Google Voice app for BlackBerry shut down next week

Google Voice on BlackBerry

As the company’s regular clean up process, Google has announced that it will be shutting down two services, one next week and one on the 1st of July. The app shutting down on the 1st of July is the Google Reader, which has to be the best RSS reader app I have used in years. I am still using it on a daily basis as my source of news. It would be sad to see it go. But the service which is shutting down right next week is the Google Voice app for BlackBerry.

I am pretty much sure that there are not many people using this app even now. And that is the reason the search engine giant is planning on putting it to sleep, permanently. If I think about it, I feel sorry about the Google Reader app that even when there are quite a good number of people using the app, the company is discontinuing it.

Anyway, if you are a user of the Google Voice app on a daily basis, the company has got your loss covered. The company has another HTML 5 app which is similar to Google Voice and people who do not want to miss their beloved Google Voice app can use this instead.

Beginning next week, we’re ending support for the Google Voice App for Blackberry. For Blackberry users who want to continue using Google Voice, we recommend they use our HTML5 app, which is more secure and easier for us to keep up to date. Our HTML5 site is compatible with users with Blackberry version 6 and newer.

I guess that whoever was still using the Google Voice app, it was mainly because of the text messaging. It makes sense. But if you are one such everyday user of the Google Voice app on any platform, not just the BlackBerry, feel free to comment.
