service from Google. The files had names that hint of a new upcoming game service from the company. Several of the terms mentioned on these files were leaderboards, gaming lobbies, messaging services, achievements, and invitations which basically make up an online gaming service.

As a follow-up to this there’s new information that’s spreading on the Internet that Google may be introducing a new service called Google Playground this coming May 15 during the Google I/O event. There’s even an invite with the tag line “Let’s Play together” spreading although we’re still skeptical about its validity.

Google Playground is reportedly going to be announced at 9 AM on the said date at the Exhibit Hall West, Moscone Center. Several analysts say that the invite is probably a fake for several reasons. One, if Google really planned to introduce this new service then they should already have made the announcement themselves. There is no proof that the invite comes from Google’s PR Team. Secondly, the image has poor resolution which means it’s probably a fake.

Anyway if Google Playground was really to be launched then it will be a direct competitor to Apple’s GameCenter. What Android needs right now is a service that lets gamers interact with each other easily. The Playground is a great idea since it will enhance the gaming experience of a person aside from making gaming developers happy.

We’ll just have to wait for the Google I/O event and see what the company is going to present.

Google I/O is a company event that will happen this May 15 to May 17 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. This is a developer event held annually that features highly technical sessions on various fields relating to web, mobile, and enterprise applications.

Some of the things that may be presented for Google I/O 2013 are as follows

  • New Nexus Q
  • Gaming Center
  • Android 4.3
  • Babel
  • New Gmail
  • Wearable Tech (Google Watch, Glass, etc.)
  • Chrome Dongle
  • Nexus 4 LTE and Nexus 7
