Problem 1: Galaxy Note 8 keeps showing ad popups
Google Play Store ads that keep popping up full screen randomly on my Note 8. It is not only annoying, distracting and may startle one at times when suddenly the audio sound of the flash ad just comes on when you are in the middle of something or when the phone is on standby mode. Appreciate it you could advise on how to stop these ads . Was advised by my friends to disable the peel remote on the phone, but I can’t seem to locate that on my phone. — Cheryl
Solution: Hi Cheryl. Unwanted ads that popup randomly is one of the signs that your phone is infected with a virus, more specifically an adware. Viruses in Android devices are usually spread by apps so you have most likely installed an app from a bad developer. To fix the problem, you must uninstall the source of these ads from the system. Below are the steps that you try:
Uninstall newly installed app/s
If these ads have only appeared recently and you happened to install a new app, be sure to start your troubleshooting by removing the recently installed app first. To uninstall an app, follow the steps:
- Open Settings app.
- Tap Apps.
- Tap Uninstall button.
Restart the phone to safe mode
If you can’t remember what app you’ve recently added, we suggest that you check what happens when all third party apps and services will be blocked. If there are no random ad popups when the phone runs in safe mode, that’s another confirmation that these ads are being driven by something you’ve added.
To restart your Note 8 to safe mode, follow these steps:
- Turn the device off.
- Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen.
- When “SAMSUNG” appears on the screen, release the Power key.
- Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
- Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
- Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
- Release the Volume down key when you see Safe Mode.
- Observe the phone while it’s on safe mode for at least 24 hours.
Remember, it’s important that you allow the phone to run in safe mode for at least 1 full day. This will give you enough time to notice any difference.
If the ads won’t show, you must uninstall third party apps until their source is removed from the system. Safe mode won’t help you pinpoint the exact app so you’ll need to spend time and effort in eliminating possible apps. You can do that by uninstalling apps individually, and making sure to see if ads continue to pop up. If you have lots of apps, this process may take you days to do but it’s the only effective way to identify the cause of the problem.
Wipe the phone clean with factory
Alternatively, instead of identifying the cause of the problem by uninstalling apps one by one, you can reverse the process by wiping the phone first, then installing apps individually and observing the phone.
To wipe the phone clean, here are the steps:
- From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
- Tap Settings > Cloud and accounts.
- Tap Backup and restore.
- If desired, tap Back up my data to move the slider to ON or OFF.
- If desired, tap Restore to move the slider to ON or OFF.
- Tap the back button to the Settings menu and tap General Management > Reset > Factory data reset.
- Tap Reset.
- If you have screen lock turned on, enter your credentials.
- Tap Continue.
- Tap Delete all.
Be wary when installing apps
Our takeaway for you in this case is be suspicious when it comes to apps. While there are many good ones out there, a lot of shady developers are also offering their legit-looking apps for grabs in the Play Store. Remember, no app is truly free. Building an app is a time-consuming and resource-hungry undertaking and not every developer are keen on making their products available without asking for something in return. Some may mine your personal information, browsing habits, or even steal bank and credit card details. Still, others try to be subtle by letting their apps earn money for them by forcing ads so they can charge advertisers a fee. If you are not careful with what apps you add, it’s only a matter of time before you’ll find yourself hacked or your confidential information stolen. For that, you only have yourself to blame.
The key here is to ensure that you only install apps that are necessary to you. The less apps you have, the less likely you’ll encounter problems. You also lessen the chance of you encountering problems like what you’re having right now.
Problem 2: Sprint Galaxy Note 8 mobile data turns off when making or receiving calls
I just upgraded from Note 2 to Note 8. I use Sprint and nothing else has changed. When I make a phone call my data connection immediately cuts off. Samsung had no idea, Sprint phone customer service had no idea. Actually Sprint had me update my profile, but when that didn’t work they just told me to go to a corporate store. Solution: Hi Robert. Some CDMA phones, including the ones from Sprint, may not be equipped to handle the traffic of both voice calls and mobile data. This may be the reason why mobile data connection shuts off when you make or receive a call. It’s not a problem at all but rather a technical limitation that can sometimes be changed, depending or not your carrier can find a way to allow both services to work at the same time. For example, Sprint has recently introduced their Calling PLUS feature which now allows select phones to handle both voice calls and mobile data. We don’t work for Sprint so we don’t know much about the specifics of this new feature but you can visit this link for details.
Remember, Calling Plus is only available for a few handsets at this time. Even if your phone is updated, it’s possible that the latest update may not include Calling Plus upgrade. Be sure to talk to Sprint about this feature so you’ll get first hand information.
Problem 3: Galaxy Note 8 can’t detect other Bluetooth devices.
I have an issue with my Bluetooth on my phone, a Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Android version 7.0.0. It is not connecting at all to a Bluetooth device albeit phone or vehicle.
Also when I go to scan for nearby Bluetooth devices on my phone it does not show any Bluetooth devices near even if I’m sitting in the driver’s seat of my vehicle. I’ve checked my phone and I made it visible to others and there’s no updates to be had. Is there a solution for this? Thank you. — Chris Smits670
Solution: Hi Chris. Bluetooth either works or not. If nothing happens when you tap the Bluetooth icon to turn it on, or if no phone can detect your Note 8 when it’s Bluetooth is on, then you definitely have a problem. You should try two things in this case:
- restart the phone to safe mode (to see if a third party app is involved)
- factory reset (in order to return all software settings to their defaults)
If Bluetooth remains problematic after you’ve factory reset the device, you should send it in. Its Bluetooth chip may have stopped working for some reason. Unfortunately, you can’t just tweak some software settings to fix it. The phone may need to be replaced.
