AT&T Consolidating Text Plans Says Goodbye to $10 Plan

Engadget first started reporting earlier in the day that AT&T is making some adjustments to their current text messaging plans.  AT&T’s new texting plans will start on Sunday without the availability of the $10/mo 1000 text message plan. Going forward customers will have to choose a $20/mo unlimited texting plan or pay $.20 cents for text messages and $.30 per mms message.  As we know from AT&T’s Cingular days, that can get expensive.

As or friend Dan Siefert at Mobile Burn points out, after just 50 messages paying a la carte you will hit the $10 mark whereas you’d still have 950 texts to go with the old plan.

As with any plan change at most of the major carriers, if you are currently on the $10 plan for 1000 text messages you will be “grandfathered” into that plan until it’s time for you to start a new plan.

AT&T gave this statement about the change

“We regularly evaluate our offers and are making some adjustments to our messaging lineup. Starting August 21, we’re streamlining our text messaging plans for new customers and will offer an unlimited plan for individuals for $20 per month and an unlimited plan for families of up to five lines for $30 per month. The vast majority of our messaging customers prefer unlimited plans and with text messaging growth stronger than ever, that number continues to climb among new customers. Existing customers don’t have to change any messaging plan they have today, even when changing handsets.”
