How To Fix Steam Image Failed To Upload Error | NEW in 2024

Are you getting the “image failed to upload” error when trying to message your friends on Steam chat? In this troubleshooting article, we’ll show you the easy ways to get rid of this bug.

How to fix Steam Image failed to upload error?

The Steam “image failed to upload” error is usually an indication that the Steam chat is having a hard time transferring an image file to the servers in order to be sent to someone. At other times, the error may be a sign that the internet connection has stopped working while you’re trying to upload images.

At other times, it may be caused by something else entirely, such as a corrupted Steam cache, third party app, VPN or proxy server usage, or by random minor glitch with the Steam client.

In any of these cases, here are the solutions that you can try:

Fix #1: Force quit Steam.

The Steam image failed to upload error may be the result of a random bug with the Steam client or Steam chat. The first thing that you can therefore do in this case is to make sure to refresh the Steam client. To do that, you can force quit Steam by force closing it via Task Manager (CTRL+SHIFT+ESC).

Once Steam has been closed, open it up again and check for the problem.

Fix #2: Log out and log back in.

If restarting the client did not fix the Steam Image failed to upload error, the next step that you can do is to log out of your account and log back in.

Just click on arrow beside your profile name at the upper right, select Log out of account, and then log back in.

Fix #3: Check for Steam updates.

Keeping the Steam client updated is important. Although the app should automatically tell you update if it’s out of date, you should consider checking again if you haven’t checked recently after leaving it running for a long time.

Fix #4: Run Steam as Admin.

Certain applications may require administrator access in order to work properly. Although Steam is not designed to request for Admin access, you can voluntarily grant it at this time to see if that will make a difference.

Fix #5: Refresh the Steam cache.

The Steam image failed to upload bug may occur if the download cache of the application is corrupted. You can try to refresh the download cache with these  steps:

  1. Open Steam and go to Settings.
  2. Click on the Downloads tab.
  3. Click on the CLEAR DOWNLOAD CACHE button.
  4. Restart the Steam client and check if the error returns.

Fix #6: Turn off your security software.

If you’re running any other application when Steam client is running, it’s possible that the cause of the error is caused by one of them. Try to close them to see if you can upload images after closing each one.

If your Steam chat works normally when a certain app is closed, then it’s possible that it’s the one causing the problem. Make sure to also try to disable firewall and antivirus software if you have them just in case.

Fix #7: Disable VPN or proxy server.

For some people who are using a proxy server or VPN, their Steam chat may not  work properly. If you’re using one, try to disable your VPN or proxy and see if that will fix the problem.

Fix #8: Try another file.

If you seem to be only getting the error when trying to upload a particular image, you can upload another file to see if the bug remains.

If you can upload other images without issues on Steam chat, that means that the image you’re having an issue with is likely corrupted or damaged.

Keep in mind that Steam chat only lets you upload an image with less than 10 MB file size. Anything bigger than that will lead to an error telling you that the image file is beyond 10MB.

Fix #9: Use the web version of Steam.

If you are still having an issue with your Steam chat at this point, consider using the web version of Steam chat
