Problem #1:  #Samsung Galaxy S5 with T-Mobile SIM won’t register to network

I got my phone from a friend who got a new phone. it was still working when I got it. I put a new T-Mobile SIM card for it, paid for the $50 a month prepaid service  and put all the correct numbers in to get it working but when I try to make a call it tells me not registered on the network when I go into settings and try to register it, it will locate Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile when I select any one of them  ( tried them all ) it says it can’t register device manually to select automatically. Then it tries to register automatically  and is unable to do so. The guy at the t-mobile store looked at it, but did not seem to be a tech guru at all. He just said “yeah, I don’t know. that’s weird”

Solution: Hi Stephanie. The best thing that you can do first is to call T-Mobile for first hand support. This is to ensure that you are doing the right steps to register your device to their network. This is due to the fact that most smartphones are coded to prevent them from being used with another wireless carrier (locked). To unlock your phone (previously known as SIM unlock), a user usually need to call their carriers to obtain an unlock code.

If you want to do something before calling them though, you must ensure that these four things are verified.

Check device compatibility

To provide their services carriers use their assigned set of frequencies and technology. This means that not all Samsung Galaxy S5s work the same way across networks. There may be functionalities being offered by Verizon that may not be present if you unlock their phone and use a T-Mobile SIM.

We know though that the core functions of the S5 will still be available if you switch to a different network so there’s really nothing much that you can do for this point. If you want to get an unlock code from the original carrier of this phone, make sure to call them about it. Otherwise, simply use Google to look for other websites offering services to do the job.

Select the right SIM card

The next thing to do is to use a compatible SIM card. You can visit T-Mobile’s site for more instructions on what to do.

Line must be activated

This is a no-brainer. After getting the SIM card, make sure that it is properly provisioned so you can start using T-Mobile’s network. If you bought a new SIM card, try inserting it to another phone and see if it’s working.

Internet & MMS settings

In order to use T-Mobile’s data and MMS services, you must set the correct APN on your S5. Below are the standard APN settings for an Android phone provided by T-Mobile.

  • Tap Settings.
  • Go to Network Connections.
  • Tap More networks.
  • Tap Mobile networks.
  • Tap Access Point Names.
  • To reset the APN, just  tap the Menu icon, then tap Reset to default.
  • If available, tap the T-Mobile US LTE APN (the bullet point fills with green).
  • Name: T-Mobile US LTE
  • APN:
  • Proxy: <Not set>
  • Port: <Not set>
  • Username: <Not set>
  • Password: <Not set>
  • Server: <Not set>
  • MMSC:
  • Multimedia message proxy: <Not set>

  • APN type: default, mms, supl
  • APN protocol: IPv4/IPv6

  • Turn APN on/off: APN turned on
  • Bearer: Unspecified
  • Mobile virtual network operator type: None
  • Mobile virtual network operator value: <Not set>
  • Tap the Menu key in the top right.
  • Tap Save.
  • Tap your desired APN profile. The bullet point fills with green next to the APN profile.

Problem #2: AT&T Galaxy S5 does not allow tethering

I purchased AT&T unlocked phone from an eBay seller. I’m on StraightTalk. My voice and internet works fine in new phone. With the same SIM from ST, i used to do tethering (Wi-Fi hotspot) with my Nexus 4. But when I try that in the G5, it asks to contact AT&T. How to resolve this? I’m not a AT&T customer, and ST officially don’t allow tethering; so they don’t support either. 

  1. ST says we are entitled to 5 GB of $G data, so whether I use from phone or tither and use from laptop when in commute, I’m only using my allowance. Hard to understand these policies. — Kay

Solution: Hi Kay. The reason for your problem right is that the firmware running on the device is still from AT&T, which may be programmed to restrict tethering. A workaround for this restriction is to root your first so you can install third party apps that would allow you to share your internet connection to other devices. Rooting your S5 gives you more access to do things that are usually not made available by carriers including, of course, tethering. The procedure though voids the manufacturer warranty so make sure that you consider this fact before you proceed.

There are many online resources that offers specific instructions on how to root your Galaxy S5.

