Amazon Says Black Friday Weekend Kindle Sales Doubled From Last Year

Amazon is saying that their Kindle sales have nearly doubled over this Black Friday and Cyber Monday weekend. That’s great!

Unfortunately, Amazon isn’t going to be releasing their sales figures for their Kindles, so we won’t get to see statistics side-by-side from last year’s Black Friday weekend. In addition to that, Amazon isn’t even saying what Kindle’s were hot sellers. Based off of their massive Kindle Fire coupon on Cyber Monday, I have a hunch that that was a best seller. Who knows though, these massive sales could of just been the extremely cheap e-ink Kindle e-books. We don’t know for sure, which is quite unfortunate.

Regardless, it’s great news to hear that Amazon’s Kindle sales are doing fantastic. Phone Arena also reports that Cyber Monday of 2012 was the busiest day for Kindle sales worldwide. With Amazon’s 4 worldwide bestllers all being Kindle’s, I’m going to go ahead and assume that customers loved Amazon’s $129 deal on the 7-inch Kindle Fire. Phone Arena also reports that the Fire HD was the most gifted and wished for product on Amazon.

Hopefully when Black Friday / Cyber Monday rolls around next year Amazon will be willing to give out their exact sales figures.

In other news, Microsoft and Nintendo have released their sales figures. Microsoft sold over 750,000 Xbox 360 units, which surpassed their expectations. Nintendo only sold a good 400,000 Wii U units, but some speculate this is because of the constant shortages they were having.

Regardless of all of that, it looks like this past weekend was great for some of the big name companies!

Samsung Curved 55-Inch 4K Ultra HD Smart LED TV ($747.99 Plus $100 Amazon Gift Card, Regularly $1047.99)

4K is eventually going to make full HD displays and TV screen obsolete, and the sooner you hop on board the ultra-high-definition train, the sooner you will be able to enjoy your favorite movies and TV shows in their full glory. Samsung’s 55” curved 4K smart TV now retails for just $747.99 on Amazon, and it even comes with $100 gift card.

With Samsung, you can be sure that you are getting only the highest quality components and the best image quality. This model offers excellent contrast and accurate color reproduction, especially compared with similarly priced models from other manufacturers. Its thin, curved design will make it a centerpiece of your living room and, when sitting close enough, will pull you right into the action.

To make it easier for you to share content from your Android smartphone to the TV, Samsung has created an app called Samsung Smart View. You can download it from the Play Store and use it control your Samsung TV without a remote control, play content from your mobile device or PC, and even create personalized playlists to access your favorite multimedia files.

Anova Culinary Bluetooth Precision Cooker ($99, Regularly $149)

Don’t you know that you can now cook dozens of delicious meals without having to worry about setting the right temperature, keeping an eye on a timer or carefully watching when the water is about to start boiling so it won’t spill over and extinguish the flame? With Anova Culinary Precision Cooker, you can.

Even though it looks like a stick blender, it’s essentially a smart heating device that you can attach to a pot and leave it alone to perform its magic. Anova Culinary Precision Cooker is operated either with its touch interface or by connecting it to your smartphone. Simply download the Anova Culinary app from the Play Store, select which recipe you would like to follow, and complete a few easy steps while your smart precision cooker takes care of all the hard work.

Precision cooking in water has several key advantages over other techniques: it produces consistent results, preserves the original taste and texture, reduces food waste, and provides you with a much greater flexibility during cooking. For the discounted price of just $99, it’s a perfect gift that’s guaranteed to keep on giving.

Ecobee3 Thermostat ($199.99, Regularly $249.99)

A smart thermostat, such as Ecobee3, can lead to dramatic savings on your energy bills and increase your comfort level. Regular, dumb thermostats usually read temperature in a single room, adjusting heating in your apartment or house based on a very limited amount of information. Ecobee3 uses strategically placed room sensors that can detect room occupancy and deliver heat or cold only where they’re needed.

Installation is simple: you install the main unit in place of your old thermostat, connect it to your local Wi-Fi network, and put the included wireless sensors (or a single sensor, in the case of the $199 bundle) anywhere you please. After that’s done, download the official app to your Android smartphone and set it up to suit your needs.

Ecobee3 works with Amazon Alexa for voice control, can be controlled from anywhere, and owners report an average of 23% of saving on heating and cooling. Included in the box are the Ecobee3 thermostat itself, a single room sensor with detachable stand, a Power Extender Kit, screws and drywall plugs, standard and large trim plates, a quick-start guide, and a detailed installation guide and wire labels.

SONOS PLAY:1 Wireless Speaker ($149.99, Regularly $199.99)

Choosing the right wireless speaker can be a daunting task. A quick search on Amazon will get you hundreds if not thousands of results, and it’s up to you to dig through the marketing dirt and separate the wheat from the chaff. We’d like to make it easier for you. All we need from you is an answer to a single question: do you want a speaker for indoor or outside use? In both cases, the Sonos PLAY:1 is a great choice.

This mid-sized Wi-Fi speaker fits on any shelf or tabletop, has a very long battery life of more than 10 hours, is humidity resistant, and can even be paired with another PLAY:1 speaker for wider stereo sound. Because the speaker relies on Wi-Fi, instead of Bluetooth, you never have to worry about dropouts or limited signal range. It also makes the setup procedure very easy, as the only step is to connect both the speaker and your audio source to the same Wi-Fi network.

Samsung SmartThings Hub ($49.99, Regularly $99.99)

Samsung SmartThings Hub is a brain of the world’s largest platform of smart devices, which currently supports over 200 different devices, including locks, speakers, thermostats, lights, and a wide range of different sensors, among other things. Once you hook it up to an internet-connected router’s Ethernet port, you’ll be able to use the free SmartThings app to control any compatible smart device—and, as we’ve said, there’s a lot of them.

The most common use-cases include receiving alerts if appliances or electronics were accidentally left on, turning on a portable heater or fan, remotely restricting power to electronics or appliances, triggering a light or turning on a siren to alert you if water leak is detected, reminding you to close your front doors, or receiving alerts when family members arrive home.

Both Samsung and Amazon have big plans with the platform, and, with Samsung SmartThings Hub, you can already reap the benefits of the Internet of Things.

Acer Chromebook R 13 Convertible ($349.99, SAVE $50)

The Acer Chromebook R 13 is arguably the hottest Chromebook of this year. It almost seems like Acer has taken a hint from Asus and its ZenBook line of premium, aluminum laptops that put heavy emphasis on good looks. This 13-incher is light, slim, sleek, and convertible: everything a casual user or a busy student might want from a laptop.

Actually, the Chromebook R 13 goes beyond everything. Its Full HD display uses IPS technology for wide viewing angles and accurate color representation. If your eyesight is exceptionally great, you could use the native resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, or you can increase the scaling to make everything larger and more legible.

The screen sits on a hinge that supports 360-degree rotation, allowing you to choose from 4 different modes: notebook, display, tent, and tablet. This way, you can write an essay or create a PowerPoint presentation just like you would on a laptop with a traditional hinge, then switch to the tent mode to show it off to your classmates or colleagues, and, finally, turn the laptop into a tablet to watch your favorite YouTube show as a reward.

Until recently, Chromebooks were confined mostly to Chrome, the popular web browser, but that’s no longer the case. Google has been rolling out updates for popular Chromebooks, including the Acer Chromebook R 13. “I received the Chromebook on the 5th. I have had 2 updates since that time, and have been able to install and use Google Play Store in Stable mode,” said K. Jennings on November 13, 2016, in an Amazon review. In other words, after you turn on your new R 13 and install all updates, you will be able to access all Play Store apps just like you can on your Android smartphone or tablet.

