Problem #1: Galaxy S5 not receiving any new Android updates

Hi. I would really appreciate your help. My problem is regarding the software update. I’ve done everything. I’ve read all your posts regarding that issue, Googled, YouTube, everything.

My issue is I don’t get any software update notification. I check and I only get the message “You have the latest software installed”. I live in Honduras, my carrier is Claro. My phone is Claro (I get the Claro logo when I turn on my phone, although I didn’t buy my phone at one of their stores. A friend of mine who sells phones (new phones) sold it to me. I’ve done many factory resets, and nothing works. I have a Samsung Galaxy S5 SM-G900H. I also read on the internet regarding calling my carrier and telling them to force/send a software update. I did that, but the customer service agent said he couldn’t do that, to be honest he didn’t seem to know much.

I also tried Samsung Smart Switch. it doesn’t show any new updates when I connect my phone to my PC. Nothing works. Please help me. I’ve been trying to update my system software for so long. I would really appreciate your help.

Solution: Hi Ricardo. There’s nothing that we can do as far as OTA (over-the-air) update is concerned. The schedule for carrier-based update releases depends on your carrier itself. What a user can do is simply wait for them. Bear in mind that some carriers may disallow OTA updates if the original owner has terminated his/her account with them. If this phone was part of a post-paid plan of the original owner, there may be some account-related reasons why the carrier has stopped updating the device.

If you are amenable to manually updating the device yourself, there are plenty of online resources that you can use as a guide. The thing is, manually updating the firmware is risky if not done properly, especially if you pick the wrong firmware for your particular model. Try to look around for someone in your place that has already tried flashing a custom firmware on this same exact device to help you. Otherwise, you can choose to simply stick with the current operating system to be on the safe side.

Problem #2: Galaxy S5 overheating, freezing, crashing issues

I turn on my phone, the logo pops up and then it goes to the provider screen and freezes up and doesn’t continue. An article told me it was the Android AUI. I’ve taken great care of this phone. never had water damage or anything. behind the battery there is a white strip on the phone so it can tell whether or not i have water damage. it shows up reddish color but i never dropped it in water. The fingerprint scanner broke after 8 month of having this brand new phone. It over heats like crazy. freezes up and crashes multiple times daily. feels like it might catch fire sometimes, but now it doesn’t go to the Lock screen or actually boot up and get going like it should. it freezes at provider screen and begins over heating.

I went to this website and it told me to press home, power and volume up buttons. I did that reset some thing and tried powering it on from there. Didn’t work. I then try to download boot loader and it’s been downloading for about 14 hours now. i can’t tell if its frozen or anything. its slightly hot. it tells me to not turn off power. Haven’t yet and i also haven’t done the Master Reset. Should i master reset the phone and try to see if it works or not? what should i do at this point? — Dayne

Solution: Hi Dayne. As a general rule of thumb when trying to resolve issues on Android devices, it’s always best to try software troubleshooting first. If you haven’t tried Master Reset, now is the right time. Keep in mind that doing this procedure only works if the problem lies on the firmware or some pre-installed apps. Should the issues remain even after a complete factory reset, you can assume that there’s a hardware error somewhere. Please follow these steps on how to do a master reset on an S5:

  • Power down the Galaxy S5.
  • Press and hold the Volume up button, the Home button, and the Power button together until you see the Android on screen.
  • Use Volume down to highlight the wipe data/factory reset option and press the Power button to select it.
  • Use Volume down again to highlight Yes – delete all user data and press Power to select it.
  • Use the Power button to select Reboot system now.
  • When the S5 restarts it should be completely wiped and ready to set up again.

Overheating, freezing, and crashing issues can also be caused by some component malfunction so if the issues remain, be sure to have the phone checked by Samsung or your local repair shop.

Problem #3: Spotify, TuneIn, other apps crashes randomly on Galaxy S5

Music apps like Spotify and TuneIn close with no explanation or obvious reason. I do not get a crash report or anything. They merely shut down. And it happens regularly. Been having the problem for some months and don’t remember which new apps I have installed recently (I have around 300).

Besides that I have a problem with messages from Google messenger not coming in and not getting notifications when receiving new messages from Facebook messenger. Obviously, I think everything is correlated.

I have even tried going to factory reset and the battery trick but it didn’t help.

Funny enough I experience the same problem with music apps shutting down in my Tab S (also with newest updates).

Hope you guys have an idea what’s causing this.

Solution: Hi Amor. There must be some conflict going on with some of your apps. Try to do another round of factory reset and install only the problematic apps individually. Make sure that you don’t enable “Automatic restore” under Settings>Backup and Reset before doing the actual factory reset to prevent the phone from re-installing the same set of apps and possible corrupt data. If the involved apps work after the reset but without you re-installing the rest of the apps, then you must invest some time to isolate which of your 300 apps is causing the conflict by installing them one by one. Doing so will help you determine exactly what app is to blame. This will take some time but it’s the only way to identify the culprit.

