Fix Facebook app that doesn’t update feed on Samsung Galaxy S6 after Marshmallow update

  • #Facebook app stopped updating its feed on the #Samsung Galaxy S6 (#GalaxyS6) after the #Marshmallow update.

Facebook’s official app is among the applications that seem to have trouble pulling updates after the Marshmallow update for the Samsung Galaxy S6. I included a couple of problems below that best describe the issue.

Q: “Facebook feed isn’t updating since the update. Only when you close the app and re-open, still then it take a few tries. My emails are not syncing since the update. Only when you close the app and re-open but previously you could just pull down and it would sync.

A: If you haven’t changed any settings after the update and these problems occurred, then it must have been the system cache that got corrupted. Delete the cache to force the new system to create new ones. Follow these steps…

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, and Power key.
  3. When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
  4. When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
  5. Press the Volume Down key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  6. Press the Power key to select.
  7. When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  8. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Q: “Somehow icons and graphics from apps are getting saved to my phone. I have a photo I can show you if you email me. Literally hundreds of icons, graphics, and small videos are hidden in my phone. Every time I backup photos from my phone to my computer, at least a hundred app related images transfer over, mostly from Podcast Addict. However, the images are not visible in my gallery, they only show up when I sync. I’m not sure what is happening, but I believe it is causing my phone to become overloaded and crash. My apps will not stay open. I will disclose that I did drop my phone in water for a few seconds a few months ago and I did the rice trick, but this was happening prior to that. Would you be able to take a look into why this would be happening? It’s extremely obnoxious and I’m worried I have a bug in my computer. Thanks!

A: I think liquid damage has nothing to do with it although we really can’t pinpoint the cause why this is happening. I don’t know how many apps are doing this and where they’re saving their thumbnails but if only you can locate the folder, you can easily delete those thumbnails. Every app does save caches on your phone’s storage including thumbnails. In fact, even advertisements do that. There’s nothing much to it and I don’t think thumbnails could do more harm to your phone but then even thumbnails uses up storage. So, find them and delete all of them.

Q: “I want to update my apps through the Google Play Store, but do it on WiFi.  For some reason, the apps won’t update and I get an error that it could not update the app.  It does not matter which app.  However, I can update apps over the network. I have rebooted my phone and tried to update one of the apps on WiFi and it still would not allow updating.

A: Verify if you can connect to the internet over Wi-Fi. Try browsing some websites or download apps from the Play Store. I understand you can’t update but you never mentioned about not being able to download and install apps. If you can neither browse nor download apps, then the problem isn’t with your phone but with your Wi-Fi connection.

However, if you’ve verified your phone has an active internet connection and this problem occurs, then it’s time you did the master reset but make sure you backed up all your data before following the steps below:

  1. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S6.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up, Home and Power keys together.
  3. When the device powers on and displays ‘Power on logo’, release all keys and the Android icon will appear on the screen.
  4. Wait until the Android Recovery Screen appears after about 30 seconds.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, highlight the option, ‘wipe data/factory reset’ and press the Power key to select it.
  6. Press the Vol Down button again until the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted and then press the Power key to select it.
  7. After the reset is complete, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key to restart the phone.

Q: “Facebook keeps saying cannot connect right now, but when i close apps and restart, facebook works for a while then does the same thing. News feeds do not update. Messenger also states it is connecting then works, but then starts connecting again, when there is plenty of service from wifi and mobile data. I then close the app and restart and it works, temporarily.

A: It’s difficult for us to determine what the problem with your phone is and considering you didn’t provide us with sufficient information, we even can’t assume the issue here. Just backup your data and do the factory reset and see if that works.

Q: “The only issue I am having is with my YouTube app. It will not play videos in the app, only on the Web browser. It always says “connection to server lost, tap to retry,” so I tried restarting my device, which didn’t work. I found online that your proxy settings should be on none, which mine are, but I changed them and then changed them back to make sure. As my last attempt to fix it, I uninstalled youtube, and now it will not reinstall. It gives me the error code 495 when I try to re-download it.

A: This problem has been happening to a lot of users recently and the good thing about common problems is that some already found solutions or workarounds. So, for this, try removing your Google account first, reboot your phone and set it up again. After that, try downloading or updating your apps. If the problem still persists, try the following:

  1. From any Home screen, tap Apps.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Scroll to ‘APPLICATIONS,’ then tap Application manager.
  4. Swipe right to the ALL screen.
  5. Scroll to and tap Google Play Store.
  6. Tap Clear cache.
  7. Tap Clear data, then OK.

