Samsung Galaxy S5 vs HTC One M8 – price comparison (US, Canada, UK)

Equally as speedy, pretty much even in the build quality department and each featuring top-shelf audio, imaging, battery or software add-ons such as BoomSound, Dual Camera, Ultra Power Saving Mode or Air gestures, Samsung’s Galaxy S5 and HTC’s One M8 are nearly impossible to separate on paper.

HTC-One-M8-vs-Galaxy-S5

Most reviewers say it’s incredibly hard to choose one or the other after getting in contact with them, so at the end of the day the epic battle for high-end Android supremacy this quarter, nay half a year may come down to availability and pricing.

Needless to point out Samsung is far superior advertising-wise, however HTC already managed to roll out the M8 ahead of the GS5, so if the Taiwanese can also position their flagship as the cost-friendly alternative for the odds-on favorite, they might well challenge the throne.

Samsung-Galaxy-S5-vs-One-M8

Could they pull it off? Only one way to find out. Scour the interwebs for the best HTC One (M8) and Samsung Galaxy S5 deals available. Here’s what we dug up in US, Canada and UK:

US on-contract prices and release dates

Technically, our two contenders were bound to start things off on equal footing. But HTC sensed the danger almost instantaneously and shaved a cool $50 off M8’s price with select pacts in the blink of an eye. Thus, the 2014 One can now be purchased via Amazon at $150 as long as you don’t mind committing to lengthy 24-month Verizon or Sprint agreements.

A similar promotion is in full swing over at Best Buy, though the retailer offers just the Verizon M8 at $150. The Sprint and AT&T variants cost 50 clams north, as does the AT&T flavor on Amazon and through the carrier’s own retail network, both on and offline.

HTC M8 Amazon

Searching the ideal Easter present? Why not HTC One M8? Get two from Verizon, and the second is free. Full disclosure: two separate contracts need to be signed.

Beyond the few bucks Amazon and BB allow you to save when boarding the M8 bandwagon, the coolest thing is there are no lines, staggered deliveries or shipping delays, unlike with the GS5. Samsung’s bad boy is technically still on pre-order and the first units will be dispatched beginning Friday, April 11.

Galaxy S5 Amazon

Sprint and AT&T’s locked variants are $190 on Amazon, $200 via Best Buy with $10 gift cards, and $200 when purchased directly from the Now Network and Ma Bell, albeit the former can go as low as $0 for upgrading qualifying customers with Framily Plans.

Still, I reckon it’s point HTC here.

Galaxy S5 vs One M8 – US outright, unlocked pricing

Not a fan of contracts? Then it’s straight to T-Mobile for you. The “UnCarrier” has both smartphones at $0 down, or rather, it’s going to have them starting April 11. Yes, the M8 is bizarrely not around at T-Mo.

HTC M8 box

If coughing up half a dozen Benjamins at once ain’t a problem, Amazon, Best Buy, AT&T, Sprint, Verizon and Negri Electronics are at your disposal. Here’s how their offers break down one by one:

Amazon: unlocked 3G-only Galaxy S5 – $775, shipping April 11; no-warranty Latin version – $745, in stock; no-warranty factory unlocked model – $750, in stock; off-contract Sprint version – $700; off-contract AT&T – $700.

Factory unlocked HTC One M8 with US warranty – $700 in grey, $704 in silver; M8 Developer Edition – $700, ships in 2 to 4 weeks; AT&T, Verizon, Sprint versions – $650

Best Buy: AT&T, Verizon, Sprint Samsung Galaxy S5 outright variants – $750; No-contract MetroPCS with 4G LTE – $650

HTC One M8 for AT&T – $700; Verizon version – $750; for Sprint – $800

Galaxy S5 Verizon

AT&T: Samsung Galaxy S5 – $650; HTC M8 – $640

Sprint: Galaxy S5 – $650; One M8 – $650

Verizon: GS5 – $600; All New HTC One – $600

Negri Electronics: Unlocked Latin American Galaxy S5 models in white and black – $720.50 on pre-order

16 GB unlocked HTC One M8 in silver, gold and grey – $812.50 a pop (grey units in stock, silver and gold on pre-order)

Samsung Galaxy S5 and HTC One M8 – UK prices

So many things to say, so little time to cover them all. Where to start? Let’s take a virtual trip down Amazon UK lane first. The SIM-free One M8 is £529.95 there (already discounted from £549), in both grey and silver. No gold? Bummer.

