Hello guys. In this post, I will address some call-related issues with Samsung Galaxy S4 (#Samsung #GalaxyS4) as we received a lot of emails from our readers. Many said their issues occurred after updating their phones to Android 5.0 Lollipop while others reported that their issues started without apparent reason.
The first problem I cited here is a bit complicated because the owner actually encountered multiple issues two months after unlocking the phone. Unlocking is always safe as it doesn’t require any tweaks in the system. So, I believe it’s really not the cause of the problem here.
The second problem is a common one–phone can’t receive calls after an update. It might be common and it is often a network-related problem but there is always a chance it’s a firmware issue. Therefore, it is necessary to perform a master reset before calling the provider. After all, your provider will still ask you to reset your phone as part of its “basic” troubleshooting procedure.
Read on to know some other issues I addressed here and how to fix them. Multiple issues with Galaxy S4 after unlocking
Problems: I got this “locked” S4 in 2014 from ATT store, then paid off the balance and got the unlock code from ATT “officially”, and since May 2014 using the unlocked S4 without trouble in US, Europe, Asia. Recently, I put a ATT pre-paid GP SIM card in my phone and many problems started as follows.
- The phone does not ring for incoming calls or alarms or notifications. If I restart the phone then it works for about 2-3 calls (making or receiving) and then again above problem repeats (until I restart again)
- When I make calls out, I don’t hear key press tones, the phone ringing at the other end and when my phone is picked up I don’t hear the other person voice (but they do mine; sometimes). Same problem with Skype. Again this problem “temporarily” goes away when I restart.
- After using camera, emails, calling a 2-3 time etc activities, the phone seems to just freeze. Pressing power button does not do anything. If I hold off for 4-5 minutes then the phone starts again, but the above 2 errors are almost guaranteed and I have no option but to restart the phone.
Sometimes I get error message (depending on the application I am using) like: process.andoid not working, phone.process.android not working… do you want to wait to kill the app. This message does not always come so I don’t remember the exact message. if I tap “kill”, then the device hangs after some time, If I say “wait” after 3-5 minutes I can see the screen but not use phone/gmail etc. Again I have to restart.
- I have tried a few suggestions you have given like:
- Remove battery, SIM card and put back after 10-20 seconds
- Press volume +, menu and power button and then select clear RAM/wipe cache partition.
- Factory reset the phone
- Delete all photo and high MB files so that more than 70% of phone memory is free
- Tried solutions a, b and c a few times each!
Nothing has worked so far with me and I need your advice/help. I am not sure if I this is ATT issue (because of unlocking phone? but then it worked perfectly fine in US for past 3-4 months)? Is it android issue? Is it Samsung issue? Please help, Sumeet.
Troubleshooting: First of all, unlocking is always safe; it’s a network thing and it simply takes away the “lock” so the device can be used with other network. So, I, too, believe the unlocking didn’t cause this problem.
The error message “Unfortunately, the Process com.android.phone has stopped” is indicative of a firmware issue, although it’s triggered by the Phone or Dialer app. There is a possibility that the phone app just crashes, which may also explain why the phone won’t ring if there are incoming calls. That being said, the most logical procedure you can do for now is to clear the cache and data of the Dialer.
- From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap the More tab.
- Tap Application manager.
- Swipe left or right to go to the All tab.
- Scroll to and tap Dialer.
- Tap Clear cache.
- Tap Clear data, then OK.
If this procedure failed to fix the problem, backup your data and perform a master reset. It’s basically just like factory reset, which you’ve done already, but it does a little bit more like reformat the data partition and delete all corrupt data.
- Switch your phone off.
- Hold down the Power, Volume Up and Home buttons at the same time for about 10 seconds. Release them when the Android logo appears on the screen. This will bring up the unlock/reset menu.
- To navigate through this menu, use the volume up/down buttons to scroll up and down and the power button to confirm selections.
- Scroll down and select Wipe Data/Factory Reset.
- Scroll down and select Yes – Delete All User Data.
- When prompted, scroll to and select Reboot System Now. The phone will then reboot to its factory settings.
We really can’t say for sure whose fault it is but if it’s firmware related, AT&T and Samsung technicians can help you.
