Samsung Galaxy S5 Problems, Errors, Glitches, Solutions and Troubleshooting Guides [Part 27]


For a couple of days now we keep receiving emails from Galaxy S5 owners who recently updated to Android 5.0 Lollipop. The common problem is that the phone can’t stay connected to the WiFi network–it keeps disconnecting and reconnecting. As a result, the battery is drained way quicker than when the phone was running Kitkat.

This post is intended to address this issue as well as the battery problem. So, if you recently updated your phone and experiencing WiFi and battery issues, read the first problem I addressed in this post to know how to fix them. I included testimonies from our readers who were so generous to share what fixed their problems.

WiFi Won’t Stay Connected After Lollipop Update

Problem: Hey there, I been having an issue with my phone. It started a week or so ago. My phone will not stay connected to WiFi. For example, I will be at home and it will connect to the wifi. 2 seconds later it will disconnect and then 2 seconds later it will connect again. This just keeps happening over and over. Just to clarify, I’ll be on apps and they will close because wifi is lost and reopen a sec later because wifi is back on. Repeating cycle. I know it’s not a router issue because my tablet, laptop and other phones in the house aren’t experiencing this and stay connected like normal. Can you help me with this? I tried factory reset of my phone and that didn’t help. Lost several contacts from it. Haha. Thanks, Kelton.

Related Problem: I read your trouble email on Dripper and I am having exact same problem that Ron reported with the S5 all of a sudden the last 2 days have been frustrating. WiFi switches on then soon as I open email or app it disconnects without warning so it’s flipping between wifi and 4G constantly. I unchecked the box on the WiFi setting to prevent it from switching back and forth while I was home connected to my home AT&T wifi and that seemed to work for a bit but the wifi symbol kept doing the up and down arrow number. I tried everything you suggested prior to unchecking the prevent switching box, cleared all the settings, forgot the connection then reset my home wifi and reconnected with my password settings and that didn’t work. This could get expensive so we need a fix. Maybe some people haven’t noticed their S5 flipping back and forth between wifi & 4G but I am at least the 3rd person I know having this problem with just the S5.

My carrier is AT&T. Any help you could post on Dripper would be helpful. I haven’t received answers to my other email sent regarding the locking on its own error requested a few days ago. Thanks, Sunshine.

Solution: Hello Kelton and Sunshine. This problem isn’t new, in fact, it’s common to all Android smartphones. We were alarmed by the number of people who emailed us regarding this problem and majority of them are Galaxy S5 owners who just updated their devices to Android 5.0 Lollipop. But even before Lollipop, there have already been users who were complaining that their WiFi keeps disconnecting and reconnecting. As a result, the battery drains faster because it’s not only WiFi that’s concerned here but also mobile data. When it disconnects, the phone will try to connect to a mobile data network and if it failed, it will scan and reconnect back to the WiFi network. There are two ways to fix this problem.

Disable Mobile Data

The phone will not attempt to switch to mobile data if it’s already disabled. However, the downside of this procedure is that apps or services that require data will not be able to function or pull updates. The best example of this is MMS. Without mobile data, you cannot send or receive picture messages.

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Touch Settings.
  3. Scroll to and tap More networks.
  4. Tap Mobile networks.
  5. Untick the checkbox next to Mobile data.
  6. Tap OK to confirm.

Disable Smart Network Switch

Again, Galaxy S5 can automatically switch between networks and more often this happens when one connection is stronger than the other.

  1. From the Home screen, tap Apps icon.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap WiFi.
  4. Untick the checkbox next to Smart network switch.

