Galaxy S7 edge screen is damaged and keeps flickering, My Files app won’t open, other issues

Problem 1: Galaxy S7 stuck in recovery mode

I have a Galaxy S7 which I bought about 6-7 months ago. Now, a few days ago after the Android 7 update, it would not complete the update process and started to go into the recovery boot mode endlessly. Finally after a hard set (thanks to the instructions on your webpage) I was able to update the phone to Android 7. It worked OK for a few days but since I have downloaded some of the previous apps it has started to do the same thing.

This morning when I tried opening one of the apps, it froze and ever since then after I tried the simulated battery pull and it went into the constant ‘recovery booting..’ state. I removed the SIM card, (it does not have a the micro SD card), drained it of the battery as well. As soon as I connected it to the power source the ‘recovery booting…’ phrase has been coming and going after long intervals on the top left side of the screen. I cannot turn the phone off, so cannot turn it on in the safe mode; nor can I proceed with the hard reset because it will not get out of the ‘recovery booting…’ mode. Any recommendations? Solution: Hi Gurtej_cheema. Try to wait for the battery to drain again, then try to see if you can do a master reset. In most boot loop cases, a factory or master reset fix problems so we hope the same will happen here.

You can also try to flash the bootloader and/or the firmware if the phone becomes stable enough. Below are the general steps on how to flash a bootloader. Exact steps for your phone model may be slightly different so make sure to find a good guide online on how to perform flashing on your phone.

  1. Look for the correct firmware for your phone model and download it. Make sure that you select the right one. It should be the same exact firmware that ran previously on your device. We assume that you list down the firmware version somewhere. If you did not take note of it before, there’s a chance that you may pick the wrong one. As you may know now, using an incorrect firmware can cause complications so good luck with that.
  2. Let’s now say that you have identified the correct firmware. You then want to download it to your computer. The firmware file should have a bunch of files in it like AP_, BL_, CSC_, etc.
  3. Look for the file that starts with a label BL; this should be the corresponding bootloader file for this firmware. Once you’ve identified the bootloader file, copy it to your computer’s desktop or to any other folder that you can easily access.
  4. Proceed with the rest of the flashing procedure using the Odin program.
  5. In Odin, click on the BL tab and make sure to use the bootloader file you’ve identified earlier.
  6. Now, make sure that the “Device Added” status and its “ID:COM box” has turned blue before hitting the START button. This will initiate the flashing of your phone’s bootloader.
  7. Restart the phone once the procedure is finished.

If the phone won’t become stable, or if you won’t be able to perform flashing at all, send the phone in for repair or replacement.

Problem 2: Galaxy S7 overheating and keeps rebooting on its own

I bought an S7 edge in Vietnam just over a month ago. It’s been working fine until last week when my phone has overheated and restarted itself. It then tells me I have to type in my password to access my phone. however it won’t show the keyboard app for me to type in my password and so I can’t access the phone. And it gets overheated and then restarts itself and this just keeps happening until the battery dies. All the other functions whilst the phone is locked works like emergency calls and the camera etc. However, it just won’t let me type in my password. It also gets really hot in this process too which is why I’m assuming it keeps restarting itself every minute. It also won’t let me reboot the phone only only restart it. — Hmh

Solution: Hi Hmh. Overheating and untimely restart usually go hand-in-hand because that’s a built-in mechanism of your phone to prevent hardware damage. An overheating phone is designed to shut down on its own if the internal temperature reaches a certain point to avoid damage to components. Overheating, in turn, may only be a symptom of something serious, though knowing it is beyond our ability to know right now. If this phone was dropped or got wet before, stop looking for ways to fix it yourself and simply send it in.

If you never dropped the phone or exposed it water or elements (too much heat or cold), try to wait until the battery runs out. Once that happens, let the phone cool off for at least 2 hours before charging it again. Once it’s fully charged, try to use it normally and see what happens. If possible, do a factory reset to eliminate the possibility of a software glitch. If your phone remains unstable after charging and the issue returns, there’s nothing much that you can do about it. Contact Samsung or your carrier so it can be repaired or replaced.

Problem 3: Galaxy S7 My Files app won’t open after an update

Hi there. I have a Samsung Galaxy S7. It recently asked me to install the software updates which i did. And a few things like font and icons changed. But since then i can’t open the “My Files” app. I tried putting it in Safe mode and it still wouldn’t open. I also deleted the cache and data. Something has happened since the software update. I can’t uninstall the app because it’s one of the set ones. Hope you can help! — Monica

Solution: Hi Monica. If you haven’t tried it yet, make sure that you also wipe the phone’s system cache. This procedure is a must-do if you encounter a problem after installing an update. Installation of updates and apps can sometimes mess up the system cache, which, in turn, can lead to all sorts of problems. To fix problems, you need to delete the existing system cache so the system will be forced to build a new one. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S7.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  4. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  6. Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
  7. Now highlight the option ‘Yes’ using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
  8. Wait until your phone is finished doing the Master Reset. Once completed, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and press the Power key.
  9. The phone will now reboot longer than usual.

