How To Fix Samsung Galaxy S3 Problems, Errors and Glitches [Part 48]


Hi guys! It’s time for yet another episode of our Samsung Galaxy S3 troubleshooter series. It’s the 48th part and I addressed ten problems in this post. These issues aren’t so common but there’s still a chance you may experience them. Those who emailed us, find out if your issue is included in the short list below. If not, please bear with us as we literally receive hundreds of emails each day and Galaxy S3 is not just the device we are supporting.

Mobile Data Not Working After Panel Replacement

Problem: Hi, My S3 screen went completely black a month ago. I just got the front panel of my Galaxy S3 replaced but since then mobile data is not working. All the settings of mobile data including APN have been checked multiple times and the operator also says all data services are enabled.

Is it because, maybe, the repairing guy forgot to plug something into the new panel or any other hardware connection.

The Wifi is working fine. But, although mobile data is enabled + for roaming as well but no 3G/Edge/GPRS symbol is visible on the phone.

Please help urgently as if it is a hardware problem due to the negligence of the guy who fixed the new panel I should get in touch with him. Regards, Zohaib.

Suggestion: That’s a maybe. We really don’t know what happened and we don’t have proof that it was caused by tech’s “negligence.” But you know what, enable mobile data–regardless whether it displays the usual icon or not–and try sending a text message to your own number and attach a picture to it. This is just a test, okay? But if the picture message goes through, then mobile data is still functioning in your phone. However, if the message didn’t go through or you haven’t received it, then it’s time you performed factory reset and see if that makes a difference.

But do you know why I want you to perform troubleshooting?

It’s because installing a display panel is easy and aside from the panel’s flex cable, the other cable that needs to be detached is the antenna. If, however, the antenna wasn’t set connected back, then your phone must have difficulty finding cellular signal. In case the factory reset doesn’t make a difference, then it’s time you bring the phone back to the tech who installed the display panel.

Galaxy S3 Won’t Boot Up After An Update

Problem: Hello Droid Guy, I need your help!

My daughter had an update on her Galaxy S3 last night and now it will not turn on.   It gets stuck on the screen with the Samsung logo on it. I have turned it on and off, even took the battery out – but nothing worked. I realize not much can be done if the phone doesn’t turn on, but any suggestions are welcomed. Troubleshooting: Hi Claudia. You’re right, there’s nothing much we can do for a phone that won’t turn on but we’re lucky, your daughter’s phone will, it just won’t boot up completely. We’re even luckier because the problem was caused by an update, which is very easy to fix. Most of the time, update related problems can be fixed by booting the phone is recovery mode and wiping the cache partition.

However, if wiping the cache partition wouldn’t work, then I suggest you boot the S3 in safe mode, backup all important data and perform factory reset to give the phone a fresh start after an update.

System Functions, Pre-installed Apps Crash On Galaxy S3

Errors: Hello, I have lost hope to get my Samsung Galaxy S3 fixed again. Every 5 seconds it shows ”Process has stopped”, ”Clock has stopped”, ”Maps has stopped”. Every time when ”Process has stopped” pops up to my screen, I press OK and then mobile internet turns off. What to do? Best regards, Sander.

Solution: Sander, I don’t know what happened to the phone but it seems like it’s the Android system as well as pre-installed apps and core services are crashing. There’s nothing much left for you to do but factory reset. But I suggest, you boot in safe mode first and try to see if you can backup your important data. If you can’t due to these errors keep popping up, then you must proceed with factory reset via recovery mode.

Factory Reset

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, and Power key.
  3. When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
  4. When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
  5. Press the Volume down key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key to highlight ‘delete all user data.’
  8. Press Power button to select and start the master reset. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to turn the restart the device.

Galaxy S3 Has Difficulty Browsing

Problem: My S3 used to browse fine. Starting yesterday, I can’t get to any site even though the S3 says it is connected to my home WiFi network and shows 4 or 5 bars in connection strength. When I ask Chrome to go to a site, the screen is blank for a minute. Then I get an error message: “This webpage is not available. Google Chrome could not load the webpage b/c it took too long to respond.”

My internet is Comcast cable. My Macbook Air is able to browse the web fine using that home WiFi connection. I turned my S3 off and on. I turned the router off an on. Any suggestions? Thanks! — Paul

Troubleshooting: Hey Paul. Have you tried downloading an app from the Play Store when Chrome showed you that error message? Or did you try to browse other websites? It may seem like the problem is with Chrome or the website you’re trying to access. If the problem persists, however, two of the most effective ways to fix it is to “Forget” your network and let the detect and connect to it. Another one is to clear both cache and data of the browser you’re using or having problem with.