Asus ZenFone Zoom Unlocked Phone, 64GB (U.S. Warranty) ($199, SAVE $200)

Asus makes attractive smartphones with premium specifications that rarely ever fail to receive raving reviews from tech reviewers. Unfortunately, as all high-end products do, they often cost more than you might be willing to pay. Well, that won’t be true at all on Cyber Monday. Amazon has cut $200 from the original price of the 64 GB version Asus ZenFone Zoom smartphone, making it one of the best current smartphone deals.

Things look fairly regular on the front side: a sharp 5.5-inch IPS full HD display protected by the Gorilla Glass 4 technology, 5 MP camera, and very narrow bezels that give the device a decisively premium look. But look at the back and you’ll discover the world’s thinnest camera with 3X optical zoom and an innovative 10-element lens from HOYA. Indeed, a dream-come-true for all avid mobile photographers.

Internals of the Asus ZenFone Zoom are equally impressive: an Intel 2.3GHz Quad Core processor with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. Zoom’s PowerVR 6430 graphics-processing unit is perfect for playing the latest Android games, and the phone’s large battery helps you stay in the game for several hours. Overall, a great smartphone with virtually no flaws—at a ridiculously attractive price.

Amazon Fire TV ($74.99, SAVE $15)

If you still haven’t turned your HDTV into a smart entertainment hub, now is a great chance for you to do so. Amazon is offering their Fire TV for just $74.99, a small price for a huge bag of fun. The Fire TV is a 4K-ready gateway to over 7,000 apps and games, 300,000 TV episodes, and countless songs from your favorite artists.

The small, black box hides a powerful quad-core processor, dedicated graphics engine, and 2 GB of memory, resulting in over 75% more processing power over the previous generation. With Fire TV’s highly efficient HEVC video encoding, you can enjoy high-definition content without clogging up your internet connection.

Built directly into the Fire TV is Alexa Voice Remote, the brain behind Amazon Echo. You can simply tell her the name of the show you would like to watch, and she will instantly put it on. Want to skip a cringeworthy scene? Just say, “Alexa, fast forward a minute.”

Last but not least, you can cast video from your Android smartphone with the Fire TV, and you can also enhance your Fire TV experience by installing the Fire TV Remote App on your smartphone to use it instead of the regular remote that’s included with the Fire TV.

Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd Generation) – Works with Amazon Alexa ($199, SAVE $50)

Learning thermostats from Nest have been a popular way how to enter the world of connected smart-home gadgets. This sleek device quietly monitors your temperature preferences, learning what temperature you prefer at any given time of the day. It can display the current temperature on its bright screen, which automatically lights up as you walk across the room.

Because Nest knows how to make you comfortable in the most energy-efficient manner, it can save you an average of 10-12 percent on heating bills and 15 percent on cooling bills. You can control it remotely via Nest’s Android app. The app lets you adjust the temperature, see your energy usage, view and edit your thermostat schedule, get extreme temperature alerts, and much more. You can also connect it with other Nest smart gadgets, such as Nest Protect or Nest Cam.

SanDisk 128 GB Class 10 micro SD Memory Card ($29.99, SAVE $50)

Amazon has partnered with SanDisk, an American manufacturer of flash memory products, to produce a microSD card that’s guaranteed to be compatible with all Amazon devices, such as the Fire Tablet and Fire TV. Of course, it will also work with just about any other tablets, smartphones, cameras or computers that uses a 128 GB microSD card.

It usually retails for $79.99, but you can get it for just $29.99 on Cyber Monday. As a Class 10 card, its performance is more than sufficient for full HD video playback and recording. 128 GB of storage space lets you store approximately 45,600 photos or 260 SD or 130 HD movies or 32,000 songs, depending on their quality.

[Deal] Huawei Watch selling with a 15% discount at Target

Huawei Watch

Popular retailer #Target is holding a site wide 15% off promo as part of #CyberMonday. Among the list of devices that are up for grabs is the #HuaweiWatch, which is the company’s #AndroidWear smartwatch. The pricing of the wearable ranges between $299.99 to $399.99, so saving 15% on that amount is quite significant.

The amount is valid only if you use the code CYBER15 when prompted, so make sure you do that in order to get the aforementioned discount.

As for the pricing, the retailer offers free shipping, but tax amount will take the total value up significantly. In any case, you stand to save some dough here (but not much), which could be quite crucial when you’re investing north of $300 for a smartwatch. The Huawei Watch is one of the premium smartwatches available out there and is compatible with Android as well as iOS devices.

The wearable is available online only, so customers can’t avail this offer from one of Target’s many retail locations.

Black Friday 2014 Android guide: what to expect from carriers (Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and more)

Black Friday 2014 is almost upon us, and we were this close to send y’all out for your holiday Android shopping without consideration for carrier deals. Rookie mistake on our part, and we apologize for it, although in our defense, it was only in the last couple of days that the promotions started cascading from the likes of Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile.

Black Friday crowd

And let’s not forget Cricket Wireless, US Cellular, Boost Mobile, MetroPCS and Virgin Mobile. These smaller fighters in the service operator arena often try to compensate for their low profiles with outstanding discounts, diverting the spotlight away from the “Big Four” for at least a week or so.

But let’s cut to the chase, shall we? Here’s what the magnificent carrier nine have in store for Android addicts this Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday:

Courtesy dictated we begin with the most popular wireless provider stateside, and surprisingly, we’re getting off on the right foot here. Big Red’s generosity is extremely uncharacteristic, suggesting el primo carrier of the nation might be feeling AT&T’s heat. Perhaps Sprint and T-Mo’s too, even if the user base gap is enormous at the moment.

Xperia Z3v

Highly recommended deals:

  • Sony Xperia Z3v – free with two-year contracts (down from $200 currently at both Verizon and Amazon)
  • Motorola Droid Turbo – $100 with carrier agreements ($100 off and an all-time low)
  • Second-gen Motorola Moto X in Verizon-exclusive “football leather” flavor – free with contracts (wacky, tacky but cool)
  • LG G Watch – $99 (oldie but goldie)

You can probably do better:

  • Samsung Galaxy Note 4 – $199 with pacts ($100 off and just too darn expensive for an on-contract smartphone)
  • Samsung Galaxy S5 – free after $50 mail-in rebate (rebate, Verizon, really?!)
  • Jawbone Up24 – $99 (already available at $99 on Amazon)

Editor’s note: Of the four highly recommended special offers, just one is restricted to Black Friday only – the Xperia Z3v deal. The other three can theoretically be had from Friday to Sunday, if stocks last.

We’re receiving mixed signals as to what Ma Bell is prepping for the holidays, with HTC’s RE Camera, for instance, tipped to go down $50 by some sources, and a full $100 by others. All in all, we believe the $100 reduction will be valid on Black Friday, and the $50 trim shall remain instated through January 8.

AT&T store

Speaking of January 8, AT&T has a couple of special bundles to sell on the cheap all the way until next year. Namely, Samsung Galaxy Alpha purchases on Next will let you have the Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 at a measly 99 cents, and 2014 Moto X buys come with $50 savings towards the 360 or Hint.

Weak and convoluted, AT&T. The former can be said about Pebble and Samsung Gear Fit’s imminent $99 deals. Which only leaves these two as must-buys:

You thought AT&T’s deals were uninteresting? Wait until you hear what Sprint’s definition of cheap stocking stuffers looks like. Starting Thanksgiving Day, qualifying clients looking to lease or score a Galaxy S5 or S5 Sport on Easy Pay will get $200 off.

