Samsung Galaxy S7 turned off after Nougat update and won’t turn on (easy fix)

Some of our readers have reported that their Samsung Galaxy S7 units turned off by themselves after being updated to Android 7 Nougat and when they tried to turn them back on, they won’t respond anymore.

Could it be that they downloaded a bad update or is there a issue with the hardware of their phones?

Well, it could be something else and we won’t know for sure what the problem is unless we tried troubleshooting the phone. It could be due to physical damage or it could also be due to liquid damage. Having a phone with a black screen and won’t respond could normally cause panic to the users but if the problem occurred without apparent reason, you can rest assured the problem is minor and can be fixed without any help from a technician.

In this post, I will share with you the one little trick that could bring your S7 back to life. There’s no guarantee the problem will be fixed but based on my experience, this solution is very effective against minor issues that often occur after an update. How to fix Galaxy S7 that won’t turn on after the Android 7 Nougat update

A problem that starts after a firmware update should always has something to do with the system caches but the thing is, in this case, the phone won’t turn on or respond so there’s nothing much you can do about it. The first thing you should do is make the phone respond so assuming the problem is not due to physical and/or liquid damage, this is how you can bring your Galaxy S7 back to life:

Press and hold the Volume Down button and the Power key for 10 seconds or more. This procedure is what we often refer to as Forced Reboot. It simulates battery pull which is very effective against firmware crashes and other minor issues. It’s safe and very effective so I urge you to do it before anything else.

However, if your phone won’t respond to this, then you should try the alternative to make sure you’re doing the combination correctly…

  1. Press and hold the Volume Down button and don’t let go of it.
  2. Then, press and hold the Power key while holding down the Volume Down button.
  3. Keep both keys pressed for 10 seconds or more.

As you can see, it’s basically the same as the first procedure but this time we’re just making sure the Volume Down and Power key combo is done correctly to simulate battery pull. Pressing the Power key first will immediately trigger the phone and it defeats the purpose of the combination so you should press and hold the Volume Down button first. If, by any chance, the phone still won’t respond to this, then you should try this as well…

  1. Use the original charger of your Galaxy S7 and plug it to a working wall outlet.
  2. Now, using the original cable, connect your phone to its charger but make sure that the phone isn’t heating up.
  3. Allow the phone to charge for ten minutes regardless whether the charging symbol is displayed on the screen or not.
  4. After which, do the Forced Reboot procedure again by pressing and holding both the Volume Down button and the Power key for 10 seconds or more.

The moment the phone turns on, you should do the following the prevent the problem from happening again in the future:

  1. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S7.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  4. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  6. Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
  7. Now highlight the option ‘Yes’ using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
  8. Wait until your phone is finished doing the Master Reset. Once completed, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and press the Power key.
  9. The phone will now reboot longer than usual.