If the problem continues after wiping the cache partition, make sure to wipe the phone via factory reset.

Create a backup of your important files such as photos, videos, contacts etc. You can use Smart Switch for this task.

  1. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S7.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  4. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  6. Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
  7. Now highlight the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
  8. Wait until your phone is finished doing the Master Reset. Once completed, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and press the Power key.
  9. The phone will now reboot longer than usual.

Problem 4: How to get out from Galaxy S7 Odin mode

Hi. My name is Maryann and I’m having trouble with my phone right now. First it got stuck on the Samsung logo for more than 10mins. Then i tried searching a way to fix it. i ended up following on Youtube by pressing Power, Home button and down volume. Then a message appear and pushed the up volume. now its downloading something which don’t allow me to turn it off. until now it’s still downloading. Please help because its scaring me that it might end up broken. I think it’s something about the software. Thanks. — Maryannmdaliva

Solution: Hi Maryannmdaliva. We don’t think the phone is actually downloading something. If you simply pressed Volume Up after booting to Odin mode, the device will be put in standby in preparation for a subsequent download. It doesn’t mean that it is trying to get some files from somewhere else though. You can reboot the phone back to normal mode by simply doing a soft reset. Here’s how to do that:

  1. Press and hold the Power and Volume Down buttons until the Maintenance Boot Mode screen appears (approx. 10 seconds).
  2. From the Maintenance Boot Mode screen, select Power down.
  3. Note Utilize the volume buttons to cycle through the available options and the Home button (located below the display) to select.

In some phones, pressing and holding both Power and Volume Down buttons won’t open Maintenance mode, but instead simply restarts it. The result should still be same though.

Problem 5: Galaxy S7 keyboard app keep crashing

When texting, my S7 freezes. The keyboard “dies” and does nothing. It’s “greyed” out so you can’t press the buttons, in the middle of typing a text. When it comes unfreezes, the letters, that I typed before it froze, physically come up and then eventually will start appearing as text. When this happens, all aspects of texting freeze or slow to turtle pace. I can’t find solutions for this issue anywhere on line. — Michelle

Solution: Hi Michelle. This type of issue can usually be fixed by deleting the keyboard app’s cache and data. If you haven’t tried that yet, here’s how:

  1. Open the Settings menu either through your notification shade (drop-down) or through the Settings app in your app drawer.
  2. Navigate down to “Apps”. This may be renamed to something like Applications or Application Manager in OEM skinned versions of Android 6 or 7.
  3. Once in there, look for the keyboard app you’re using and tap it. Samsung keyboard is usually the default one but if you’re using a different app, be sure to tap the right one.
  4. You’ll now see a list of stuff that gives you information about the app, including Storage, Permissions, Memory Use, and more. These are all clickable items. You’ll want to click on Storage.
  5. You should now clearly see the Clear Data and Clear Cache buttons for the application.

You can do the same procedure on the messaging app you’re using, in case it’s also buggy.

Problem 6: Galaxy S7 edge screen is damaged and keeps flickering

I have a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. Recently did a software update, and quite soon after noticed that there was a line on the screen and a flickering. The flickering has got worse to the point that the led blinks green, and the back key lights up, but no image appears on the screen at anytime. Turning on or off doesn’t show up anything so can’t do a reboot. Please help my partner is due any day, and i can’t receive calls. — Afox

Solution: Hi Afox. Try to boot the phone to Recovery mode and see if the problem remains. Recovery mode does not need Android operating system in order to work so if an update caused a glitch, the screen should work fine and not flicker or show a line. In this case, you want to do a factory reset to fix the issue.

On the other hand, if the problem continues even when you’re in Recovery mode, that’s a sign that the issue is hardware-related. You must have the phone repaired or replaced.

Below are the steps on how to start the phone to Recovery mode:

  1. Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  4. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  6. You can either wipe the cache partition or do a factory reset when in this mode.

Problem 7: Galaxy S7 screen damaged after phone was accidentally dropped

I’m sorry if I’m missing any details, however, I am scared out of my mind. My phone fell on to my rug last time and it would stay on. I then had to pay $200 to replace it. It is a Samsung Galaxy S7 regular not edge and I don’t have money to buy a new one. I really need it because I applied to a bunch of jobs and i use it on my everyday life and my mother won’t give $200 more to spend on a new phone since she still has to pay her hospital bills. I’m truly in a big mess.

So now for the details. i placed my phone without a case on my bed that is about 2 and a half feet above my bed. As i tried to stand up, it fell on my rug again. the screen then flashed white and it wouldn’t turn on for at least 3 min. I feared the worse then it did turn on and the bottom half of the screen kept sort of moving because it was glitching. I don’t know what to do. Can you tell me some things that might be wrong? without and a place that would replace it for free? i have Sprint and they charge $200 for a replacement. I truly need help. I don’t know what to do. — Fernan02

Solution: Hi Fernan02. As much as we would like to help, your issue is hardware-related and needs a hands-on repair from a professional. We understand it may be difficult for you to spend for repair but it’s the only way to fix the problem. The screen is clearly impacted and most probably permanently damaged so there’s no amount of software troubleshooting that you can do on your end to fix it.