Galaxy S5 Sport

Instead of coughing up around $30 a month for two years, you’ll be paying the Now Network just $20 for a grand total of $480. Too… darn… complicated, Sprint. Meanwhile, the S4 at no charge with two-year contracts is by no means anything new or attractive. Oh, well, there’s always next year to try again.

The leading “UnCarrier” jumped the gun and started the festivities already, letting Magenta fans nab an Alcatel OneTouch Pop 7 tablet completely for free with qualifying Mobile Internet plans. That’s $0 upfront, and installments of… $0 a month. The downside? It’s an in-store deal only.

T-Mobile Black Friday

Online, the Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy S5 cost $417 and $510 respectively in the long run, with no charge outright and $17 and $21 monthly payments. Decent but nothing to write home about.

US Cellular

Seemingly content with its steady number five position in the US operator ranks, USC looks like it’s not even trying to grow. For Pete’s sake, their “batch” of Black Friday 2014 deals stars one lousy gadget. Just the one.

G Pad

And yes, the LG G Pad 7.0 is a fairly solid bargain, at $0.01 with pacts, price valid already. But what if you want a higher-end tab? A discounted smartphone? Well, then US Cellular is probably not the carrier for you.

Cricket Wireless

Did we or did we not “warn” you the smaller players of the wireless service game go the extra mile in slashing their prices near the holidays? Cricket, which is technically one of AT&T’s daughter companies, proves it better than anyone, discounting among others Samsung’s Galaxy S4 and S5 by a whopping 50 percent.

Cricket Black Friday

Half off, that’s right, and for once, we don’t mean an on-contract gimmick dropping $200 to $100 or, even worse, $100 to $50. Cricket takes half off the prepaid, no-contract S4 or S5, bringing them down to, wait for it, $215 and $295 respectively.

And because Cricket doesn’t just cherish its power user subscribers, here are an extra few promos on lower-end devices:

Virgin Mobile

Sprint hits back at AT&T in the prepaid subsidiary duel, with an assortment of promos meant to satisfy basically anybody that doesn’t want the best of the best in mobile tech nowadays. True, Virgin has a deal on the high-end Galaxy S5, but their bona fide winners are the much less impressive S3, LG Volt or LG Optimus F3.

Virgin Black Friday

Boost Mobile

Another Sprint subsidiary, more or less the same promos, savings and even products on sale. The differences are Boost’s lineup is a little lighter, and its deals aren’t live yet. That said, your best bets at Boost Mobile once they start out the sale are probably Samsung’s Galaxy S3, LG’s Volt or Optimus F3, and Kyocera’s Hydro Vibe.

All uber-cheap, all 4G LTE-enabled, all a tad short of being described as powerhouses by late 2014 standards.

We’ve left Metro, T-Mobile’s sister operator, for last not because its promotions are the worst, but on account of the prepaid specialist’s secrecy. Yeah, yeah, yeah, Black Friday isn’t here yet, but it’d be nice to know some specifics about Metro’s upcoming “bargains” to see if they’re worth the wait.

Right now, all we know for sure is some no-contract smartphone purchases made in some physical stores will be eligible for BOGO deals with some other handhelds. Otherwise put, you may or may not get two phones at the price of one.

MetroPCS Black Friday

The Galaxy S5 is likely the headliner of the sale, but you’re unlikely to be able to bundle it with a second S5. At best, an LG Optimus L70, Samsung Galaxy Avant or something.

Before saying our good-byes, remember our promise. Anything you need on Thursday, Friday and next Monday on the low-cost Android buying front, we’re here for you.

Motorola offering 2014 Moto X for $359 on Cyber Monday [Deal]

2014 Moto X

2014 Moto X Cyber Monday

If you’re planning on getting a 2014 Moto X, it might make sense to halt plans for the moment. Motorola has announced a very attractive Cyber Monday sale of its flagship where the smartphone is being sold for just $359.99. This is a price reduction of $140, which is substantial given how new the smartphone is. However, stocks might be limited so you might have to act quickly on Monday to get in on this deal.

To be applicable for this discount, customers will have to sign up for a form on Motorola’s site (link below) which will then fetch you a custom coupon code to be used during checkout on Monday. It’s imperative that you follow these steps as you will not be eligible for the discount without it.

You can get the smartphone on contract from Verizon at just $0.01, which is a deal worth considering if you don’t want to spend big on the smartphone upfront. The company also has something for its existing users with a 30% off on mobile accessories on the same day. The company started offering its music accessories with a 50% discount yesterday, but this new deal covers a wide range of accessories including covers and cases.

Cricket Wireless to cut 50% off the Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy S5 for Cyber Monday

Galaxy S5

While most retailers are focusing on Black Friday sales, Cricket Wireless is already preparing for the Cyber Monday sales which is held the following Monday for all those who missed out on Black Friday. The carrier has announced the sale of the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy S5 this Monday with up to 50% off on the asking price. While the customers might not be too favorable towards last year’s Galaxy flagship, the discounted price might sway customers in favor of the handset.

The Galaxy S5 on the other hand is still quite in demand, so might catch the attention of plenty of customers. The carrier is yet to divulge details on any other smartphones, but for the time being it seems like the two Galaxy flagships are the best deals to expect from the prepaid carrier. Under the discounted price, the Galaxy S5 can be had for $295 while the Galaxy S4 should be available for $215 going by the carrier’s current pricing.

If your focus is towards Black Friday, Cricket Wireless will be providing a free Dot View Case along with the purchase of the midrange HTC Desire 510 handset. This deal can be acquired from Cricket’s own outlets or GameStop retail stores across the country this Friday.

Top 10 Tablets to look foward to this Black Friday

Thanksgiving is upon us, and there is a lot to be thankful for, such as the upcoming Black Friday specials! We have seen a lot of cool tablets launch this year, and as usual, everyone is going to want to get their hands on it for Christmas. That said, Black Friday and Cyber Monday are the perfect time to purchase these gadgets! You are looking at deals up to sixty, maybe even eighty percent off. What better a time to purchase electronics? With all of that said, here is our top 10 tablets that you should be looking out for this Black Friday and Cyber Monday!

1. Google Nexus 9

Nexus 9 Colors
Nexus 9 Colors

While the Nexus 10 was a phenomenal tablet, the Nexus 9 is Google’s best yet. The Nexus 9 is manufactured by HTC, but do not let that stop you from buying it. Coming in at 8.9-inches, you get a stunning visual display, with the resolution set at 2048 x 1536. Now, this does have a 4:3 aspect ratio over the 16:9 in most Android tablets. The only big difference this really provides is more screen real estate, and who can argue with that? With a pixel density of 281ppi, you get a stunning show with this performer. Also, keep in mind that it does play 16:9 video via letterboxing.

And do not worry, what is packed in the inside is just as good as the outside. Powering this little guy is a dual-core 2.3GHz Nvidia Tegra K1, which is a 64 bit processor. To compliment that, you get a whopping 2GB of RAM and a massive 6,700 mAh battery. This guy is a powerhouse, no doubt about it, and it will run just about anything you throw at it, whether it be video, games or movies.

If you are looking to get a deal on the Nexus 9, it may be a bit difficult since everyone is trying to get to them all at once. However, you will be able to find a few deals around the Internet, specifically on Amazon and maybe even Slick Deals come Cyber Monday.

