Apps are the lifeblood of today’s smartphone and without them, a Galaxy Note 4 simply becomes an expensive paperweight. Sadly, important they may be, apps are still the number source of problems for many of us. These problems may show different symptoms but most of them have a common solution. This post provides more of a general solution rather than a specific fix for each problem. below are the issues discussed:

Hello. My Note 4 (N910A), which is running KitKat 4.4.4, has constantly been slow and laggy, even after I just factory reset it.
One common issue is that about once every hour, or sometimes more, an error pops up that says “Google Play has stopped working”, which is then immediately followed by “com.google.process.gapps has stopped.”
I am not too sure on why this is happening, as I can’t diagnose it to any specific apps that I have. Google Play still works fine, and I can download apps whenever I want. However, this seems to happen very often, and I am not sure why.
Another issue I am having is that my phone is running much slower than it was about 3 months ago. I didn’t make any major, or even minor, changes since then. It just seems to have slowed down for no reason at all. The factory reset didn’t help this either.
Sometimes my battery has issues too, where it says 10%, then all of the sudden it drops to 2%, and then shuts down. I can then turn it back on and the battery will be back at 10% or so.

Solution: Hi Andrew. The first issue here may be the result of an issue with Samsung’s own Download Manager app. The “gapps” in the error message indicates that Google apps are involved as well although there’s no way to pinpoint which one it is. If any of the phone’s Google apps encounters errors, the message you’re getting usually pop-up. To fix it, make sure to enable Download Manager app first. Here’s how:
- Tap on Apps.
- Go to Settings and tap it.
- Tap More.
- Tap Application Manager.
- Go under Disabled tab and look for Download Manager. If this app is not under Disabled tab, go to ALL tab instead.
- Tap Download Manager.
- Make sure that Download Manager is enabled by tapping on Enable button. (if you can see Disable button, that’s an indication that the app has been enabled.)
- Reboot your Note 4.
If there is no change and the error message still pops up randomly, try clearing the cache and data of Google Services and Google Framework apps. If you have the option to uninstall updates, you can tap on that button as well.
Issue seems to be with chat apps during video calls: Viber, Google Hangout.
When I try to do a video call with these apps, I can see the other person’s video but nothing from my phone. Only my voice goes through. I’ve updated the apps but still doesn’t work. The camera app itself works fine and I can film back and front facing videos. It’s just when I try to video call via Viber or Hangout etc that it doesn’t work.
My phone is unlocked and my carrier is Virgin Mobile.

Solution: Hi Andrea. Have you tried using other messaging services that offer video calls like Skype or Facebook’s Messenger? If these apps don’t work either, you must call Virgin Mobile for direct assistance. The issue may be firmware- or account-related. That means that your carrier may have put a brake on apps that might eat up more bandwidth from your current data plan.
If you have Wi-Fi at home, try to use it on video calls to see if there’s a difference.
I keep getting an error message in the notification bar saying Google Service Play Error. Also a triangle with an exclamation mark appears in the top left hand side of the screen and below the message it says requested by Google Music, even though I wasn’t using it and if I do, it still works.
A message also comes up in a white box in the middle of the screen when i use Facebook or playing apps. I have deleted them and the cache then downloaded again. Restarting the phone doesn’t solve the problem. — Alastair
Solution: Hi Alistair. A Google app may be the trigger to the errors you’re getting so try to clear the cache and data of Google Services Framework. Just follow these steps:
- Go to Settings.
- Proceed to Applications.
- Select Manage Applications.
- Tap the All tab.
- Look for Google Services Framework app and tap it.
- From there, you will see the Clear Cache and Clear Data buttons.
Alternatively, you can follow the same steps to turn off Google Play Music app if it continues to bother you.
A third party application can also mess up other apps. If you installed many apps, it may be impossible to identify which one is the reason for the trouble without troubleshooting or individually removing them. However, you can still do something to see if our hunch is right by booting your phone in safe mode. This will prevent third party applications from running. If any of them is the culprit, the error should not occur in safe mode. That’s your signal to start uninstalling apps until you have eliminated the source of the problem. To boot in safe mode, just follow these steps:
- Turn off the phone completely.
- Press and hold the Power key and the Volume Down key.
- When the phone starts to boot, release the Power key but continue holding the Volume Down key until the phone finished restarting.
- Safe mode will be display at the lower left corner; you may release the Volume Down key now.
The Facebook app installed on my Galaxy Note 4 stopped working this evening (Nov 4). I was in my pickup truck, parked, when I tried launching the app. It started to bring up my news feed, but it hanged for a moment with the little rotating circle progress icon going. Then it quit back to the home screen of app icons.
The same problem, failing to launch, happened when connected to my Wi-Fi network at home. I tried rebooting the phone, then clearing the app’s cache, then clearing data and then even uninstalling the app and reinstalling it. None of those steps worked.
I’ll also add the Facebook app and its companion Messenger and Pages Manager apps are very piggy with their install footprint -well over 500MB for all three apps with all the updates applied. — Bobby
Solution: Hi Bobby. The problem may not be the Facebook app itself but may be on the firmware level. Try doing a factory reset to see how it goes. Here’s how to do it:
- From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
- Launch Settings and scroll to ‘User and Backup’ section.
- Tap Backup and reset.
- If you want, you can tick the checkboxes next to Automatic restore and Back up my data.
- Tap Factory data reset.
- Touch Reset device.
- You may be asked to enter your PIN or Password.
- Tap Continue and then Delete all.
If the Facebook app issue continues after the reset and all the rest are working normally, try to contact Facebook app developer team. Facebook app is constantly evolving and the developer team needs as much input from users as possible to improve their product. This may be not be an isolated case so you will be doing a favor for other users if this issue gets fixed as soon as possible.
I am always getting a pop up that says my phone has a virus and I don’t respond to it. If I try 2 exit out of it I will have to hit the back key several times to get rid of it. It keeps redirecting me to different sites. It even comes up when I’m trying to answer my phone sometimes or anytime I’m just using my phone. Sometimes it will take me to a page from Facebook that says I won a prize claim now. I can’t seem to get rid of it. It even happens when I’m not touching the phone. It pops up out of nowhere notifying that my phone is infected. Sometimes it has the Android green guy on there. It comes from different websites. How do I get it to stop. — Joanna
Solution: Hi Joanna. Annoying popups and redirects to other web pages that tries to sell something is an old advertisement trick so don’t fall for them. Your phone may have been infected with a malicious software via one of the installed apps. Sometimes, uninstalling the responsible app can effectively put a stop to these popups. If you recently installed something before the popups started happening, try to delete that app and see the difference. If you don’t recall installing anything though, simply do a factory reset to clean your phone. Steps on how to do a factory reset are provided above.
Now, doing a factory reset is not the solution itself. To prevent popups from coming back, you still need to identify which of the apps is the culprit. That means making sure that you don’t install the source of the virus again after a factory reset. Since you may not have an idea which of your apps gives you the headache, try observing how the phone behaves for several hours after you install an app. This process may take you several days to complete depending on the number of apps you want to use again.
Refrain from installing applications that don’t have good reputation in Google Play reviews. Games are usually loaded with adwares so be wary when installing such apps from unknown developers. Try to check what other users have to say via reviews before putting an app to your phone. You don’t want your intimate details (contacts, photos, videos, social media networks) compromised after installing a virus. While this may be the extreme thing that can happen, it still pays to be suspicious with everything that you install in your phone. We don’t need to emphasize the fact that a phone is like a personal treasure trove. Advertisers and hackers welcome all digital information they can collect from an individual.
