When charging a smartphone such as the #Samsung #Galaxy #S5 it’s always best to use the charger that came with it. The reason behind this is that this charger has been designed to provide the right amount of voltage to charge the phone. Third party chargers sometimes charge the phone using a lower amount of power which either makes the charging time longer or does not charge the phone at all. If the charger provides a higher power to the phone then it could also shorten the lifespan of the battery or damage it.
There are however instances when despite using the original charger that came with the phone issues can still occur. This is why in this latest installment of our troubleshooting series we would like to tackle the Galaxy S5 unable to charge use original charger issue & other related problems.

S5 Unable To Charge Use Original Charger
Problem: “unable to charge. use original charger” message. Googled it. Won’t work with ANY charger (but our Galaxy Tab A will). Restarted. Wiped Cache. Factory reset. Pulled battery. Called Verizon. Called Samsung. You name it. Finally died. Seems to be a common problem. Is there a fix? Thanks for your help.
Solution: If you already tried a factory reset and tried using different chargers ( hopefully with different charging cords as well) then the problem could be caused by a faulty phone hardware component.
Try checking the charging port of the phone first if it has any signs of dirt or debris. Presence of this foreign matter has been known to interfere with the charging process. If necessary, clean this charging port using a can of compressed air or cotton bud dipped in alcohol.
If the issue still occurs then try using a different battery on your phone.
If the above steps fail then I suggest you bring your phone to an authorized service center and have it checked.
S5 Does Not Charge When In Use
Problem: My samsung galaxy s5 was charging fine when I would be on it now it doesn’t charge while I’m playing it with the cord in and it takes hours and hours to fully charge when I’m not on it whats wrong with it.
Solution: The best way to charge the phone is to leave it charging without using it since this will speed up the charging process. You can however use the phone while it is charging however the amount of time required to fully charge the device will be longer. The issue you are having right now however isn’t normal since the phone will refuse to charge when you are using it or even take hours to fully recharge when not in use.
To troubleshoot this problem you need to try replacing the charging cord first as this usually gets damaged easily especially if it is constantly coiled or bent. Consider also replacing the wall charger block. Next, try cleaning the charging port of your phone. The presence of dirt or debris can sometimes interfere with the charging process.
Another factor that can cause this problem is the phone software. In this case I suggest you try wiping the cache partition of your device. If the issue still persists then try to backup your phone data then do a factory reset.
One other thing you should also consider is to replace the phone battery. If this battery is faulty then it could also cause this type of problem.
S5 Does Not Stay Powered On
Problem: The phone will not stay power up. I followed the steps that were listed on a previous web page of your. I follow all of the steps on the website if it will not power on except take it to a technician. It will not stay powered on once all of the steps are followed. Is there another step before sending the phone back to Samsung because it is less than a year old?
Solution: If you already followed all of our recommended troubleshooting steps for this type of issue without any results then this could already be a hardware related problem.
Just to verify check the list below if you have already performed them
- Start the phone in Safe Mode
- Go to recovery mode and wipe the cache partition
- Go to recovery mode and do a factory reset ( backup copy of your data is needed)
- Replace the phone battery
- Clean the charging port of the phone
- Charge the phone using a different charging cord and wall charger then turn on the phone while still connected to the charger
If these steps fail then you need to have the phone checked at an authorized service center.
S5 Battery Won’t Charge
Problem: My phone was left outside after a rainy evening on Friday (March 11th, 2016). After putting it in rice (as I saw afterwards that it was not the best thing) I put the old battery in and turned it on. It was working fine for a couple days until this morning (March 14th) when i suddenly started getting issues of “battery won’t charge”, even though it was in my pocket. I took the battery out and am waiting on a new one tomorrow. I will charge with the original charger to see if that helps. If I do have more water damage than I thought, what can I do? Thanks!
Solution: In this case it’s best to check if the battery is causing this problem. If this issue still occurs even with the new battery installed then there’s a possibility that the rain could have affected some components in your phone. Try checking the phone’s charging port if there are any dirt or debris. If necessary, clean this port using a can of compressed air or cotton bud dipped in alcohol. If the above steps fail then I suggest you have your phone checked at an authorized service center.
S5 Gets hot Does Not Turn On
Problem: Yesterday (3/9/16) my S5 was on my desk and not being used. I noticed a blue light in the upper left hand corner was blinking and grabbed the phone and it was really hot to the touch. The phone would not turn on and so I put it on the charger and the phone became hotter. I switched batteries with my husband’s S5 and it still would not turn on. This is the first time this has happened. I do not use the internet outside the house and so the apps are at a minimum. I did not have apps running – only the text and phone were on. Please help.
Solution: If your phone is hot even when not in use and becomes even hotter when connected to the charger then this could be caused by two things. It’s either a service or app is aggressively running in the background making the phone hot or this could be a hardware related problem where a component inside your phone is getting hot.
To troubleshoot this issue follow the steps listed below.
- Take out the phone battery and microSD card ( if you have one installed). Press and hold the power button for at least a minute. This will discharge the phone circuit and clear out its RAM. Reinsert the battery then turn on the phone. If it does not turn on then connect it to its wall charger for at least 20 minutes then try to turn it on.
- Check if you can start your phone in Safe Mode. In this mode only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run. If you are able to access this mode then an app could be causing this problem. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.
- Check if you can access the recovery mode. If you are able to then proceed with wiping the cache partition of your phone.
- Check if you can access the recovery mode. Do a factory reset. Take note that this will delete your phone data so make sure to have a backup copy before doing this.
If the above troubleshooting steps fail to resolve the problem then I suggest you bring your phone to an authorized service center and have it checked.
S5 Does Not Boot
Problem: i am on my third Samsung 5 in 5 months. got new one yesterday. worked fine, now won’t boot up. Samsung screen comes on, then disappears. Then boots up again. Have changed the battery. Have cleared the cache, have tried booting in safe mode unsuccessfully. This is my third phone! What can I do to get off this train?
Solution: Try taking out the phone battery and microSD card then press and hold the power button for at least a minute. Reinsert just the battery then try to turn on your phone. If the issue still persists then check if you can access the recovery mode. From here you should wipe the cache partition of your phone first. S5 Reboots And Freezes
Problem: I was playing candy crush, trying to purchase an in add item via Google rewards. I received a text and the middle of the screen had a 1 inch black horizontal line. The phone continues to reboot every 30 seconds, freezing on different rebooting screams. Twice there has been a cracking sound and three times a partially or entire pixelated screen. It is a refurbished phone that is one month out of warranty. Att checked it and found the storage was low, I deleted a bunch of texts and pictures, it continued. I tried to reboot it in safe mode but at this time I can not get it to reboot. Therefore I don’t know which version of android I have. Also the blue led light is on while the phone will not reboot.
Solution: I highly recommend a factory reset in this case. Do the reset from the recovery mode. Take note that this will delete your phone data so only do this if you have a backup copy of your phone data.
