While most places around the world still don’t have a 4G LTE (Cat 4) connection, Huawei has announced that it is planning to release a Cat 6 LTE smartphone before the year is over. President of Huawei’s consumer division for Europe Richard Ren said in an interview with uswitch that “in the coming second half of the year, we will launch the Cat 6 smartphone.”
What is a Cat 6 smartphone? It’s basically a device that can take advantage of a Cat 6 4G LTE connection. This allows it to have a download speed of up to 300mbps as compared to the 150mbps download speed of current 4G LTE smartphones.
Huawei announced last April that it has achieved Cat 6 connectivity in partnership with Qualcomm. The test made use of Huawei’s SingleRan technology as well as Qualcomm’s 4G LTE modem Gobi 9×35. The company however has not disclosed which of its upcoming smartphones will come with Cat6 features however it is more likely that its P-Series of devices will have it.
As of now Huawei still makes use of Qualcomm and MediaTek processors on their products but now that it has its HiSilicon chip it will be utilizing this in its upcoming devices. This chip is future proof and is capable of supporting Cat6 connectivity. Ren further said that “Because we have our HiSilcon chipset, we can stay a bit ahead in this industry. We will use the best chipset, for our products, to provide the better user experience. For the HiSilicon, we can have some advantage on the technology. For example, the HiSilicon chipset, is the world’s first Cat6 chipset. We are almost six months in advance of Qualcomm.”
Qualcomm has its upcoming Snapdragon 810 and Snapdragon 808 64-bit processors that supports Cat6 connectivity coming out this year. Both chips however will be shipped to OEMs by the third quarter of this year which means that the first Qualcomm devices with Cat6 connectivity features could hit the market next year.
If Huawei pushes through with its plan to release a Cat6 smartphone this year then it will give the company an advantage of several months over its competition.
The unnamed Cat 6 Huawei smartphone will be released alongside the Cat 6Huawei E5786 mobile broadband dongle which was introduced during the recently MWC 2014.