We don’t provide hardware troubleshooting and diagnostics in our blog so if you want to do the repair yourself (which we strongly discourage), use Google to search for good guide. If you’re lucky and the damage is isolated to the screen assembly only, replacing it may work. Keep in mind though that you’ll still spend for the replacement component and tools to do the job. And that won’t even guarantee that your phone will work normally afterwards. If you want to take risks though, go ahead. iFixit website is a good place to start looking for a guide on how to replace the screen.

Problem 8: Galaxy S7 black screen with white “x”

So my S7 was completely fine then all of a sudden about a week ago I plugged it in to charge. The screen went black, a “x” popped up in the top right of the screen, the screen then acted like it rotated (the “x” moved to the bottom right), then an error somewhere along the lines of “cannot connect to gear VR. Please insure the device is properly inserted and try again” and then it won’t charge. I’ve tried 4 different chargers/cords (yes rapid charge as well) and it does the same thing. When it does this I need to restart my phone, plug it back in, and hope it charges or repeat. I’ve done a simulated soft reset and even that did nothing. — Suzie

Solution: Hi Suzie. This is an issue that usually results from a bad charging port. If you haven’t tried a factory reset yet, make sure that you do that first. We haven’t heard of an issue like this that was fixed by a factory reset but we still recommend that you perform it anyway so you can compare how the phone works after a reset and before a reset.

If a factory reset won’t change anything, hardware issue must be causing it. The black screen with a white “x” at the edge is usually an indication that the system “detects” that a VR (virtual reality) device is connected. We know you’re only connecting a regular charger so there clearly is a malfunction there. To fix the issue, some users were successful in it after cleaning the microUSB port. That’s probably because dirt or corrosion may have set in and altered the contacts somehow. If cleaning won’t fix your issue though, we recommend that you have the device repaired or replaced.

Problem 9: Galaxy S7 losing battery power fast

Hello! I would like to ask for your expert advice. I had a problem with the battery of my Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. I had it replaced by the shop where I bought it. I just got it today. Now I noticed that the battery still gets low fast. We have few chargers of Samsung phones at home and I have no idea now which one is the right for my phone. Can you please give a tip on how to check the right cable for my phone? And if there is other way to make my new battery stay longer since it is new as I supposed. I have not charged it yet since the time I got it back. Looking forward for your kind reply. Thank you so much! — Kathleen

Solution: Hi Kathleen. We’re slightly confused. If you got your phone as brand new, it should come with an original Samsung charger that looks like this one. That makes us think that your phone may be not brand new, and hence did not come with a Samsung charger. If that’s the case, try to visit your local Samsung store and get an original charger from them. Or you can also visit their website and get one from them. An original Samsung charger should come with Samsung logo and should look exactly like the one in the link.

If you think your phone is draining battery faster than normal, it’s your job to identify what is the primary reason for it. Because you have a non-brand new phone, there’s a chance that the phone or the battery may be problematic for some reason. It may be the main reason why the previous owner sold it in the first place. To know if that’s the case is impossible though, unless a really good technician can run a thorough diagnostics.

Assuming however that the battery and phone in general are okay, the main reason for the fast battery drain problem may be your usage habits. Yes, how you use the device can impact battery performance. When it comes to this issue, smarts is necessary. How you use your phone can make or break the battery. For example, if you tend to maximize screen brightness all the time, you can’t really expect the battery to give you an entire day’s usage. The most is probably a few hours. A huge number of installed apps can also negatively impact the system and battery. If you have lots of apps running in the background, or if you tend to install apps with abandon, you may actually be installing something that helps drain the juice our of your battery faster. Remember, not all apps are created equal. Some may be optimized and regularly updated to help conserve battery power, while some may not. If you’re running Android Nougat, visit Settings>Device maintenance>Battery and check what app is eating up a huge chunk of battery power.

Discussing the entire possible causes for battery drain issue is beyond the scope of this article so we recommend that you do more research. There are other websites that can give you more tips and tricks on how to lessen battery drain in an electronic device.

Problem 10: Galaxy S7 edge sound notifications not working

So my Samsung Galaxy S7 edge phone’s notification sound isn’t working at all. I tried everything I could. I restarted it, changed notification sound and setting, the volume went into individual contacts to change each ones notification and i got no result. The Battery is not removable so I can’t do that. I want to know when I get a message this is very frustrating. Please help thanks so much. — Leslie

Solution: Hi Leslie. If you’re positive that you’ve already selected the right options under Settings>Nofitications, then the only remaining options for you are:

  1. cache partition wipe and
  2. factory reset.
