Although LG has already launched its 2020 flagship in the form of the V60 ThinQ 5G, the company is also expected to unveil the G8X successor, known as the LG G9. Well, a report from LG’s native of South Korea indicates that this smartphone may not be the flagship that many are expecting.
It is being said that the phone will come with the octa-core Snapdragon 765 chipset, which is slightly underpowered compared to the Snapdragon 865 SoC that we’ve seen on the likes of the Galaxy S20 as well as LG’s own V60 ThinQ 5G.
Thankfully, the SD765 chipset will also come with 5G capabilities onboard, making this potentially the first (of many) mid-ranged 5G smartphones to hit the global markets including the U.S. Given the similarities between LG hardware, it is likely that the phone will support the iconic Dual Screen cover as well. This cover was also sold with its 2019 flagships.
Given the fact that the Snapdragon 765 is cheaper to source, multiple manufacturers are expected to use it with their smartphones this year, including Google with its Pixel 4 successor in fall. The bad news is that the LG G9 will reportedly launch only in the second half of the year, so its hardware may go through a few more changes by then. The Nokia 8.3 is also using the Snapdragon 765, so the mid-range market could soon be crowded with 5G phones, forcing rival manufacturers to step up their technologies.
