Sony MDR-XB400 Headphone Review

I finally got to replace the stock headphone of my Android smartphone yesterday after the left side didn’t work. I was supposed to purchase an in-ear type of headphone at the local store when something caught my eye. It was the Sony MDR-XB400, which is a closed type over the ear headphone, that had a simple yet elegant design and had “Extra Bass” written on its packaging.

The Sony MDR-XB400 sounded simply amazing when I tested it on the playlist of my smartphone. The bass was now emphasized giving it that extra kick. As you wear these headphones you will immediately notice that it isolates most of the noise in your environment which makes it perfect to use when you are listening to music. You will also notice that it is very comfortable to wear. The earpads are made of a special memory foam that makes it possible for you to listen to music for an extended period of time without feeling any discomfort.

Technical Specifications of the Sony MDR-XB-400

  • Cord : Flat
  • Audio Frequency Response : 5 to 22,000 Hz
  • Audio Driver Unit : Closed, Dynamic (supra-aural) 30mm driver, dome type
  • Audio Impedance : 24 ohms at 1kHz
  • Audio Sensitivity (db) : 100 dB/mW
  • Power Handling Capacity : 1000 mW
  • Design : Over-the-head
  • Magnet : Neodymium
  • Plug : Gold-plated L-shaped stereo mini

This is actually one of the three extra bass headphones that Sony released late last year, the other two being the MDR-XB600 and MDR-XB800. What makes this line of headphones special is that they use the company’s latest Advanced Direct Vibe technology that reproduces the sub-bass notes of today’s popular music. If you love listening to music that has a lot of bass in it such as dubstep or electronic pop then you’ll definitely want these headphones.

In terms of design this model uses a flat cable which is good since it prevents it from getting tangled. The 3.5 mm connector is gold plated while the headphone itself uses 30mm drivers.

The Sony MDR-XB-400 cost around $45 at most stores which is already a good deal considering that it sounds even better compared to higher priced models.

If you are looking to replace the stock headphone of your Android device then consider getting this model.
