Sony has just announced results of the second quarter of 2013 with the smartphone division seeing sales of over 10 million (Xperia) devices. Up until the end of Q2, Sony only had the Xperia Z as its lone flagship while subsequent months saw the launch of the Xperia Z Ultra and the Xperia Z1 at IFA earlier in September. So the sales figures would be even higher for the third quarter with more smartphones making its way to the market. The company expects to sell 42 million smartphones by the end of this year which is a rise of 9 million compared to 2012. So it’s all good for Sony’s smartphone department.
However, the company’s TV and camera divisions have seen a major slump in sales, which has resulted in the company trimming down the profit forecast for the year. The surge in smartphone sales however will offer as consolation for the lagging TV and camera sales. Sony will look to make the best of the holiday season as it launches the PlayStation 4 gaming console later this year.