HTC M8 colors

Meanwhile, the GS5 is listed as coming on April 18 (i.e. next Friday), costing an extra 30 quid or so. Total price: £559.99 in black, blue and white contract-free.

Surprise, surprise, the S5 is cheaper with Clove than the M8, going for £522, including VAT. HTC’s giant? £534. How about Unlocked-Mobiles? Well, they do promise swift deliveries beginning April 10, but folks on tight budgets are likely to pick the in-stock M8. It’s £528.98 vs. £549.98, the GS5.

Alright, let’s do one last British online store. Expansys? Expansys it is. Like most of their competitors, they’re in a position to ship the HTC One M8, but not the GS5. The former is £550 in grey and silver, and the latter £560 in black, white, blue and gold. It looks like Samsung may need to rethink strategy before it’s too late.

galaxy-s5-colors

Oh, by the by, you can always score the two heavyweight title contenders with pacts on British shores paying nada upfront. Just remember plans might be fairly steep for the obligatory two years.

Canada pricing and availability

O Canada, how I wish I had better news for you vis-à-vis the GS5. Instead, all I can tell you is a bundle of carriers, Rogers, Bell and Telus included, are taking pre-orders, vowing to zippy deliveries around April 10. Pricing is equally as ominous, at $250 with contracts, compared to the One M8, which ships already and costs $230 on a 2-year term, or $700 outright.

HTC-One-M8-vs-Samsung-Galaxy-S5

It’s official, Samsung is losing this battle. Will the Koreans lose the war too? You tell us. Do you intend to get the M8 or GS5? Will you instead hold out for Sony’s Xperia Z2? Maybe LG’s G3? Google’s Nexus 6? Samsung’s Galaxy Note 4? So many options, huh?

Earlier this month Sony announced that it would soon be releasing the Sony Xperia E1 which is the company’s successor to last year’s Xperia E model. Details of the device were provided then but what was left out was its pricing and availability. We have recently learned that this device has already been placed on pre-order in the UK and German Amazon sites.

xperia e1

Amazon UK lists the pre-order price of the Xperia E1 at £149.99. This is for the white version of the device and will be sold SIM-free. The expected release date is March 10.

Those living in the UK can also get the device from Clove which is offering it at a cheaper price of £134.99 (VAT included). This does not however include free shipping and the price is not officially set yet so there is a possibility that it will change.

The Amazon German site lists the pre-order price at €139.00. It also comes in three colors namely black, violet, and white. A dual-SIM version of the device called the Xperia E1 Dual is also available and costs an additional €10 or €149.99. No release date has been provided in this site.

The loudspeaker is rated at 100db and comes with Sony’s xLOUD sound enhancement engine. There’s also ClearAudio+ and Clear Bass technology which combines to deliver a crystal clear sound quality.

As an added bonus consumers who will get this device will also be provided with a 50GB free storage from Box which can be used forever. The Box Android app must be downloaded first on the device and an account must be created on or before December 31, 2014 to avail of this offer.

UK retailer puts up the LG G2 up for pre order

LG G2

The recently launched LG G2 has managed to take the world markets by storm, but the pricing wasn’t confirmed so far. However, that riddle has been solved now with UK retailer Clove putting up the handset for pre-order. The price for the 16GB variant has been quoted as £468 ($723) which includes VAT. Smartphones listed on Clove are always unlocked, so this will give us a brief idea of the retail pricing of the LG G2 globally.

When we compare the prices of the G2 with most flagships at the time of the launch, the G2 seems like a reasonable deal, which could be crucial in its success. However, Clove mentions that the price hasn’t been confirmed yet, which means there is a strong possibility of the quoted price shooting up. The smartphone is expected to arrive by late September.

The LG G2 will arrive in the U.S on all major carriers by the end of this month, while international variants could take slightly longer depending on the region. The smartphone packs a 5.2 inch Full HD IPS panel, a 2.26 GHz Snapdragon 800 chip, 2GB of RAM, 16 and 32GB of storage variants, a 13MP rear camera, a 2.1MP front facing camera, a beefy 3,000 mAh battery and Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.

This is a Bluetooth enabled tracking device which was trademarked earlier this year and can easily be attached to your keys, bags, or any similar object.

A person can also manually activate the beeping alert from their smartphone app to make it easier to search for the lost item at home or at work. You can even attach it to your smartphone so as to easily find it if it’s lost.

One other feature that’s interesting is that it has a remote shutter function. This makes it easy for you to position your smartphone in a certain area and have it take photos even if you are not near your device.

