Samsung to launch Galaxy S Duos S7562 with Android ICS

Samsung has a very good business strategy of launching low end smartphones that look like the flagship device, and the strategy has been working very well so far. Galaxy S is one such device, which was launched as its flagship device back in its days. Later, the South Korean mobile giant launched several other low end phones that looked like Galaxy S, and the strategy worked. Samsung sells a lot of these phones, and is great for customers who don’t want to pay hundreds of dollars for all those super capabilities that they aren’t going to use. Instead, they settle for these low end smartphones, and it makes sense because I personally wouldn’t buy a sportscar if my main intention is to drive in city traffic.

The Galaxy Ace is one such example which was launched with lower specs and smaller price tag, and was placed lower than the Galaxy S, but received popularity due to its bigger brother. Dual SIM phones are very popular in developing countries, especially because they let the user use two SIM cards at a time, thus allowing to use multiple prepaid networks on a single handset. Most of the Dual SIM market is captured by cheap Chinese phones, but manufacturers like Samsung and Nokia are concentrating on capitalizing the popularity of these kinds of phones. As a part of effort, Samsung launched dual SIM versions of Galaxy Ace (called as Galaxy Ace Duos) and Galaxy Y (called as Galaxy Y Duos). After the success of dual SIM android smartphones that Samsung had launched previously, the mobile giant is all ready to launch a dual SIM version of Galaxy S smartphone.

Going by the looks, the Samsung Galaxy S Duos S7562 looks strikingly similar to Samsung’s flagship device for 2012, the Samsung Galaxy S3, however, the device has a smaller 4 inch screen and a slightly modified home button. This device will be placed above Galaxy Y Duos and Galaxy Ace Duos.

Galaxy S Duos’ comes with a 4 inch display having a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels, which converts to pixel density of 233 PPI, and that is pretty good for a low end device it is. Running the show is a 1 Ghz Cortex A5 processor that is based on ARM v7 architecture, and hence the device will support Google Chrome browser. Graphics wise, Adreno 200 GPU onboard which will suffice the needs for day to day tasks, however, playing 3D games will be too much to ask for.
Imaging department is taken care of by a 5 MP camera on the back and a VGA front facing camera for video calling. Other hardware details include 4 gig of internal storage, microSD expansion slot and 512 MB of RAM. Galaxy S Duos boots Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box, which is really good and will be a great selling point, but possibility of it receiving Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update is still unknown.

The device will also feature 3G connectivity, but only on primary SIM. Along with 3G, WiFi, WiFi hotspot and bluetooth 3.0 functionality is also available. It’s a dual SIM phone with 2 SIM slots, of which both are GSM. A unique feature which Samsung has put into the device is the ability of this device to forward a call received on say, SIM 2, even if the user is on a call using SIM 1. Samsung calls this feature as ‘Dual SIM always on’, and it sounds like a good selling point.

The smartphone will be out in Russia first, in June. Then it will be gradually made available in Europe, CIS, Latin America, Southeast and Southwest Asia, Middle East, Africa, and China. There’s no word on pricing, but it should cost somewhere around $350 for an unlocked out of contract phone. Nevertheless, the device is a great addition to Samsung Duos lineup.
