It’s September 29 today and as #Google gears up to release its often rumored #Nexus smartphones, #HTC has something to show as well. The Taiwanese manufacturer held a dedicated event today which saw the release of the Butterfly 3 for international markets as well as the One M9+ Aurora Edition.
The One M9+ Aurora Edition is pretty much the same as the One M9+ that was released earlier this year, but appears to be sporting a new 21-megapixel camera underneath along with laser autofocus for improved images. Clearly, the device is aimed at the shutter bugs although we fear the device will remain limited to the Chinese markets for the foreseeable future.
The Butterfly 3 on the other hand is an international product and will be available for purchase in a wide range of countries. It comes with IPX5 and IPX7 certification for water/dust resistance, making it an attractive offering.
It features a 5.2 inch Quad HD display, a 20-megapixel rear camera with a second sensor for image focusing (Duo Camera), a 13-megapixel camera on the front, an octa core Snapdragon 810 SoC, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage (expandable up to 200GB), Android 5.1 Lollipop and a 2,700 mAh battery.
HTC is expected to launch the third iteration of the Butterfly smartphone this year, as several rumors and leaks have indicated. The smartphone has now made an appearance on a benchmark site, revealing some of its hardware specifications. According to this leak, the smartphone will indeed sport a 2K resolution display, coupled with 3GB of RAM and an octa core Snapdragon 810 SoC.
It seems like HTC is unshaken by reports of the Snapdragon 810 overheating, with the One M9 said to be a victim of the case on multiple occasions. The Butterfly 3 is also said to be packing a 20.7-megapixel camera on the back, much like the One M9. Fulfilling the selfie duties will be a massive 13-megapixel camera on the front, so it seems like the Butterfly 3 will be a powerful device.
As we’ve seen in the past, this model might remain an exclusive to the Asian markets, so don’t get your hopes up if you live outside of Asia. There’s no word on whether the smartphone will carry a fingerprint scanner on board like the One M9+, but we won’t be surprised if it did.
The HTC Butterfly was the first HTC smartphone to come with a 1080p display back in early 2013. Since then, we’ve seen the likes of the HTC One M7, One M8 and another iteration of the Butterfly launching in the market. It is now said that the manufacturer is readying the launch of the third iteration of the Butterfly, possibly during the MWC 2015 event in two weeks from now.
The revelation was made by Upleaks, who has been accurate about HTC leaks in the past. According to the leak, the smartphone will pack a 5.2 inch Quad HD display. That’s pretty much all we know about the smartphone as the leak didn’t shed light on other hardware aspects of the handset.
Considering that the Butterfly lineup has been predominantly focused towards Asian markets, we won’t be surprised if HTC follows a similar strategy for the third gen model. For those wondering, HTC is also expected to launch a 5.5 inch QHD smartphone called the One M9 Plus. So there will be a QHD smartphone from HTC meant for the global customers as well.
