Google updates Hangouts app for Windows and Chrome OS with a new Phone tab and improved notifications

Google has just announced an update for the Hangouts app on Windows and Chrome OS running machines. This update finally brings partially improved notifications and more importantly, a never before seen phone icon in one of the tabs.

This should let users make calls to their Google Voice contacts directly through the desktop, thus saving time. Even text messages can be sent using this tab from the computer, so it’s a pretty nifty addition provided you have a Google Voice account.

Google is asking users to reload the apps on their Chrome OS or Windows computers to see the new changes. So make sure you do that and let us know what you think of the additions Google has made. Some of the complaints with the Hangouts app still remain unresolved which has led to most users using the Chrome extension of Hangouts instead. Google is expected to make more changes to the app in the coming days.