2. LG G Tab 7.0

LG G Pad 7.0 VZW

Yes, LG has their very own tablet, and their line up is actually a fairly new addition, probably to better compete with Samsung. Either way, the LG G Tab 7.0 is a tablet you will want to check out. The G Pad obviously comes with the 7-inch display, and has a resolution of 1200 x 800, which is not the best, but really you will only notice it for a few days before getting used to it. In fact, I would say it really is only a difference when watching Netflix or something. Either way, it is a beautiful screen, and is not other 7-inch tablets where the display is extremely blurry. You will be able to get some quality entertainment out of this no problem.

Under the hood, you get a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400, coming in at 1.2GHz. To compliment the processing package, you have an Adreno 305 GPU and 1GB of RAM. It is a fairly common package among budget-tablets, but I would not hesitate, it still runs apps and video like nobody’s business. You will not be disappointed in this little guy. In fact, I would not be afraid to use it to do a presentation in front of board. Sure, it could be faster, but things are still pretty slick with this little performer–I just would not attempt to play any of the high-end games with it.

If you are looking for the G Tab 7.0 this Black Friday, you will be able to find a steal on it from AT&T. If you are not an online shopper, any local electronics stores will have great deals on this guy.

3. LG G Pad 8.3

LG G Pad 8.3

Looking for something a bit more than a budget tablet? Well, the LG G Pad 8.3 is the way to go then! When it comes to the display, the G Pad 8.3 is flawless. Coming in at 1920 x 1200 resolution, you get an 8.3-inch display with a pixel density of 273ppi. It is an IPS LCD display, so color reproduction and sharpness are way above standard quality. When you throw on a movie or a video, you will notice just how flawless this display is. Games look just as good. Also, when it comes to reading the news or your favorite blog–like The Droid Guy–you will notice just how sharp the text is, thanks to the pixel density!

Under the hood, we have a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600, clocking in at a whopping 1.7GHz. To compliment it, we have a Adreno 320 GPU and 2GB of RAM. In terms of tablets, this processing package is one of the best–it is not too much, nor is it too little power. As usual, anything you throw at it this guy will be able to handle. After all, it is not likely that the average user will take up the entire 2GB of RAM. Either way, the G Pad 8.3 runs flawlessly, movies and video have little to no lag, and games play great too (this does depend on your Internet connection as well)!

If you are interested in this performer, you can get it from Amazon at a pretty good deal right now, and the price is only destined to go down as we get closer to Black Friday, and especially Cyber Monday.

4. Google Nexus 7 (2013)

With the Google Nexus 7, you obviously get a 7-inch display, and it has a 1920 x 1200 resolution. It is a Full HD 1080p display, and has a pixel density of 323ppi. It is a flawless entertainment package. If you are upgrading from an old tablet, any video or movie you throw on the Nexus 7 will look beautiful. In addition, text looks sharp and easy to read, so browsing your favorite online newspapers or blogs will be a breeze. Also, it does sport the IPS LCD display, so color reproduction is not much of a problem in this device.

Under the hood is where all the magic happens, though. In it, we have a Snapdragon S4 Pro, clocking in at 1.5GHz. With it, you get an Adreno 320 GPU and 2GB of RAM. That said, it plays games, movies, and video flawlessly. While this is perhaps not the best processing package, media consumption is still just great on this device. You will not be disappointed.

So, where can you pick up the Google Nexus 7 this Black Friday? Amazon is obviously your number one spot for a deal on this beast, but I would also keep an eye on DealNews or Woot for those spur of the moment flash sales. You could probably find it at a few local retailers, too, as they are trying to get rid of their stock in favor of the Nexus 9.

5. Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 8.9

Compared to a lot of Android tablet, the Kindle Fire may not be a favorite, but it is certainly a good tablet for media consumption. The Kindle Fire HDX actually has one of my favorite displays for media consumption. You get the 8.9-inch display with a resolution set at a whopping 2560 x 1600 pixels. In terms of pixel density, you are looking at 339ppi. Honestly, if you are looking at a device solely for media consumption, this is it. It plays movies and video beautifully, and the 8.9-inch display is the perfect size. It is the IPS LCD display, so color reproduction is a breeze. The only disappointment is the lack of an AMOLED display, as I really enjoy the deep and vibrant colors, when it comes to media consumption. A minor complaint, but it is still a great device for media.

Under the hood you get a quad core Snapdragon 800, clocked in at 2.2GHz. You get the Adreno 330 GPU and 2GB of RAM to go with it. It is one hell of a processing package. It runs anything you throw at it like a breeze. My only complaint is the lack of a Google Play Store, as you have the Amazon UI. If it had the Play Store, this device would be nearly perfect, as it would have a lot more variety than it does.

If you want to pick up this bad boy, you can do so straight from Amazon. Around the holidays, Amazon tends to put all of their stuff up for sale, so expect some really awesome sticker price slashes this Black Friday on the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9!

6. Dell Venue 7

Dell Venue 7

The Dell Venue 7 arrived in October of 2013, and is a budget performer. It is not much of a power house, however, it will get you through your everyday tasks. For a display, it’s obviously a 7-incher, and has a resolution of 1280 x 800. You get a pixel density of 216ppi with this little performer. Obviously you are not going to get any super high definition quality out of this little guy, but the Venue 7 certainly works for someone who is not looking for a whole lot. Maybe someone who just got rid of their laptop and is looking for something so that he can occasionally look at Facebook or the news once in a while.

As for the processing package, you get a dual core 1.6GHz Intel processor, and 2GB of RAM. Again, it is not the best package here, but it is certainly something that will be able to handle the everyday tasks, such as Facebook, your favorite blogs, and the occasional video. It is not to die over, but if you are on a tight budget, the Dell Venue 7 is the perfect fit.

If you are looking to pick up this little performer cheap, Amazon has a decent price on the little guy right now, and come Black Friday, it is certain to get an even better discount.

7. iPad Mini 2

Obviously, the iPad Mini is not an Android tablet, however, it is a great media consumption device. In fact, it is probably one of the best media consumption devices next to the Kindle Fire. It has the 7.9-inch display, with a resolution of 2048 x 1536. It also has a pixel density of 326ppi. When it comes to watching movies or video, things just overall look fantastic. If you are a big movie buff, and like watching on a smaller screen, the Kindle Fire or the iPad Mini is easily the way to go. Things just look great on these devices.

As for the processing package, you get Apple’s A7 processor with the 64-bit architecture. As usual for Apple, this is a very smooth processing package. You will find absolutely no lag on this device, even scrolling through a gallery of photos is smooth as can be. Usually there is a bit of a stutter in most devices, but the iPad Mini just scrolls through things like a breeze.

If you are looking to get your hands on this beast, you can grab it on Amazon, and if you wait until Cyber Monday, the iPad Mini 2 will be even cheaper. It is honestly a fantastic device.

8. Google Nexus 10

disable android navigation bar in nexus 10

The Google Nexus 10 is a bit of an older device, but it is still a high performer. Coming in at a whopping 10.1-inches, you get a resolution of 2560 x 1600 and a pixel density of 299ppi. With it, you get Gorilla Glass 2 for maximum shatter resistance. The overall quality of the display was great. Movies look great, video looks great, and games look phenomenal. Text is sharp, making for easy reading. The only downside is the lack of an AMOLED display on this guy for the deep and vibrant color reproduction.

Under the hood, we have a dual-core 1.7GHz Cortex A15 processor, 2GB of RAM, and a Mali-T604 GPU. Overall, it is a great processing package, and it is not going to disappoint you whatsoever. It runs just about anything you throw at it, though you can find some lag during scrolling or in playing higher-end games. Overall, the Nexus 10 is not a bad performer at all.