The following are emails we received from our readers suggesting how to fix this problem (thanks for sharing guys):

Like some of your other readers, I have experienced issues with my AT&T S5 staying connected to wifi after uograding to 4.4.4. I took my phone to my local Best Buy’s Samsung kiosk and asked the person there. He offered to flash it for me but the only thing his system had was 4.4.2 for my phone. He thought it was strange that AT&T would push out an update that he didn’t have but suggested the factory reset. I tried that when I got home but it still would not stay connected to wifi. I called AT&T and spoke to technical support. He tried having me boot into safe mode but it still would not stay connected. He then suggested that I remove the check from the Smart Network Switch box on the wifi screen and that has fixed the problem. For some reason, that feature and 4.4.4 are not playing well together. — John

I had written you earlier that I may have fixed my WiFi problem by resetting my router. I was mistaken, the problem resumed when I turned my “data” back on. Apparently my WiFi works great and my data also work great. However, if you have both on at the same time, my WiFi drops in and out. It is a pain in the arse. Like the others have mentioned this only started after my 4.4.4 update on my AT&T S5. — Matty

Greetings, I just read your last post about this issue with the S5. I have been experiencing the same problems with the wifi connection over here. I have tried most of the steps without going to the option of using the factory reset and still no luck. I even went throughout all my apps and deleted the ones that I don’t use as often and the ones that I downloaded most recently. Something that is working for now, is to turn off the “smart network switch” so far this has worked for me. I figure I could provide some input based on what’s working for some people. Thanks, Ed.

Hi, I saw in one of your Galaxy S5 Problems articles that someone was having problems keeping a WiFi connection on their S5. I had this exact problem myself after upgrading to lollipop, but I fixed it by switching off Smart Network Switch in the WiFi settings. My WiFi connection is now stable and although it’s only been a couple of days, I haven’t discovered any drawbacks to having this feature switched off. Hope this helps! — Ali

Galaxy S5 Says It Has The Latest Firmware

Question: Hi TDG, Not really much info I can include here. I have a g900f model of the S5 bought from amazon and came unlocked. I’m j the uk and using both ota update and kies it tells me that I have the latest updates installed. Which is 4.4.2. Why am I not getting the update like other uk S5 owners? Regards, Daniel.

Answer: Hi Daniel. Updates are often rolled out in batches. While others already started receiving notifications about the Lollipop update, yours is still stuck with Kitkat. But frankly speaking, there’s nothing we can do for now but wait until the phone gets the notification. It will come for sure. Of course, from time to time, try to manually search for updates in your phone or through Kies. At least, we already know that Samsung already rolled out updates for the S5.

Galaxy S5 Shows Unified Daemon Has Stopped Error

Problem: I continually get error message “Unfortunately, Unified Daemon has stopped.” Why am I getting this and what does it mean? How do I clear?

I’ve checked on line and see how for S4 – but my settings doesn’t have that path that the S4 directions are providing. Help! —              


Troubleshooting: Unified Daemon is a service that works with Weather, News and Stock apps. It aggregates data from Yahoo Finance, Yahoo News and and among the apps that use this service are Camera, Alarm, Desk Clock, S Planner and Briefing. If the service crashed, it’s difficult to tell what caused it, although, the most effective troubleshooting procedure is to clear its cache and data. However, before you follow the steps below, make sure you have an internet connection because it’s possible that the lack of internet connectivity caused the problem.

  1. From any Home screen, tap Apps.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Scroll to ‘APPLICATIONS,’ then tap Application manager.
  4. Swipe right to the DOWNLOADED screen.
  5. Scroll to and tap Unified Daemon.
  6. Tap Clear cache button.
  7. Tap Clear data button, then OK.

Galaxy S5 Draining Battery Quicker

Problem: Hey, so I’ve had my Galaxy for less than a year now and I’ve noticed that the battery has been draining really fast now. I don’t have any new apps on my phone and all the settings have been the same. It just says that the Android OS and Android System has been draining the battery. It’s driving me crazy and the only solutions I could find was turning off a ton of applications on my phone which I’d prefer not to do. I’ve also had problems with the WiFi connecting and the disconnecting and it’s been happening everywhere I go. Please help. Thanks, Ziggy.

Troubleshooting: Hi Ziggy, I believe the root cause of the problem in your phone, especially the quick draining of the battery, is the constant disconnection and reconnection of the WiFi. Your problem is the same as the first issue I cited in this post. So, I suggest you follow the same troubleshooting to either disable mobile data completely or just disable the Smart Network Switch option.

