Methods to unlock, backup data and reset your Samsung Galaxy Note 5 with a broken and unresponsive screen

There are times when a slip of hand will result into a very frustrating scenario especially when your expensive smartphone is involved. So, I will tackle such problem in this post so that you would know what to do should you encounter similar issue in the future.

Galaxy Note 5 screen broken, need screen replacement but need to reset phone

Problem: Hi! I have a Galaxy Note 5 and it fell about a week ago and the screen was cracked in all directions. I am quite convinced that the screen has to be replaced however, I just want to make sure all my data especially the pictures will be backed up before I let the technician replace the screen. I have a lot of important files I can’t afford to lose in this phone so I’m trying to find a way to access them even with the screen broken. Is it even possible?

Troubleshooting: Yes, it’s possible to backup some of your files or data even if you can’t see anything on the screen but it takes patience to do things repeatedly when your first attempt doesn’t go through. The only hindrance is the security lock you’re using. There are locks that can easily be unlocked but there are also those that you can’t without using the phone’s touch screen.

So, the first thing you have to do is try to unlock the screen of your Galaxy Note 5. Of course, make sure that it’s turned on first. You may try calling your phone number or send a message to your phone to see if it sounds off.

After verifying that your Note 5 is turned on, it’s time to attempt to unlock it. And you actually have two options–use Samsung’s Find My Mobile service or Google’s Android Device Manager.

Bypass Note 5 screen lock using Samsung’s Find My Mobile service

Your Galaxy Note 5 must be connected to the internet whether through Wi-Fi or mobile data in order to follow these steps:

  1. Log on to Samsung’s Find My Mobile service.
  2. Enter your credentials if you already have or create a new Samsung account and register your phone if possible.
  3. The most crucial step in this method is verification and once you can get past that, unlocking your device is easy.
  4. Assuming you’ve successfully logged into your Samsung account, find the ‘Unlock my screen’ on left sidebar.
  5. Click “Unlock” to get past the lock screen.
  6. You’ll then receive a prompt telling you your phone’s screen is already unlocked.
  7. Now set your new password.

Bypass Note 5 lock screen using Android Device Manager

All Android devices have a built in service that may allow users to bypass locks in the event that they forgot theirs. Here’s how…

  1. Log on to Google’s Android Device Manager service through your computer.
  2. Just like Find My Mobile, verification is crucial to this process. So, using your Google account username and password, log in to ADM.
  3. Once successful, you can immediately see a list of Android devices so select the one you want to unlock.
  4. Inside ADM’s interface, select “Lock.”
  5. In the next screen, enter a temporary password and click Lock again.
  6. If successful, you should see buttons Ring, Lock and Erase.
  7. On your phone, you will be prompted to enter the temporary password you just created. If entered correctly, you can unlock your device.

Once you’ve unlocked your phone, you can connect it to a computer and use Smart Switch to extract contents. After you’ve successfully extracted the files and data you need, reset your phone to protect your privacy:

  1. Remove your Google account and disengage the screen locks to make sure you won’t trip the Factory Reset Protection (FRP).
  2. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy Note 5.
  3. Press and hold the Volume Up, Home and Power keys together.
  4. When the device powers on and displays ‘Power on logo’, release all keys and the Android icon will appear on the screen.
  5. Wait until the Android Recovery Screen appears after about 30 seconds.
  6. Using the Volume Down key, highlight the option, ‘wipe data/factory reset’ and press the Power key to select it.
  7. Press the Vol Down button again until the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted and then press the Power key to select it.
  8. After the reset is complete, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key to restart the phone.

If, however, you can’t unlock your device then you need help from someone who might know some tricks for the purpose of recovering important data.

Backing up Note 5 data with smashed screen and restore them on Note 3

  • For first time connecting the device to a computer, tick Allow on your phone. Prior to connecting the device to the program, make sure to enable USB debugging first. Note: If USB debugging is already enabled on the device, you may skip the process.
  • A window will appear. Click Backup to start the backup process.

Step 3: Select File Types to Backup

  • Tick Application data from the interface below to back up your app data.

  • Once backup process is complete. You may now check the backup files in detail by clicking

How to Restore App Data

Once you have successfully backed up your Android device, you can always restore them as you needed. From that, worrying would never be the option about losing data.
Step 1: Connect Android Handset and View Backup History

  • Connect your phone that you want to restore app data.
  • Tick Restore to begin.
  • Click View to preview the backup files.
  • Choose one file you want to get the data back and start.

Step 2: Preview and Recover App Data

  • Click Restore button and you can extract your data to your Android handset for few seconds.

Note: When restoring data from a backup, any new information in app that has been added to the device will be overwritten. If you want to confirm to continue, click Yes.

Troubleshooting: Well, there’s one procedure that I know, based on experience, works and that is to use Samsung’s Find My Mobile service. This procedure will require you to login using your Samsung account and to use Kies with the help of a computer. Here’s how you do it…

  1. Login to Find My Mobile using your Samsung account.
  2. On your computer, download and install Kies.
  3. Once you have logged in to Find My Mobile, you will have an option to unlock your phone.
  4. After you’ve unlocked your phone, you can then connect it to your computer and use Kies to extract whatever data you want.