This should do it.

If you’re an owner of the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge or any Android smartphone for that matter, you must have encountered issues regarding some of your apps may it be a minor crash, freezes, lags or more complicated problems that may affect the general performance of your device.

In this post, I will address some of the problem we received from our readers including an issue with Bitmoji wherein the user said she can no longer attach avatars to her text messages. The thing about these problems is that they may be caused by the app itself, other apps or the firmware. You can only fix the problem, or at least get rid of the app that’s causing it, if you’ve successfully ruled out one issue at a time.

Q: “I have installed the Bitmoji avatar app, I have followed the troubleshooting steps sent by the company and still nothing.  When I go to attach the bitmoji to a text message it says “unable to attach file”, but it attaches to group me, WhatsApp, Facebook, etc. Not sure what’s wrong. I’ve reset,  changed the keyboard and changed the app. Nothing fixes it.

A: There are a lot of people who encountered this problem. Most of them said that they were able to use the app and attach bitmojis to their text until recently. Most of those that complained are Galaxy owners, which made us to believe that it’s a firmware related problem since many of the reports indicate they recently updated their device and then this problem happened.

Assuming it’s a firmware-related problem, it can’t be fixed until Samsung rolls out another update or Bitmoji’s developer releases another update to also address it. However, to rule out the possibility that it’s just an app issue, try these things:

  1. Close Bitmoji and open it again.
  2. Try to see via Play Store if there’s an update available for the app and install it.
  3. Clear it’s cache and data.
  4. Uninstall and reinstall it.

Q: “My phone tells me I have 33 galaxy updates available but when I go to the update page there are only 2 apps that need updates. I updated them and the next day it tells me I have 33 updates available.

A: Are you seeing a notification or a webpage? If it was the latter that’s prompting you, it might be an ad or something that tells you to download something once you visit the page. As you said, you already found out there were only 2 updates and if by “galaxy updates” you meant Samsung apps, then there would be 33 of them in your phone. You may also try to open Play Store and go to My Apps page and see if there are apps that need updating. Once you’ve done that and you’re seeing that same notification, then it really must be an ad.

If it were a notification, however, just make sure you updated every app and then clear the cache partition to get rid of old caches:

  1. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  4. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  6. Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
  7. Now highlight the option ‘Yes’ using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
  8. Wait until your phone is finished wiping the cache partition. Once completed, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and press the Power key.
  9. The phone will now reboot longer than usual.

Q: “New phone. When adding my existing Google account, I enter the Gmail email address and press next. Does not reach the next screen to enter a password. Same if I try to use the same screen to create a new account instead. I’ve tried factory reset, and have disabled 2 factor authentication.

A: Apparently, it’s a firmware issue and the only thing you can do about it is have it replaced with a new one while you still can. There’s no point in troubleshooting a brand new phone that already has an issue out of the box.

Q: “My phone is set to only backup it’s pics and info at night over WiFi.  Instead, it is syncing about every three minutes. I’ve don’t everything I know to do and followed instruction after instruction online. Thank you so much for creating this forum, you’ve helped me with several phones already! Please let me know your thoughts, Christine.

A: If you’re using Google Photos to manage your pictures and backups, I don’t think it has an option to schedule the backup process, although you can set it to backup only when on Wi-Fi or mobile data. If you’re connected to mobile data most of the day and only has access to Wi-Fi at night, then you just have to check if the Photos app is allowed to backup pictures even over mobile data. You need to change that to just Wi-Fi.

On the other hand, if you’re using a different app, as much as we can, we really can’t help you simply because we don’t have a clue what app it is.

Q: “2 Questions/Deal breakers.

  1. How to move to the next unread message after deleting an email, instead of returning to the inbox every single time.
  2. How to make the screen rotation to continuously scroll like on the S5. (Scrolling from page 1 to page 5 without having to go all the way left).

A: As to the email issue, there’s no setting that would allow you to automatically move (open) to the next unread message after deleting one. You’ll be brought to the inbox to view the headers of other messages regardless whether they’re read or unread.

About the other issue, if you meant the continuous scrolling, such feature no longer exist on the S7 variants. Samsung took it away for some reason, although, I myself found it useful.

