Solutions for Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Power and Battery Issues [Part 1]

Although a Samsung Galaxy S5 has proven itself after its release to be a pretty stable smartphone, many users have continously complained about its battery and power aspects. We hope that publishing these issues and solutions can help the Android community.

Problem #1: Samsung Galaxy Note 4 won’t charge wirelessly if on standby

My Note 4 is QI and it charges fine as long as the phone doesn’t go into standby. The charging stops as soon as the phone goes into standby. What can I do to keep the charge going? Thank you for great answer site to  some puzzling problems. — Donald

Solution: Hi Donald. Some wireless chargers are designed to charge only when they detect no activity on the phone, like when the screen is off. If your charger works differently, try to consult its manual or ask support from its maker.

Problem #2: Samsung Galaxy Note 4 won’t power on

I was watching a snap story and my phone froze. It turned off and won’t turn back on. I tried removing the battery. Took it to Sprint and they can’t figure out the problem. They say it’s not the battery. — Mandy

Problem #3: Samsung Galaxy Note 4 drains battery fast and reboots constantly

My wife has two problems with her Note 4 is that it reboots constantly on its own. And reboot constantly,  I mean when it finishes rebooting, it reboots again.

Another problem is her battery is becoming unpredictable on how much power it has. Sometimes she is at 30% and within 3 minutes, it’s powering off because battery is dead. — Josh

Solution: Hi Josh. Your main task is to determine what the real problem is. As it stands, the problem may be due to either hardware or software. The easiest thing to do first is to check the battery. If you have access to another Note 4 battery or if you can buy one, do it. If a battery is failing or malfunctioning, it may not charge properly and may only store a tiny fraction of power. That may be the reason why your wife’s Note 4 reboots constantly and only lasts for a few minutes.

Another reason for the problem may be some failing hardware components inside. Diagnosing a hardware problem needs special tools and expertise so you want a qualified technician to do that for you.

Lastly, software or firmware glitch or app issues can also drain battery fast and force the phone to constant reboot cycle. To determine if you have a software issue at hand, try doing these procedures:

Boot the phone in Safe Mode

Booting your phone in Safe Mode prevents third party apps from running so if any of your installed applications is to blame, doing this may help you isolate the root cause. Here are the steps:

  • Turn off the phone completely.
  • Press and hold the Power key and the Volume Down key.
  • When the phone starts to boot, release the Power key but continue holding the Vol Down key until the phone finished restarting.
  • Safe mode will be displayed at the lower left corner; you may release the Volume Down key now.

Restore the phone to its factory defaults via master reset

Master reset, as the name suggests, brings the phone back to its defaults. Some rogue apps can cause the phone to reboot and/or drain battery faster so wiping the phone clean may be the only answer. If you haven’t tried doing a factory reset before, simply follow these steps:

  • Turn off the Galaxy Note 4 completely.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up and the Home keys together, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the Note 4 vibrates, release both the Home and Power keys but continue holding the Volume Up key.
  • When the Android System Recovery shows on the screen, release the Vol Up key.
  • Using the Volume Down key, highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’ and press the Power key to select it.
  • Now highlight ‘Yes — delete all user data’ using the Vol Down key and press the Power key to begin the reset.
  • When the master reset is complete, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key.
  • The Note 4 will restart but it will be longer than usual. When it reaches the Home screen, then begin your setup

Hello I am hoping you can help me with the issues I’m having with my T-Mobile Note 4. Ever since I got the most recent software update, 5.1 I believe, my phone’s performance has been terrible. My battery last about 25% as long as it used to, my phone gets hot now, my keyboard freezes, my camera won’t focus, my phone will die at 15% battery, and a few other random issues with the battery problem being the worst of it. I have tried hard resetting with no luck. I would really appreciate any help you could give me as this used to be an amazing phone.

Problem #5: Galaxy Note 4 drains battery fast and gets hot

Hello Droid Guy. I have the Galaxy Note 4 and I must say that I do enjoy and feel that it’s the best smartphone I’ve ever had by far. But it is always getting hot and the battery drains fast. I honestly don’t know what to do about it. Can you offer any advice? It would be greatly appreciated.

Problem #6: How to revert Galaxy Note 4 to KitKat

Dear Sir. My name is Raim. I want to share some issues which i am facing with my Galaxy Note 4 device which i bought 1 month ago. In the beginning i was very happy with my device but after i upgraded it from KitKat to Lollippop 1 week ago i noticed drastic change in my battery life and some issues like heating which i wasnt facing before.I must say that i regret a lot.I watched some videos in YouTube how to downgrade back to KitKat with programs like ODIN3 and tried to downgrade but wasn’t successful. Please help if there is a chance to downgrade it back to KitKat. Many thanks. — Raim

Solution: Hi Raim. There are a few forums that offer ways to revert to KitKat but we don’t recommend that you use them. Besides, most of these tutorials are unverified and, based on your experience, some of them doesn’t work. Problem #7: Galaxy Note 4 reboots by itself

So for about 1 week now i notice when my phone is in my pocket it powers off on it own. When i see that i try and power it back on , holding the power button; but it doesn’t power back on . So i would take out the battery for couple seconds and put it back in , then it powers back on . And i notice it does it everytime i put it in my pocket for 10 to 15 minutes.  Do you think its due to heat or maybe my  car key can interfere with it . It’s a head ache. waiting on your response  thanks. — Rinda

Solution: Hi Rinda. Please verify if the phone’s battery is causing the problem. As mentioned above, a malfunctioning battery can cause the phone to reboot on its own. Using another battery would help you confirm if our guess is right.