Lollipop Is Slower Than Kitkat on Galaxy S5

Question: This is my 3rd message to you. 2 days ago I updated my galaxy s5 to lollipop 5.0 but it seems to be slower than kitkat. I cleared the cache and wiped data (factory reset) but nothing changed. The only good thing about this update is that the battery is draining slower which is a good improvement. So please what is your point of view about my issue? Or should I go back to kitkat? Thanks. Best regard, Fesalinho.

Answer: Hi Fesalinho. I understand your concern and question well but it’s just so complicated for us to provide you an accurate answer because we haven’t tested the device ourselves. Besides, your statement “seems to be slower” shows that even you isn’t sure if Lollipop is really slower than Kitkat. But assuming it is, in what aspect?

You know, in order to know what the device can offer you with the new firmware, hard reset it. Use the device without any third-party apps; such performance is the best it can offer. But you said you already did this. So, the decision is to roll back to Kitkat is yours to make. You can manually flash the previous firmware.

Galaxy S5 Fingerprint Scanner Crashed

Problem: Hi, my Galaxy s5 started to have an error when I try to use the fingerprint scanner as the lockscreen. It pops up saying “an error has occurred with the fingerprint scanner. If this message appears repeatedly restart your device.” Well I have restarted it multiple times and while this doesn’t affect my daily usage, it is a possible glitch that annoys me. I hope that there is a possible solution or even an explanation for why this is happening. Thanks — Erik

Troubleshooting: I encountered a couple of issues like this before only that we knew back then a third-party app caused them. So, it was easy for us to fix it; we just uninstalled the app that cause the problems and everything was back to normal.

In your case, since we don’t know what caused it, then I suggest you backup your data and perform full hard reset (if you’re not rooted):

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, and Power key.
  3. When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
  4. When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
  5. Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  8. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  9. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  10. Press the Power key to restart the device.

If, however, the phone has been rooted, then there’s an easy way to fix this without having to reset the phone–install Titanium Backup and wipe the data of the Fingerprints app. That will take care of the problem for you.

Galaxy S5 Has Issues With MicroSD Card

Problem: I had the S4 and now I have the S5 and with both of the phones I have had problems with the SD card. When I put in the card it works fine for a few days to about a week but them the pictures start corrupting. When I open my picture gallery either the pictures are turning gray or they’re showing up as unreadable files. I don’t know what the problem is but I have tried multiple memory cards and all have had the same problem. I don’t know if I’m the only one having a problem but I even change my phone multiple times to see if it was a phone but its not that ether. Let me know if you have any idea on what the problem is and how to fix it. — Ryan

Troubleshooting: Hey, Ryan! It would take a lot of time observing the device and its behavior to know which one has an issue. Apparently, we are in no position to tell you which to tell if the phone has the problem or if it were the microSD card malfunctioning. The best thing you can do, at least, is make a copy of your data in the microSD card and reformat it using FAT32 format. After that, observe the phone closely if the problem remained. If so, try a different card with FAT32 format and if the problem persisted, it’s time you had the phone checked by a technician.

Lollipop Fixed Issue With Font Color in Galaxy S5

This problem was sent to us last week and weren’t able to include it in our posts. Basically, the problem that Paul reported was that the font color on his phone was changed and worse, the text has the same color as the background. He emailed us back saying that the recent Lollipop update fixed the problem for him. Thanks, Paul!

Problem: Hi, I have a Samsung Galaxy S5 Model SM-G900V on the Verizon network. I am trying to find a way to change the default font color on the phone. The color is white and I have a few apps that I cannot read the text because the text is the same color as the background. I checked with Verizon with no luck and with Samsung with no help either. Is there an app that I can download to change the color of the font or a workaround that you are aware of to fix this issue. Thank you, Paul.

Solution: Hi I just wanna put a comment about the a new lollipop I just downloaded from verizon if I had no problems downloading it I connected the phone to my computer and it went smooth.

I wrote to you about a week or two ago concerning white text on my phone and not being able to change the color of my text lollipop resolve this issue and all my text is black. — Paul

Undoing Clear Cache on Galaxy S5

Problem: Hello. I have a Samsung Galaxy S5. Ok so my phone was running slow..and i also wanted to free up space and I am not the smartest when it comes to this stuff. So I cleared the caches for some of the apps that came with the phone. Now every day the caches load and my phone acts crazy while this happens. Can I reverse the clear cache? I noticed this by going to settings : application manager: running apps: and noticed all of the apps and the cache is loading up from 0 every morning. This uses energy and makes my phone behavior odd. Hope this makes sense. Thank you, Melissa.