Problem 1: Galaxy S7 edge won’t turn on after it was immersed in water

I bought a new Samsung Galaxy S7 edge one week ago. Everything was alright. on the 3rd day i wanted to test the water resistance of my phone. So i put it inside a bucket of water and kept it there for 2 min. After bringing out the phone from water, it was turned off and i could not turn that on though it was having enough charge. It took 2 more days to charge the phone because due to low temperature it was not charging. Now the problem is my touch screen is not responding at all. Besides it keeps on auto restarting after several minutes. Now , if you kindly give me an effective suggestion, how can i get the sensitivity of touchscreen back and solve the issue. Solution: Hi Md Ainun Nishat. First of all, water resistance is different from water proof. Your S7 is water resistant it’s not fully water proof. Delineating between water resistance and water proof is not the goal of this post so we suggest that you follow this link for a better explanation.

An extra pressure in the water bucket must have forced some moisture into the phone causing it to act erratically afterwards. We recommend that you treat this problem like a regular water-damaged phone. That said, you should contact Samsung so the hardware can be checked for errors. Better still, simply have the phone replaced.

And next time, always remember that there’s no such thing as water proofed electronics even if marketing videos show otherwise. Never overestimate your phone when it comes to water or moisture exposure.

Problem 2: Galaxy S7 camera app keep crashing after repair

My Samsung Galaxy S7 recently went in for servicing after it spontaneously ‘bricked’ itself. Samsung replaced the motherboard for free. The phone works fine but the camera app is not. I can record videos, I can see the preview image (hence the physical camera is fine), but as soon as I take a picture, I get a message ‘Warning, Unknown error occurred’, the phone freezes and immediately reboots. I think the camera is fine because when I enter the phone’s HwModuleTest, the Mega cam can take photos fine without any crashes or reboots. Sometimes, when I ‘force stop’ the camera app, and clear the camera app’s data and cache, I can take photos fine for a short time, and then it will crash and reset the phone after a while. This problem happens with both the front and back cameras. Problem occurs also with third-party camera apps. I have also reset the phone to factory to no avail. I would appreciate any fix you can recommend for this. Thanks for your time and any assistance you can provide. — Exhtee

Solution: Hi Exhtee. Camera app is a pre-installed app and must work fine after a factory reset. There are no other means to tweak the app’s codes to see what’s wrong with it. Apparently, the problem is not software-related because factory reset did not change anything. You must contact Samsung again so the phone can be replaced entirely, or the camera app issue resolved.

Problem 3: Wet Galaxy S7 losing battery power faster than normal

My phone accidentally got wet while I was washing the dishes but I wasn’t worried at all because they said it’s water resistant and water proof. I dried the phone and realized my touch sensor lights aren’t on so I can’t change tabs or go back. I’m wondering if water got into the phone. When I tried blowing into the charging port and shaking some water out, my battery life decreased dramatically in seconds and died. I had to fully charge it but my sensors were still not working. Is there any way I can fix this? — Joshua

Solution: Hi Joshua. If your phone was working normally before you got it wet, you can assume that water may have find its way inside your device. And you’re wrong, an S7 is NOT a waterproofed device. It can resist splashing but it can still suffer from water damage if the seals preventing water from seeping inside are broken or damaged. Like Md Ainun Nishat above, we suggest that you treat this issue as water damage issue by letting a professional open the device so the hardware can be checked. If it’s still in warranty, send the device to Samsung. Water damage is considered user misuse so if Samsung will discover water inside the device during repair, they may charge you for the repair.

Problem 4: Galaxy S7 not making sound notifications for SMS

For about an hour now, my Galaxy S7 has stopped providing me with notifications for text messages. The message notification will very briefly appear in my toolbar, then disappear, and will not give a notification sound. If I’m lucky, it’ll do a quick little vibrate once. It will, however, give me a push notification, if I’m not already in my messages. All other apps are providing notifications, and sounds. Phone volume and notification volume are both on, and all permissions are enabled. I’ve tried restarting, and cheating message data/cache as well. I only use the default message app, and have no others. Any suggestions? Thanks. — John

Solution: Hi John. If you’re 100% positive that you’ve already set all the proper notification settings for the Messages app, then you must do all applicable software troubleshooting to fix the problem.

The first thing that you can do is to delete the cache and data of the Messages app. If you want to save your SMS, back them up using Smart Switch app first.

Below are the steps on how to clear an app’s cache and data:

  1. Open the Settings menu either through your notification shade (drop-down) or through the Settings app in your app drawer.
  2. Navigate down to “Apps”. This may be renamed to something like Applications or Application Manager in OEM skinned versions of Android 6 or 7.
  3. Once in there, click on an application.
  4. You’ll now see a list of stuff that gives you information about the app, including Storage, Permissions, Memory Use, and more. These are all clickable items. You’ll want to click on Storage.
  5. You should now clearly see the Clear Data and Clear Cache buttons for the application.