BlackBerry Z10 Available This March Unlocked From Clove

The BlackBerry Z10 made its first appearance to the major operators in the UK last January 31. Those who got the device did so by signing long contracts with their respective carriers. Those planning to get the device now have the option to get it unlocked and sim free this coming March 1.

BlackBerry Z10 Unlocked Clove

Clove has just announced that they will be offering the BlackBerry Z10 on the first day of March as an unlocked device at £445.00 (£534.00 including VAT) or roughly $828.82. Initially only the black model will be made available under this offer with the white model coming along soon.

People living in the US who can’t wait to get their hands on the Z10 and who will be in the UK this March might want to consider getting this as this latest flagship smartphone hasn’t been released in the US yet. The device is expected to hit the US market at the later part of March however T-Mobile has hinted that it may come earlier than that.

The advantage of getting an unlocked version of the BlackBerry Z10 is that you will be able to use it on any compatible mobile network. People who travel a lot will make huge savings on phone bills since they won’t need to use the roaming features instead just buy a local prepaid SIM of the country they are visiting.

The BlackBerry Z10 is the first flagship smartphone of the company since the previous model released 18 months ago. What you will first notice is the all touch user interface. It also sports the latest operating system of the company which is the BlackBerry OS 10 based on the QNX platform.

Samsung Ativ S Will Launch in the UK and Canada Beginning From Today

ativ-s-2

The Samsung Ativ S has managed to surprise us all with its mystery presence in Austria a couple of days ago. After Austria, it was pretty obvious that other countries would follow suit. And we are now hearing that the company is announcing the device in Canada and the UK to be available by today or tomorrow i.e. by 14th December. So that should pretty much be the first second wave of launch, with more countries including a few in Asia to follow suit. Samsung’s home turf South Korea will have a lot of following for the Ativ S. Canadian carrier TELUS will have the device in limited quantities apparently, while Bell is slated to get it on the 14th. Both the carriers have set an attractive contract pricing of $100 for the Ativ S.

Now for the unlocked prices of the Ativ S in the UK. The handset is being made available in the region via online retailers Clove, Expansys and Unlocked-Mobile. Clove has set a pricing of £442.80 ($714 approx) while Expansys has the device for slightly more at £459.99($742). The cheapest of the lot however is Unlocked-Mobile which is selling the Ativ S for £424.98($686). Say what you will, but the device is certainly not priced to compete with Samsung’s Android offerings. The prices are almost on par with the Galaxy Note II, which is Samsung’s current Android flagship, so not sure if the company has got it right with the pricing. It is hoped that the company will drop prices as Christmas comes closer and the New Year approaches. As of now, the Ativ S is certainly not going easy on the customers’ wallets. Retailers are selling the 16GB variant of the Ativ S currently with no info on a larger storage variant. But that shouldn’t be much of an issue as the device sports a microSD card slot which can take cards of up to 32GB.

We should applaud Samsung for the sense of urgency it showed with the launch of this WP8 flagship. Despite reports of delay in launch, Samsung didn’t seem to bother much and launched the device earlier than expected. Let’s hope the roll out continues and reaches other remote countries as well. The Ativ S follows closely in the footsteps of the Samsung Galaxy S III, in terms of hardware specs that is. So if there are any GS3 users planning to try out WP8, this should be the first choice. It will be interesting to see if the device will make any noise in the WP8 arena with the Lumia 920 and the HTC 8X well set in the market.

The HTC Explorer has a 600mhz processor, 512mb of RAM, and a 3.2 inch HVGA capacitive touch screen. It will be running the latest version of Android 2.3.5 and the latest version of HTC’s proprietary UI, Sense 3.5.

Acer Iconia 501 With 3G/4G Available Now In UK

Back in March AT&T announced that it would bring the Acer Iconia 501 tablet with 3G/4G capability to it’s network this summer. Hopefully we will see it before September 22, 2011.  In the meantime though, UK third party retailer Clove has started to sell the cellular equipped Acer Iconia tablet.

The Acer Iconia is one of the more popular Honeycomb Android tablets. One of the big advantage the Acer brings to the table is it’s onboard USB host slot that allows you to connect USB peripheral devices and even hard drives to the tablet. The Toshiba Thrive also have a host USB port as well.  The other more popular Android tablets, the Motorola Xoom and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 don’t feature a USB host port. Although Samsung has an adapter you can purchase that will allow you to connect USB devices.