If you want to pick this beast up, it is available on Amazon, and will most likely get a price slash this coming Black Friday or Cyber Monday.  I would also keep a keen eye on some of the flash sale websites like Woot or Slick Deals.

9. Sony Xperia Tablet Z

This beast is a bit more on the expensive side, so I would not be expecting a huge deal off of this one. However, it is still a great tablet, and one of the lesser known ones, too. And that is because you usually do not see a whole lot of Sony tablets or smartphones selling directly from carriers in the United States.

Either way, it has a 10.1-inch display, with a resolution of 1200 x 1920. It has a pixel density of 224ppi. Certainly not the best, but movies, video, and general media consumption look great on this guy. I found color reproduction to be fantastic. As for a processing package, you get the quad core Snapdragon APQ8064, clocked in at 1.5GHz. With it, you get 2GB of RAM and a Adreno 320 GPU. Things run fantastic on this tablet. It is an overall great experience, but the display could be a lot better.

If you are interested in the Xperia Tablet Z, you can pick it up from Amazon this Black Friday for a great deal. Although, I would hold off until Cyber Monday, or at least keep a close eye on it during that week, as prices tend to fluctuate in terms of the sale price.

10. A quick word on the Microsoft Surface 2

Again, this is yet another non-Android tablet, however, if you are looking for what is essentially an extremely portable PC, it is probably something worth looking into. This is more on the expensive side of things, but with a 10.6-inch display, with a resolution of 1920 by 1080 and a pixel density of 208ppi, you are going to get a decent media experience. However, the processing side of things is a bit more interesting.

Not into Android games? Well, this beast can play a lot of PC games with no issue. It has a quad core 1.7GHz Cortex A15 processor, a GeForce GPU, and 2GB of RAM. In terms of RAM, I think you can add more via a USB stick. Either way, if you are more of a PC gamer or like to keep movies on your tablet, the Surface 2 is probably the way to go.

You can pick this guy up on Amazon, and of course, it will be on sale this Black Friday and Cyber Monday, just like everything else, at a decent discount.

And that concludes our Top Ten Tablet list for this Black Friday. Stay tuned with The Droid Guy, and we will have a Top 10 Budget Smartphone list for you to look out for this Black Friday! There is bound to be some great deals in that one!

Black Friday 2014 Android deals, part two – Staples, Kmart, Sam’s Club, GameStop and more

Things are heating up on the promotion front, with just one week left until the Thanksgiving Day feasts and eight days before the darkest, sweetest Friday of the year. Yes, ladies and gents, Black Friday is nigh, and in keeping with tradition, most online and offline electronics retailers have disclosed their celebratory ads.

Some are so desperate for attention they’ll organize pre-Black Friday sales this Friday, on the 21st, but for the most part, you’re advised to stay put. Good things come to those who wait, and the deals we’re about to round up are living proof you should avoid jumping the gun at all costs.

Enough jibber-jabber, and here are some of the items you Android addicts should put on your shopping lists for Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Cyber Monday and/or Christmas:

Forget office supplies and furniture, Staples is all about the gadgets this holiday season, discounting a bundle of smartwatches, phones, tablets, laptops and everything in between starting at 6 PM, next Thursday. Aka, Thanksgiving evening.

Yes, driving to a Staples store with a belly full of turkey, gravy, sweet potatoes and cider is going to be quite the challenge. But it’ll all be worth it, when summing up your savings. Just be careful to choose from the stud deals listed below, not the duds.

Best deals:

  • Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite – $99.99
  • Amazon Fire HD6 – $79
  • Fire HD7 – $109
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 – $249.99
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5 – $399.99
  • Unlocked Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini Value Edition – $99.99

Galaxy S3 Mini Value Edition

Maybe next year:

  • JLab 7-inch tablet – $39.99
  • Fitbit Zip activity tracker – $59.99
  • Fitbit One – $99.99
  • Jawbone Up – $79.99
  • Jawbone Up24 – $99.99
  • Fitbit Flex – $99.99
  • Motorola Moto 360 – $249.99

Clearly no match for arch rivals Walmart and Target, Kmart steals the spotlight by stretching out Black Friday sales a full three days. Some deals debut at 6 am, Thanksgiving morning, others at 7 pm, Thanksgiving night, then a third wave hits stores Black Friday morning, a fourth on noon next Friday, and finally, all day Saturday you can get… whatever’s left.

  • Amazon Fire HD 6 – $79.99 (plus $10 back in points for members)
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 – $149.99 (plus $20 back in points)
  • Boost Mobile LG Volt – $39.99 (a whopping 50 percent off Amazon’s current price)
  • No-contract TracFone or Net10 LG Optimus Fuel – $9.99
  • Fuhu Nabi 2 kid-friendly tablet – $149.99 (plus $50 back in membership points)
  • Prepaid Net10 LG Optimus Dynamic 2 – $19.99

  • Xtreme 7 tablet – $39.99
  • Trio Stealth G4 – $59.99
  • Zeki 8 – $89.99

Sam’s Club

Before getting to the actual promos, we’d like to remind you a member card is needed to shop at Sam’s Club. It’s wise to sign up early if you want to visit Walmart’s subsidiary on Black Friday, and buy something from their solid slate of discounts.

Galaxy Note 3

Hot deals:

  • Samsung Galaxy Note 3 – $0.96 with contracts (limit of 10 units per club)
  • Samsung Galaxy S5 – $0.96 with two-year pacts
  • Jawbone Up24 – $69.98
  • Fitbit Flex (plus additional band and charger) – $79.98

Not-so-hot deals:

  • Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 – $149
  • Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 – $249

We know we listed these two as must-buys a little earlier, but we’re thinking primarily of those who aren’t Sam’s Club members yet. And for them, going through all the trouble is just not worth it for a couple of slates available elsewhere at matching prices.

Over 4,000 stores open at midnight, November 28, and technically, offers are valid through the 30th. But who are we kidding, you’d better act fast, or all inventory will vanish until you get a chance to wake up on Thanksgiving morning.

  • Cricket Wireless HTC Desire 510 – free after $75 mail-in rebate
  • Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 – $149.99
  • Pre-owned Samsung Galaxy S5 – starting at $450
  • Asus MeMo Pad ME170CX – $79.99

  • Sophix 7 – $49.99
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite – $119.99

Toys R Us

Do your little ones a favor. If they’re into gadgets, do your Christmas shopping elsewhere. Your trip to a local Toys R Us shop is literally not worth it this Black Friday, since what’s waiting you there is a bunch of no-name, cheapo slates and a solid, overpriced Samsung.

Toys R Us

Don’t even think about it:

  • VTech InnoTab 3S Connect – $39.99
  • Polaroid 7 – $39.99
  • Polaroid 9 – $59.99
  • Kurio Touch 4S – $29.99
  • Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 Kids Edition – $129.99
  • Kurio 7S – $49.99

This computer manufacturer wants you to swing by its “Home” retail locations not once, but twice over the next ten days. They’ve announced doorbusters both for BF and Cyber Monday, with a time and inventory limit on each of the four following items:

  • Venue 7 3000 Series – $99.99 ($143 on Amazon now, so go for it)
  • Venue 8 3000 Series – $149.99 (warning, warning, must-buy on the horizon!)
  • Garmin Vivofit – $79.99 ($79.99 on Amazon now, so your argument is invalid, Dell)
  • Misfit Shine – $79.99 (discounted from… $82.99 on Amazon, so forget it)

Office Depot and OfficeMax

You’d think the holy union between these two retail veterans would allow them to set up a Black Friday yard sale for the ages. Only that’s not really the case. They have a few intriguing bargains, and doors open at 6 pm on Thanksgiving Thursday, which we appreciate. But all in all, their joint efforts come a bit short and underwhelm, compared to their separate discount work from last year.