Galaxy S3 Won’t Turn On

Problem: Dear DroidGuy, I have a Samsung Galaxy s3. It’s always been in pretty good condition since I’ve had it. Well, a crack here and a dent there but always worked. Before I stopped using the device, the speaker had stopped working. I was able to get calls and hear the other people but they could never hear me. The same with my S voice and all the other sound settings on my phone. I’ve never dropped my phone in any liquids or got it wet from any substances that I’ve noticed. It was a time before it completely stopped working where I could walk to a certain area and then the other person would be able to hear me.

I did drop my phone a few times as I did mention, so now that I’m thinking, it could of knocked it out. But anywho. My phone has been off for a while but now I need to return to it for other purposes. I performed a factory reset the other day to completely clear the device. During the process, red small print appeared on the screen as it was shutting off. I didn’t quite read it all but I do remember seeing “Factory Data Reset FAILED”. Then after that the device hasn’t turned all the way on since. It turns on to the Samsung screen, then it goes to the T-Mobile screen, and stays on that screen as if its loading but never turns on. What’s this problem? What do I need to do to turn my device back on? With Help Needed, Mycah.

Solution: Yes, factory reset via Settings may fail sometimes that’s why I always recommend doing a full reset through the recovery mode. Mycah, I am certain that if you can do the master reset successfully, your phone will come back to life. So, I suggest you try one more time but this time do it in recovery mode. Here’s how…

Factory Reset

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, and Power key.
  3. When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
  4. When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
  5. Press the Volume down key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key to highlight ‘delete all user data.’
  8. Press Power button to select and start the master reset. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.

Galaxy S3 Won’t Boot Up

Problem: Hello, I really need help. In the summer, I was on vacation and my phone was charged and everything was fine. I was using the phone and put it down for a few minutes, when I went back to it, it was off and would not turn back on. This has happened to me before and I used your website to troubleshoot it and it worked. This time I didn’t get so lucky. I took the phone into at&t and they told me I have a prong or two missing in my charging port and there was nothing they could do unless i paid money. But I did nothing to the phone and it has been working PERFECTLY. Worse part is i cant retrieve any of the photos on the phone, i have important ones to me with family and a pet that passed. Is there anything you can do to help? If I leave it sit and don’t touch it for a while, then go to plug it in, the screen turns on with a battery and a wheel spinning in it and then goes black. That leads me to believe that it should be working! Thank you for your time, Kaitlin.

Suggestion: Hi Kaitlin! We’re glad we were able to help you with your previous problem. About the new one, if the tech was positive about his finding that the charging lacks a prong or two, then you will have problems charging the phone. So, what happens you plug the phone to charge? Verify if you can charge the phone normally for now because if not, then the USB charging port needs to be replaced.

Another question I want to ask is if the phone vibrates a few seconds after you hit the power button? If so, then you must check the Power button as it may be stuck. However, if the button looks fine, then there is another chance it’s damaged and needs to be replaced as well.

You said that the phone was working fine when you left it for a few minutes, have you noticed liquid particles or water perhaps that may have in contact with the phone while you were gone? Another cause of this kind of problem is liquid damage. To verify it’s not that, try to check the liquid damage indicator (LDI) on the battery. The little sticker should stay white, if it turned pink, red or purple, then the phone suffered from liquid damage.

Of course, I don’t want you to give up that easily, so I will give you a few steps you can follow to troubleshoot the phone:

  1. Remove the battery.
  2. Press and hold the power button for 1 minute.
  3. Replace the battery.
  4. Attempt to turn the phone on.
  5. If it doesn’t turn on, attempt to boot it up in safe mode.
  6. If safe mode fails, try recovery mode.

Should the phone refuses to come back on after these steps, then you should consider paying the tech to have the phone repaired.

Galaxy S3 Just Charges When Connected To Computer

Problem: Hello, I have a problem with my Samsung Galaxy S3, and i hope you will help m to find out why its happening. When i connect my USB cable to my computer to send data into my phone, the computer just charge the phone but it’s not recognizing the phone as a media device… so I don’t why this is happening every time… So, please help me… thanks.

Solution: Apparently the phone was set to just charge whenever it’s plugged in to a computer. You need to set it to be detected as a media device. Touch the status bar on your phone and drag it down, then choose Connected as a media device and then tap Media device. That’s it!

Galaxy S3 Not Registered On Network

Problem: How are you? Please help me, I’m desperate enough… I upgrade my S3 to 4.3 then the screen gone dark can’t even set up wallpaper and can’t answer the call then I try to downgrade to the original 4.1.2. After I done with it my S3 ended up with unregistered on network. Please help me thank you…God bless you!

