The #Samsung #Galaxy #S5 is a 2014 flagship device that has one feature that current flagship models don’t have and that is a user removable battery. The advantage of this feature is that the owner can simply swap out the battery with a new one in case something goes wrong with the old one instead of bringing the phone to a repair shop. Another notable feature of this device is its water resistance ( up to 1 meter for 30 minutes) and dust protection. While this phone is a solid performer there are also instances when issues can occur. In this latest installment of our troubleshooting series we will tackle the Galaxy S5 charges when off issue & other related problems.

S5 Only Charges When Off
Problem: Samsung s5 is not charging or downloading pics from cell when the cell is ON. However, when turn off the cell then charging starts. I have done all the methods which are mentioned in the website, but could not solve the problem. Sometimes it happens that during charging when turn on the cell it continues to charge the cell. It seems charging port and charging battery cover (port cover) do not follow the Samsung charging software. Often, cell also showing message “check battery cover” though it is already closed. I have already done factory setting process, still getting prob.
Related Problem: In the past 2 or 3 weeks my Galaxy S5 has been unable to charge while turned on and charges extremely slowly when turned off. On 100% charge the battery will only last about 4 hours, when it used to be that I could hold charge for over a day. I tried safe mode and a soft reset but I don’t think that actually worked.
Solution: For this issue you should try cleaning the charging port of your phone first as dirt stuck in the port could be causing the problem. Use a can of compressed air or blow into the port using a straw to clean it.
Try using a different charging cord and wall charger when charging your phone. You should also get a new battery and check if the old battery is causing this issue.
If the issue still persist then it’s possible that the charging port is defective. Bring your phone to a service center and have it checked.
S5 Only Vibrates When Charging
Problem: Hello! i have a Samsung galaxy s5. My original cable peeled so i bought a new one (supposedly original). It worked perfect with my original wall adapter. Yesterday i plugged in the phone to my PC with the same cable. It worked fine. Later when i tried charging my phone with the wall adapter, it didn’t charge and the power sharing pop up popped up. I only had 2% battery left so it turned off. when i plug it in it vibrates various times (short but continued) but it doesn’t charge with the wall adapter nor with the PC. Do you have any suggestions for me? thank you! ps. i don’t remember the android version (but i have not downloaded the latest software update which came up a few days ago)
Solution: It looks like this issue is caused by a connection problem between the charger and the phone. Listed below are the troubleshooting steps that you need to do in cases like this. Perform each step below then check if the issue still occurs. Move to the next step if the issue remains unresolved.
- Clean the charging port of your phone. Dirt or debris that’s stuck in this port can usually cause charging problems. When cleaning the port use a can of compressed air or blow into it using a straw.
- Try using a different charging cord. This cord gets easily damaged especially if it is constantly coiled and bent.
- Try using a different wall charger.
- Try replacing the battery with a new one.
- To eliminate any software problems that might be causing this issue you should backup your phone data then do a factory reset.
If the above steps fail to fix the issue then I recommend you have your phone checked at a service center as this could already be a hardware related problem.
S5 Keeps On Restarting
Problem: Hi, I have a Samsung Galaxy S5. My phone was working just fine until it kept restarting until I didn’t plug in my charger. Once i would take it out, it would work just fine. I realized it would happen whenever I would open up Snapchat. So i decided to uninstall it. But then again my phone would keep restarting until I didn’t plug it in. My battery was always between 80-90%. Now my phone doesn’t even turn on while the charger is in. It comes to the samsung colorful logo and then restarts again and again. Sometimes it will go to the lockscreen but then just a second later it starts restarting.
Solution: The first thing that you should do for this type of issue is to check if a glitch in the phone software is causing the problem. To do this you will have to backup your phone data then do a factory reset. Once the reset is complete do not install any apps in your phone just yet. Try to check first if the issue still occurs. If it does then the next step is to check if the battery is causing the problem by replacing it with a new one.
If the above steps fail to fix the problem then you should bring your phone to a service center and have it checked.