Galaxy Tab 3 Lite

Don’t think, just buy:

  • Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite – $89.99
  • 3-inch Toshiba Chromebook – $199.99
  • Amazon Fire HD6 – $79.99

Only if you have to:

  • Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 – $149.99
  • Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 – $199.99
  • Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 – $249.99

Maybe try elsewhere:

  • Lenovo Android tablet with keyboard dock – $199.99
  • Apex 7 HD – $39.99

Dollar General

Wait, Dollar General sells Android gizmos? It would appear so, and a couple of them pop up in the variety retailer’s Black Friday catalog, next to $2.50 Pepsi 12-packs, $2 Cheetos, and $1 Chunky Soup cans. Don’t you find that hilarious?

Dollar General

We approve:

  • Net10 Motorola Moto E – $69
  • Net10 Huawei Inspira – $19

No! Just… no:

  • Generic 7-inch KitKat tablet – $40

An even bigger surprise is seeing Kohl’s squeezing a couple of Android tablets and a few Android-compatible wearables in its rich 65-page inventory of promos, including jewelry, toys, cookware, sheet sets, clothing items, clothing items and… more clothing items. Too bad the deals are crap:

  • HP G2 – $99.99
  • Zeki 7 – $49.99
  • Jawbone Up24 – $99.99
  • Fitbit Flex – $75 with $25 mail-in rebate

Shall we even go there? Fine, the HP G2 can be purchased today in exchange for $101, the Jawbone Up24 is $107, and the Fitbit Flex starts at around $92. Some “special offers” you have there, Kohl’s.

But mind you, it’s not all over yet. We’ll continue to keep an eye out for breaking Black Friday ads, and you can expect at least one update to the savings saga by Wednesday. Then, we’ll be here for you all of Thanksgiving Day, BF and Cyber Monday. Whatever happens, you can count on us for bringing a smile to your loved ones’ faces and save a few bucks in the process.

Top 10 Smartphones to Look Out For This Black Friday

The holidays are quickly on their way, with great technology deals trailing close behind. This year we have seen a countless amount of sweet gadgets, and in just a few weeks, those gadgets will be getting huge sticker price cuts! Between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the amount of money you could save is unbelievable. With all of that said, we have put together a list of 10 smartphones that are important to keep an eye on this coming Black Friday.

1. LG G3

First up on our list is LG’s new phone, the G3. It is a beautiful smartphone. Though it has a plastic backing, it is still a slick looking phone, despite a lot of the aluminum we have seen lately. One of the best parts about this phone is the screen. The display comes in at a whopping 5.5-inches, with a beautiful resolution of 2560 x 1440 and 534ppi. This screen is one of the best, no doubt. Videos play clearly, and HD movies look fantastic. One of the best things I enjoy about the screen is the lack of color saturation–everything looks pretty accurate.

When it comes the innards of this beast, you get nothing but the best. Packed with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 clocked at 2.5GHz, 2GB of RAM and an Adreno 33o GPU, this smartphone is as slick as they come. When scrolling through a gallery of photos, that’s about the only thing you’ll find lag in. With everything else–movies, games, videos, Internet browsing–things are extremely slick. This guy does not have a problem keeping up.

Keep an eye out for Black Friday deals on all of the carrier websites–AT&T, Verizon, Sprint–but keep a closer eye on Amazon, as they always have some sweet deals on the latest smartphones when it comes time for the deal season!

2. Samsung Galaxy S5

Galaxy S5 Verizon

Next up on our list is Samsung’s flagship device, the Galaxy S5. This guy comes close to quality with the G3, only it is packed with a whole lot more bloatware, which shouldn’t be a big problem for those of you the root and flash custom ROMs. There is a great chance you will be seeing all sorts of deals for the Galaxy S5, as its successor is on the way in just a couple of months here.

The Galaxy S5 is packing quite a load. Similar to the G3, it has a Snapdragon 801 processor, clocked at 2.5GHz, 2GB of RAM and a Adreno 330 GPU. You’ll find little to no lag in this device. Another great selling point is its screen. It’s a bit weaker than the G3, but it’s still rocking a Super AMOLED 108p screen with 432ppi. Looks almost just as nice as the G3, though you can notice some differences, such as the color saturation in the Super AMOLED display.

Another popular selling point with the Galaxy S5 is ts camera, and boy is it packing heat! Outfitted with a 16-megapixel sensor, the Galaxy S5 takes astonishing images. And much like most of Samsung’s flagship devices, this bad boy is outfitted with all of the camera features you could want.

I would keep an eye out for this guy on Amazon, TechBargains, and of course, AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint!

3. Samsung Galaxy Note 3

note 3

And here is one of our personal favorites, the Galaxy Note 3! Depending on where you get it from, it is not nearly as powerful as the previous two, but it is still rocking a quad-core 2.3GHz Krait processor, 3GB of RAM, and an Adreno 330 GPU. Again, while not nearly as powerful as our other contenders, the Note 3 still packs some heat.

One of our favorite parts of this device is its screen. As they always say, the bigger, the better. Packing a 5.7-inch Super AMOLED PenTile display, you’ll have no trouble kicking on a high definition movie or video. This guy will even play some of the most graphic intensive games without breaking into a sweat.

Samsung is also known for its great cameras. While it is a smaller performer than the 16-megapixel sensor on the S5, the Note 3’s 13-megapixel sensor still gets the job done. You can get some really nice pictures off of this guy. And as usual, you get Samsung’s full camera package, so be looking out for all of the camera features, too!

Another great point on this device is the 3200 mAh battery. If you’re interested in this hot seller, there are going to be some awesome black friday deals coming up for you, particularly over at Amazon, TechBargains, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon. If you’re looking to get it in-store, Best Buy and Target always have great deals going on!

4. LG G2

lg g2

Yes, we just listed the G3 on here, but some times you just cannot afford the best of the best, even on a sale. Either way, the G2 still isn’t a bad contender. Some may say its old technology now, but its still worth taking a look at, especially at the low prices you can get it at! This guy is rocking a 5.2-inch Full HD IPS LCD screen. At 1980 x 1080 and 424ppi, you will not be disappointed in the definition this little performer will give off!

It is packing a Snapdragon 800, clocked at 2.26GHz, 2GB of RAM, and an Adreno 330 GPU. It runs like a champ! And to compliment all of that, it has a 3000 mAh battery. The only downside is that it is not removable. Either way, it’ll run just about anything you put at it. However, I did notice a little lag in certain everyday tasks when I used it, but maybe that will change in the next Android OS update.

If you’re interested in this little performer, I would keep an eye out on Amazon, Best Buy, and all the carriers–AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint. Of course, if you are looking to buy this guy at full price, I wouldn’t doubt that you could get it half off this Black Friday through Woot and other flash sale websites.

5. Samsung Galaxy S4

Galaxy S4

Again, the Galaxy S4 is not a newer phone, but it is one you’ll be able to find a deal on very easily. So, what do you have to look forward to with this smartphone? Well, you get a 5-inch AMOLED display, full of deep and vibrant colours. It is, of course, not nearly as good as the G2, G3 or the Note 3, but you will still get some great quality movies and video out of it. I found reading at night to be great thanks to the AMOLED displays deep black colors. However, many prefer more “real” colors than the AMOLED’s vibrant ones, so just be aware of that.