Solution: Something’s telling me you tried to install an unofficial v4.3 firmware and it resulted to an unsuccessful installation deleting all your settings and all. Since it didn’t work, you re-flashed the original firmware thinking it may rectify the problem with the screen. Apparently, it did but another problem came out and this time, the capability of the phone to connect to your provider’s network is affected. I don’t know what your provider is but it seems like you installed a firmware that didn’t come from the company. I’m also not sure if your phone still has an IMEI or not or if the one it has now is the same as the one registered under your account. My suggestion is, call your provider and let the rep provision your phone again.

Galaxy S3 Randomly Gets Into Car Mode

Problem: Hi Harold. I just finished reading many of your support articles for Samsung Galaxy S3 and I haven’t seen my problem among those you’ve already addressed. Basically, the issue with my phone is more of a glitch and an annoyance. The Car Mode randomly turns on several times a day and I have to turn it off manually each time. After several minutes or few hours, I will find the phone with car mode enabled again. There was also a time when the phone just disabled it on its own, so I’m really stumped as this is the first time I experienced this problem with my 2-year old phone. Any suggestion on how to fix this issue will surely be appreciated. Thanks. — Michelle

Related Problem: Hi, my galaxy s3 keeps turning the hands free on and off by itself. I disabled the speaker bit now car mode keeps turning itself on and off! If makes noises constantly and uses battery quickly. What is going on? Thanks in advance, Kylie

Solution: Hi Michelle and Kylie. This problem is not common and only a few experienced it. The solution to this problem is a dry brush. With it, gently brush the microUSB or utility port to clean it up because the cause is probably dirt, or liquid or any debris that could conduct electricity. It is also possible that one of the prongs was misaligned and touched the other causing inconsistency to the phone’s circuit.

It is not an issue with any of the apps nor the firmware, so even if you reset the phone to its factory settings, this problem will haunt you. If brushing the utility port cannot fix the problem, I suggest you immediately bring the phone to a tech because it’s a hardware problem more than anything else.

Galaxy S3 Display Problems

Problem: Hey guys, so my phone slipped out of my hands the other day and hit the floor. I didn’t think too much of it, since it is in an otter box, but when I activated the screen I noticed half of it was a green hue and the other half was normal. There were no cracks on the screen, the touch screen still worked, but then the pixels gradually began to fade. Now, the screen is mostly black with a couple of colored pixels at the very top. Needless to say it is unusable, but when I activate it and do my unlock pattern I can feel it vibrate showing that it did in fact unlock. I’m wondering if maybe some of the wires were knocked loose on the interior of the screen or something, and I’m hoping there is an easy fix rather than replacing the screen all together. Any suggestions? — Evan

Suggestion: Exactly what I’m thinking Evan, but of course, there is a chance the display panel may have been broken due to the impact of the fall. So the worst case scenario here is you would be asked by the tech to buy or pay for the new display panel plus service fee. Apparently, we won’t be able to tell if it’s just a loose connection or the display panel was damaged without opening the phone. If you are confident to check on this, then go as please but if not, then let the tech check it for you.

The display panel may have been compromised but the digitizer wasn’t. That’s the reason why you can still execute touch commands normally. The digitizer is the glass on top of the display panel. It makes touchscreen possible.

Galaxy S3 WiFi Won’t Stay Off

Problem: Sir, my name is Craig. I saw your page on the web. Hope you can help. I have a Galaxy S3. This is through a straight talk plan. I ported my number from my from another straight talk phone to my new S3, also a straight talk plan. My wifi keeps coming on by itself. I saw what you said to do, which was simple to do. However, when I go to settings then more setting, then mobile networks. The only thing there is mobile data…enable data over mobile network. There is nothing else there. I think this is where the connection optimiser should be if I under stood correctly. If I’m doing something wrong or if you could help me I would appreciate it. Thank you!

Solution: Hey, Craig. Since you have a Straight Talk variant of Galaxy S3, I am certain there is an app that came pre-installed with the phone called “Straight Talk MyAccount.” This allows you to manage your account but it also does turn your WiFi on automatically each time you unlock the phone. Find the setting to disable auto WiFi on feature.

Now, about the WiFi settings, you don’t need to go into mobile networks. Just tap WiFi and touch the network you’re connected to and then tap the Menu key (left of the Home key), then choose Settings. Tap Advanced and you will find what you’re looking for. But in this case, I believe ST’s MyAccount app is the culprit. I believe you can disable it to prevent it from turning WiFi on automatically.
