How To DM On Twitter

If you’ve been wondering how you can message other people on Twitter, you’ve come to the right place! It might not be as straightforward as some people make it out, simply because when you go to some people’s profiles that messaging button sometimes just isn’t available. So, how exactly do you start a private conversation with someone on Twitter? If you follow along below, we’ll show you how, as it’s really simple!

Private Messaging on Twitter

It’s easy to Direct Message someone on Twitter. The first step is to find someone that you want to start a private conversation with online. Go to their profile, and then under their photo, you should see a little mail button. Click it, and you can start chatting with that person.

Sometimes that mail button isn’t there, and that could be because of a setting they have selected on their Twitter account. That setting prevents anyone and everyone from messaging them directly — that said, they have to follow you and you have to follow them for you to start a direct message conversation with them on Twitter.

How To Stop Everyone From Messaging You

If you’re on Twitter and want random people to stop messaging you, then you’ll need to open up the Twitter app. Click on your profile icon at the top left corner of the app, and click on the Settings and privacy option.

Click the button that says Privacy and safety and then under Direct Messages make sure the box that says “Receive Messages from anyone” isn’t checked. If you do want to receive messages for everyone, make sure it’s checked. It’s checked if the box is green and the little circle sits to the right.

You can also choose to send Read receipts here as well as the ability to filter out low quality messages out of your inbox.

As you can see, it’s super easy to direct message people on Twitter — generally, you just have to be following the person you want to message and they have to be following you, too!
