Galaxy S7 not getting notifications for incoming SMS [troubleshooting guide]

Hello and welcome to today’s #GalaxyS7 solutions article. In this post, we tackle a common problem that a lot of S7 users encounter — how to make their messaging app make notifications when messages arrive. We hope you’ll find this article helpful.

Today’s problem: Galaxy S7 not getting notifications for incoming SMS

Just got a new S7 2 weeks ago. i can text out but my son texted me last night and this morning and there was no indication of the text. To clarify this, usually I get a red dot indicating a new text msg. when I enter the text message screen I would see a red dot beside any new texts I have not read yet. I this case my son texted 2 times and no indicator light. Therefore, I assumed he did not text me and I missed my appointment with him. Any thoughts on how to fix this? Thanks. — Doug

How to fix an issue when your Galaxy S7 does not make notifications for SMS

SMS notification is the function of notification options under Settings app. Like any other feature, it can be affected by factors that may be out of your control. However, solutions for notifications-related issues are usually easy to do and effective. Below are the troubleshooting steps that you can try:

Solution #1: Ensure that your son did send you SMS

For this particular scenario above, we want to make sure that you indeed received your son’s messages. Is there a chance that you may have simply forgotten that you’ve already checked them? If you are positive that your S7 did receive the SMS texts but you never checked them at all, then go ahead and proceed to the next troubleshooting steps.

Solution #2: Redo your messaging app’s notification settings

Making sure to double check how you set your messaging app notifications up should not hurt. Doing it really simple and straightforward. To do that, follow the steps below:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Tap Messages (or whatever messaging app you’re using).
  4. Tap Notifications.
  5. If available, tap the blue circle with an “iand make sure that notifications is set to ON.
  6. Go back to the previous section and make sure that Allow notifications is enabled.
  7. Make sure that Show silently is OFF.
  8. If preferred, you can also let your S7 show your messages even when the screen is locked by selecting Show content under On lock screen.
  9. Also, if you regularly use Do not disturb feature during the night, make sure that you enable Set as priority to On.

Now that you’ve set your messaging app’s notification settings up, have someone send you a message and see if notifications is back working normally again.

Solution #3: Clear data of BadgeProvider app

BadgeProvider app is one of the default apps in Android that alerts users of new things that they may want like new versions of apps, new missed call alerts, new messages, among other things. Clearing its data will not delete your messages so you can do it anytime. Just to be on the safe side though, we suggest that you back everything up including your messages using Smart Switch.

To clear Badgeprovider app’s data, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Settings menu either through your notification shade (drop-down) or through the Settings app in your app drawer.
  2. Navigate down to “Apps”. This may be renamed to something like Applications or Application Manager in OEM skinned versions of Android 6 or 7.
  3. Once in there, look for BadgeProvider app and tap it. If you can’t find the app, tap the More settings icon (three-dot icon) at the upper right, then tap Show system apps. Look for BadgeProvider app and tap it.
  4. You’ll now see a list of stuff that gives you information about the app, including Storage, Permissions, Memory Use, and more. These are all clickable items. You’ll want to click on Storage.
  5. Tap Clear Data button.

Once you’ve wiped the data of BadgeProvider app, restart the phone and see what happens.

Solution #4: Clear cache and data of messaging app

Should wiping the data of BadgeProvider app won’t help, the next step is to return your messaging app’s settings to their defaults. You can do that by wiping its data. The steps should be the same as the ones provider for BadgeProvider app above.

Solution #5: Try using another messaging app

There’s a chance that there may be a messaging app bug due to some unique variables in your device so to eliminate the possibility of that from happening, try to use another app for SMS. There are many messaging apps that you can use in Google Play Store so feel free to use any of them to see if our suspicion is right.

Solution #6: Perform a Factory reset

A more drastic step would be to wipe the phone and start from scratch. This can be achieved by doing a factory reset. Just make sure to create a backup of your important files first before you proceed. To factory reset your S7, follow these steps:

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Find and tap Settings and then touch Backup and reset.
  3. Tap Factory data reset and touch Reset device.
  4. If you have screen lock feature turned on, enter your password or PIN.
  5. Touch Continue.
  6. Tap Delete all to confirm your action.

Solution #7: Follow what Jeff has tried

Jeff, like you, is one of our readers who happened to encounter notification issue on the same device. Take a look at his account and see if you can fix the problem by doing what he tried. Here’s his story:

Well my issue is more of a solution than an issue. I have a Galaxy S7. My messaging notifications we’re not coming in for a particular caller. I tried changing he notification tone. Making sure notifications were on ect. I seen this question in lots of forums. What I found was eventually I found LOL. When I pulled up her profile and went to edit from inside either the messaging or contacts app. At the very bottom of the badge for her profile there is a little alarm Bell that I must have hit accidentally. even though I had notifications on hers were muted. I clicked the little alarm Bell I believe it says notifications by it and then it started to work. I think many people could benefit from this knowledge. Thanks for the good work. — Jeffbuallsjensen
