How to fix Samsung Galaxy Note 4 with speaker phone that’s always on [Troubleshooting Guide]

Here is one problem with Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (#Samsung #GalaxyNote4) that you can see every day. It’s about the speaker phone that is always on regardless whether the owner is receiving incoming or making outgoing calls.


I personally encountered this problem before, however, it was caused by an app that has the ability to manipulate the dialer app and its core functions on a rooted phone. This here might be a different issue and that’s what we’re going to troubleshooting. Here’s the actual message from our reader just to give you an idea how it occurs to him:

Whenever I get a phone call or make a call, my speaker phone is always on and I have to physically turn it off. Sometimes it says it’s off, but it’s really on and I have to tap “speaker” once to light it up and again to get it to shut off. This is very annoying when receiving a private call!

I’ve tried a soft reset and have uninstalled every app that has anything to do with the phone (like navigation apps). I made sure my S-voice was disabled and deleted my entire system cache…all to no avail.

I really don’t want to do a factory reset. Please tell me you know how to fix this issue.” — David

There are several factors to consider when troubleshooting this problem as it might be just a glitch or a serious one. We need to isolate the problem in the first step so that we’ll know what to do next…

Step 1: Boot the phone in safe mode 

Yes, it must be the first step. It will immediately tell us whether or not third-party or downloaded apps have something to do with it.

  1. Turn off the phone completely.
  2. Press and hold the Power key and the Volume Down key.
  3. When the phone starts to boot, release the Power key but continue holding the Vol Down key until the phone finished restarting.
  4. Safe mode will be displayed at the lower left corner; you may release the Volume Down key now.

You will still be able to use the Phone app in safe mode as it is a core service so try making a call just to find out if the speaker phone is turned on. If so, then one of the services might be causing this problem, for example S Voice.

Step 2: Clear the Cache and Data of the Phone app 

Since you already made sure that S Voice had nothing to do with it, try to clear the cache and data of the Dialer app (it’s the Phone app).

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Tap Settings and scroll to ‘Applications’ section.
  3. Touch Application Manager.
  4. Swipe left or right to display contents of ‘ALL’ tab.
  5. Scroll to and tap Dialer.
  6. Tap Clear cache.
  7. Tap Clear data, then OK.

After clearing both the cache and data and the problem remained, it more likely a firmware issue.

Step 3: Try firmware update if possible 

There were actually a lot of Note 4 users that were complaining about this exact problem; many of them said firmware update fixed it. So, the next thing to do is to find out if there’s an available update for your phone.

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Scroll to and tap System update.
  4. Tap Update now.
  5. If there’s an update available, follow on-screen instructions to upgrade the device’s firmware.
  6. If none, tap OK.

Step 4: Find app that’s causing the problem

In case the speaker phone is off by default in safe mode, it means that there’s an app that’s causing it. Find that app and uninstall it. If you’re using an app to record your calls, then try disabling it and make a call. Do the same for all other apps you suspect to be causing the problem.

To uninstall an app, follow these steps:

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Tap Settings and scroll to ‘Applications’ section.
  3. Touch Application Manager.
  4. Swipe left or right to display contents of ‘ALL’ tab.
  5. Scroll to and tap desired app.
  6. Tap Uninstall.

Step 5: Master Reset 

I understand you don’t want to do this but if this is what it takes to fix the issue, then it’s worth all the hassles. You might be used to resetting your phone through Settings but I suggest you do it in recovery mode.

  1. Turn off the Galaxy Note 4 completely.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up and the Home keys together, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Note 4 vibrates, release both the Home and Power keys but continue holding the Volume Up key.
  4. When the Android System Recovery shows on the screen, release the Vol Up key.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’ and press the Power key to select it.
  6. Now highlight ‘Yes — delete all user data’ using the Vol Down key and press the Power key to begin the reset.
  7. When the master reset is complete, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key.
  8. The Note 4 will restart but it will be longer than usual. When it reaches the Home screen, then begin your setup.
