A new report is suggesting that Samsung’s oft rumored SIM based smartwatch, the Gear Solo, could break cover at next month’s IFA event in Berlin. It is said that the wearable could be paired with the Galaxy Note 4, much like last year when the Galaxy Gear and the Galaxy Note 3 were shown off simultaneously.
The key selling point of Gear Solo will reportedly be cellular connectivity allowing it to function independently rather than relying on another device. It was initially believed that the Gear Solo will be launched in South Korea through SK Telecom. But it seems like the company is looking to launch it on a global level as well.
At the moment, there’s no concrete evidence available to suggest that the Gear Solo will break cover at IFA next month. However, considering that it has made its way to leaks on innumerable occasions, we’re bound to believe it’s a legitimate device. Hopefully, we’ll know more about this unique smartwatch from Samsung in the coming weeks.

We have heard rumors about the Samsung Gear Solo, which was reported to be a standalone smartphone on your wrist, thus removing the reliance on a bulky smartphone. The Wall Street Journal now claims that this smartwatch is not too long away from launch with a Summer announcement being hinted at. This should mean the smartwatch will land in the markets by June or July.
Earlier reports have suggested that Samsung is having an exclusive deal with a couple of Korean carriers for this smartwatch, so it will be interesting to see if it will be sold elsewhere as well. The idea certainly sounds interesting, although it’s unlikely to be a hit considering that users are leaning towards devices with bigger displays these days and a smartwatch can only do so much with its display real estate.
So it’s going to be yet another niche product from Samsung, which will certainly be talked about for quite some time. Much like the company’s current crop of smartwatches, this upcoming smartwatch will also be running Tizen, according to the report.
Although it will be a unique product in the market, it certainly won’t be the first time we’ll see a device like this. The Omate TrueSmart is a wearable smartwatch with moderate popularity, so Samsung won’t be lauded for its ingenuity like it was with the Galaxy Note series back in 2011.
