The mobile phone was invented to allow the placing of calls while a person is moving around. Since its commercial availability on the early 80’s it has evolved to add more features aside from calling. Today, with smartphones such as the #Samsung Galaxy #Note4, we can not only make calls but access the Internet among other things.
Several of our readers however have sent us some call related issues that they are experiencing on their device which we will be addressing today. In this latest installment of our troubleshooting series we will tackle the Galaxy Note 4 can’t make calls & other related issues.

Note 4 Phone App Closes
Problem: When making calls, I bring up the contact in the phone app, hit the green button to make the call, then the phone app closes and goes to the home screen (I have watched it close and home screen come up). I have a folder of my most used contacts, and I thought it was related to that because it seemed to mostly happen when calling my husband (hmmmm… maybe my phone is jealous.).But I’ve recently noticed it happening to most, but not all, calls I make, even those manually dialed. It’s annoying. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve made a call, put phone to ear and waited like a dummy for the call to connect, only to find I’m back on the home screen. Please help. Thank you.
Solution: You should try to check first if a third party app you installed in your phone is causing this problem. To do this just start your phone in Safe Mode. In this mode the phone only allows the pre-installed apps to run while those apps you downloaded are disabled. Thi makes it easier to check if an app is causing the problem. Once your phone is in Safe Mode try making a call. If the problem does not occur then it’s most likely caused by an app. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.
If the problem still occurs in Safe Mode then restart your phone. The next troubleshooting steps will concentrate on your phone’s temporary data. If this data is corrupt then it may cause this issue. Proceed with clearing the cache and data of your phone app. Follow this up by wiping the cache partition of your phone. Try to check if the issue still occurs.
If at this point the problem remains unresolved then you should verify if this issue occurs in only a particular area. See if this happens in your home, office, or even in the mall. If it occurs in a specific area then it may be a network related issue possibly due to low signal,
As a last resort you can also backup your phone data then do a factory reset. Once the reset has finished check if you can make calls.
Note 4 Not Recognizing Conference Call Passcode
Problem: When I try to call into a conference call for work, I am required to type a passcode to enter the call. Many times, when I get to this point, the conference call will not recognize the digits I am entering and acts as if I did not enter any codes then disconnects. Other times, this is not a problem. I have tried to see if I am doing anything differently for any of the attempts, but I repeat exact same steps each time.
Solution: Try checking your phone’s DTMF (Dual-tone multi-frequency) setting first as this is usually where the problem lies in most cases like this.
- From the Home screen, tap Phone
- From the Keypad tab, tap the Menu icon Menu icon
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Call.
- From the Other call settings section, tap DTMF tones
If the DTMF tone is set to normal then try switching this to long then check if the problem still occurs.
Note 4 Poor Call Quality
Problem: I have had problems with voice calls from day one.. Before I installed any apps. I was told, and I stupidly believed is that I can’t get good reception because the area is some sort of “”black hole “” for decent signal. It doesn’t matter where I try to make a call from, I have the same problem. Using earbuds makes it a tad better, but voice quality still sucks. At the same time, if I have an incoming call, I don’t always have my earbuds plugged in… By the time I find them, the caller has his be up. The other party says my voice keeps cutting out, and their voice is completely garbled! I’ve had this phone since January, and nothing has been resolved. I don’t have phone service now, as I got tired of paying $86 a month for service I can’t make or receive decent calls on. I got fed up with the BS quite frankly. I can be reached through email or HANGOUTS on Google +.
Solution: In most cases where call quality is an issue it’s usually caused by network related factors. The signal may be poor or there may be network issues in the area.
If however the problem is not isolated in a particular area alone then the phone may have a problem. To check if this is a software related problem you should backup your phone data then do a factory reset.
Try making a call immediately after the factory reset.
You should also try making a call using a Wi-Fi connection and Skype. If the problem also occurs when using Skype then this may already be hardware related.
I suggest you bring your phone to an authorized service center and have it checked.
Note 4 Phone Gets Disconnected After An Hour Of Call
Problem: Whenever my friend calls me, we’ll get disconnected after about an hour or longer. He will get a recorded message saying that my phone isn’t in service. I have my bill paid. The only thing I have done differently is the changing of my plans. I’m wondering if there is something wrong with my phone since he doesn’t have this problem with anyone else he calls. It doesn’t happen if I call him.
Solution: Have you noticed if the problem occurs in a specific area? If it does then it may be a network related issue probably due to congestion which usually causes some calls to be disconnected. This will however depend on the number of users connected to a particular cell tower and if this tower has reached its maximum capacity then there is a chance the call may get disconnected.
Since the issue does not occur when you call the other party then the issue is most likely not caused by your phone. You could however try to restart your phone before making or accepting a long call to reset your phone’s connection to the network and see if this helps.
Note 4 Resets When Call Is Made
Problem: I am having issues whenever I make a call my screen goes completely black and totally resets my phone this has happened several times and is making me mad. What could it be?
Solution: This problem may be caused by some form of corrupt data in your phone. If this is the case then backup your phone data then do a factory reset.
If the issue still persists after the reset then connect your phone to its wall charger then make a call. If your phone does not reset then the problem may be with its battery. Try getting a new one.
If the problem still persists even if you connect your phone to a wall charger then this may already be hardware related. I suggest you bring your phone to an authorized service center and have it checked.
Note 4 Can’t Call Using 4G Signal
Problem: I recently added a Sim 4g on my notes 4 (Android 5.1.1); when switching to 4g network data works but I cannot call. When i switch back To 3g I have no problems either with data or voice call. What could be the problem?
Solution: Try to contact your carrier’s technical support hotline as this appears to be a provisioning issue which can easily be resolved in their end.
