New BlackBerry OS update brings Android apps via Amazon Appstore

BlackBerry Amazon

BlackBerry has started issuing the version 10.3.1 update to customers of all BlackBerry 10 OS running devices. This update will finally include support for Android apps downloaded from the Amazon Appstore.

The likes of Z10, Q10, and Z30 are eligible for this new update, so if you own either of these handsets, now might be the right time to take it out and check for a system update.

The update also brings BlackBerry Assistant, which is a virtual assistant and will serve as an alternative to Google Now, Siri, Cortana etc.

Users should be able to install the Amazon Appstore after the update is downloaded, giving you access to thousands of free and paid Android titles. Although there should be no compatibility related issues, don’t be surprised if you run into some functionality glitches while running some of these apps as they weren’t built for BlackBerry OS. Customers will still be able to access the BlackBerry World app hub for some exclusive BlackBerry OS applications.

This is a massive addition to BlackBerry’s repertoire as the lack of apps has been one of the things keeping people from the platform. But with that being sorted out now (at least to some extent), BlackBerry will hope that potential customers will find their devices more appealing.