Samsung Galaxy S4 can’t receive calls after lollipop update
Problem: Ever since the 5.0 update I have had a few problems with my phone. First and important one is that I can not receive calls on my phone. Many people including my boss complain that they make several calls to my phone and it rings or goes straight to voicemail. So I miss many calls through the day and it aggravates me that people that need to call me can’t. Second it started saying sim card removed so I replaced the sim card reader and it still did it so i did more research and did a wipe system cache and so far i haven’t seen it again. If you could help me in any possible way I would appreciate it.
Troubleshooting: While it looks like it’s more of a network issue, I want you to backup all your data and perform a master reset (follow steps above) since the problem started after a major firmware update. If the problem persists though, call your service provider because now we can say it’s really a network problem.

One contact won’t appear on Galaxy S4
Problem: Hi, I have a problem with my Samsung S4 mobile. My problem is that in the editing of one of my contacts I have written the persons first name but after I save it the first name doesn’t appear.
Troubleshooting: You said you edited it, right? Well, let’s call it a glitch but that’s not important. To work around this, just delete the contact and create a new one bearing the same details. I hope this helps.
Can’t make outgoing and can’t receive incoming calls
Problem: I can not make or receive a call. When I dial out, the call connects, but I can’t hear anyone on the other end, and they can not hear me either. This happens with in coming and out going calls. I have removed the battery, for a soft reset, but did not resolve the problem. I called the carrier from another device, was told to look in the apps for the phone app, there are 3 of them! Should only be 1 installed!! so they told me to bring it into a store and have it fixed….it is past its warranty, and I can not afford another phone right now….Please help!
Troubleshooting: Here’s what I need you to do:
First, boot the phone safe mode disable all other phone apps that are running.
Try to make an outgoing call to test if the person on the other end can hear you and vice versa.
If the problem was fixed in safe mode, then it’s confirmed that one of your downloaded apps caused the problem. Try to uninstall all other phone apps as that could be the root cause of the problem.
After you installed those apps or if you don’t know which app is causing the trouble, then it’s time your performed the master reset (follow the instructions above).
- Turn the device off completely.
- Press and hold the Power button.
- Once the Samsung Galaxy S4 logo appears on the screen, release the Power button.
- As soon as you release the Power button, press and hold the Volume Down key.
- Continue holding the Volume Down key until the phone has completed the reboot process.
- If you can read ‘Safe Mode’ at the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume Down key. Otherwise, repeat the process until you can boot the phone to Safe Mode.
Galaxy S4 can’t detect the SIM card
Problem: The phone doesn’t read the SIM. Asked to restart because SIM is missing but after the restart it doesn’t read again. Thanks. Regards, Mario.
Troubleshooting: You need to know if the problem is with the SIM card or with the phone. So, here’s what I need you to do:
- Open the back cover of your phone and physically unmount the SIM card. Then, mount it back but make sure it’s positioned properly and then turn your phone on and wait until it detects signal or says it can’t detect the SIM card.
- If the phone can’t detect the SIM card even if it’s properly mounted, try inserting a different SIM card to see if it can detect it, if not, then it’s the phone. It can be a firmware issue or a hardware problem. Rule out the former by performing master reset.
- In case the phone detects a different SIM card, then call your provider and request for a new SIM card. It’s usually free but you will have to wait for 5 to 10 days.
- If the phone still can’t detect a SIM card after a master reset, send it in for repair.
Galaxy S4 call connects but owner can’t hear
Problem: I dial a call and the call connects but I can’t hear the ringing and when the party picks up I can’t hear them and they can’t hear me. When I receive a call it rings and I pick up but I don’t hear anything and they don’t hear me. I upgraded to 5.0.1 this week.
Suggestion: If the problem occurred immediately after an update, try to wipe the cache partition and if that fails, do the master reset (instructions above).
Wipe Cache Partition
- Turn off the device.
- Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, Power key
- When the phone vibrates, let go of the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
- When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
- Press the Volume Down key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
- Press the Power key to select. The phone will automatically restart after the cache is wiped.
On the other hand, if the problem already occurred prior to the update, then it’s probably a hardware issue. You need to have the phone checked by a technician.