Troubleshooting: Hi, Melissa! No, you can’t reverse the clear cache procedure. Once those caches are deleted, there’s no way for you to recover them. However, the phone will create newer ones during boot up. I don’t know which apps are doing this but caches don’t actually make an impact on the phone’s overall performance. So, if the phone is acting “crazy” (and I’m not sure what you meant by this), something else might be causing it and that’s what you need to find out. However, I think wiping the entire cache partition will help fix the issue. So, please, follow these steps (don’t worry, your data will remain intact):

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, and Power key.
  3. When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
  4. When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
  5. Press the Volume Down key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  6. Press the Power key to select.
  7. When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  8. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Lollipop Update Interrupted on Galaxy S5

Problem: Hi, I was wondering if you could provide me with any help. I’ve got two Samsung Galaxy s5’s, Wednesday night I got the ota update on the galaxy that I use and everything updated and it’s working fine. However, my wife’s galaxy never got the update so I called technical support last night. The last was very rude, but she did say she was going to push the update through to the phone. Within seconds I seen the notification the it was downloading, but after no more than a minute the notification disappeared and it stopped updating. I’ve tried updating it by going to about device and searching for the update as well. It will start to download it then will say that the download was interrupted and makes me wait 24 hours to search again. I also tried downloading the update in safe mode, same results as before. Do I need to get a warranty replacement or can this be fixed? Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, have a great day. — Justin

Suggestion: Hi, Justin! If the representative was able to push the update to your phone, then it is most likely they will be able to help you with it. Now, if you insist to have the phone replaced and it is still within the replacement period, then you can have it replaced with a brand new unit. However, if the phone is now outside the replacement period, the device maybe replaced but with a refurbished one. I’m sure you don’t want that. So, the best option is to call tech support again and have the representative push the update and to make sure things will be smooth, have him or her stay with you on the phone until the update is completed. It may sound so cruel considering these people have to handle a lot of calls a day and may have been instructed to keep calls under 10 minutes, but you’re a customer and you already tried calling but the update wasn’t completed. You may also try using Samsung Kies through your computer to pull the update down.

Galaxy S5 Screen Problem, LDI Is Positive

Problem: Hoping you can help. Purchased a Galaxy S5 just ONE month ago for my son. This weekend, the screen quit working and the water mark on the inside says it has water damage. However, it was NOT dropped in water….WORST case, it got too warm or too cold in pocket… but NOT wet.  

Have you seen or heard of any issues like this? It does have a manufacturer warranty but if the water mark is compromised the water is not valid. Any advice you could give would be GREATLY appreciated. — Beth

Suggestion: Hi Beth. You know Samsung and its official retailers follow a very strict rule on who gets the warranty and who doesn’t. One of the things they check is the Liquid Damage Indicator (LDI) and if that little sticker says the phone was exposed in liquid, then there’s nothing you would say that will matter.

The phone cannot be replaced, and if repaired, you will have to pay for the services. Now, taking into consideration that the phone gets too warm, it is safe to assume some of the components may have already been compromised. Needless to say you need to have it checked by a technician. I can’t think of any troubleshooting procedures for this kind of problem.

Is It Ok To Install Firmware for Another Country?

Question: Hi! I have a galaxy S5 (SM-G900F). I bought it as an unlocked phone, so it’s not carrying any carrier software.

I want to move up to lollipop and I have been seen in the sammobile there’s no software for my country (Colombia), but there’s a lot of country’s there’s.

Do I have to wait until samsung release firmware for my country or can I install the firmware of another country? I’m attaching a caption of the countries that are available at this time in sammobile. Thanks for the help! — Julian

Answer: Before anything else, the safest route to updating your Galaxy S5 is to wait for Samsung to roll out the update for your country. However, if you can’t wait any longer and want to take the risk, then you can manually flash the available firmware for units with the same model as yours but proceed at your own risk.