Galaxy S6 Edge touchscreen not working properly

Problem: Hi. I bought a Galaxy S6 Edge for about 2 weeks ago. The problem started today. When I went in to any places like general or even go in to message I can’t go back by the touch I have tried to reset the phone and turn it on and off. My father have the same phone and doesn’t have this problem at all. What can be the problem? This is also the first Samsung I have but now I this it has been a big mistake by buying this phone.

Troubleshooting: For a brand-new, 2-week old phone, this problem should not occur. The best thing you can do is perform a master reset to see if the problem gets fixed after that. If so, then it might have been caused by an app you installed or a firmware glitch. However, if the problem remained after the reset, then you will have to return it and have it replaced.

Master Reset

  1. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up, Home and Power keys together.
  3. When the device powers on and displays ‘Power on logo’, release all keys and the Android icon will appear on the screen.
  4. Wait until the Android Recovery Screen appears after about 30 seconds.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, highlight the option, ‘wipe data/factory reset’ and press the Power key to select it.
  6. Press the Vol Down button again until the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted and then press the Power key to select it.
  7. After the reset is complete, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key to restart the phone.

Galaxy S6 Edge screen timeout reverts back to 30 seconds

Problem: The screen timeout on my device seems to always reset to 30 seconds. When i go in to change it to something else (3 minutes or 5 minutes) it will revert back in a 24 hour period to 30 seconds.  It has done this since I got the phone and is quite annoying.  I don’t know if that is a power saving function or is there something wrong with the phone or software/operating system.   Any help is greatly appreciated.

Troubleshooting: There’s another setting that will override your screen timeout. It’s called Secure Lock. Once set, the screen will lock automatically after the time elapsed. So, if the secure lock feature is set to lock or turn the screen off after 30 seconds, it doesn’t matter if you set the screen timeout to 3 or 5 minutes, the screen turns off in 30 seconds. To disable it, follow these…

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Find that tap Settings.
  3. Scroll to Lock screen and security section and tap Secure lock settings.
  4. Set it to a higher value than the screen timeout.

Related Problem: When I use the information stream on the edge feature the screen timesout after a few seconds even though I have the timeout settings on 10 mins, auto brightness is turned off, and power saving mode is turned off. Galaxy S6 Edge screen turned black for a day

Problem: The screen went completely black for about a day, I was listening to music in Google Music, left it alone, came back to life next day. The phone was on, I could hear it on call it and was able to get call but screen was black not able to see anything had same problem with my son’s Galaxy S6 Edge and returned to the store.

Suggestion: We really don’t know what happened to your phone but based on reports, this behavior is often caused by a system crash, however, in your case, the phone was still responding. But in case it happens again, all you got to do is press and hold the Volume Down and Power buttons for 20 seconds together. The phone will force restart and perform a simulated battery disconnect. This will bring your phone back to life.

Galaxy S6 Edge has some weird touch problems

Problem: I love my Edge, except for weird touch problem. I’ve had the phone for about 2 weeks and it’s done this straight out of the box. When I press an app icon, or a card in a game of solitaire, the icon seems to move around slightly. I may have to touch it 3 or 4 times before it is still enough to register that I’ve touched it. Especially annoying when playing the game. Small problem in the scheme of things,  but still… I have not had touch problems with the keyboard like some others. I also have had the problem with swiping the edge as some, but saw your answer to that one.  Hope there’s something that you can help me with. Thanks.

Troubleshooting: Maybe the phone randomly freezes, lags or hangs that’s why it couldn’t respond to your touches. In this case, it’s not really a touchscreen issue but a performance problem. It occurs when there are too many apps running in the background or there are too much data the phone needs to manage but either way, the problem can be solved by a master reset.

However, if the problem was indeed a touchscreen issue, all you got to do is isolate the problem. More often, rogue apps or those that frequently crash may interfere with the phone’s primary functions. So, boot your device in safe mode to disable all third-party apps.

  1. Turn off your Galaxy S6 Edge.
  2. Press and hold the Power key.
  3. When ‘Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge’ appears, immediately release the Power key and then press and hold the Volume Down button.
  4. Continue holding the Volume Down button until the phone finishes the restart.
  5. When you see Safe Mode on the lower left corner of the screen, release the button.

Once in safe mode, try to use the phone and observe closely if the touchscreen issues still occur. If they don’t, then third-party apps have something to do with it, otherwise, it’s all the firmware but either way, still, a master reset will fix the problem.

Galaxy S6 Edge screen not sensitive enough after installing screen protector

Problem: I recently purchased a screen protector and since doing so I have to press the screen real hard to use. Is there a way of increasing the screen sensitivity in order to press a more freely?

Answer: In your case, it’s the screen protector that affected the sensitivity of the touchscreen. I understand it’s newly-installed but if you can’t use your phone properly because of that, it’s better to get rid of it. About the sensitivity setting, well, Samsung believes that its flagship’s screen is already very sensitive and took away the setting for it. So, you really can’t adjust the sensitivity in your Galaxy S6 Edge.