S5 Keeps On Restarting With New microSD Card
Problem: i have been using my S5 for two years, but never update the Android. Recently i got a new 64GB microSDHC to replace my old 16GB microSD (without copy anything onto the new card), it was fine in the first hour, until i took about 10 photos, the phone kept restarting for some reason. It is perfectly fine after i swapped back to my old card. Many Thanks for the help!
Solution: It looks like the new microSD card might have some corrupt sectors. Backup any of the photos that you have stored in this card then format it using your phone. Once the format is complete try taking photos again and make sure that the photos are stored in the microSD card. If the issue remains then you will have to get a new card.
S5 Battery Drains Fast
Problem: I’ve got an S5 that had battery problems so I got a new battery and did 2 factory resets. The new battery was tested in an older S5 and worked perfectly but on this one, even after the reset, it drains unbelievably fast…clearly it cannot be the battery. I even shut the phone done for 3 hrs and when I turned it back on, the battery had drained from 80% to 30% while powered off. How is that possible with a new battery and after a reset? Any info/advice would be greatly appreciated. I’ve also cleared the partition cache and no change…
Related Problem: The battery is draining very fast. I’ve purchased a new battery, dumped the cache (per TDG post instructions) and booted in Safe Mode (also per TDG post) all to no avail. I have uninstalled some apps but I’m just not sure what to try next. The battery used to last all day and now it’s dead by mid afternoon.
Solution: There could be a shorted circuit in our phone that’s causing the battery to drain quickly. What you can do is to try to clean the charging port of your phone using a can of compressed air or by blowing into it using a straw. Your aim is to take out any dirt or debris present in the port that could be causing the problem. If the issue still persist after this then I suggest you have your phone checked at a service center.
S5 Turns Off While Charging
Problem: My Samsung Galaxy S5 has begun turning itself off even while the battery is still charging, but not only does it go off it just keeps trying to restart & doesn’t get as far as the colorful SAMSUNG start up screen only to disable again. Repeating the vicious cycle until it is actually plugged in and i manually turn it on. Even then the allotted time i am being able to use my phone is becoming less & less.
Solution: You will need to check if the phone software is causing this problem by doing a factory reset. Make sure to backup your phone data before doing the reset. Once the reset is complete do not install anything in your phone yet. Try to check first if the issue still occurs. If it does then the next step is to eliminate any battery related problems that could be causing this issue by replacing the battery with a new one.
If the above steps fail to fix the problem then you should have your phone checked at a service center as this could already be a hardware related issue.
S5 Restarts On Its Own
Problem: Hello, I’ve seen your post about how to fix Samsung Galaxy S5 that turns off. I have a problem similar to those you’ve talked about, but not quite the same. A few months ago my phone started to restart on its own. it’s not connected to any drops on the floor or anything like that. I installed the update week or two before the problem had started. maybe the update is the problem. but I tried to put the old update and the situation is the same. then I tried to reset it completely, to put on the default settings and erase all the things on the phone. It still shuts down and turns on a few times a day. It happens when the light should go on, for example when I press the button to unlock it, it restarts also when I talk on the phone, the light goes of and the moment when I move the phone from my ear (when it’s supposed to light up) it restarts. when alarm should go on, it restarts. I went to the mobile store and they can’t find the problem. I don’t know what to do, can you help me? Thanks!!
Solution: The best thing that you can do right now is to replace your phone battery with a new one to check if the battery is causing this problem. If the issue remains then it is most likely caused by a component inside your phone that’s failing. If this is the case then I recommend that you have your phone checked at a service center that’s capable of performing board level repairs.
S5 Incompatible Charger Warning
Problem: Phone continues to display the incompatible charger warning even though the factory charger is hooked up. This did not happen until after the system wide update that was sent out a few months ago. Also, 70% of my contacts disappeared after the update.
Solution: The phone will usually show this error message if the charger is not providing the correct amount of current to the device. Sometimes this is caused by a defective charging cord, charger or some dirt in the charging port. Below are the recommended troubleshooting steps that you need to do for this type of problem.
- Clean the charging port of your phone using a can of compressed air or by blowing into it using a straw. Make sure to take out any dirt or debris that could be present in this port.
- Use a different charging cord
- Use a different wall charger
- Backup your phone data then do a factory reset.