After rooting your S5, you can head to the Play Store and look for third party apps that you want.

Problem #3: Galaxy S5 can download but cannot browse websites

Sir. My issue is that I could not access internet in my Samsung S5 after I upgraded it to Lollipop. I cannot access Google Chrome, UC browser, system update, Google Play and many more but I can access only  opera mini. but in Opera mini I can only download up to a limit (say up to 20 MB only, if it exceeds it failed to download) and uTorrent (here I can download large files like 1 GB or 2 GB).

I am using Internet in my laptop using USB cable and I am shocked that it goes generally 2 to 3 MB per second.

Solution: Hi Robin. If the only change made on the phone prior to experiencing the problem was to update to Lollipop, consider doing a factory reset to ensure that the phone runs a clean firmware. After the reset, try to install Chrome browser and see if it works. Do not install any third party apps before installing Chrome to help you identify if any of them is the culprit.

Problem #4: Galaxy S5 unable to use StraightTalk mobile data

I am using Straight Talk and their IT people are useless!!  I can only get internet through Wi-Fi… I have tried rebooting and factory reset.  I have looked online and tried several different APN settings, but none seem to help, or I may be way over my head and APN settings may have nothing to do with it, but I have tried to turn the Wi-Fi off and I have nothing…Any suggestions. I am so frustrated at this point I’m thinking of getting another phone and going with Verizon so there is an actual place I can go and hand someone the phone and let them fix it.  HELP! — Anne

Solution: Hi Anne. If your main concern here is the inability of your S5 to use mobile data via StraightTalk network, only their technical support can really assist you in fixing it. Mobile data connectivity problems can be caused by factors that may be out of our control. Make sure that there are no billing- or account-related issues that’s preventing the phone from using mobile data. If this phone is not originally from StraightTalk, the existing firmware or operating system may be to blame. Performing a factory reset and doing other standard software troubleshooting procedures may not work simply because the issue may be network- or account-related.

As much as we would like to help, an issue like this is best resolved by your carrier.

Problem #5: Galaxy S5 not detecting the SIM card

Hello my S5 was working fine up in till 2 weeks ago it just started saying no SIM card. I went changed the sim card still not working. I rebooted it factory reset. But just today it started reading it but the 3g symbol  is transparent. I can’t use my data try to update but phone says all updates are done if I turn off my phone it will go back to saying it can’t read the sim card. — Ricardo

Solution: Hi Ricardo. Make sure that the SIM card is still working properly first. If you have another phone, try inserting the SIM to it to see if it’s operational. If it works, the phone’s SIM card slot may not be reading it properly. Try cleaning the metal connectors in the slot before inserting the SIM card again. If it still doesn’t work, consider getting a new SIM card.

Problem #6: Galaxy S5 won’t load sites like MLB, ESPN, Fidelity

My version just said 5.0. I am experiencing sites espn,, and now FIDELITY ( Who just changed their format) where I am getting tab crash and reload  and with Fidelity it just says “loading” like it is loading the site but it just sits there. I do my investment work with my phone so the fidelity issue is critical. Happens regardless of if on Wi-Fi, regular dedicated internet access point, etc. The sites come up fine on my laptop. I dont have a bunch of garbage on my phone and have plenty of memory. I’ve tried it with the site being the only page open, different times of day, locations. Does not matter. Issue to me seems to be amount of info being pulled up as Fidelity worked fine until they changed their format. — Rick

Solution: Hi Rick. If only these apps you mentioned are not working properly, try to  re-install them and see how it goes. If the problem remains after the re-install, delete the cache partition. Here’s how:

  • Turn the phone off.
  • Press and hold the following buttons together: Power, Volume Up and Home.
  • Release the buttons once the Android system recovery menu appears.
  • Use the Volume buttons to navigate to Wipe Cache Partition option.
  • Press the Power button to confirm selection.
  • Select Reboot System Now option after deleting the cache. Wait for the phone to reboot.

If you are trying to access these sites using a browser like Google Chrome, make sure that you delete its cache and data prior to re-installing it.