The Galaxy S4 packs a punch with its Snapdragon 600 processor, clocking in at 1.9GHz. It also has 2GB of RAM and an Adreno 320 GPU. Don’t overlook this guy, as it will also run just about everything you throw at it. One of the best points about the Galaxy S4 is its 2600 mAh battery and battery saving features. It will definitely get you through the day, even with active use. Definitely not power use, but actively, it’ll get you home.

As usual, Samsung has its great camera package. Strapped on the back of this guy is a 13-megapixel sensor. It takes great quality images, and is complimented by Samsung’s fully featured camera app. This Galaxy S4 certainly won’t let you down.

So, where can you find it this Black Friday? Amazon, AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile are great places to start. However, I would also keep an eye on Techbargains and DealNews to search for any of those last-minute deals.

6. Moto X

Moto X 2013

Next up–the Moto X! It has been out for two years now, but it just got a second revision this year, making it even better than the first. It is a beautiful smartphone! For the display, you’re looking at 5.2-inches of high definition movie loving! Of course, it is the AMOLED display with a pixel density of 424ppi. With the AMOLED display, you get the deeper and more vibrant colors. Either way, it makes watching movies and videos a pleasant experience.

As for the processing power, you are looking at Snapdragon 801 processor, coming in at 2.5GHz. With that, you get 2GB of RAM and the Adreno 330 GPU–the full package. With all of that, you have a great smartphone in the performance realm. It makes playing movies and games a  breeze.

You probably won’t see a deal for this guy anytime soon, but if you do, it’ll probably be directly from Motorola. That said, keep an eye on for some great Black Friday deals!

7. Moto G

As for the Moto G, it’s a nice running budget phone. However, it still packs a decent punch. Packed into this guy is a quad core Snapdragon 400 processor clocked in at 1.2GHz. To compliment it, we have an Adreno 305 GPU and 1GB of RAM. Put all that together and you get a very good contender, for a budget phone. Do not expect leaps and bounds from this guy like you would the flagship hardware, but I would not underestimate it either. It will handle every general task you throw at it like a breeze, however, it could really use that extra gig of RAM–you can really notice a difference.

On the other hand, it has a great display. You get a 4.5-inch LCD HD display, coming in with a pixel density of 326ppi. It is a nice screen, but with the smaller display and drop in resolution, it would not be my go-to device for catching up on Netflix or your YouTube lineup. However, it is not that bad either!

Either way, the Moto G is still a budget phone, so if you are looking for a drastic deal, it is just not going to happen. However, you will still get something, as Motorola ( is more than likely to cut the sticker price for this coming Black Friday! I would also keep an eye out on all the carriers as well, as they are likely to follow suit–AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile, specifically.

8. Amazon Fire Phone

Amazon Fire Phone

And here we come to Amazon’s newly released, Fire Phone. There has been a lot of flack around this phone, mostly because of the pricing it started out at. However, for those looking for a steal, this Amazon Fire Phone is still a great buy. Under the hood we have a quad core Krait 400 clocking in at 2.2GHz, 2GB of RAM, and an Adreno 330 GPU. It seems like quite a bit for a mid-range smartphone, but the Fire Phone runs like a champion. It plays movies, video, and games smoothly. You will not miss a beat with this little performer.

As for the display, you have your standard 4.7-inch IPS LCD display, with a resolution of 720 x 1080 and a pixel density of 312ppi. Obviously not the best in the display department, but things still look generally nice. A higher pixel density would have helped the Fire Phone a lot, but again, it does not look bad.

Probably the highlight of the Fire Phone is its 13-megapixel sensor. You can take some quick and nice shots with this beast. This is not really a Black Friday deal, but since the smartphone ran for $199 on-contract, it is worth throwing this in and saying that there has been a reduction across the board. If you are looking to get that special someone the Fire Phone this holiday season, you can now pick the Fire Phone up at the low price of $0.99 on-contract through any carrier–AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, and Amazon!

9. Samsung Galaxy Note 4

Galaxy Note 4

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is a real beast. Sporting a quad core Krait 450, clocked in at 2.7GHz, the Galaxy Note 4 does not miss a beat. To compliment this hardware, we have 3GB of RAM and an Adreno 420 GPU. Obviously this is a lot of power for a smartphone, but it fits the Note 4 perfectly. It will handle just about anything–from something as little as movies to as big as a 50-slide presentation in front of an executive board.

As for the display, it has a massive 5.7-inch display, with a resolution of 1440 x 2560. It has a beautiful pixel density of 517ppi, which compliments the smartphone immensely. As with most Samsung phones, you get the Super AMOLED screen, so a lot of the colors are very deep and vibrant, which is perfect if you are a big entertainment buff.

Another great highlight of this smartphone is its camera. The Galaxy Note 4 is touting a whopping 16-megapixel sensor. As you might expect with a sensor that big, you get some very high quality photos. No need to see a professional photographer anymore! As usual, you get the fully-featured camera app to go with it, so you have a lot of options available to you.

You will be able to find this smartphone on sale this coming Black Friday and Cyber Monday on Amazon. It is not likely that the carriers will have their own sale on this beast until we get closer to Christmas or a little while after Christmas, if last year is anything to go by.

10. Nexus 6

Nexus 6

Unfortunately, we probably will not see the Nexus 6 on sale at all this year. After all, it is not on sale until the end of November. That said, Google probably will not be presenting any special offers. However, the smartphone is a great holiday gift. The Nexus line has always been far above expected quality and will not let you down. So, if you are willing to pay full price for this beast, keep an eye on Google Play Store this month, and you might just be lucky enough to snag one for that special someone for Christmas.

For a quick rundown, it has a quad core Snapdragon 805, clocked in at a speedy 2.7GHz. With it, you get 3GB of RAM and an Adreno 450 GPU. That’s not the only thing that should impress you, as it is equipped with a 13-megapixel sensor and a 5.96-inch AMOLED display. With a 1440 x 2560 resolution and a pixel density of 493ppi, you will only be getting quality out of this beast.

There are going to be some sweet deals come this Black Friday and Cyber Monday, so I would be on the lookout for smartphones we have not listed, such as the Galaxy Edge. As you know, just about everything you can think of goes on sale about this time of year, so keep your eyes pealed for more. Make sure to stay tuned on The Droid Guy, as we will be cooking up some more sweet deal articles for our readers!

Must resist the urge to buy Android gear prior to the ceremonial holiday shopping season kickoff. You must do it. No matter how badly you may need a new phone or tablet, or how lucrative early deals on various retailers may look.

Black Android

They’re nothing compared to what’s coming, and savings currently offered are peanuts. Black Friday is the biggest shopping day of the year for a reason, and Android is an integral part of that. Besides, we’re just three weeks away.

We can almost feel the rush. See it, touch it. And to further incentivize you to wait, we’ve rounded up ten uber-attractive Android devices we have every reason to believe will get slapped with phenomenal discounts for Black Friday 2014. Or Cyber Monday, same thing.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Currently available for: $470 in factory unlocked flavor; $100 with Verizon and Sprint contracts; $150 with AT&T pacts

Why it’s a must-buy:

Do we need to spell it out for you? Fine. The Note 3 may be old, but it’s not decrepit. Not even close. It’s full-plastic, but it feels amazing in the hand, the Full HD display isn’t devastating for battery life, and the 3 gigs of RAM are still the highest smartphones have ever gone to.