Galaxy S6 Edge splits the screen upon opening an app

Problem: Frequently, while making a call or using an app the screen switches to a split screen away from the app screen I had open. In these cases, the recent button or return key don’t work. I have to press the home key and then re-open the app. But then the screen switches to a split screen again. What can I do?

Solution: The multi window feature may have been enabled. Disable it and this problem will be fixed:

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Find that tap Settings.
  3. Under Device, tap Multi Window.
  4. Toggle the Multi Window switch to Off.

Recover photos from Galaxy S6 Edge with a broken screen

Problem: I accidentally dropped my phone while the case was off. The screen and the back glass are both heavily cracked. At first the phone was turning on and off but now it won’t even display anything. I can tell the battery is charging because the device is very warm after having it plugged in for a few minutes. I just want to recover photos. I tried booting in safe mode and recovery mode but it’s not working.

Workaround: First off, you cannot recover photos or any files from a phone that’s turned off. So, the first thing you should do is make sure the phone still turns on. As you positively said, the device still charges so try charging it for ten minutes just to make sure there’s enough battery to power up its hardware for several minutes and then attempt to turn it on.

I understand the screen is cracked or broken and it displays nothing but black. The thing is if the problem is limited to the display being broken, then the device should be able to power up just fine.

You may try calling your number to find out if it still rings. If so, then the phone is on and if you didn’t enable screen lock, you can just connect it directly to your computer and recover those files, otherwise, proceed with the instructions below.

The next thing you need to do is make sure it’s connected to the internet either via mobile data or Wi-Fi. If both were disabled prior to this problem, then there’s nothing you can do to recover your photos. Just send it in for screen replacement.

In case you’ve left Wi-Fi on, try to go to a hotspot where your phone previously connected.

Assuming that it has an active internet connection, get yourself a computer or laptop and login to Samsung’s Find My Mobile service. You need your Samsung account credentials to be able to login.

Edge screen doesn’t work even if settings are correct

Problem: Ok, I ordered my phone galaxy s6 edge. The problem I have is that the edge won’t work. I have enable it in the settings but still nothing works. I tried to bring up the notification on the edge of the screen while the screen is off. For example news feed or even my alarm and weather. I have no clue what may have caused this problem. Hoping you guys can assist me.

Answer: Things like this happen all the time and there are always units that belong to a “bad” batch. There’s no use troubleshooting the problem as it can’t be fixed simply because it’s a manufacturing defect. The best thing to do is to have the device replaced. I’m sure you provider will agree to this considering its technician can’t do something about it either.

Galaxy S6 Edge lacking screen sensitivity setting (Glove mode)

Problem: I can’t intensify the sensitivity on my screen as in the touch part. I had read one of your suggestions to another person, but my phone doesn’t have just a display under settings it has display & wallpaper & doesn’t have an option for sensitivity. Can you help me?

Answer: It’s because Samsung believes the screens of the new Galaxy devices are already sensitive enough that there’s no room for the sensitivity setting or Glove mode. We can’t do something about it but I think the engineers should have just included the sensitivity setting as it would always come in handy since other owners have their own sensitivity preferences.

Related Problem: I just bought a Galaxy S6 Edge a couple of days ago and I have noticed that the screen is very sensitive. I’ll barely touch the screen and it will open whatever app I didn’t mean to touch.

I noticed that someone else had the same issue and the troubleshooter responded with a solution but I don’t seem to have that method in my phone. When I go into my settings>display the only options I have there are:

  • brightness
  • font
  • screen timeout
  • smart stay
  • screen mode
  • daydream

Galaxy S6 Edge’s edge screen is showing a crack

Question: Hey, this is Thalita from Brazil, I bought the Galaxy S6 edge a while ago and one day I just saw a crack on the Edge screen, at first I thought that was my fault even though I not a clumsy person and had no idea how that happened, but then I saw some people complaining that their Edge screen has spontaneously cracked. Answer: Only you knows whether the crack just appeared one day or if the device suffered some kind of physical damage. But since you said it just appeared there, just like what others are complaining about, then you always have the right to request for a replacement.

Galaxy S6 Edge slide to answer calls not working, Home button does

Problem: My phone wont slide to answer any calls or even to do anything else with it. But the home buttons works. Cannot access it to get any info not even to answer my texts.

Solution: It’s just a minor setting problem. Just go to Apps > Settings > Applications > tap Phone > under Answering and ending calls, disable Pressing the Home key. That’s pretty much it!

Galaxy S6 Edge screen won’t turn on after diving into water

Problem: Phone got in water and began acting erratically now screen won’t come on although light on phone shows phone is on.

Suggestion: Let me guess, you immediately turned the phone on after you fished it out of the water, didn’t you? Apparently, it’s water damage and there’s nothing we can do about it. The phone needs to be properly cleaned and dried. You need a technician for that. So, send it in for checkup.
