Galaxy Note 4 display remains black or blank

Problem: I badly need your help droid guy! My Galaxy Note 4 was left charging last night but when I woke up this morning, the display won’t light up. I thought it turned itself off so I tried turning it on but it didn’t respond. I already spent more than an hour trying to do things I haven’t done before with it (and most of them I don’t really understand) to no avail.

To give you a better idea, the screen remains blank or black and the phone just won’t light up. I tried plugging it in to charge and it was showing the green light; meaning the battery is full. I’m confused but more than that, I don’t know what happened to it let alone fix this problem. I need your expertise on this. Thanks. — Jessa

Troubleshooting: Hello Jessa. There’s a glimmer of hope for you because, at least, your Note 4 still lights up the LED indicator when plugged it. That’s one sign that it may just be a minor glitch with the system.

Actually, I’ve encountered a lot of issues like this before and it’s not just the Note 4 that’s doing this, it’s common across all Android devices. The most effective troubleshooting procedure to address this problem is the soft-reset.

  1. Open the back panel of your phone.
  2. Remove the battery.
  3. While the battery is out, press and hold the Power key for a minute.
  4. Place the battery back in and then the back panel.
  5. Now turn your phone on.

Just in case the phone won’t turn on after the soft reset, try booting it to different modes such as Safe mode and Recovery mode just to find out if it’s still capable of powering itself up. If not, then there’s nothing much we can do about a phone that won’t turn on. Let a technician take a look at it.

Galaxy Note 4 display flickers after being dropped

Problem: Okay, so I was careless one sweet day and I dropped my Galaxy Note 4 on a tiled floor. The back cover was removed and I thought the battery almost came off and the phone was turned off, of course. I thought it was totally damaged already but when I attempted to turn it back on, it did! I was never happier to see my phone back to life again after it slipped my hand and hit the hard bottom but after a couple of minutes, the screen started to flicker and then the flickering disappeared and after a few minutes, it flickered again and again and such is the cycle. I understand the drop may have messed up everything for me but is there anything I can do to fix this? — Jeffrey

Related Problem: Hello! So, last night I looked at my phone to check the time and I noticed there was a message on my phone stating that my phone was overheating and that all the apps would not be able to be used at that moment (mind you, I was at work so my phone was not being used much at all – I checked a few texts and was tracking a delivery package, that’s about it). I have never seen that message so I decided to just turn my phone off to give it time to cool down. Immediately when I did that, my phone started flickering at the top part of my screen with a line going straight through it (kinda like old school tvs, when you would turn them on and off and you could see the power stripe through the tv)

I let my battery completely drain over the course of the rest of the night. When I thought that it was dead I was going to plug it in but first I tried turning it on. and it worked completely fine for a millisecond before it actually died (I turned it on and there was 1% battery remaining). So, I left it to charge. At 85% battery I turned my phone back on and immediately the screen went black and the flickering began again. On occasion I can turn my phone on but the welcome screen is extremely overexposed and it just shuts off again.

This phone is relatively new, only about 3 months old. No water damage. Minimal dropping but it is protected by a case. I currently am running on Lollipop.

Help!! I don’t know what happened! Thanks in advance! — Kathy

Suggestion: Apparently, the impact of the drop messed up the hardware in your device especially the display. There is a possibility that the drop just loosened some connections inside that’s why the screen flickers. The bad news is, there’s nothing we can do about hardware issues. So, I suggest you bring it to a shop and let a technician check it for you. Or, if you are confident enough to open your phone, then proceed at your own risk and check if it’s just a loose connection or the display was damaged.

Galaxy Note 4 display jumps between apps & flickers

Problem: Hi, my daughter was nice enough to drop my Note 4 (in an otterbox) into a bathtub full of water. I got it out, turned off and wiped down very quickly and put it into a bag of rice over night to dry out (with the back, battery, and stylus out). When I tested it out in the morning, the screen flashes between the “active apps” screen and the “select a home page” screen so fast that I can’t actually do anything. I have factory reset it and have pulled it all apart to help it dry out farther but it isn’t helping. — Amanda

Suggestion: Hello Amanda. When it comes to water damage, we really can’t tell as to what extent the damage is or what functions are affected. In your case, however, it seems like the touchscreen and/or the display suffered so much. Again, we don’t know if its current behavior is caused by liquid that may still be present in your phone or it’s the circuit board that was affected. There’s one way to find out, though. Have it checked by a technician so that proper diagnosis will be done. Then you can decide if you will spend money having the phone fixed or just buy a new one.

Galaxy Note 4 touchscreen isn’t functioning

Problem: My Galaxy Note 4 became so hot yesterday that it shut itself off automatically. After it cooled down, I turned it back on and the screen won’t respond to my touches anymore no matter what I do. So, I am interested to know what caused the overheating and if it can still be fixed. — Leonie

Troubleshooting: Hello Leonie. The problem is, we really don’t know what caused the overheating and you haven’t provided all necessary details. But based on your description, it seems to me like it’s a liquid damage that may have caused the overheating and probably affected some chips inside. The best thing for you to do is have a tech take a look at it as it sounds more like a hardware issue.