Galaxy Note 3

How low could it go:

eBay has an ongoing deal that looks hard to beat for the unlocked variant, although we wouldn’t be surprised to see Amazon lower the bar to $300. Meanwhile, it’s time carriers stopped charging Note 3 buyers for the on-contract phablet. Mark my words, you will be able to pick up the 5.7 incher for no upfront fee in a matter of weeks.

Samsung Galaxy S5

Galaxy S5 Verizon

  • Up for grabs at $508 unlocked; $80 with Verizon, Sprint and AT&T contracts
  • Younger than the Note 3, the S5 doesn’t look it, and in the absence of promotions, no one’s interested in it any longer. But at the right price, you’ll start to appreciate the quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor, 16 MP rear camera and water-resistant exterior.
  • $400 unlocked? It’s a near-guarantee. $350? It’s possible. $300? That’s a bit of a stretch. With carrier agreements, we have no doubt the $80 charge will be scrapped ASAP.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 4

  • $156 for the 7 incher; $219 in 8-inch configuration; $280 with 10 inches of screen real estate
  • They’re nowhere near as beefy and bright as members of the Tab S family, but they’re light, sleek and offer decent punch for what we think the costs will be come Black Friday.
  • We wouldn’t stake the house on this, but it’s not impossible to see the Tab 4 7.0 go for $100. Samsung is that desperate. Meanwhile, a sub-$200 price tag for the 8 incher is probably a safe bet, and so is sub-$250 for the Tab 4 10.1.

Moto X (original)

Moto X 2013

  • Starting at $280 unlocked with US warranty; $0.01 with Verizon, AT&T and Sprint contracts
  • No prizes for guessing why no one even remembers the first-gen X. But second-gen comparison aside, this upper mid-ranger ain’t half bad. It’s got near-stock KitKat, Lollipop on the way, healthy battery life and 2 gigs of RAM
  • Obviously, there’s no more room to discount the on-contract X. But unlocked, you could pay as little as $200 soon enough. That’s crazy cheap… if it pans out.

Sony Xperia Z1 Compact

Xperia Z1 Compact

  • Starting at $365 factory unlocked with no warranty
  • The little flagship that could is yesterday’s news for power users, but it remains the all-around best handheld of that footprint. 4.3 inches still hits the sweet spot for some, and the 20.7 MP camera is a-mazing.
  • A penny under $300 would be a dream come true. We don’t see that happening, ever, but if it does, forget about the no-warranty qualms. Go for it, no questions asked, no hesitation.

HTC One M8

HTC One M8

  • $698 factory unlocked with US warranty; $50 with AT&T and Sprint pacts; $100 on Verizon
  • For an aging flagship that, as far as we’re aware, isn’t selling so hot, the M8 is sure expensive. That’s why we think it’s going to get massively discounted, and become the must-buy it never was. Power users have better options around, but very few are as robust and elegant as the all-metal One M8.
  • Make it zero with carrier agreements, HTC, and $500 tops outright and you’ll get your financials in order in no time.

LG/Google Nexus 5

  • $342 factory unlocked
  • Google insists N6’s launch won’t impact N5’s sales, since the two phones are so different. True, but at the same time, the world has forgotten the Nexus 5. The best way to refresh our memory? Slash the price to $250, update the software to Lollipop, and further improve battery life over-the-air. Do that, Big G, and we’ll remember the 5-inch Full HD screen is a whopper, and so is the quad-core 2.3 GHz Snapdragon 800 processor.

Asus/Google Nexus 7 2013

  • $176 in 16 GB Wi-Fi only config; $239 with 32 GB storage; starting at $250 with Verizon LTE
  • Another Nexus that shouldn’t suffer from the recent upgrade/lineup overhaul, but that’s due for a price cut nonetheless. Temporary, permanent, we don’t care. Just make it $150 with Wi-Fi, $200 with Verizon pacts, and $300 tops in LTE-enabled form outright. Remember, this tiny thing packs quite a punch, and sports a breathtaking 1,920 x 1,200 pix res LCD screen. Oh, and it’s got Lollipop incoming.

LG G Pad 8.3

LG G Pad 8.3

  • $249 with Wi-Fi; $99 with Verizon LTE and contracts, $300 outright on Big Red
  • It’s old, it’s out of fashion, it’s glossy and plasticky. But man, is that design an ageless knockout, with those deliciously slim bezels and all. The display is just as vibrant as the one on the N7 2013, plus larger, and the quad-core Snapdragon 600 SoC should decently hold its own in everything from gaming to heavy web browsing.
  • Want me to venture a wild guess? Verizon will soon offer this thing for a penny on-contract. And $200 or so outright. Don’t take my word for it though, and keep your eyes peeled on Amazon.

Huawei Ascend Mate 2

Huawei Ascend Mate 2

  • $300 factory unlocked with US warranty
  • No, no, we haven’t gone mad. We’re well aware the Mate 2 isn’t going to score KitKat goodies, let alone Lollipop treats. But what’s so bad about Jelly Bean? Let me rephrase. What’s so bad about Jelly Bean on a gigantic 6.1 incher with 720p screen resolution, 4G LTE connectivity, 2 gigs of RAM, an incredible 4,050 mAh battery and selfie-friendly 5 MP front camera?
  • Do we hear $250? $250 going once, going twice, sold to… every budget-conscious Android enthusiast with half a brain.

Before leaving you to it, in case you haven’t caught on, this is just the first in a long line of Black Friday-dedicated articles coming in the next few weeks. The actual deals will start leaking out soon, and as we did last year, we’ll be covering them extensively to help you decide what to shop and how to save the most dough. Keep in touch.

Cyber Monday: Motorola runs out of inventory of the Moto X within 10 minutes, again

Moto XIn an almost repeat of what happened on Wednesday, the off contract Moto X being sold through the Moto Maker site has sold out within a matter of minutes. Just as we warned you earlier to get there before anyone else, the device has gone out of stock before most people got a chance, which was much expected. Motorola was offering the off contract Moto X with a flat $150 discount to users lucky enough to have gone through with the process.

The smartphone clearly is one of the best bang for the buck devices out there and as Motorola slashed the prices as part of its extended Cyber Monday deals, it was inevitable that the demand would surge to such an extent. Unfortunately for the ones who missed out, this was the only chance to get the smartphone off contract for that cheap, so this will be very disappointing. However, with the holiday season approaching and the kind of demand there has been for the Moto X, we might just see a new deal for the off contract customized Moto X. It’s the holidays after all, so anything can happen.

Motorola’s second wave of extended Cyber Monday sale kicks off at noon today

Motorola Cyber Monday

Motorola Cyber MondayMotorola’s Cyber Monday promotions last week went awry when the server overload restricted users from placing an order for their beloved Moto X. So in order to make amends for the time lost, Motorola promised to extend the deal over two days. One of them being this past Wednesday when the Moto X was sold out in about 9 minutes and the other being today the 9th of December. So if you missed out on Wednesday, now is your chance to get the off contract Moto X from the carrier of your choice with a $150 discount, which effectively brings the pricing to $349.99 and $399.99 for the 16 and 32GB variants respectively.

To avoid what happened on Wednesday, users are advised to head over to the Motorola website and add their email address as soon as possible so that they could get the promo code which will waive $150 off the asking price. There’s only a certain amount of Moto X smartphones allotted for this promotion, so not everybody will be lucky. And since it’s being given away on a first come first served basis, it won’t hurt to get there early.