If the problem won’t go away after clearing the cache and data of Messages app, consider wiping the phone with factory reset. Here’s how:

  1. Create a backup of your important files such as photos, videos, contacts etc. You can use Smart Switch for this task.
  2. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S7.
  3. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  4. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  5. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
  6. Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  7. Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
  8. Now highlight the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
  9. Wait until your phone is finished doing the Master Reset. Once completed, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and press the Power key.
  10. The phone will now reboot longer than usual.

Problem 5: Cannot use Galaxy S7 edge due to FRP lock

I have just bought a Samsung Galaxy S7 edge from someone that was selling it online and there’s nothing wrong with it but I factory reset it so it was cleaned out and would start like I would of received the phone from a company. But once I did this, I turned it on and it was asking for my original Gmail account and password and I tried entering mine and it will not work. What do I do because I have no idea what the old owners information is and I have no idea how to get them now since they bought a new phone and have a new number? Please help me. I spent so much money on it to not be able to use it especially being on a very low fixed income.

Solution: Hi Kristen. Samsung introduced a security feature called Factory Reset Protection over a year back that prevents unauthorized factory reset in a device. This means that factory reset will only be allowed if the user can provide the correct Google account associated with the said phone. Even if you got the phone in a legitimate transaction, you’ll still be unable to use it now unless you enter the correct Google account of the previous owner.

We posted a workaround for this restriction last year but Samsung must have got wind of it as it stopped working months ago.

There is no known official solution for an FRP lock issue so most workarounds are provided by Android community. Try doing some research using Google search or Youtube. This link is a good workaround to start with.

Problem 6: Galaxy S7 screen has green color

Help! My screen in the top turned green all of a sudden while I was just looking at my social media and I can’t see anything in my screen anymore. I can still hear my notifications and the sound still works but I can’t see anything. I have already tried turning off the phone and pushing the turn off button and volume together to make the green in my phone go away but nothing seems to work. It saddens me because I don’t want my only choice to be to get a new phone and lose all of my photos and important things on my phone which I thought were saved to my drive but weren’t when I checked my email. — Nellycarrillo

Solution: Hi Nellycarrillo. Looks like you have a bad screen issue. To check, try to boot the phone to Recovery mode or Download mode. If the screen works normally in any of these modes (no green discoloration), that means that the cause is most probably software in nature, which you should be able to fix with a factory reset.

If the green discoloration remains even when you are in Recovery or Download mode, that means the screen assembly is probably toast at this moment. To fix it, you must send the phone in for repair or replacement.

Below are the steps on how to boot your S7 to Recovery and Download modes:

How to boot your S7 in Recovery mode:

  1. Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  4. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  6. You can either wipe the cache partition or do a factory reset when in this mode.

How to boot your S7 in  Download Mode:

  1. Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume DOWN keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume DOWN keys.
  4. Wait until the Download screen appears.
  5. If you can boot the phone in download mode but not in other modes, that means that your only way out may be to flash a stock or custom firmware.
  6. Use Google to look for a guide on how to do it.

Problem 7: Galaxy S7 can’t update apps when using home wifi

T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S7. SIM Card status shows Mobile network state “disconnected.” Can’t do soft reset (see phone model). Tried everything per Google Play store troubleshooting tips, etc., etc. Problem started after T-Mobile software update. Now I cannot update apps on my phone. But here’s a funny thing: when I use free wi-fi a long way from home, THE PHONE UPDATES EVERYTHING! So my problem then is, I CANNOT UPLOAD APPS USING HOME WI-FI. Our home internet provider is AT&T, you think that’s the problem (a phone company discreetly denying the service of a rival company?).

Tried both data usage settings (on & off while trying to update via home wi-fi). Updating away from home I only use free wi-fi and data usage off. I know this is an unusual problem, I hope you can help. Thanks! — Nano

Solution: Hi Nano. Below are possible solutions that you can try.

Refresh your S7 wifi version

Try refreshing your phone’s wifi firmware first by doing the following:

  1. Open dialer app (Phone app).
  2. Dial “*#2663#” (without the quotes).
  3. Tap on the box that says Refresh WiFi Version.
  4. Wait for the system to finish updating the firmware.
  5. Try updating your apps again using your home wifi.

