Sony Xperia S, Mini Pro, Pro Android 4.0 ICS Update rolled out in Canada

Finally, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) updates for Sony Xperia S, Xperia Mini Pro and Xperia Pro have already been rolled out starting on Tuesday, September 11th, in Canada. Canadian owners have waited so long to receive the update and Sony just made it happen. Sony Xperia CA broke the news through its official Twitter page, although it also advised owners to use Sony’s PC Companion tool as the package couldn’t be downloaded over-the-air.

“We’re happy to announce that the ICS update for #Xperia mini pro, pro & S is available today. Remember to use PC Companion when updating,” the Twitter post said.

Basically, the updates for these devices have already been rolled out in other regions outside Canada. The Japanese Electronics company didn’t provide an explanation why the Canadian roll out was delayed; nevertheless, users will be glad knowing they can now enjoy their Xperia phones more with the new Ice Cream Sandwich OS.

Sony has been widely criticized earlier this year when it released devices running on Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Xperia phones usually sport better specs even those that were built to compete in the entry-level market and majority of them can churn out ICS without a problem. Criticisms and negative reviews actually pushed the company to make a promise to roll out ICS update as soon as possible. Its promises were kept on time except in Canada.

Sony Xperia S was released earlier this year running Gingerbread but Sony, during the announcement, reiterated that the device was actually built to run Ice Cream Sandwich with its Qualcomm MSM8260 Snapdragon dual-core processor clocked at 1.5GHz. Enthusiasts believe that the company opted to put in GB because it was more stable at that time than ICS. If there is one thing Sony does not do in haste that would be the development of the firmware.

If Xperia S owners already expected ICS to come, so are Xperia Mini Pro and Xperia Pro owners. While these handsets are competing in the entry-level market, they actually sport impressive specs. Both uses the same Qualcomm MSM8255 Snapdragon 1 GHz processors with 512MB RAM. Some users, however, reported that while they were expecting a boost in performance from their devices, they were disappointed because ICS caused a radical change in processing speed. Others say they better off with Gingerbread in their Xperia Pro or Mini Pro.

The ICS update for Xperia S, Pro and Mini Pro are expected to bring hundreds of features.

  1. It’s not just Canada that’s been held back. I’m in the UK and the update still isn’t available for my Pro. In fact, I just double checked with the Bridge software (why did they disable OTA updates?) and right now it’s actually saying it can’t even check for updates because there’s a server error.

This is the last Sony phone I’ll ever buy. Terrible service, terrible product, broken promises.