Problem #4: Galaxy S5 loses Wi-Fi connection when it’s a few feet away from router

Dear Sir. I have gone through the posts in your forum but the solutions do not resolve the Wi-Fi issue faced by me. I purchased this Samsung Galaxy S5 in 2013 from Indonesia. I returned to India after a few months and I still had no issues.

However, since last few months I face a problem that this device is not getting connected to my Home network from a distance. If I take the device close to the network router, then after “forget” and reconnecting by entering the password, it shows the Wi-Fi signal and gets connected, whereas from a distance it does not.

Moreover, after wi-fi connection, if you take the device a bit far even 5 feet away…the wi-fi signal goes away and/or data transfer is very poor. This happens with other friend’s home network too, whereas all my other mobile / Tabs are working fine even at a distance of 25  feet or more. However, there is no issue if I work on data pack instead of wi-fi. I would be glad to hear from you on possible solutions. Regards. — P.K.Das

Solution: Hi P.K.Das. Do you have any app installed that uses Wi-Fi radio in order to work? If you do, we suggest that you boot your phone in safe mode to see the difference. While in safe mode, all third party apps and services will be prevented from running. If the issue fails to occur in this mode, make sure that you uninstall apps until the is fixed. To boot your phone in safe mode, please follow these steps:

  • Turn the device off.
  • Press and hold the Power key.
  • When ‘Samsung Galaxy S5′ appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  • Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  • Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  • Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  • Release the Volume down key when you see Safe Mode.

Wiping the cache partition may also help in this case so don’t hesitate to do it. This troubleshooting step is usually recommended if you have updated a device to another operating system version or if the phone is having some weird glitches. Despite not having installed the full set of new operating system files, we suggest the you do the following steps to erase possibly corrupted cache on your device:

  • Turn the phone off.
  • Press and hold the following buttons together: Power, Volume Up and Home.
  • Release the buttons once the Android system recovery menu appears.
  • Use the Volume buttons to navigate to Wipe Cache Partition option.
  • Press the Power button to confirm selection.
  • Select Reboot System Now option after deleting the cache. Wait for the phone to reboot.

If these two solutions won’t work, make sure that you don’t skip factory reset. This is very useful for software-related problems.

Should the problem persists though, you can assume that the Wi-Fi radio maybe faulty so call Samsung for replacement.

Problem #5: Galaxy S5 lock screen won’t show up

My phone was shutting off at random times and rebooting all on its own.  Also, I kept getting notifications to update my software but I would download and it would fail every time.  I looked up both of these problems on your website, tried everything except a factory reset, and nothing worked. Factory reset was an option that would potentially fix both issues, so I performed one today. Update worked just fine.  Although I backed up my phone, the restore didn’t restore every single thing…I use the pattern security on the lock screen and I set that up as I did before. Lock screen does NOT provide the pattern. Same thing for the numeric passcode. The only way I am prompted to enter a code or pattern is when the phone has been reset. Then, after I enter the code/pattern and lock the screen again, code/pattern is gone again. — Andy

Solution: Hi Andy. The first thing that you can try is to observe the phone while safe mode is on (refer to steps above). Since no third party apps and services will run as long as you have it enabled, this will create a break in the way the system usually operates. As mentioned above, doing so will help you determine if an app is to blame.

Also, make sure that you set the lock screen type to either “Pattern” or “PIN” under Screen lock type. This may be basic but some users often forget it.

If nothing works, consider doing another round of factory reset but make sure not to enable the Automatic restore feature (as mentioned above). This will prevent your phone from re-installing the same set of possible corrupted app or cache.

Problem #6: Galaxy S5 won’t connect to Wi-Fi

I´m having issues with Wi-Fi connection. I am not able to connect to my home Wi-Fi network. I have tried to factory reset my router and modem and do the setup again, but it didn´t help. My other devices such as Sony Xperia Z1 compact or Lenovo Idea tab are totally OK with the Wi-Fi, so I´m 100% sure that the modem and router are alright. Just my Samsung Galaxy S5 refuses to do any action when i try to connect to the network. It doesn´t even show the state of connection (something like obtaining IP address, authenticating, connecting) — JUST nothing.

I have already done password checks, factory resets, cache wipes but neither of it helped. I have also tried the internet guides starting with changing the IP settings to static ending with proxys. If requested, i can provide the recording of my screen during the connecting process.

Solution: Hi Fero. If the basic software troubleshooting did not’ change anything at all, that might suggest that your phone’s Wi-Fi radio is broken. A Factory reset restores all settings, including Wi-Fi and mobile data, to default. If a third party app modified some of your phone’s Wi-Fi settings, or if you’ve changed some accidentally before, a factory reset should easily fix everything. Unless you rooted your device and tampered  with the EFS folder (which contains critical phone-specific data), or if the EFS folder has been changed after a software customization, then you should be okay.

Of course, it’s also possible that a hardware error is to blame. Although rare, Wi-Fi radios can get broken. Have you considered this fact? To test, try to connect your device to another known, working Wi-Fi network. If your phone continues to fail to connect to any Wi-Fi, consider having it replaced.