Delete Google Services Framework app’s data

If the above steps won’t work, you can also try to wipe the data of Google Service Framework app. Here’s how:

  1. Open the Settings menu either through your notification shade (drop-down) or through the Settings app in your app drawer.
  2. Navigate down to “Apps”. This may be renamed to something like Applications or Application Manager in OEM skinned versions of Android 6.
  3. Once in there, look for Google Services Framework app. This is a system app so if you don’t find it in the list, make sure to include system apps.
  4. Click on Google Services Framework.
  5. You’ll now see a list of stuff that gives you information about the app, including Storage, Permissions, Memory Use, and more. These are all clickable items. You’ll want to click on Storage.
  6. You should now clearly see the Clear Data button. Tap it.

Wipe the phone with factory reset

Should both procedures won’t help at all, wipe the phone clean with factory reset. Refer to the steps above.

Problem 7: Galaxy S7 stopped responding after update was interrupted

This is how it all started. The phone wanted to do an update so I let it. in the middle I had leave so there was no wireless connection. when the phone came back on it as an error at would not go away “networkdiagnostic app has stopped” press close. well after several attempts to close and it would not the phone was just acting and now the touchscreen was no longer responding.

so I went to AT&T and they had no idea. Then I went to Best Buy Samsung department and the guy had no clue either and he said that the only option was to hard reboot which we did. — Claudia

Solution: Hi Claudia. Once you’ve allowed the phone to start downloading the update files, it’s not advisable to interrupt it, either by turning the device off, or by cutting the internet connection. That’s why it’s recommended that you ensure that you have a good internet connection and enough battery power left before updating. Not doing them usually leads to boot problems.

If you haven’t  tried them yet, make sure to:

  1. wipe the cache partition, and
  2. do a factory reset

If these two solutions won’t work, have the phone replaced.

Problem 8: Galaxy S7 won’t reboot, load normal mode

S7 edge shut down on its own and won’t reboot. Although blue light is flashing. This was yesterday. Today I was able to fully charge it and managed to start it up and make it into the lock screen but would not accept my swipe to enter the home screen. It then shut down and continuously rebooted itself until it went black with a flashing blue light again. Please help as I have very sentimental photos and videos I would like to retrieve *unaware of the version code at the moment. — Tommy

Solution: Hi Tommy. An issue like this usually requires a factory reset as one of the troubleshooting steps. We know you want to recover your files first but sadly, you really have not much choice right now. You either need to factory reset the device after wiping the cache partition, or manually flash a stock firmware and bootloader.

If possible, try flashing the bootloader first to see if that will work. Below are the general steps on how to do it. Be aware though that the exact flashing steps may be slightly different on your phone model so be sure to look for a good guide before doing it. The steps below are for demo purposes only.

  1. Look for the correct firmware for your phone model and download it. Make sure that select the right one. It should be the same exact firmware that ran previously on your device. We assume that you list down the firmware version somewhere. If you did not take note of it before, there’s a chance that you may pick the wrong one. As you may know now, using an incorrect firmware can cause complications so good luck with that.
  2. Let’s now say that you have identified the correct firmware. You then want to download it to your computer. The firmware file should have a bunch of files in it like AP_, BL_, CSC_, etc.
  3. Look for the file that starts with a label BL; this should be the corresponding bootloader file for this firmware. Once you’ve identified the bootloader file, copy it to your computer’s desktop or to any other folder that you can easily access.
  4. Proceed with the rest of the flashing procedure using the Odin program.
  5. In Odin, click on the BL tab and make sure to use the bootloader file you’ve identified earlier.
  6. Now, make sure that the “Device Added” status and its “ID:COM box” has turned blue before hitting the START button. This will initiate the flashing of your phone’s bootloader.
  7. Restart the phone once the procedure is finished.

Problem 9: Galaxy S7 “Settings has stopped” error

Hello. I have a problem trying to reach wifi network list. Settings-> connection -> wifi (to see the list of available wifi networks) and here i get error message “Settings has stopped.” I have read different solutions on how to fix “settings has stopped” error and it doesn’t help in my case. All other settings are working. Application manager… sound… bluetooth….security… i cant reach only wifi network list. Thanks in advance. — Agness

Solution: Hi Agness. “Settings has stopped” error does not really help a lot in terms of identifying the cause of such problem. It can mean anything. We suggest that you try to wipe the cache partition first. If that won’t help, do a factory reset.
